BabelWithMe.com is a new method to communicate with people who don’t speak (or write) our same language. It seems very easy to use; just visit the site, choose a login name, and then email your partner the permalink you are assigned, and voilà!

I was trying to find examples of how people are using this, and all I found was this conversation titled IranElection. It seems that the other people logged in are maybe trying to see how BabelWithMe works. I logged into this conversation first in English, then in Spanish, and both times it gave me adequate translations for the conversation.

Simultaneous translations are provided by Google, which recently improved all its translating tools.

This could be a great tool for virtual reference.

UNESCO’s Open Training Platform gathers thousands of existing, free training courses on a wide range of subjects. Currently it offers 3,426 training resources, covering 293 categories (including agriculture, education, languages, and health and sanitation, among others). Content originates from a variety of partners, including several educational projects, and foundations.

Resources are organized by Categories, Communities, and Resource types. Each course will clearly show its format, language, producer, and a brief description. Some of the courses are audio files, other are in PDF form, all are accessible to everyone.

El Open Training Platform de la UNESCO es una plataforma que reúne miles de cursos de capacitación gratis, los cuales cubren una amplia gama de temas. Actualmente se ofrece 3.426 recursos de formación, que abarcan 293 categorías (incluyendo agricultura, educación, idiomas, salud e higiene, entre otros). El contenido proviene de una variedad de socios, entre ellos varios proyectos educativos, y fundaciones.

Los recursos están organizados por categorías, comunidades y tipos de recursos. Cada curso le mostrara claramente su formato, idioma, productor, y una breve descripción. Algunos de los cursos son archivos de audio, otros están en formato PDF, todos son accesibles a todos.

Today Google announced that they have improved their online translating tool Google Translate, and have come up with Google Translator Toolkit, which should give translations that “human touch” preventing you from sounding like Tarzan.

I was just trying it out, and I like it. It is a huge improvement, over the old tool which couldn’t do much more than give you the basic flavor of what was going on.

To use this new tool you can either cut and paste text into it, or upload entire documents.

Hoy Google anuncio que han mejorado su herramienta en línea de traducción Google Translate, y han creado Google Translator Toolkit, que pretender darle a las traducciones ese “toque humano” para que no suene como Tarzan.

Ahora estaba probando el traductor nuevo y me gusta. Realmente lo han mejorado, ya que el traductor viejo no podía dar más que una idea básica del texto.

The Ministry of Culture and the Autonomous Communities in Spain have joined forces to offer a new online reference system called “Pregunte: Las Bibliotecas Responden” (Ask, The Libraries will Answer). The project’s goal is to answer questions through email, and virtual reference, in an effort to encourage the active use of local libraries and their services.

The services functions 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and librarians promise to respond to inquiries within 3 days.
The site functions in Spanish, Catalan, Basque, Galician, and English.

El Ministerio de Cultura, y las Comunidades Autónomas en España han creado un nuevo portal diseñado a ofrecer servicios de referencia en línea llamado “Pregunte: Las Bibliotecas Responden“. El proyecto responderá preguntas por medio de correo electrónico, y referencia virtual en esperando que esto estimule el uso de las bibliotecas.

El servicio funciona las 24 horas del día, 365 días al año, y se comprometen en contestas toda pregunta en 3 días.

El sitio funciona en castellano, catalán, vasco, gallego, e inglés.

Today the World Digital Library goes live! The project has been in the works for about 4 years now, and was initially conceived by James Billington of the USA Library of Congress (LOC), and developed by UNESCO and LOC. The site will function in seven languages and will showcase digital treasures from around the globe and throughout the ages. It is hoped that the site will help promote international understanding and expand non-English, non-Western content online.

¡Hoy la Biblioteca Digital Mundial se lanza en vivo! El proyecto ha estado en las planeación cerca de 4 años y fue inicialmente concebido por James Billington de la Biblioteca del Congreso de EE.UU. (LOC), y desarrollado por la UNESCO y la LOC. El sitio funcionará en siete idiomas y mostrará tesoros digitales de todo el mundo y a lo largo de los siglos. Se espera que el sitio ayudará a promover el entendimiento internacional y expandir el contenido de la web en idiomas diferentes al inglés, y de regiones no occidentales.

This really is a fascinating collection. You can search it by geographic region, time period, topic, holding institution, and type of item. While looking  you’ll find old photographs, curated videos, detailed explanations of the items, and links to share these treasures through some of the most commons web 2.0 venues, such as Facebook and Twitter.

Esta realmente es una colección fascinante. Se puede buscar por región geográfica, período de tiempo, tema, institución, y el tipo de elemento. The Chicano Studies Center at UCLA has uploaded over 41,000 songs to an online repository titled Musica de la Frontera. A number of these songs date back as early as 1900, and cover a wide range of musical genres, including Tejano, Chicano and Mexican American. Full access to the archive is only available to UCLA patrons; the rest of us can listen to 50 seconds of each song, look at the record labels, and read background information on the song.

This project received generous help from the Arhoolie Foundation, and Los Tigres del Norte.

El Chicano Studies Center en UCLA ha digitizado mas de 41.00 canciones a una base de datos titulada Música de la Frontera. Algunas de las canciones incluidas datan de 1900, y cubren un gran rango de estilos de música, incluyendo Tejano, Chicano, y música Mexicoamericana. Acceso completo a esta colección se reserva para aquellos afiliados con UCLA; el resto de nosotros podemos escuchar 50 segundos de cada canción, además de ver las caratulas de los discos, y leer información sobre cada canción.

Sometimes is seems like all my friends are trying to learn or improve their Spanish, which I love, and encourage as much as I can. So here’s a tool that might help you all!

El Castellano.org is a site that tries to gather web resources that will aid in learning Spanish, both the European and Latin American versions of it. The site offers various dictionaries, including one specialized in Argentine Spanish and another for botany. There are also a couple sections that explain certain parts of the language where new learners might easily be confused; for example the difference between “dentro” and “adentro”. It has a number of stories related to the language’s history, including information on Nebrija, author of the first text of Spanish language grammar (1492) and the first Spanish language dictionary (1495).

You’ll also find links to other websites this group recommends, and links to Spanish language radio stations around the world, so you can start educating your ears. There’s a page titled Spanishpoint where you’ll find links to (mostly) stories about the language around the world. Some of the current entries include a discussion about the use of a “neutral” version of the language that can be used across all of the Spanish speaking world, and an article on the Spanish spoken by Jews in Spain back in the 15th century. You’ll also find a lot of other random stories there.

Interestingly, the site was established by a group of Spanish speaking people from around the world, having members in Argentina, Spain, Uruguay, and Brazil.

And a few stats to encourage you to learn more Spanish;

• Spanish is the official language of 21 countries around the globe.
• It’s an oficial language to the UN, the EU, the OAS, and NAFTA.
• Spanish is the 4th language in the world in terms of number of speakers, with 330 million of us.

Las Comadres & Friends National Latino Book Club is a partnership between Las Comadres, Association of American Publishers (AAP) and Borders to promote the reading of Latino writers.

The group meets once a month in a selected venue (usually a Borders book store) to discuss the previously selected book. Discussions are conducted in English as are the selected books, although many are available in Spanish as well. I assume this is done to make the group accesible to more people. The other neat thing is that whenever possible the author participates in these events as well, via teleconference.

Membership is open to everyone, and if you wish to join them for the next session the book currently being read is “Notorious“, by Michele Martinez; the meeting is March 30th. Here’s a list of all the venues nationwide.

Las Comadres & Friends National Latino Book Club es una asociación entre Las Comadres, Association of American Publisher (AAP) y la tienda de libros Borders para promover la lectura de autores Latinos.

El grupo se reúne una vez al mes en un sitio designado (usualmente una tienda de Borders) para discutir el libro previamente seleccionado. Las discusiones son en ingles, así como los libros seleccionados, aunque usualmente los libros también se encuentran en traducciones al español. Otra cosa interesante de este proyecto es que cuando es posible el autor participa en los eventos, usualmente vía teleconferencia.

Membresía al grupo esta abierto a todos, y si desea atender la próxima reunión el libro a leer es “Notorious” de Michele Martínez. El grupo se reunirá el 30 de Marzo. Aquí encontrara la lista de todos los sitios de reunión alrededor del país.

I recently ran across this online radio station that offers news in a completely bilingual format. The appropriately named station, Radio Bilingüe, is based in California, with offices in San Francisco, and Salinas, and has been serving the USA based Latino community for 15 years.

Radio Bilingüe has three mayor programs Línea Abierta, Noticiero Latino and Rocking Da House. All offer a variety of news and music of interest to the Latino community. There are also longer series covering special topics, the current one discusses educational needs for Latinos is this time of economic crisis. All of the programs offer audio, and some have full transcriptions as well.

Hace poco encontré esta emisora radial en línea que ofrece noticias en un formato completamente bilingüe. La emisora, apropiadamente llamada Radio Bilingüe está basada en California, y tiene oficinas en San Francisco y Salinas, y ha estado trabajando para la comunidad Latina en EEUU por 15 años.

Radio Bilingüe tiene tres programas principales, Línea Abierta, Noticiero Latino and Rocking Da House. Todos ofrecen una variedad de música y noticias de interés a la comunidad Latina. También tienen programas de análisis más largos; el tema actual analiza las necesidades educacionales de los Latinos durante esta crisis económica. WorldLinQ is a site created at Queens Public Library which gathers a wide range of useful websites in a variety of different languages. The site offered link to public websites offering information on news, education, recreation, health, science, and a variety of other topics. The site connection you to relevant links in a multitude of languages, each entry annotated both in the original language and in English. Do note that because each language entry links to relevant resources in the corresponding language, entries vary in content.

The site was created about 10 years ago with initial funding from At&T, and was devised as an non-traditional way of reaching out to the very diverse library community of Queens borough. Currently it functions in 15 different languages, including Spanish, Italian, Romanian, and French, just to name a few. But this ambitious project hopes to one day function on all 150+ languages in use in the Queens Public Library community. If you are fluent in a language not yet on the site, you may consider offering your help with gathering useful links and providing the basica annotations needed.

WorldLinQ es un sitio web creado por la Biblioteca Pública de Queen (NY) que reúne una gran variedad de recursos útiles en una cantidad de idiomas. La página ofrece enlaces a sitios que ofrecen información sobre las noticias actuales, educación, recreación, salud, las ciencias, y otra cantidad de temas.
