Yesterday the Berkman Center and eIFL announced the launch of Copyright for Librarians. This handy wiki aims at offering librarians a great reference tool for all things related to copyright and the law.

The wiki is divided into nine different modules, each covering a specific aspect of copyright. The modules are design for use in the classroom, or allow for self-exploration.

Ayer el Berkman Center y eIFL anunció el lanzamiento de Copyright for Librarians (Derecho de autor para bibliotecarios). Este práctico wiki tiene como objetivo nos a los bibliotecarios una excelente herramienta de referencia para todo lo relacionado con los derechos de autor y la ley.

El wiki se divide en nueve módulos diferentes, cada uno cubre un aspecto específico del derecho de autor. Los módulos están diseñados para el uso en el aula, o para permitir la auto-exploración.

Jeff Howe has a large following on Twitter  – @crowdsourcing – and is trying to get as many people as possible to read the same book and discuss it. Sounds like a great social experiment. Right now the top choice for the book is Fahrenheit  451.

My father just forwarded me an email he received from AbeBooks.com which gathered the top 10 books written by librarians. Here is the content of the email and their selection of books.

AbeBooks loves librarians. Librarians love AbeBooks. (And we think everyone else loves librarians too aside from the bean-counters who keep cutting their budgets.) This email salutes those great lovers of books, literacy and reading – the world’s librarian community – and we’re highlighting some wonderful books written by librarians themselves.

Who but a person surrounded by books could be better qualified to write? Many an author has been born and developed in the stacks. The list does not feature the following librarian/writers – John Braine, Lewis Carroll, Archibald MacLeish, Nancy Pearl, Kit Pearson, Benjamin Franklin, Christopher Okigbo, Marcel Proust, and Ina Coolbrith – but we could easily have included their books.

• The Less Deceived, Philip Larkin. The 1955 poetry collection that made his name – Larkin was a librarian at the University of Hull. \ La colección de poesía de 1955 que lo hizo famoso – Larkin fue bibliotecario de la Universidad de Hull.

UCLA has three grants for people interested in using the holdings of the Latin American collection on campus. Awards of up to $1,500 will help candidates with transportation, lodging, and meals.

The Library of Congress (LOC) has 40 openings for summer internships! The focus of this year’s program is to increase access to the collections and increasing awareness of their digital preservation program by making them better know. Applicants must be U.S.A. citizens and must be enrolled in an accredited institution of higher education.

Subject Areas of Interest that applicants can apply for include;

Yale Law Library has begin collecting bobbleheads representing a variety of personalities in the legal world. The collection will be part of their rare books library, which currently has an exhibit displaying many of their holdings.

Some of the collection highlights include dolls depicting William H. Rehnquist, 16th chief justice of the United States, Justice David H. Souter, and Justices Sandra Day O’Connor and John Paul Stevens.

La Biblioteca de Derecho de Yale ha empezando a coleccionar muñecos bobbleheaeds, representando una variedad de personalidades en el mundo jurídico. La colección será parte de su biblioteca de libros raros, que actualmente cuenta con una exposición que muestra muchos de estos muñecos.

Algunas de las personalidades representadas en la colección son William H. Rehnquist, 16° Presidente del Tribunal Supremo de Estados Unidos, el magistrado David H. Souter, y los jueces Sandra Day O’Connor y John Paul Stevens.

The folks from BiblioRed were so kind as to send me some additional images of the two libraries I visited, the Biblioteca Pública Parque El Tunal, and the Biblioteca Pública Virgilio Barco, and I wanted to share them. They also send me some great facts about the library systems. Thank you!

• During 2009 BibloRed received 4,437,945 visitors, who used 7,314,052 items.

• Programs promoting literacy and writing spread to 176,920 users, during the course of 8,927 activities. Culture Advocacy programs reached152,263 attendees.

• Between 2003 and 2008 177,238 people have joined the library network; in 2008 alone 21,425 users joined BiblioRed; 46,610 renewed their membership; and 357,707 items were lent out.

• BiblioRed holdings spans more than 370,000 volumes, including the, children, general, literature and audiovisual collections of seven libraries; all of which can be checked out.

• Membership is free for children under 12 years of age and has a cost of 5,000 pesos for members 13 years or older.

• Every day BiblioRed lends out approximately 1,000 items to a variety of different audiences.

La gente de BiblioRed fueron tan amable de enviarme algunas imágenes adicionales de las dos bibliotecas que visité, la Biblioteca Pública Parque El Tunal y la Biblioteca Pública Virgilio Barco, y quería compartirlas.
