As the name implies, Latinas in History is about Latinas around the world, and throughout the ages (although with heavy emphasis on the USA); both the stories of individual women, as well as the groups they form. The site offers a few essays with a general overview of Latinas in the USA, which helps contextualize the large collection of biographies to follow. They include world reknown Latinas, including the likes of Gloria Anzaldua, Vicky Carr, “Lolita” Lebron, Dolores Huerta, Carolina Herrera, and many, many others. Each entry contains a small summary of the woman’s life, or main acomplishment, as well as links to outside sources. These are also organized by topics, such as Labor activism, law, journalism, music and dance, etc.

The site also contains resources to teach about Latina Women in the USA, including lesson plans, mostly geared towards highschool and undergraduate students.

All in all, a very interesting site. Just be warned that music will automatically stream when you load the site.

Como el nombre implica, Latinas in History es un sitio web sobre mujeres Latinas alrededor del mundo y a lo largo de los años (pero con énfasis en los EEUU). El sitio contiene historias de mujeres individuales, así mismo como mujeres y los diversos grupos que forman. También encontrara varios ensayos ofreciendo una visión general de las mujeres Latinas en EEUU que le ayudaran a contextualizar la gran colección de biografías a seguir. La sección de biografías incluye muchas mujeres renombradas, como lo son Gloria Anzaldua, Vicky Carr, “Lolita” Lebron, Dolores Huerta, Carolina Herrara, y muchas otras. Cada entrada contiene una breve explicación de su vida, y logras así como varios enlaces a otros recursos en la web. I just found out that the Spanish Ministry of Culture is offering scholarships for library and archive professionals from a number of Spanish speaking countries. To apply you must be a citizen of one of the following countries: Andorra, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Portugal, the Dominican Republic, Uruguay, or Venezuela. Application will also be considered from Equatorial Guinea, the Philippines, and Puerto Rico, as will application from Spanish citizens residing in any of these countries. Applications are due on May 4th, so good luck!

Today the World Digital Library goes live! The project has been in the works for about 4 years now, and was initially conceived by James Billington of the USA Library of Congress (LOC), and developed by UNESCO and LOC. The site will function in seven languages and will showcase digital treasures from around the globe and throughout the ages. It is hoped that the site will help promote international understanding and expand non-English, non-Western content online.

¡Hoy la Biblioteca Digital Mundial se lanza en vivo! El proyecto ha estado en las planeación cerca de 4 años y fue inicialmente concebido por James Billington de la Biblioteca del Congreso de EE.UU. (LOC), y desarrollado por la UNESCO y la LOC. El sitio funcionará en siete idiomas y mostrará tesoros digitales de todo el mundo y a lo largo de los siglos. Se espera que el sitio ayudará a promover el entendimiento internacional y expandir el contenido de la web en idiomas diferentes al inglés, y de regiones no occidentales.

This really is a fascinating collection. You can search it by geographic region, time period, topic, holding institution, and type of item. While looking  you’ll find old photographs, curated videos, detailed explanations of the items, and links to share these treasures through some of the most commons web 2.0 venues, such as Facebook and Twitter.

Esta realmente es una colección fascinante. Se puede buscar por región geográfica, período de tiempo, tema, institución, y el tipo de elemento. Here’s a very interesting photo essay from Wired magazine about the impact of new technologies on a small onion growing town in Colombia. The author and photographer capture a town that still tends the land with the same techniques used for hundreds of years, while simultaneously becoming connected to the outside world through the use of cellphones, computers, video games and movies.

Aquí les comparto un foto-ensayo súper interesante de la revista Wired, sobre como un pequeño pueblo Colombiano se está conectando al mundo por medio de nuevas tecnologías. El autor y fotógrafo captura un pueblo que todavía ara la tierra de la misma manera que se ha hecho por siglos, mientras simultáneamente empieza a usar teléfonos celulares, computadores, juegos de video y películas.

The Library of Congress (LOC) just set up a YouTube account where they will be sharing a number of the treasured they hold. They currently have over 70 videos uploaded, but they promise to regularly continue adding more material. Right now they have their videos organized in a number of playlists; author presentations, industrial films, and the earliest films made, among others. Some of the videos were initially created as motion films, while others are a collection of images on the specific topic. Every videos comes with a brief summary description, publisher’s information, performer, and LOC subject headings.

Many of the videos shared on YouTube can also be found on the LOC.gov website and at American Memory site.

La Biblioteca del Congreso (LOC) en USA acaba de crear una cuenta en YouTube donde estará compartiendo algunos de los tesoros que guardan. En este momento tiene poco más de 70 videos, pero prometen agregar más material. Ahora su colección esta organizada en varias categorías; presentaciones de autores, películas industriales, y las primeras películas, entre otros. Algunos de los videos fueron creados originalmente como películas, mientras otros son una colección de imágenes estáticas sobre determinado tema. Cada video trae una descripción breve, información sobre quien publico el material originalmente, los actores, y las categorías de clasificación que la biblioteca a agregado.

Ever wonder what the world looks like in raw numbers? Well Worldometers will provide you with a dizzing amount of numbers, all just whizzing by you. The site shows real, live, statistical information from around the globe. Statistics are divided into several categories; World Population, Government & Economics, Society & Media, Environment, Food, Water, Energy, and Health. Further breakdown will give you live updated on the number of births and deaths this year, world spending on illegal drugs, people who have no access to safe drinking water, obese people in the world, forest lost this year, blog posts today, and many many others. A few of the categories are hyperlinked and provide you additional information on the given subject.

The site is kept by a world wide group of developers, researchers and volunteers, and their data is taken from a number of reputable sources, all listed clearly here.

This same group has also joined forces with ItaliaOra (which provides live statics about Italy) to create a similar site called Stop the Hunger, dedicated to providing real statistics on world hunger.

I invite you to take a look and be amazed.

¿Alguna vez se ha preguntado como se ve el mundo en números? Pues Worldometers le mostrara suficiente número como para marearlo. El sitio ofrece información sobre el globo en número reales, y en vivo. Las estadísticas están organizadas en varías categorías; Población Mundial, Gobierno & Economía, Sociedad & Medios de Comunicación, Medio Ambiente, Alimento, Agua, Energía, y Salud. Estas categorías están subdividida mostrando información sobre temas específicos como el número de nacimiento y muertes este año, el gasto mundial en drogas ilegales, personas sin acceso a agua potable en el mundo, gente obesa en el mundo, bosques destruidos este año, artículos de blog hoy, y muchas, muchas mas. Algunas de las categorías están enlazadas y proveen información adicional sobre el tema.

El sitio es mantenido por un grupo de investigadores y voluntarios alrededor del mundo, y los datos vienen de un número de fuentes reconocidas, todas listadas claramente aquí.

Este mismo grupo también se unió al proyecto de ItaliaOra (que muestra cifras en vivo sobre Italia) para crear un proyecto similar llamado “Stop the Hunger” (Pare el Hambre) mostrando estadísticas reales sobre el hambre en el mundo.

Mexican Enough: My Life Between the Borderlines by Stephanie Elizondo Griest

My rating: 3 of 5 stars
This is an interesting book, although it really only scratched the surface of the many issues it tried to explore. The main thrust behind Griest’s time abroad was to discover her roots, and while it seems she got a better view of Mexico than she ever had before, what struck me was her own sense at the futility of the quest. Throughout the book she is constantly commenting how she just can’t seem to get the subtleties the culture has to offer.

“Mexican Enough” is exactly right, this is who she is, and that OK; although I think her conclusions could have been quite different had she explored other aspects of Mexico, not just the poor and oppressed. Had she hang out with the middle class, she might have found a Mexico very similar to her own upbringing in Texas, and maybe then she would have felt “more Mexican.”

Este es un libro interesante, aunque apenas arañar la superficie de las cuestiones que trata de explorar. El impulso principal detrás de la visita de Griest a México es su deseo de explorar sus raíces y, aunque parece que el viaje le permitió ver un “México” que nunca antes había visto, lo que más me quedo sonando fue su propio sentimiento de futilidad en este intento de autoanálisis cultural. Durante todo el viaje la autora repite una y otra vez que simplemente lo logra captar las sutilezas de la cultura.

“Mexican Enough” (suficientemente Mexicana) es exactamente lo que describe el titulo; Griest es quien es culturalmente y no hay necesidad de más explicaciones. Pero me parece que sus conclusiones podrían haber sido diferente si hubiera explorar otros aspectos de México, no sólo las comunidades más pobres y más oprimidas. De haber pasado más tiempo con la clase media, seguro habría encontrado un México muy similar a su nativo Texas, y quizás entonces se habría sentido “más mexicana”.

Today both the Guardian and the New York Times had articles about the hard times public libraries are facing because of the economic downturn. The article in the Guardian explained that public libraries in the UK are facing budget cuts, on top of years of inadequate funding, and less than steller attention from local politicians.

The article in the New York Times explained that while public libraries are seeing double digit increases in patron usage, this high demand is also creating new sources of stress. The article described librarians having to deal with higher numbers of homeless people sleeping at the library, reference librarians having to help people fill out job applications, and lots of people trying to use the web who don’t really know what they are doing.

I think it’s clear that when the economy goes sour more and more people need the free resources that the library provides. During these times the smart thing to do would be to protect library budgets as much as posible. If public libraries reduce their hours, and resources where will all these people needing help go? Besides, the longer people are unemployed, the longer it will take for the economy to start turning around.

YouTube has created a section of their site titled YouTube Edu where they will be gathering videos with educational content, organized by academic institution (and there are a lot of big names schools participating). There you can find complete lectures, information for prospective students, campus events, and guest lecturers.

Watching a few of these lectures, some of them are highly edited, and offer information on the institution that created them.

The video below is from the Culinary Institute of America and will teach you how to properly fill a pastry bag and decorate cupcakes! Yum!

I just love that these days all you need is access to the web to learn about pretty much anything and everything! This project reminds me of Academic Earth.

YouTube ha creado una sección en su sitio web dedicado a videos con contenido educacional, titulado YouTube Edu. Los videos están organizados por institución académica, entre las cuales encontrara muchas universidades prestigiosas en EEUU. Aquí podrá encontrar sesiones de clase completas, información para estudiantes que apenas ingresan a la universidad, eventos en el campus, y charlas con personajes invitados.

Mirando estos videos vero que algunos ha sido editado, y contienen información extra acerca de la institución que los creo.

El video arriba es de la Culinary Institute of America y le ensenara como correctamente llenar una bolsa pastelera y decorad cupcakes. ¡Qué rico!

Realmente me encanta que hoy si se tiene conexión de internet se puede aprender sobre casi cualquier cosa. Este proyecto se parece mucho a Academic Earth.
