This morning I was reading Críticas and found a fascinating article by Loida García-Fedo about Wilton Hurtado Cuero, a man truly dedicated to making this world a better place. Hurtado Cuero is a librarian in Chocó, a department (state) on Colombia’s Pacific coast where poverty is prevalent, there is little infrastructure, and citizens have seen a lot of violence in recent years.
This dedicated man saw a need for services and did something about it. When a flood destroyed the public library where he worked, he asked the government for help in order to continue offering the community library services. Hurtado Cuero took up a bag full of books and started walking up and down the Santiago River bringing books to a number of schools and households in the area. This project became known as La Maleta Viejara (Traveling Suitcase). His visits later revealed that many of the children he was seeing where suffering from poor nutrition, which in part was attributed to the fumigations which are supposed to be killing coca plantations, but are instead destroying local crops. Hurtado Cuero worked to provide food security to this community.
Over the years I’ve discovered a number of similar projects. People truly dedicated to providing library services and promoting education. I’ve read about a Colombian who provides library services with a donkey, and a project where camels are used to provide library services to nomadic tribes in Kenya. These stories made me want to leave the comfort of the academic library I work at, and join these people who are truly improving the world we live in. On the other hand, I’m reminded that even in Colombia such noble actions get little attention. I asked my father, who lives in Colombia, about Hurtado Cuero and he said there was no mention anywhere. I also tried searching for more information about on him and came up empty handed. Still, if I can bring some attention to these brave souls, I want to do so, and I hope this drop in the bucket encourages others to take their careers to the full extent of the possibilities!

Esta mañana estaba leyendo Críticas y encontré un artículo fascinante por Loida García-Fedo, sobre Wilton Hurtado Cuero, un hombre realmente dedicado a mejorar el mundo. Hurtado Cuero es bibliotecario en el departamento colombiano del Chocó, la región pacifica colombiana, donde la pobreza ve se en todas partes, hay poca infraestructura, y donde los habitantes han visto gran cantidad de violencia en los últimos años.
Este bibliotecario, dedicado a su comunidad, vio ciertas necesidades en su comunidad y tomo acción hacia ellas. Cuando una inundación destruyo la biblioteca pública donde trabajaba, pidió ayuda al gobierno nacional para seguir ofreciendo los servicios de la biblioteca. Hurtado Cuero se hecho al hombre un talego de libros y emprendió marcha sobre el costado del río Santiago, ofreciendo libros a escuelas y casas del área. Esta iniciativa se llego a conocer como La Maleta Viajera. Mientras repartía libros se dio cuenta que nos niños que visitaba sufrían de malnutrición, lo cual en parte esta causa de las fumigaciones en el área contra los cultivos de coda, pero que a su vez están destruyendo cultivos legales. Así como tomo iniciativa para repartir libros, Hurtado Cuero hecho manos a la obra para proveer seguridad alimenticia a la comunidad.
Através de los años he descubierto varios proyecto similares, gente realmente dedicada a proveer servicios bibliotecarios y a promover la educación. Le leído sobre otro colombiano que ofrece servicios de biblioteca con la ayuda de un par de burros, y un proyecto de la biblioteca nacional de Kenya que ofrece los mismos servicios a tribus nómadas con la ayuda de camellos. Estas historias me dieron ganas de dejar el confort de la biblioteca académica donde trabajo y mas bien unirme a estos proyectos que realmente ayudan a mejorar el mundo en el que vivimos. Claro que al mismo tiempo me acorde que el Colombia, tan nobles acciones usualmente pasan desapercibidas. Hable con mi papa, quien todavía vive en Colombia, y me dijo que por ningún lado escucho sobre Hurtado Cuero y su trabajo en el Chocó. También trate de buscar mas información sobre el y no logre encontrar nada. De cualquier manera, si logro atraer un poco de atención a estas causas quiero hacerlo, y espero que este pequeño acto ayude a inspirar a otros a buscar el limite de las posibilidades en sus carreras.
