Last night I received an email from Julia Watson with the Online Education Database and she shared this list of the 10 Most Impressive Elementary School Libraries in the U.S. The list caught my attention because of the amazing stories included here. On this list you will find stories about school libraries involved in staging Shakespeare plays, and another that produces its own energy! In general they are encouraging stories of libraries who are embracing new technologies, and helping form young minds.

She talked about the use these resources get at her library, and mentioned that it is best to be very careful about privacy issues when helping patrons with these resources, and when at all possible ask them to get help from a friend or family member, instead of the librarian.

She also shared the website LawHelp.org which offers help finding local legal help and information. The site offers resources for every state.
The next presenter was Bill Sudduth, Head, Government Information and Microforms, Newspapers and Maps, University of South Carolina. Sudduth shared a number of website that are great examples of how to best offer e-gov resources. His collection of site included e-gov at every level. At the federal level there is USA.gov, and GPO Access, which offered free electronic access to documents produced by the Federal Government. Virginia.gov was a good example of a state site, and on the local level, Boston’s website took the top prize!

The third and last presenter was John Bertot, Director, Center for Library & Information Innovation, University of Maryland. Bertot talked about the intersection of public libraries and E-government. He began by sharing a map of all the public libraries in the USA commenting that they really cover the entire nation, and that now that governments at every level are cutting resources, the public library has often had to fill this gap.

Bertot share some information from the Center for Library & Information Innovation (CLII) in the College of Information Studies at the University of Maryland illustrating this relationship between libraries and e-gov. This site includes a lot of statistical information on the subject, and these handy fliers (this is the e-gov one), that will give you a great starting point if you need to advocate for these services at your library.

At the end Bertot talked a little about the increasing need for librarians to be able to fully understand how to work with e-gov material. Because of this need the University of Maryland has established a program for E-Government Librarianship!

The whole program was good, and best of all it was free! I’m already looking forward to more interesting webinars!

During the 90s Medellín has known the world over for its violence, but today it’s an entirely different place, and much of this new-found peace and prosperity can be linked to the massive investment the city made in public libraries, and other social programs. Medellín created a system of public libraries and strategically located them in some of the poorest, and most violent neighborhoods. One of these new libraries, the Parque Biblioteca León de Greiff, lives in a building which used to he a jail. What beautiful symbolism, from prison to place of learning. In each neighborhood these libraries have become places to learn, build community, and socialize.

Here’s a blog entry I wrote about my visit to another one of these libraries in Medellín, the Parque Biblioteca España - Santo Domingo Savio.

I wish Juárez much luck with this transition.

And obviously “abroad” is defined by where we start out, so I’ve gathered resources both for coming to the USA as well as for going to other countries around the world.

If you are interesting in an exchange program to work or study abroad in the field of library sciences there are a number of options;

Si usted esta interesado en un programa de intercambio para trabajar o estudiar en el extranjero en el campo de las bibliotecas y la ciencias de la información hay un número de opciones;

Fulbright: This is one of the more prestigious awards anyone can get, and a great opportunity to explore another country first hand. From the Fulbright website it seems their library program is quite vibrant, and some of their more recent participants have worked in countries such as Taiwan, Germany, China, Egypt, and Honduras. And remember that the Fulbright also offers people the opportunity to study in the USA. And just for a taste of what you might do with a Fulbright scholarship in the library field, read the story of Heather Lea Moulaison who used her scholarship to work in Morocco. For USA citizens there is more information here; for non-USA citizens, please look here.

And while going abroad on a pre-established program might be more convenient, you can also set up your own exchange program, just make sure you are given full authorization from your local university or workplace, and you leave everything clearly outlined in writing. It would be best to write up a contract explaining what you will be doing abroad, at which institution, what you plan to get out of the program, how this will benefit your local institution, and when you plan to be back.

If you choose this route, you will have to do your own research and find out what educational institutions offer the courses or experience you are looking for, if they welcome international students, and how much this will cost.

If you want to work abroad you will need to reach out to your professional network and explore options this way. You may also want to check the ALA / IRRT Sister Library Initiative wiki. This wiki is designed to facilitate relationships between libraries, but you can use it to learn more about libraries who are already open to the idea of sharing resources and knowledge across borders.

Professional Associations: Networking in a huge part of a successful experience abroad, so consider looking into some of the library associations that are concerned with international relations.

There are probably even many more options and resources to help plan a professional trip abroad, so if you have other tips or resources I’ve missed, please let me know and I will add them to this list.

Taking after Don Quijote, Finding Dulcinea is a site that evaluates millions of website and offers you only the best, and most trustworthy ones. The site offers over 300 web guides covering a vast array of topics, information on the news that goes beyond headlines, and entertainment on the web.

I looked through their web guides for Latin American studies. Here I found links to Latin American Journals and Research, Academic Programs, and links to a couple research collections. There aren’t hundreds and hundreds of links under every heading, and that’s exactly the point, to only see a few quality results.

Another great thing about this site is that it functions in several languages! The entire site is available in English and Spanish, and many of the web guides are also available in Chinese and Russian!

Amazingly, Finding Dulcinea is powered by real human beings, not the latest tech trend, or search algorithm. They call themselves the “Librarian of the Internet,” and as a good librarian they focus on quality information.

The folks behind Finding Dulcinea also run the sites Sweet Search and SweetSearch2Day. Sweet Search is a search engine, actually it’s several search engines guided towards several different audiences. There is one for school librarians, one focused on biographies, and one focused on Social Studies, among others. Sweet Search 2 Day aims at offering you the a daily curated view of the best of the web.

These are all great sites; Check them out!

P.S. (3:00pm) – Mark Moran (Founder & CEO of Dulcinea Media) just let me know that their section titled “On this Day” is also available in Spanish under the title of “Hoy en la Historia.” And Finding Dulcinea can also be found on Facebook; here is their page so you can join them.

A few days ago I received an email from someone at SR Education Group showing me a site they have put together on free online courses. I’d never heard of this group before so I did a bit of research and found out they are an online marketing company that works for online universities and other educational institutions that have online components. With this bit of background information in mind, here are my views on Online Courses.

OnlineCourses.net gathers information from a multitude of online venues which offer educational material for free! The site is well organized, grouping courses by subject area (Biology, Engineering, Foreign Languages, Mathematics, Social Sciences, Women Studies, and many more). You can click on any of these broader topics and find more information on the individual courses they have found, and what educational institution offers them. For instance, under Women Studies you can find courses on Feminist Political Though and International Women’s Voices, both offered by MIT.

Actually a lot of the courses linked to on this site are offered by MIT, which makes perfect sense since MIT is one of the main players in the Open Courseware consortium. MIT’s participation in this project is rather amazing, since they offers basically every course they teach for free to the world. If you wish to learn more about this project, please see my blog entry about it.

The OnlineCourses site is good, and well organized, so visit it to find out what free courses are out there, or visit the OpenCourseware site; you’ll basically find the same information at either site.

Hace unos días recibí un correo electrónico de alguien en el Grupo de Educación SR mostrándome un sitio web que han creado y que reúne una cantidad de cursos en línea gratis. Nunca había oído hablar de este grupo, así es que hice un poco de investigación y descubrí que son una empresa de en línea de marketing y que trabajan para las universidades en línea y otras instituciones educacionales que tienen componentes en línea. Con este poco de contexto en mente, aquí están mis puntos de vista sobre Online Courses;

A couple of days ago my friend Liz called with a work related questions; Her employer wants to offer all the employees at this business the opportunity to improve their English, and she wanted suggestions. (I love that all my friends are regularly turning to their librarian friend for all sorts of questions!)

My first thought was her local community college. The community college usually offers a wide range of courses at an affordable price and tend to offer classes during the day and the evening, thus accommodating almost anyone’s schedule. Bunker Hill Community College in Boston has even started offering courses literally in the middle of the night to accommodate even the most demanding schedules. The other advantage of the community college is that you don’t have to be enrolled in a full program, you can just take a couple courses here and there for life enrichment.

My second though was to take advantage of the resources of her local public library. As far as I can tell, all public libraries in the USA have some language learning material, either to improve your English or to learn another language. These language sections are usually well labeled, but if you can’t find them, ask the librarian. Many of these courses are tools such as language aids on CDs, videos, and workbooks, and all should circulate.

But this isn’t all, some public libraries offer language learning software accessible with your public library ID and password from the comfort of your home. The BPL offers me access to Powerspeak and Auralog, both programs that will teach me Spanish, French, Mandarin, German, Dutch, and ESOL, all for free and from the comfort of my kitchen table!

And if all this isn’t enough, go visit your local public library and find their language learning center. Most public libraries have computer terminals loaded with state of the art equipment and software that will help you learn a new language or improve on a language you already know. Chances are you might even find a group of people who meet at the library to practice a language ; you can join them as well.

Of course, these courses might not be sophisticated enough for some people’s language needs, but they are an excellent starting point.
