Have a challenging question no one seems to have an answer for? Try Project Wombat, a discussion list for difficult reference questions.

The project has three different versions, with the only difference being the level of moderation. You can look though their archives to get a sense of what others ask, and how their questions were answered. Some of the questions are on the serious side, such as where to  find a congress person’s voting record. Others are on lighter topics, such as finding a specific M*A*S*H* episode online.

Just be aware that once you submit a question you have just agreed to make whatever information you provided public, and no one will go into the archived to edit anything out.

If you are an information professional you might want to sign up and contribute some of your knowledge and expertise. If you are looking for answers, look no more!

El proyecto tiene tres versiones diferentes, la única diferencia es el nivel de moderación. Usted puede ver sus archivos para darse una idea de lo que otros preguntan, y cómo se responde a sus preguntas. Algunas de las preguntas son serías, como dónde encontrar el record de votación de un representante del congreso. Otras son más ligeros, como dónde encontrar un episodio en línea del programa M * A * S * H *.

Just as I was falling asleep last night listening to the BBC, I heard about a very interesting software called Haystack. Basically Haystack is software that was developed by Austin Heap, a San Francisco based “techy” to help Iranians bypass government censorship of the web, while simultaneously protecting their identity. The software will allow people to access the entire web, including all the social networking sites that have become popular with amature journalist and others wishing to do local, instant, reporting.

Heap created Haystack after hearing about all the government censorship of the web that was going on after the disputed elections. So far the software seems to be quite effective. There are plans of creating similar software to release in China.

Mientras me quedaba dormida anoche escuchando la BBC, oí hablar de un software súper interesante llamado Haystack. Básicamente Haystack es un software que fue desarrollado por Austin Heap, un “techy” basado en San Francisco, para ayudar a eludir la censura del gobierno iraní de la web, y al mismo tiempo proteger su identidad. El software permitirá a todos acceder a la totalidad de la web, incluyendo todos los sitios de redes sociales que se han hecho populares con el periodista aficionado y otros que deseen reportar a nivel local, e instantemente.

Heap desarrollo Haystack después de escuchar acerca de toda la censura del gobierno iraní, después de la disputa electoral. Hasta el momento, el software parece ser muy eficaz. Hay planes de crear un programa parecido para uso en la China.

Over the weekend I heard this interesting story on NPR’s “On The Media” about a new tool that will help you get a more balance view of complex stories. Dispute Finder is an added toolbar that will present you with alternative viewpoints to those expressed throughout the web.

Basically after downloading the program you visit a website and Dispute Finder will show you other sites with contrary arguments to the story. Knowing that many of us trust some sources, and discredit others, you can vote up or down results, and over time Dispute Finder will better understand how to effectively present you alternative viewpoints that you’ll trust.

You can also help contribute to the discussion by finding more information on the web that either supports or opposes a particular view and you can add these to the program so that others may find your information as well.

Sounds like a very useful tool to help us effectively discuss all kinds of topics with others.

Dispute Finder was developed at Intel’s Research Lab in Berkeley.

Durante el fin de semana escuché esta interesante historia en “On The Media”, de NPR, sobre una nueva herramienta que le ayudará a obtener una opinión más equilibrada de algún tema complejo. Dispute Finder se añade como un “toolbar” que le presentará puntos de vista alternativos a los expresadas alrededor de la web.

Básicamente, después de descargar el programa, visite un sitio web y Dispute Finder le mostrarán otros sitios que muestran argumentos contrarios. Sabiendo que muchos de nosotros confiamos en algunas fuentes, y desacreditar otras, usted puede votar hacia “arriba” o “abajo” los resultados, y en el futuro Dispute Finder empezará a comprender mejor cómo exponerle puntos de vista alternativos en los cuales podrá confiar.

También puede contribuir a la discusión buscando más información en la web que apoye o se opone a algún argumento en particular y lo podrá añadir al programa para que otros puedan encontrar su información.

Suena como una herramienta muy útil para ayudarnos a examinar de manera eficaz todo tipo de temas con los demás.
