This beautiful database set up by the Van Gogh Museum, gathers all of Vicent van Gogh’s letters, including facsimiles of the originals, transcriptions, translations, and the art work connected to each. The site allows you to browse by period, correspondent, and by place. You can also conduct basic and advance searches. The collection includes 902 letters, and 2,000 paintings (his own, and those of other artists) referenced in the letters. The site functions in English, French and Dutch.

The site will also give you some background information on van Gogh, his work, the time period, and the basics in his life. All this with the intention of drawing a more complex picture of the artist, something beyond the basic story that the man was plain old crazy.

Radical Cataloging: Essays at the Front by K. R. Roberto

The collection of essays in Radical Cataloging cover a wide range of issue in the cataloging world, and it’s not the boring book most non-catalogers might assume it is – but be warned that unless you already understand LCSH, MARC, and the like you probably won’t understand much of what you’ll find here.

Here I read essays on Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) and the many ways in which the fall short in describing the collections we catalog. There are essays on LCSH falling short for LGBT issues, music, and art. There’s an essays on Name Authority Records for American Indians, including a comparison on how these names are handled in the USA, Canada, Australian, and New Zealand.

I read about UPenn’s project in which they are creating records that use both LCSH and user added tags, and a project at Barnard College which collects and catalogs Zines.

A number of essays criticize the Library of Congress, and OCLC, often with lots of concrete examples to support their case. There are also a few essays that comment on new trends that wish to automate and/or outsource much of the work currently done by technical services departments.

This is what Massachusetts looks like in term of Portuguese speakers. / Así se ve Massachusetts en términos de luso parlantes.

The MLA created a database that maps out languages in the USA with information originating from the 2000 census. The site allows you to “build” maps according to language and which reflect information of the entire country, or each individual state. You can chart out information on these maps by percentages, counties, or zip code divisions. The site also allows you to compare the prominence of two languages to each other.

El MLA ha creado una base de datos que traza el uso de varios idiomas en los EE.UU. con la información proveniente del censo del 2000. El sitio le permite “construir” mapas de acuerdo al idioma y que reflejan la información de todo el país, o cada estado. Se puede trazar la información sobre estos mapas en porcentajes, condados o divisiones de código postal. El sitio también permite comparar la importancia entre lenguas.

On a separate part of this site you can also look up information by city, zip code, year. By looking here I can see that in Boston only 66.69% of the population are monolingual English speakers, while 33.30% speak a language other than English.

The Minnesota Institute for Early Career Librarians from Traditionally Underrepresented Groups bring together professional librarians in the early years of their career to develop skills that will help continue their professional development. The program will provide participants with skills in leadership, organizational behavior, and grant writing. The program will also help participants network with previous participants.

Next year’s program will run from July 10 – 16, 2010. Participants are expected to negotiate the time off from work, and pay a fee of $750, which includes the program, housing, some lunches, and a couple of receptions. Transportation to Minnesota is not included.
