My friend Alberto found this great video that states a simple, yet profound truth. We librarians, and really everyone, should take advantage of the wealth of information found at the local library, and learn something new every day. It would do wonders for our lives.

I just happen upon the blog “Career Q & A with the Library Career People” which specializes on professional career advice for librarians and other information professionals. The blog is maintained by a couple of librarians who respond to all types of questions related to career advancement. Some of the issues addressed include how to use LinkedIn adequately, how to transition into a position as a systems librarian, experience through volunteerism, resumes, and other related topics.

The poet Amy Lowell passed away in 1925, leaving behind a trust fund that once a year sponsors a USA-born poet to travel as much as they wish outside the North American continent. The scholarships favors poets with “progressive tendencies”, who shall commit to present at least three poems upon their return to North America.

Here’s an interview conducted with this year’s winner, Brian Turner on Here and Now.

If you write poetry and like to travel, I can’t think of a better deal! This makes me wish I wrote poetry…

La poeta Amy Lowell murió en 1925 dejando tras de sí una fondos que una vez al año premia a un poeta nacido en EE.UU. Dándole la oportunidad de viajar tanto como lo desee fuera del continente norteamericano. Las becas que favorece a poetas con “tendencias progresistas” que se comprometan a presentar al menos tres poemas a su regreso a América del Norte.

Yesterday I got an email announcing the beginning of La Cuña, an online forum dedicated to librarianship for and about Latin American and the Iberian Peninsula. The forum wants to gather Latinoamericanist who wish to exchange information on collection development, reference, instruction or any other issue that may come up.

I hope people from around the world join the forum, the more of us join, the livelier the conversation.

Need help finding something interesting to do? Well Goby could help you. It offers you three search boxes where you can input information about the type of activity you would like to do, location, and time. Hit search, and there you go, lots of options! When you click on the individual results you will be taken to the original source.

I ran a couple searches and found that some of the most obvious results for restaurants I knew about did not show up, although I did learn of a few other places I hadn’t heard of. While running other searched I noticed it said I had multiple hits in my results, but when I looked it was all the same place. If  Goby finds information from various sources, it can’t tell that they are all the same place/event.

Goby is no where close to perfect, but you might be lucky and find a new restaurant or event of interest.

Currently Goby only provides results for the USA.

¿Necesita ayuda para encontrar algo interesante que hacer? Goby puede ayudarle. Goby le ofrece tres cuadros de búsqueda donde se puede introducir información sobre el tipo de actividad que le gustaría hacer, la ubicación y el tiempo. De “enter”, y listo, y ahí tienes un montón de opciones! Al hacer clic sobre los resultados este lo llevara al sitio web donde origino la información obtenida.

Hice un par de búsquedas sobre restaurantes y Goby encontró algunos lugares que no conocía, pero omitió otros que debieron ser resultados obvios. En otras búsquedas Goby me mostro resultados múltiples, pero al mirar cada resultado me di cuenta que eran lo mismo. Si el programa encuentra la misma información en varios lugares, este no logra darse cuenta de que son el mismo lugar o evento.

Goby no es perfecto pero de pronto tenga suerte y logre encontrar restaurante nuevo o evento de interés.

Actualmente Goby sólo ofrece resultados de los EE.UU.

I just received an email announcing that the Consortium for Latin American Studies at the University of Illinois – University of Chicago is offering fellowship for faculty of non-USA colleges and universities who do not have easy access to major library collections. The Consortium’s libraries are one of the major Latin American collections in the USA, with emphasis on Mexico, Brazil, and the Andean countries.

Winners will receive a stipend that will help with transportation costs, and residence. Residencies can be between one and four weeks. For full details and the application, please see below.

The European Library portal can help you search the online catalogs to all the major libraries in the European Union. The project originates from the TEL-project which was set up as a cooperative framework that would facilitate access to all the major national and deposit collection from Europe’s national libraries. The European Library is financed by the Conference of European National Librarians (CENL).

The site offers users a variety of options when searching material. You can search as you would in any other OPAC, you can browse by country, or by library. The site also functions in about two dozen languages, although this does not mean the results will be in the language of your choice. This is because The European Library only serves as en intermediate to the variety of libraries that compose it, so the results you see are in the catalog for the library which own is. This means that to get the full experience with all these wonderful collections you would have to read many of the major European languages. Still, there are plenty of collections in English, and even if you can’t read all the instructions, I’m sure you can click away and find some interesting material. You can also try asking for help to find a specific item.

Take a look, there is an amazing array of collections on almost every topic to enjoy, including posters, journals, music, poetry, photography, atlases, cartoons, portraits, and more.
