Today I spent the day at the Library of Congress and loved it. I was there with my mother and brother and we took one of the guided tours of the building. This tour starts off with a short movie including a number of brief interviews with some of the librarians who highlight many of the treasures in the collection. The tour focuses more of the history of the library, and explain a good amount of the art found on the walls of the building, but doesn’t say much about the library’s holdings.

As a very brief recap; the library was established in 1800 by an act of Congress and was originally housed inside the Capitol building. In August of 1814 British troops set fire to the building, destroying the entire collection. Shortly thereafter, former president Thomas Jefferson offered to sell his entire collection to rebuild the library. Congress decides to buy his collection and begin to redevelop the library. This original collection is on display, and still in use.

In case you haven’t heard, the USA doesn’t technically have a national library, instead the Library of Congress (LOC) fills this role. And while the library works for the needs of Congress, they work to collect on all things USA related and their collections include millions of items from around the world. As the country’s legal deposit the LOC holds of copy of every single book published in the USA, and any book published abroad that has been translated for the USA market.

From the millions of items the LOC holds they have some of the most amazing collections in the country. The American Folklife Center gathers audio recordings on pretty much every posible topic, they collect and produce reading material for the blind and physically handicapped, American Memory provides access to many of their holdings related to American history in a variety of formats, THOMAS was launched in 1995 to make available legislation information, they also participate in the World Digital Library.

The LOC also has a lot of free resources for librarians. You can browse through their OPAC, search through their Authorities files, look through their Print & Photographs, and listen through their Sound Inventory. There is also the handy Z39.50 which allows you to run simultaneous searches through their catalogs and several other libraries around the globe.

All in all it was a great visit, even through it including a minor scare due to a suspected gunman in the area. The library was briefly locked down, but 30 minutes later we were on our way again. Before leaving the library we did see the oldest known map where the American continent is named as such, and a draft to the Declaration of Independence!

Hoy me pasé el día en la Biblioteca del Congreso y me encantó. Fui de visita con mi madre y mi hermano y tomamos una de las visitas guiadas del edificio. Este tur comienza con una breve película incluyendo una serie de breves entrevistas con algunos de los bibliotecarios que ponen de relieve muchos de los tesoros de la colección. La gira se centra más de la historia de la biblioteca, y explicar una buena cantidad del arte encontradas en las paredes del edificio pero no dice mucho acerca de los colección de la biblioteca.

Como un resumen muy breve, la biblioteca fue creada en 1800 por una ley del Congreso y fue alojado en el interior del edificio del Capitolio. En agosto de 1814 las tropas británicas prendieron fuego al edificio destruyendo toda la colección. Poco después el eh presidente Thomas Jefferson ofreció a vender toda su colección para reconstruir la biblioteca. El Congreso decide comprar su colección y empezar a rehabilitar la biblioteca. Esta colección original está en exhibición, y todavía en uso.

En caso de que no han oído, los EE.UU. técnicamente no tiene una biblioteca nacional, en su lugar la Biblioteca del Congreso (LOC) cumple este papel. Y mientras que la biblioteca trabaja para abastecer las necesidades del Congreso, también recoger material relacionado con EE.UU., además sus colecciones incluyen millones de artículos de todo el mundo. Como el depósito legal del país, el a LOC guarda copia de cada libro publicado en los EE.UU., y cualquier libro publicado en el extranjero que se ha traducido para el mercado de EE.UU..

Entre los millones de artículos de la LOC esta tiene algunos de los coleccione más sorprendentes en el país. El American Folklife Center reúne grabaciones de audio de prácticamente cualquier tema, recogen y producen material de lectura para ciegos y disminuidos físicos, el American Memory proporciona acceso a muchas de sus propiedades relacionadas con la historia de Estados Unidos en una variedad de formatos, THOMAS fue puesto en marcha en 1995 para que información sobre legislación fuese disponible de manera gratuita, y también participan en la Biblioteca Digital Mundial.

La LOC también tiene una gran cantidad de recursos gratis para los bibliotecarios. Usted puede navegar a través de su catálogo en línea, buscar a través de sus archivos de autoridades, mirar a través de sus láminas y fotografías, y escuchar a través de su inventario de sonido. En total fue una visita estupenda, incluso incluyendo un pequeño susto debido a un supuesto agresor armado en la zona. Antes de salir de la biblioteca que vimos el mapa más antiguo conocido en el que el continente americano se nombra como tal, ¡y un proyecto de la Declaración de la Independencia!

Between mid November and mid December the boat “El Navegante de la Amazonía” navigated along the Amazon and Putumayo rivers in Colombia offering training in the use of computers and the web. This project was developed by Colombia’s Ministry of Technology and aims at helping people in this part of the country to access the world first hand through the web.

El Navegante de la Amazonía, is the third such project developed by the Colombian Ministry of Technology. In April 2008, El Navegante de la Conectividad traveled 45 days along the Magdalena River, and reached close to 6,000 residents. During November 2009, El Navegante del Pacífico traveled through the states of Nariño, Cauca, Valle del Cauca and  Chocó, reaching 8,500 residents.

The Navegante de la Amazonía is 18 x 4 meters (59 x 13 ft) and is equipped with 20 computers which had access to the web via satellite.

Entre mediados de noviembre y mediados de diciembre el barco “El Navegante de la Amazonía” navego a lo largo de los ríos Amazonas y Putumayo, en Colombia, ofreciendo entrenamiento en el uso de computadores e Internet. Este proyecto fue desarrollado por el Ministerio de Tecnología Colombiano y tiene como objetivo ayudar a la gente en esta parte del país a acceder al mundo de manera directa través de la web.

It’s been almost fifty years since the Peace Corps first started sending volunteers around the world to help in a variety of projects. To commemorate this history and anticipating many new adventures to come, the Peace Corps has created a digital library which encourages current and past volunteers to submit photographs and stories of their experiences abroad. At the very minimum the collection wishes to gather photographs and stories from every country they have sent volunteers to, and every decade.

Over the years I’ve met a lot of Peace Corps volunteers, all with amazing stories; I’ve even the child of a former volunteer, so  I’ll certainly be keeping an eye on this collection.

A Peace Corps Gringo in Colombia

Ya van casi cincuenta años desde que el Cuerpo de Paz comenzó a enviar voluntarios por todo el mundo para ayudar con una variedad de proyectos. Para conmemorar esta historia y proveyendo que habrán muchas aventuras por venir, el Cuerpo de Paz ha creado una biblioteca digital que alienta voluntarios actuales y pasados a presentar fotografías y relatos de sus experiencias en el extranjero. Como mínimo la colección desea recoger fotografías e historias de todos los países donde han enviado voluntarios, y de cada década.

A través de los años he conocido muchos voluntarios del Cuerpo de Paz, todos con increíbles historias, incluso soy hija de un ex-voluntario; sin duda estaré mirando el desarrollo de esta colección.

Mi Vida Loca is a web based tutorial created by the BBC to help you learn Spanish. The lessons consist mainly of videos that will teach you key phrases for specific situations. The videos include a local host who takes the viewer out. During the duration of the video can turn the subtitles, in English and Spanish, on or off. At various points in the scene you are expected to make decisions, and say out loud the correct phrase. The video will wait until you make your choice.

Mi Vida Loca is great little tutorial, and while it won’t make you completely fluent in Spanish, it can teach you many key phrases you can use while traveling. Keep in mind that the scenes and expressions are very Spanish, as opposed to Latin American.

The BBC offers similar tutorials for French, German, Italian, Greek, Portuguese, Chinese, and many more languages.

Mi Vida Loca es un tutorial basado en la web creado por la BBC para ayudarle a aprender español. Las lecciones consisten principalmente en videos que te enseñará frases clave para situaciones específicas. Los videos incluyendo un anfitrión local que saca al espectador a conocer la ciudad. Durante la duración del vídeo se puede activar subtítulos en Inglés y Español. En varios puntos de la escena que se espera para tomar decisiones, y decir en voz alta la frase correcta. El vídeo se espere hasta que haga su elección.

El tutorial de Mi Vida Loca es realmente bueno y aunque no lo hará completamente fluido en español, si puede enseñar muchas frases clave que podrá utilizar mientras viaja. Tenga en cuenta que las escenas y expresiones son muy español, a diferencia de latinoamericanas.

La BBC ofrece tutoriales similares para aprender francés, alemán, italiano, griego, portugués, chino, y muchos idiomas más.

On Thursday I attended the webinar titled “Opening up Library Systems through Web Services and SOA” which was co-hosted by WebJunction and ALA Tech Source, and moderated by Marshall Breeding. The session was very interested and presented three different cases of how Integrated Library Systems can be made more accessible, regardless of whether they run on Open Source software or not.

The hour and a half session consisted of three, half hour sessions in which three different presenters spoke about individual projects in which ILS have been made more open. The first presenter was Berit Nelson from Sirsidynix Corporation, who spoke about how Enterprise is using customized GUIs to allow staff to achieve more complex work projects without needing to be tech pros. She also mentioned that her team is working to ensure that Enterprise is anticipating the future RDA roll out by including appropriate tools that will update MARC to RDA standards.

Next came Bill Erickson from Evergreen & Equinox. Erickson works with Evergreen which is Open Source and he highlighted some of the technology aspects of his work. He talked about how Supercat code provides access to bib. records and holdings data in a variety of formats, including MARC, MODS, and HTML, among others.

Last, but not least was Tamar Sadeh from Ex Libris’ Open-Platform Program. Sadeh talked about how Meta Lib is improving federated searching, and mentioned the work that David Walker from Cal State is doing to create a intuitive and customizable search system. She also mentioned EL Commons CodeShare with provides visitors with code for various ILS platforms and functions. There is also the Elympics, a competition for the best Ex Libris based code extensions.

At the high of attendance, 467 people had logged in to listed to the presentation. Some asked questions, many listened and learned. And for those of you that weren’t able to listen to this webinar live, WedJunction archives these events on their website and makes them available for free (This webinar’s archive; full archives). All in all it was a great presentation, and very informative. And I love that WebJunction is making these webinars available to everyone for free. What a marvelous way to contribute to the library community!

El jueves participé en el seminario titulado “La apertura de los Sistemas de Bibliotecas a través de Servicios Web y SOA”, que fue co-organizado por WebJunction y ALA Tech Source, y moderado por Marshall Breeding. La sesión estuvo muy interesante y presento tres casos diferentes de cómo diferentes sistemas de bibliotecas integrados pueden ser más accesibles, independientemente de si funcionan con software de código abierto o no.

La sesión de hora y media se componía de tres sesiones de media hora en la que los panelistas hablaron sobre los diferentes proyectos que ilustran como varios sistemas de bibliotecas integrados se han hecho más abierto. La primer ponente fue Berit Nelson de SirsiDynix Corporation quien habló acerca de cómo Enterprise esta usando utilizando interfaces gráficas de usuario personalizadas para permitir que el personal pueda lograr proyectos de trabajo más complejos sin necesidad de ser profesionales de alta tecnología. También mencionó que su equipo está trabajando para adaptarse sus productos al futuro despliegue de RDA mediante la inclusión de instrumentos adecuados que actualizarán las normas MARC a las de RDA.

Luego presento Bill Erickson de Evergreen y Equinox. Erickson trabaja con Evergreen que es de código abierto y destacó algunos de los aspectos tecnológicos de su trabajo. Habló de cómo el código Supercat proporciona acceso al registros bibliograficos en una variedad de formatos incluyendo MARC, MODS, y HTML, entre otros.

Por último, pero no menos importante fue Tamar Sadeh de Open Ex Libris Open-Platform Project. I just received an email with a call for simultaneous interpreters – English/Arabic to translate at IFLA‘s annual conference, which will take place in Gothenburg, Sweden, August 10 – 15, 2010. The title for the upcoming conference is “Open access to knowledge – promoting sustainable progress.”

Here is the description for the position.

As the IFLA Center for Arabic Speaking Libraries at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, we are seeking simultaneous interpreters from all over the Arab world to work together on enhancing the Arab intellectual community and serve our delegates at the IFLA Conference in Gothenburg. The work entails simultaneous translation of some of the conference sessions.

Accepted applicants will be granted the following:
- Free travel to and from Gothenburg (Economy class)
- Visa fees
- Free Accommodation in one of the best hotels at a walking distance area from the Conference Convention Center – Bed only
- 40.00 Euro daily per-diem
- Free registration for the conference

Please note that no other fees will be paid for doing the translation work.

The following qualifications are required for application:
- B.A. or B.S. degree
- No less than 5 year experience in the library and information science profession
- Excellent command of the English and the Arabic languages
- Experience in simultaneous interpretation in previous conferences

This Thursday Marshall Breeding will be moderating a webinar discussing whether a integrated library system be open without being open source. He will explore the ways that an Application Programming Interface (API) can help libraries wring data and functionality out of their ILS, extend its functionality, and interact with other applications.

I’ve seen biblioburros, a camel mobile library, a traveling library in a suitcase, and now here’s a bibliomoto offering library services around the Huarmey province in Peru. The bibliomoto is part of the Biblioteca Comunal Obraje which aims at promoting literacy and increasing a general level of education among the population. The project has a blog which offers examples of the work they are doing within the community.

He visto biblioburros, una bibliotecas móviles de camellos, una maleta viajera, y ahora aquí hay una bibliomoto en la provincia de Huarmey en el Perú. La bibliomoto es parte de la Biblioteca Comunal Obraje la cual tiene como objetivo promover la alfabetización y aumentar el nivel general de educación de la población. El proyecto tiene un blog que ofrece ejemplos de la labor que están haciendo en la comunidad.
