The New York Public Library is releasing a number of new apps to give you better access to their collection. The apps are designed to do a number of things;

• NYPL Mobile connects you to the online public catalog allowing you to request material and give you directions to the branch library that has the item you are looking for. / NYPL Móvil que se conecta con el catálogo público en línea y le permite solicitar material y le dará direcciones a la sucursal de la biblioteca que tiene el artículo que está buscando.
• Biblion is an online publication for the iPad which offers stories about the libraries collections and commentary about their significance. / Biblion es una publicación en línea para el iPad que ofrece historias sobre las colecciones de las bibliotecas y comentarios sobre su significado.
• Find the Future is another game app connected to an exhibit at the main research library at Fifth Ave. The game asks users to find various objects and books within the collection and awards points for photographing them. / Encuentre el Futuro es otra aplicación de un juego conectado a una exposición en la biblioteca de investigación principal sobre Fifth Ave. El juego pide a los usuarios encontrar varios objetos y libros de la colección y le da puntos  por fotografiarlos.

Currently these apps are only available for Apple devices, but the Droid version should be arriving in the fall. All apps are free.

Actualmente estas aplicaciones sólo están disponibles para los dispositivos de Apple, pero la versión Droid debe llegar en el otoño. Todas las aplicaciones son gratuitas.

Here is Google’s new Body Browser. This new lab allows has been described as the “Google Earth” for the body. To use this lab you will need a web browser with WebGL support (the site will prompt you when you first visit it).

Aquí esta el navegador nuevo de Google, Body Browser. Este nuevo laboratorio se ha descrito como el “Google Earth” para el cuerpo. Para utilizar este laboratorio necesita un navegador web con soporte WebGL (el sitio le proporcionara el enlace necesario).

This tool allows the user to take a closer look at the human anatomy and learn the names of each body part. You can also use the search box to locate particular items. The tabs on the left will help “add and remove” the various layers of the body.

Esta herramienta permite al usuario tomar una mirada más cercana a la anatomía humana y aprender los nombres de cada parte del cuerpo. También puede utilizar el cuadro de búsqueda para localizar partes especificas. El cuadro de navegación a la izquierda le ayudará a “agregar y quitar” las diferentes capas del cuerpo.

Esta tarde asistí a un seminario web de ALA sobre E-Gobierno. La sesión ofreció información sobre algunos sitios buenos donde podemos encontrar información gubernamental (a nivel local, estatal y federal), algo de información sobre los usuarios de estos recursos, y algunas estadísticas sobre el tema.

The first panelist was Nancy Fedrericks, e-government librarian, Pasco County Public Library (Florida). Fedrericks shared some resources found at her local library, including a section on their website, a blog, and some online tools to help patrons use these resources. She talked about the use these resources get at her library, and mentioned that it is best to be very careful about privacy issues when helping patrons with these resources, and when at all possible ask them to get help from a friend or family member, instead of the librarian.

El primera presentadora fue Nancy Fedrericks, bibliotecaria de e-gobierno en la Biblioteca Pública del Condado de Pasco (Florida). Fedrericks compartio algunos recursos que se encuentran en su biblioteca local, incluyendo una sección en su página web, un blog, y algunas herramientas en línea para ayudar a los usuarios a utilizar estos recursos. También habló sobre el uso que estos recursos recibe en su biblioteca y mencionó que lo mejor es tener mucho cuidado en cuando a asuntos de privacidad al ayudar a los usuarios con estos recursos, y en cuanto sea posible pedirles que busquen ayuda de un amigo o familiar, en lugar del bibliotecario.

She also shared the website LawHelp.org which offers help finding local legal help and information. The site offers resources for every state. Fredericks also has older presentations on this topic on Webjunction. Here are a few of her presentations; E-Government: Tips, Tools, and Best Practices, Re-tooling Frontline Staff with E-government Resources, and Community Accessed E-Government Websites.

También compartió en enlace LawHelp.org sitio web que ofrece ayuda para encontrar assistencia legal e información jurídica. El sitio ofrece recursos para cada estado de EE.UU. The next presenter was Bill Sudduth, Head, Government Information and Microforms, Newspapers and Maps, University of South Carolina. Sudduth shared a number of website that are great examples of how to best offer e-gov resources. His collection of site included e-gov at every level. At the federal level there is USA.gov, and GPO Access, which offered free electronic access to documents produced by the Federal Government. Virginia.gov was a good example of a state site, and on the local level, Boston’s website took the top prize!

El siguiente ponente fue Bill Sudduth, Jefe de Información Gubernamental, Microformas, Prensa y Mapas de la Universidad de Carolina del Sur. Sudduth compartió una serie de sitio web que son excelentes ejemplos de la mejor manera de ofrecer recursos de e-gov. Su colección de sitio incluye e-gobierno a todos los niveles. A nivel federal esta USA.gov, y GPO Access, que ofrece acceso electrónico gratuito a los documentos Gobierno Federal (EE.UU). Virginia.gov es un buen ejemplo de un sitio del estado, ¡y a nivel local el sitio web de Boston se gano el primer premio!

The third and last presenter was John Bertot, Director, Center for Library & Information Innovation, University of Maryland. Bertot talked about the intersection of public libraries and E-government. He began by sharing a map of all the public libraries in the USA commenting that they really cover the entire nation, and that now that governments at every level are cutting resources, the public library has often had to fill this gap.

El tercer y último presentador fue John Bertot, Director del Centro de Innovación de Bibliotecas e Información de la Universidad de Maryland. Bertot habló sobre la intersección de las bibliotecas públicas y el gobierno electrónico. Empezó por compartir un mapa de todas las bibliotecas públicas en los EE.UU. comentando que realmente cubren toda la nación, y que ahora que los gobiernos a todos los niveles están reduciendo servicios y recursos, la biblioteca pública a menudo ha tenido que llenar este vacío.

Bertot share some information from the Center for Library & Information Innovation (CLII) in the College of Information Studies at the University of Maryland illustrating this relationship between libraries and e-gov. This site includes a lot of statistical information on the subject, and these handy fliers (this is the e-gov one), that will give you a great starting point if you need to advocate for these services at your library.

Bertot compartió información del Centro de Innovación de Bibliotecas e Información (CLII) en el Colegio de Estudios de la Información en la Universidad de Maryland que ilustra esta relación entre las bibliotecas y el e-gov. Este sitio incluye una gran cantidad de información estadística sobre el tema y estos útiles folletos (este es el de e-gov) que le dará un gran punto de partida si necesita abogar por estos servicios en su biblioteca.

At the end Bertot talked a little about the increasing need for librarians to be able to fully understand how to work with e-gov material. Because of this need the University of Maryland has established a program for E-Government Librarianship!

Al final Bertot habló un poco acerca de que cada vez es mayor la necesidad de que como bibliotecarios podamos trabajar de manera competente con este material. Debido a esta necesidad la Universidad de Maryland ha establecido un programa de Bibliotecologia para E-Gobierno!

The whole program was good, and best of all it was free! I’m already looking forward to more interesting webinars!

The question oriented map allows you to access information from a single question for all the countries on the 2010 report. The questions cover six major sections; Introduction, Estimated Number of Libraries, Libraries and the Internet, Legal Issues, Social Issues, and Ethics and IFLA Initiatives. Each section is further subdivided. Some of the subdivisions include “Women and Freedom of Access to Information,” “Libraries and Environmental Sustainability,” “User Privacy and Anti-terror legislation,” “Digital Divide,” and “Violations of Intellectual Freedom” among many others.

Take a look at the full report or the sections that interest you most, it’s full of interesting information.

Hace un par de semanas IFLA publicó su último Informe Mundial y por primera vez esta disponible en línea en una base de datos completa que permite hacer búsquedas, ¡e incluyendo un interfaz de mapa! Puede descargar el informe completo, o utilizar los mapas para seleccionar sólo las secciones que le interesen. Uno de los mapas le permite navegar el informe por país, dándole la opción de ver el informe completo de un país, ver solo parte de ellos o comparar simultáneamente cierta información sobre varios países.

El otro mapa le permite ver la información por tema ofreciéndole las respuestas de una sola pregunta para todos los países incluidos en el informe de 2010. Las preguntas abarcan seis secciones: Introducción, Número estimado de Bibliotecas, Bibliotecas e Internet, Asuntos Legales, Asuntos Sociales y Ética y de las iniciativas de IFLA. Cada sección se subdivide. Algunas de las subdivisiones incluyen “La mujer y la Libertad de Acceso a la Información”, “Las bibliotecas y la Sostenibilidad Ambiental”, “Privacidad para usuarios y la legislación anti-terrorista”, “Brecha Digital” y “Violaciónes de los Derechos de Libertad”, entre muchos otros.

OpenScholar is a new framework developed at Harvard that will allow scholars to build and maintain high quality websites. The idea is to allow academics to easily create useful, and elegant websites which showcase their publications, classes, blog entries, biography, calendar of events, and many other items.

Here is the test example from the video.

OpenScholar is open source, so you can use it for free. It is build on a Drupal framework, and includes a multitude of plugins for easy customization.

OpenScholar es un nueva plataforma desarrollada en Harvard que permiten a académicos investigadores a crear y mantener sitios web de alta calidad. La idea es permitirles crear sitios web útiles y elegante, de manera fácil, y que exhiban sus publicaciones, cursos, entradas de blog, biografía, calendario de eventos, y otra información.

El proyecto Libro al Viento se ha asociado con la Biblioteca Luis Ángel Arango (BLAA) para traer varias biografías sobre los grandes de Colombia al público en general. A diferencia de otras publicaciones, esta colección de bicentenario también se ofrece en formato digital. Los tres títulos de la colección son,“¡Viva la Pola!”, “¡Soy Caldas!” y “La antorcha brillante” (biografía de Antonio Nariño).

La BLAA también está organizando otros eventos que se llevan a cabo en la biblioteca. Si visita la BLAA encontrara varias exposiciones sobre el bicentenario, incluyendo “Palabras que nos cambiaron: lenguaje y poder en la independencia”, “La caricatura en Colombia a partir de la independencia” (esta incluye recorrido virtual), y “Habeas Corpus: que tengas [un] cuerpo [para exponer].” La biblioteca también organiza el XV Congreso Colombia de Historia que se llevara a cado del 26 al 30 de julio de 2010. Además tiene otra página que recoge artículos sobre la independencia de Colombia y otros países suramericanos. Y como si todo esto no fuera suficiente también tiene un blog donde están recogiendo noticias sobre más eventos del bicentenario.

El ministerio de cultura también tiene una cantidad de eventos programados, al igual que una cantidad de colecciones en línea que están disponibles para todos. Vea aquí 200 años de historia Colombiana, escuche la música que hemos gozado por dos siglos. Vea los Diálogos de la Independencia; aquí encontrara una seria de videos por tema de una cantidad de historiadores tratando varios temas de la historia Colombiana. 1810: Independencias al Aire recoge 22 capítulos de una serie radial recrea algunos de hechos históricos y de cotidianidad Colombiana. La pagina titulada Centros Municipales de Memorias tiene un mapa interactivo que le dará mas información sobre las celebraciones que se llevan a cabo en cada localidad. La Línea de Tiempo le mostrara imágenes y otra información de los últimos doscientos años, década por década. La Agenda de Celebraciones le dará más información sobre 32 eventos que se llevan a cado a lo largo y ancho de la nación.

El sistema de BiblioRed está organizando un ciclo de conferencia que trata nuestra historia, y algunas que tratan la historia de las comunidades indígenas. Todas con entrada libre. El Museo Nacional monto una cantidad de colecciones en línea que tratan el tema del bicentenario. Aquí encontrara Carteles, cartillas, y radio. Y aquí hay una lista de los eventos que se llevan a cabo en Bogotá.

Eager to celebrate the Colombia’s bicentenary I’ve gather some information about events and collections that have been organized in Colombia and virtually. Let the celebrations begin!

The Project Libro al Viento has partnered with the Luis Ángel Arango Library (BLAA) to bring several biographies of the great men and women of Colombia to the general public. Unlike other publications, this bicentennial collection will also be offered in digital format. The three titles in the collection are, “¡Viva la Pola!”, “¡Soy Caldas!” y “La antorcha brillante” (biografía de Antonio Nariño). The BLAA is also organizing other events that are being held in the library. The Ministry of Culture also has a number of scheduled events, as well as a number of online collections that are available to everyone. See Diálogos de la Independencia, here you will find a series of videos by subject of a number of historians discussing various topics in Colombian history. 1810: Independencias al Aire contains 22 chapters of a radio series which recreates some of the historical facts and daily realities which make up our history. The page entitled Centros Municipales de Memorias has an interactive map that will give you more information on the celebrations that take place in each location. The Línea de Tiempo will show images and information of the last two hundred years, decade by decade. The Agenda de Celebraciones will give you more information on 32 events that are taking place across the nation.

The BiblioRed system is organizing a series of conference on our history, some dealing with the history of indigenous communities. Admission to all these conferences is free. The National Museum mounted a number of online collections that address the bicentennial. Here you will find posters, brochures, and radio audio. And here is a list of events that are taking place in Bogotá.

¡A principios del mes estuve en Montreal y pude visitar La Grande Bibliothèque! Esta biblioteca es una de las bibliotecas públicas mas grandes de la ciudad y la colección es parte de la Biblioteca y Archivos Nacionales de Québec. Supongo que como esta región de Canadá incluye un movimiento separatista vibrante que deben sentir la necesidad de tener su propia biblioteca y archivos nacionales. Política aparte, la biblioteca cuenta con cerca de 4 millones de artículos, la mayoría de los cuales están en francés y 30% en Inglés. Esta biblioteca es una de las colecciones más populares en el mundo de habla francesa, y el domingo que estuve de visita, el lugar realmente estaba lleno de gente.

On their website the library breakups their various collections with brief explanations of what you may expect to find. They have a large collection covering Quebec’s Heritage, archives that date back to the 17th century, resources for genealogical work, maps, government publications, and material which has been digitized, including an RSS for the most recent additions to this collection.

En su sitio web de la biblioteca separa sus diversas colecciones con una breve explicación de lo que usted puede encontrar en cada una. Tienen una gran colección que abarca el Patrimonio de Québec, archivos que se remontan al siglo 17, recursos para el trabajo de genealogía, mapas, publicaciones gubernamentales, y material que ha sido digitalizado, incluyendo un RSS para las adiciones más recientes a esta colección.

The library also offers many of the usual services you would expect from a large public library; they have a calendar of events which includes a number of activities for small children, guided tours of the library in French or English, computer workshops, and ongoing exhibitions.

La biblioteca también ofrece muchos de los servicios habituales que cabría esperar de una gran biblioteca pública; tienen un calendario de eventos que incluye una serie de actividades para los más pequeños, visitas guiadas a la biblioteca en francés o en Inglés, talleres de computación, y exposiciones en curso.

Para utilizar el sitio que usted tendrá que crear una cuenta, pero el acceso a la mayoría de revistas (no todas) es gratuito.

A fines del mes pasado la ministra española de cultura, Ángeles González-Sinde anunció el lanzamiento de Hispana: Colecciones Digitales de Archivos, Bibliotecas y Museos españoles. Hispana reúne más de un millón de artículos digitales originando de 121 instituciones españolas, incluyendo bibliotecas, museos, archivos, así como organizaciones privadas y públicas. El sitio también incluye un directorio de proyectos de digitalización en curso en España, en la actualidad incluye más de 400 entradas. En esencia, es la versión española de Europeana. El sitio funciona en Español, Inglés, Catalán, Vasco y Gallego.

El Navegante de la Amazonía, is the third such project developed by the Colombian Ministry of Technology. In April 2008, El Navegante de la Conectividad traveled 45 days along the Magdalena River, and reached close to 6,000 residents. During November 2009, El Navegante del Pacífico traveled through the states of Nariño, Cauca, Valle del Cauca and  Chocó, reaching 8,500 residents.

The Navegante de la Amazonía is 18 x 4 meters (59 x 13 ft) and is equipped with 20 computers which had access to the web via satellite.

Entre mediados de noviembre y mediados de diciembre el barco “El Navegante de la Amazonía” navego a lo largo de los ríos Amazonas y Putumayo, en Colombia, ofreciendo entrenamiento en el uso de computadores e Internet. Este proyecto fue desarrollado por el Ministerio de Tecnología Colombiano y tiene como objetivo ayudar a la gente en esta parte del país a acceder al mundo de manera directa través de la web.

El Navegante de la Amazonía es el tercero de estos proyectos desarrollados por el Ministerio Colombiano de Tecnología. En abril del 2008, El Navegante de la Conectividad viajó 45 días a lo largo del río Magdalena, y ofreció capacitación a casi 6.000 residentes de la región. Durante noviembre de 2009 El Navegante del Pacífico recorrió los estados de Nariño, Cauca, Valle del Cauca y Chocó capacitando a 8.500 habitantes.
