A few weeks ago I was in Buenos Aires, and what people say is true, it is a city of books, they were even selected as the World’s Book Capital for 2011. Regardless of the neighborhood, chances are you can find a book sellers within a few blocks, and touristy areas have even more book stores. Better yet, all the bookstores were full of people.

Buenos Aires even has a bookstore famous for it’s beauty. El Ateneo, located at the intersection of Santa Fe and Callao is located inside an old theater, and has kept it’s splendor. Every guide book I’ve seen for BsAs encourages you to visit, and it’s definitely worth it.

I tried visiting their National Library, but unfortunately arrived there on a holiday, and found it closed. This odd looking building was inaugurated by then president Carlos Menen, in 1992, although plans for it’s construction began as early as 1961. The building is in Recoleta, and is located where the former Unzué Palace stood, and which used to be the official residence of Juan Peron and Evita.  Today, just in front of the library, a sculpture of Evita commemorates her life, and nearly you will find a lovely park full of art sculptures, the Universidad de Buenos Aires Law School, and the Flor de Metal.

If you happen to be in Buenos Aires between April 19 and May 7th make sure to visit the 38th International Book Fair. It’s the biggest in Latin America, and I’m told always full of wonderful finds.
