SALALM is the Seminar on the Acquisition of Latin American Library Materials and dates back to 1956. Back then a group of librarians got together to try and figure out how to handle selection, acquisition, and processing of library material from Latin America. They soon saw a need to make this a permanent effort, and in 1968 they incorporated as a non-profit association.

“SALALM’s primary missions are the control and dissemination of bibliographic information about all types of Latin American publications and the development of library collections of Latin Americana in support of educational research. Promotion of cooperative efforts to achieve better library service is an equally important activity. SALALM is also concerned with the special problems of librarians of Latin America and the Caribbean and with library development in those areas. Providing library materials for the Spanish-and Portuguese-speaking populations in the United States is another field of interest. Through various committees the members of SALALM promote, conduct, and participate in research and studies of current and potential problems. The compilation of bibliographies is an especially important aspect of these studies.”

This year SALALM will be meeting for their 54th conference, to take place in Berlin, July 3 -8. The conference’s topic will be “Migrations and Connections: Latin America and Europe in the Modern World.”

SALALM es el Seminario sobre la Adquisición de Materiales de la Biblioteca de América Latina y se remonta a 1956. En aquel entonces un grupo de bibliotecarios se reunieron para tratar de averiguar cómo manejar la selección, adquisición y procesamiento de materiales bibliotecarios de América Latina. Pronto vieron la necesidad de que este fuera un esfuerzo permanente, y en 1968 se incorporó como una asociación sin ánimo de lucro.

La misión principal del SALALM es la de control y difusión de la información bibliográfica sobre todos los tipos de publicaciones de América Latina y el desarrollo de las colecciones sobre Latina Americana en apoyo de la investigación educativa. Así como la promoción de cooperativas para lograr un mejor servicio de biblioteca. SALALM también se ocupa de los problemas especiales de los bibliotecarios de América Latina y el Caribe y con el desarrollo de las en esas zonas. Proporciona materiales para la biblioteca en español y de habla portuguesa en los Estados Unidos. A través de diversos comités de los miembros de SALALM promueve, realiza y participa en la investigación y los estudios de los actuales y posibles problemas en el campo. La recopilación de la bibliografía es un aspecto especialmente importante de estos estudios

Google just released yet another cool tool, Google City Tours. This time they are going to help you travel, and make sure you see all the important sights at handful of cities.

Google acaba de producir otra excelente herramienta, Google City Tours. Esta vez le ayudaran a viajar, y asegúrese de que vea todos los lugares de interés turístico más importantes en un puñado de ciudades.

You’ll get a maps that charts your walking plan, and optional pop-up windows with the name of the sight, and how long they believe you’ll need to enjoy it; the’ll also give you the site’s hours of operation.

Obtendrá un mapas gráficos con un plan para caminar, y ventanas pop-up opcionales con el nombre del sitio, y cuánto tiempo creen que necesitará para disfrutar de él; también le darán las horas de funcionamiento del lugar.

I was just going over the San Francisco tour, since I know the city pretty well, and they certainly covered all the major touristy attractions.

Estuve mirando el recorrido para San Francisco, ya que conozco la ciudad bastante bien, y realmente cubren todos los principales lugares de interés.

The one thing they need to add is a link to the website of each location.

BabelWithMe.com is a new method to communicate with people who don’t speak (or write) our same language. It seems very easy to use; just visit the site, choose a login name, and then email your partner the permalink you are assigned, and voilà!

I was trying to find examples of how people are using this, and all I found was this conversation titled IranElection. It seems that the other people logged in are maybe trying to see how BabelWithMe works. I logged into this conversation first in English, then in Spanish, and both times it gave me adequate translations for the conversation.

Simultaneous translations are provided by Google, which recently improved all its translating tools.

This could be a great tool for virtual reference.

BabelWithMe.com es un nuevo método para comunicarse con personas que no hablan (o escriben), nuestra misma lengua. Parece muy fácil de usar, simplemente visite el sitio web, elija un nombre de usuario y luego envié el enlace permanente que le ha sido asignado a su pareja, y voilà!

Estaba tratando de encontrar ejemplos de cómo la gente utiliza esto, y todo lo que encontré fue esta conversación titulada IranElection. Parece que los que están usando esta conversación lo está haciendo más que nada para probar la herramienta y ver cómo funciona. Me registre en la conversación primero en Inglés, y luego en español, y las dos veces me dio la traducción adecuada de la conversación.

La traducción simultánea es producto de Google, que recientemente mejoró la traducción de todas sus herramientas.

Esta podría ser una gran herramienta para la referencia virtual.

UNESCO’s Open Training Platform gathers thousands of existing, free training courses on a wide range of subjects. Currently it offers 3,426 training resources, covering 293 categories (including agriculture, education, languages, and health and sanitation, among others). Content originates from a variety of partners, including several educational projects, and foundations.

Resources are organized by Categories, Communities, and Resource types. Each course will clearly show its format, language, producer, and a brief description. Some of the courses are audio files, other are in PDF form, all are accessible to everyone.

El Open Training Platform de la UNESCO es una plataforma que reúne miles de cursos de capacitación gratis, los cuales cubren una amplia gama de temas. Actualmente se ofrece 3.426 recursos de formación, que abarcan 293 categorías (incluyendo agricultura, educación, idiomas, salud e higiene, entre otros). El contenido proviene de una variedad de socios, entre ellos varios proyectos educativos, y fundaciones.

Los recursos están organizados por categorías, comunidades y tipos de recursos. Cada curso le mostrara claramente su formato, idioma, productor, y una breve descripción. Algunos de los cursos son archivos de audio, otros están en formato PDF, todos son accesibles a todos.

Wired has a good short article and video about UC Berkeley’s Museum of Vertebrates Zoology‘s Library. The library holds a large number of skeletons, furs, and fully taxidermy animals. Interestingly, today the collection is most often used to study environmental contaminants, comparing the traces found in the old carcasses, to those in animals being caught today. DNA can also be extracted for other type of comparisons.

The library is not open to the public, so this video ought to be the next best thing.

La revista Wired tiene un articulo y video sobre la Biblioteca del Museo de Zoología y Vertebrados de la universidad de California en Berkeley. La biblioteca tiene una colección de esqueletos, pieles y animales completos que han sido preservados. Curiosamente hoy en día el uso que mas recibe la colección es para comparar contaminantes ambientales, comparando las pieles viejas, con las de animales capturadas recientemente. También se pueden hacer comparaciones genéticas con el material de la colección.

La biblioteca no está abierta el público, pero por lo menos la podemos ver por medio de este video.

Today Google announced that they have improved their online translating tool Google Translate, and have come up with Google Translator Toolkit, which should give translations that “human touch” preventing you from sounding like Tarzan.

I was just trying it out, and I like it. It is a huge improvement, over the old tool which couldn’t do much more than give you the basic flavor of what was going on.

To use this new tool you can either cut and paste text into it, or upload entire documents.

Hoy Google anuncio que han mejorado su herramienta en línea de traducción Google Translate, y han creado Google Translator Toolkit, que pretender darle a las traducciones ese “toque humano” para que no suene como Tarzan.

Ahora estaba probando el traductor nuevo y me gusta. Realmente lo han mejorado, ya que el traductor viejo no podía dar más que una idea básica del texto.

The Swedish Pirate Party captured a seat in the EU parliament today after running a campaign solely based on reforming copyright laws! The party believes that Europe no longer has a balance between respecting authorship and promoting cultural development.

Some of the party’s claims include claims that all non-commercial copyright and use should be completely free, and that file sharing and p2p networking should be encouraged rather than criminalized. They also want the “monopoly” for copyright holders to be limited to 5 years after publication, this would certainly be a drastic change to the almost century long copyrights that are currently in awarded in the USA. They also want DRM technologies banned. Their party platform extends into patents as well, charging that the patenting of pharmaceuticals contributed to preventable deaths around the Third World every year.

This is certainly a radical platform compared to the corporate world we live in, but as a librarian, I’d like to see more information being shared, so I’ve happy to see this new party’s win! I’ll be keeping an eye on their political activity from here on.

El Pirate Party (Partido Pirata) Sueco acaba de capturar un puesto en el parlamento Europeo, tras manejar una campaña basada exclusivamente en la reforma de las leyes del derecho de autor. El partido cree que Europa ya no tiene un balance entre el respeto del derecho del autor, y la promoción del desarrollo cultural.

El partido alega que todos los derechos de autor no-comercial, al igual que su uso deberían ser completamente gratuitos, y que se debería promover el uso de reds p2p, en vez de criminalizar estas prácticas. También quieren que el “monopolio” actual que ha creado las leyes de derecho del autor sean limitadas a 5 años después de su publicación. Esta ultima sí que sería un cambio drástico a las leyes actuales en los EEUU que guardan estos derechos casi un singlo. El grupo también quiere que sean prohibidas las tecnologías de DRM. Su plataforma política también se extiende a las patentes farmacéuticas, alegando que esta práctica contribuye a cantidades de muertes prevenibles cada año en el Tercer Mundo.

Ciertamente una plataforma política bastante radical a comparación con el clima de corporaciones en el que vivimos. Pero como bibliotecaria, quiero ver más información accesible a todos, así es que celebro este logro, y estaré pendiente a ver qué nuevos cambios nos trae este grupo.

There is a great collection on Flickr of photographs from the battle at Normandie. The collection includes close to 3,000 images documenting the event; information and tags for this collection are all in French.

This was a project led by Conseil Régional de Basse-Normandie (Regional Council of Basse-Normandie) in 2004, for the D-Day 60th anniversary. The photo source for the project is the Archives Normandie 1939-1945. You can access the Flickr collection here.
