Con ganas de celebrar el bicentenario de Colombia aquí recojo información sobre algunos eventos y colecciones que se han organizado en Colombia y virtualmente. ¡A celebrar se dijo!

El proyecto Libro al Viento se ha asociado con la Biblioteca Luis Ángel Arango (BLAA) para traer varias biografías sobre los grandes de Colombia al público en general. A diferencia de otras publicaciones, esta colección de bicentenario también se ofrece en formato digital. Los tres títulos de la colección son,“¡Viva la Pola!”, “¡Soy Caldas!” y “La antorcha brillante” (biografía de Antonio Nariño).

La BLAA también está organizando otros eventos que se llevan a cabo en la biblioteca. Si visita la BLAA encontrara varias exposiciones sobre el bicentenario, incluyendo “Palabras que nos cambiaron: lenguaje y poder en la independencia”, “La caricatura en Colombia a partir de la independencia” (esta incluye recorrido virtual), y “Habeas Corpus: que tengas [un] cuerpo [para exponer].” La biblioteca también organiza el XV Congreso Colombia de Historia que se llevara a cado del 26 al 30 de julio de 2010. Además tiene otra página que recoge artículos sobre la independencia de Colombia y otros países suramericanos. Y como si todo esto no fuera suficiente también tiene un blog donde están recogiendo noticias sobre más eventos del bicentenario.

El ministerio de cultura también tiene una cantidad de eventos programados, al igual que una cantidad de colecciones en línea que están disponibles para todos. Vea aquí 200 años de historia Colombiana, escuche la música que hemos gozado por dos siglos. Vea los Diálogos de la Independencia; aquí encontrara una seria de videos por tema de una cantidad de historiadores tratando varios temas de la historia Colombiana. 1810: Independencias al Aire recoge 22 capítulos de una serie radial recrea algunos de hechos históricos y de cotidianidad Colombiana. La pagina titulada Centros Municipales de Memorias tiene un mapa interactivo que le dará mas información sobre las celebraciones que se llevan a cabo en cada localidad. La Línea de Tiempo le mostrara imágenes y otra información de los últimos doscientos años, década por década. La Agenda de Celebraciones le dará más información sobre 32 eventos que se llevan a cado a lo largo y ancho de la nación.

El sistema de BiblioRed está organizando un ciclo de conferencia que trata nuestra historia, y algunas que tratan la historia de las comunidades indígenas. Todas con entrada libre. El Museo Nacional monto una cantidad de colecciones en línea que tratan el tema del bicentenario. Aquí encontrara Carteles, cartillas, y radio. Y aquí hay una lista de los eventos que se llevan a cabo en Bogotá.

Eager to celebrate the Colombia’s bicentenary I’ve gather some information about events and collections that have been organized in Colombia and virtually. Let the celebrations begin!

The Project Libro al Viento has partnered with the Luis Ángel Arango Library (BLAA) to bring several biographies of the great men and women of Colombia to the general public. Unlike other publications, this bicentennial collection will also be offered in digital format. The three titles in the collection are, “¡Viva la Pola!”, “¡Soy Caldas!” y “La antorcha brillante” (biografía de Antonio Nariño). The BLAA is also organizing other events that are being held in the library. If you visit the BLAA you’ll find several exhibitions on the bicentennial, including “Palabras que nos cambiaron: lenguaje y poder en la independencia”, “La caricatura en Colombia a partir de la independencia” (this includes a virtual tour), and “Habeas Corpus: que tengas [un] cuerpo [para exponer].” The library also organizes the XV Congress on Colombian History that market will take 26 to July 30, 2010. It also has another site that features articles on the independence of Colombia and other South American countries. As if all this were not enough it also has a blog where you can get more news about other events of the bicentennial.

The Ministry of Culture also has a number of scheduled events, as well as a number of online collections that are available to everyone. See here for 200 years of Colombian history, listen to the music we’ve enjoyed for two centuries. See Diálogos de la Independencia, here you will find a series of videos by subject of a number of historians discussing various topics in Colombian history. 1810: Independencias al Aire contains 22 chapters of a radio series which recreates some of the historical facts and daily realities which make up our history. The page entitled Centros Municipales de Memorias has an interactive map that will give you more information on the celebrations that take place in each location. The Línea de Tiempo will show images and information of the last two hundred years, decade by decade. The Agenda de Celebraciones will give you more information on 32 events that are taking place across the nation.

The BiblioRed system is organizing a series of conference on our history, some dealing with the history of indigenous communities. Admission to all these conferences is free. The National Museum mounted a number of online collections that address the bicentennial. Here you will find posters, brochures, and radio audio. And here is a list of events that are taking place in Bogotá.

I arrived in Bogota last night and today I’m off to visit a few libraries, my first stop is the Biblioteca Nacional de Colombia. As Colombia’s national library, one of their main responsibilities is serving as the country’s legal deposit.

The collection includes monographs, journals, and a large music collection. The library’s music collection includes both written music and recordings, a number of which were recoded in the library, back when they had a complete recording studio on the top floor. You can access all the digitized music scores here. They have also created a musical map of the country which will guide you through the various musical genres.

The library has also created a digital library where it is uploading and making freely available much of its collection.

Right now there is also a very complete exhibit about “La Voragine” (The Vortex) by José Eustacio Rivera, on the first floor of the library.

Anoche llegué a Bogotá y hoy me voy a visitar algunas bibliotecas, mi primera parada es la Biblioteca Nacional de Colombia. Como biblioteca nacional una de sus principales responsabilidades es servir como depósito legal del país.

La colección incluye monografías, publicaciones periódicas, y una gran colección musical. Colección de música de la biblioteca incluye tanto partituras como grabaciones, muchas de las cuales se grabaron en la biblioteca, cuando esta tenía un estudio de grabación completo en la planta superior. Puede acceder a toda la partituras digitalizadas aquí. También han creado un mapa musical del país que le guiará a través de los distintos géneros musicales.

La biblioteca también ha creado una biblioteca digital donde se carga y hacer libremente disponibles gran parte de su colección.

Ahora también hay una exposición muy completa sobre “La Vorágine” de José Eustasio Rivera, en el primer piso de la biblioteca.

This Book Is Overdue!: How Librarians and Cybrarians Can Save Us All by Marilyn Johnson

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I picked up a galley of this book while attending ALA Midwinter, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Marilyn Johnson became interested in librarians while researching her previous book on obituaries, and running into a few fascinating librarians death notices. A few quirky librarians may have initially caught her attention, but she is clearly enamored with the field, the staff, and the whole concept of sharing information for free.

Johnson’s book focuses on public libraries in the USA North East, but the cases she discusses, and examples she gives can be applied to the whole country, and much of it can extend to many other types of libraries. Through the book she discusses the initial pains of migrating information to emerging technologies, working hard to reach out to new users, coming up with creative programing, and the painful adjustments many librarians have had to deal with during this economic downturn.

In the book you will read about the Connecticut librarians who challenged the Patriot Act, an academic librarian who has an amazing zine collection, librarians who have migrated to Second Life, and the fascinating networks they have formed. You’ll also read about an archivist who boxes and how this very detail made him the perfect candidate to save a large boxing collection in Miami. Johnson also talked to the “dog” librarians, and several librarians at NYPL.

The chapter on what is happening at NYPL really stuck with me, and it’s a situation that is being replicated all over. Basically the financial crisis has forced them to reevaluate how the library runs, who their main users are, and how they may best serve them with reduced funds. Here Johnson interviews librarians working on new technologies, another one who loves helping authors do research, a couple more that have begun courting local artists and showing them what treasures the libraries has for them. She also spoke to a few librarians who’s departments have been eliminated and job descriptions have been significantly altered. Many of these librarians express concern about the patrons they had served, and the collections they have come to know so well, while questioning if their expertise will really be of most service in their new positions.

Throughout the book Johnson also shares her experiences learning about the field. She comments on the librarian who taught her now to store screen shots, instead of trying to book mark everything she liked on the web. She also talked about a course she took on archival practices, and tells us about her learning curve with new tools in the field.

The book is a very quick, thoroughly enjoyable read, and Johnson’s praise for librarians, archivists, and so called “cybrarians” is music to this librarian’s ears!

Recogí una copia sin corregir de este libro mientras asistía a ALA Midwinter, y lo disfruté muchísimo. Marilyn Johnson inicialmente se interesa en el mundo de las bibliotecas mientras hacia investigación para su libro anterior sobre los obituarios. Ahí se tropezó con varios anuncios fascinantes basados en la vida de bibliotecarios. La autora podrá haber empezado este proyecto después de interesarse por ciertos bibliotecarios particulares, pero pero esta claro que está fascinada con el mundo de las bibliotecas, su personal, y todo el concepto de compartir información de forma gratuita.

El libro de Johnson se centra en las bibliotecas públicas en el noreste de EE.UU. pero los casos que discute y los ejemplos que da se puede aplicar a todo el país, y muchos pueden extenderse a muchos otros tipos de bibliotecas. A través del libro Johnson nos cuenta de los dolores iniciales de la migración de información a nuevas tecnologías, el arduo trabajando para llegar a nuevos usuarios, como organizar programación creativa, y los dolorosos ajustes que muchos bibliotecarios han tenido que vivir durante esta recesión económica.

En el libro usted leerá acerca de los bibliotecarios de Connecticut que impugnaron el Patriot Act, un bibliotecario académico que tiene una colección asombrosa de mini revistas (zines), los bibliotecarios que han emigrado a Second Life, y las redes profesionales tan fascinantes que se hayan formado. También leerá acerca de un archivero quien boxea y cómo este detalle lo convirtió en el candidato perfecto para guardar una gran colección sobre el boxeo en Miami. Johnson también habló con la bibliotecarios para “perros” bibliotecarios y varios bibliotecarios en la biblioteca publica de Nueva York (NYPL).

El capítulo sobre lo que está sucediendo en NYPL fue el que mas me impacto, y es una situación que se repite en todas partes. Básicamente, la crisis financiera ha obligado a revaluar cómo funciona la biblioteca, quienes son sus principales usuarios, y cómo se puede prestar mejores servicios con fondos reducidos. Aquí Johnson entrevista bibliotecarios que trabajan con tecnologías emergentes, otro bibliotecaria que le encanta ayudar a los autores haciendo investigación para sus libros, un par de jóvenes que han comenzado a cortejar a artistas locales y les muestra los tesoros que bibliotecas tiene para ellos. También entrevisto a varios bibliotecarios de departamentos que han sido eliminados y a quienes les han cambiado sus obligaciones laborales. Muchos de estos bibliotecarios expresan preocupación por sus usuarios, y las colecciones que han llegado a conocer tan bien, mientras se cuestiona si su experiencia laboral será realmente aprovechada al máximo en sus nuevos trabajos.

A lo largo del libro de Johnson también comparte sus experiencias de aprendizaje sobre el campo. Ella comenta sobre la bibliotecaria que le enseñó como capturar y almacenar imágenes de la web, en lugar de tratar de reservar la marca todas las paginas que le gustaba. También habló de un curso que tomó en las prácticas de archivo, y nos habla de su curva de aprendizaje con las nuevas herramientas en el campo.

El libro se puede leer muy rápido, es entretenido y divertido de leer, ¡y el elogio de Johnson para los bibliotecarios, archiveros, y los llamados “cybrarians” es música para los oídos de esta bibliotecaria!

Today I spent the day at the Library of Congress and loved it. I was there with my mother and brother and we took one of the guided tours of the building. This tour starts off with a short movie including a number of brief interviews with some of the librarians who highlight many of the treasures in the collection. The tour focuses more of the history of the library, and explain a good amount of the art found on the walls of the building, but doesn’t say much about the library’s holdings.

As a very brief recap; the library was established in 1800 by an act of Congress and was originally housed inside the Capitol building. In August of 1814 British troops set fire to the building, destroying the entire collection. Shortly thereafter, former president Thomas Jefferson offered to sell his entire collection to rebuild the library. Congress decides to buy his collection and begin to redevelop the library. This original collection is on display, and still in use.

In case you haven’t heard, the USA doesn’t technically have a national library, instead the Library of Congress (LOC) fills this role. And while the library works for the needs of Congress, they work to collect on all things USA related and their collections include millions of items from around the world. As the country’s legal deposit the LOC holds of copy of every single book published in the USA, and any book published abroad that has been translated for the USA market.

From the millions of items the LOC holds they have some of the most amazing collections in the country. The American Folklife Center gathers audio recordings on pretty much every posible topic, they collect and produce reading material for the blind and physically handicapped, American Memory provides access to many of their holdings related to American history in a variety of formats, THOMAS was launched in 1995 to make available legislation information, they also participate in the World Digital Library.

The LOC also has a lot of free resources for librarians. You can browse through their OPAC, search through their Authorities files, look through their Print & Photographs, and listen through their Sound Inventory. There is also the handy Z39.50 which allows you to run simultaneous searches through their catalogs and several other libraries around the globe.

All in all it was a great visit, even through it including a minor scare due to a suspected gunman in the area. The library was briefly locked down, but 30 minutes later we were on our way again. Before leaving the library we did see the oldest known map where the American continent is named as such, and a draft to the Declaration of Independence!

Hoy me pasé el día en la Biblioteca del Congreso y me encantó. Fui de visita con mi madre y mi hermano y tomamos una de las visitas guiadas del edificio. Este tur comienza con una breve película incluyendo una serie de breves entrevistas con algunos de los bibliotecarios que ponen de relieve muchos de los tesoros de la colección. La gira se centra más de la historia de la biblioteca, y explicar una buena cantidad del arte encontradas en las paredes del edificio pero no dice mucho acerca de los colección de la biblioteca.

Como un resumen muy breve, la biblioteca fue creada en 1800 por una ley del Congreso y fue alojado en el interior del edificio del Capitolio. En agosto de 1814 las tropas británicas prendieron fuego al edificio destruyendo toda la colección. Poco después el eh presidente Thomas Jefferson ofreció a vender toda su colección para reconstruir la biblioteca. El Congreso decide comprar su colección y empezar a rehabilitar la biblioteca. Esta colección original está en exhibición, y todavía en uso.

En caso de que no han oído, los EE.UU. técnicamente no tiene una biblioteca nacional, en su lugar la Biblioteca del Congreso (LOC) cumple este papel. Y mientras que la biblioteca trabaja para abastecer las necesidades del Congreso, también recoger material relacionado con EE.UU., además sus colecciones incluyen millones de artículos de todo el mundo. Como el depósito legal del país, el a LOC guarda copia de cada libro publicado en los EE.UU., y cualquier libro publicado en el extranjero que se ha traducido para el mercado de EE.UU..

Entre los millones de artículos de la LOC esta tiene algunos de los coleccione más sorprendentes en el país. El American Folklife Center reúne grabaciones de audio de prácticamente cualquier tema, recogen y producen material de lectura para ciegos y disminuidos físicos, el American Memory proporciona acceso a muchas de sus propiedades relacionadas con la historia de Estados Unidos en una variedad de formatos, THOMAS fue puesto en marcha en 1995 para que información sobre legislación fuese disponible de manera gratuita, y también participan en la Biblioteca Digital Mundial.

La LOC también tiene una gran cantidad de recursos gratis para los bibliotecarios. Usted puede navegar a través de su catálogo en línea, buscar a través de sus archivos de autoridades, mirar a través de sus láminas y fotografías, y escuchar a través de su inventario de sonido. The Stendhal University of Grenoble has joined forces with the city’s public library to create the digital collection Les Manuscrits de Stendhal. The site includes Stendhal‘s personal correspondence, as well as reflections on travels, literature and philosophy. And in case you are about to start looking for the manuscripts of  “The Red and the Black” and “The Charterhouse of Parma,” know that both were destroyed after publication, as was tradition back then. The website looks quite complete, and only functions in French.

La Universidad Stendhal de Grenoble se ha unido con la biblioteca pública de la ciudad para crear la colección digital Les Manuscrits de Stendhal. El sitio incluye la correspondencia personal de Stendhal así como reflexiones sobre viajes, literatura y filosofía. Y en caso de que este a punto de empezar a buscar los manuscritos de “Rojo y Negro” y “La cartuja de Parma,” sepa que ambos fueron destruidas después de su publicación, como era tradición en aquel entonces. El sitio web se ve bastante completo, y funciona sólo en francés.

The European Library portal can help you search the online catalogs to all the major libraries in the European Union. The project originates from the TEL-project which was set up as a cooperative framework that would facilitate access to all the major national and deposit collection from Europe’s national libraries. The European Library is financed by the Conference of European National Librarians (CENL).

The site offers users a variety of options when searching material. You can search as you would in any other OPAC, you can browse by country, or by library. The site also functions in about two dozen languages, although this does not mean the results will be in the language of your choice. This is because The European Library only serves as en intermediate to the variety of libraries that compose it, so the results you see are in the catalog for the library which own is. This means that to get the full experience with all these wonderful collections you would have to read many of the major European languages. Still, there are plenty of collections in English, and even if you can’t read all the instructions, I’m sure you can click away and find some interesting material. You can also try asking for help to find a specific item.

Take a look, there is an amazing array of collections on almost every topic to enjoy, including posters, journals, music, poetry, photography, atlases, cartoons, portraits, and more.

El portal The European Libray le puede ayudar a buscar en los catálogos en línea de todas las bibliotecas importantes en la Unión Europea. El proyecto se origina en el proyecto-TEL que se creó como un marco de cooperación que facilitara el acceso a todas las grandes colecciones nacionales y colección de depósito de las bibliotecas nacionales de Europa. Archivo Chile is a site that gathers information in all formats primarily about Chile’s social/popular movements, and secondarily about Latin America. The site also emphases human rights, and leftist politics.

The site is rather cumbersome to navigate, but full of interesting material. You can find documents on Salvador Allende, Gabriela Mistral, Violeta Parra, and Miguel Enríque Espinoza. You’ll also find information on various women’s movements in Chile, resistance movement by the country’s various indigenous groups, and “Los 119“. Los 119 were a group of 119 people who were disappeared during Pinochet’s rule.

There are also sections for music (including mp3 files), and the arts.

The site also allows for participation, and offers a section where people can share news, and memories about the millions who disappeared during Chile’s dirty war.

In terms of the rest of Latino America, you can find documentation of Colombia’s Camilo Torres, and Argentina/Cuba’s Che Guevara, among others.

El sitio es bastante complicado para navegar, pero está lleno de material interesante. Usted puede encontrar documentos sobre Salvador Allende, Gabriela Mistral, Violeta Parra, y Miguel Enrique Espinoza. Recently the Vanderbilt library has digitized and made available a portion of their material on Colombia, specializing in 19th century culture and history, titled The J. León Helguera Collection of Colombiana. Currently the collection is divided into three main categories; broadsides, 1825-1972; pamphlets (including novenas), 1785-1969; and programas, 1819-1914. The site also allows for easy browsing (by date, type, or subject), or detailed searching.

After some browsing through the collection I found a good variety of subjects covered, including the catholic church, the armed forces, slavery, education, social life, foreign relation, and politicians, among others.

Currently only about 60 documents are searchable, but the library is applying for grants, in hopes to continue expanding this project.

Hace poco la biblioteca de la universidad Vanderbilt ha digitalizado y puesto a disposición parte de su material sobre Colombia, especializándose en la cultura e historia del siglo 19, bajo el titulo de The J. León Helguera Collection of Colombiana. Actualmente la colección está dividida en tres categorías principales: hojas sueltas, 1825-1972; folletos (incluyendo novenas), 1785-1969, y programas, 1819-1914. El sitio también permite la navegación fácil (por fecha, tipo, o tema), o por búsqueda detallada.

Después de alguna navegación a través de la colección encontré una buena variedad de temas tratados incluyendo la Iglesia Católica, las fuerzas armadas, la esclavitud, la educación, la vida social, la relación internacionales, y los políticos, entre otros.

Actualmente sólo hay alrededor de 60 documentos que pueden ser escaneados por palabra clave, pero la biblioteca esta buscando fondos con la esperanza de seguir ampliando este proyecto.

With some financial help from the National Endowment for the Humanities, digital-humanities professor Mary Flanagan is developing a game that will help add tags to some of Dartmouth College’s archival collections. Flanagan expects that students will be interested in the game which presents a player with an image for which they have to create “labels” for, and which will then be compared to the “labels” other players added (I presume in the hopes for increased accuracy). The game is expected to help reduce costs at the library.

The article in the Chronicle of Higher Education did not mention whether the collections involved in this project would only get student added labels or if these would be used alongside LCSH, nor did they mention any librarians, or more importantly, catalogers being involved with the development of this game. The project sounds a little like the PennTags system at UPenn, or the LOC Flickr account.

Flanagan eventually expects to release the game under an Open Source license so others may use it as well.

Con la ayuda financiera de la Fundación Nacional para las Humanidades, la profesora de humanidades digitales Mary Flanagan está desarrollando un juego que ayudará a añadir etiquetas a algunas de las colecciones de archivos de Dartmouth College. Flanagan supone que los estudiantes estarán interesados en el juego, el cual presenta al jugador una imagen para la cual tendrán que crear “etiquetas”, las cuales luego serán comparados con las “etiquetas” que otros jugadores han añadido (supongo que con la esperanza de aumentar su exactitud). Se espera que el juego ayude a reducir costos en la biblioteca.

El artículo del Chronicle of Higher Education no mencionó si las colecciones que participan en este proyecto sólo recibirán las etiquetas añadidas por estudiantes o si además utilizarán puntos de acceso de la Biblioteca del Congreso (LCSH), ni se menciona la participación de algún bibliotecarios, o más importante aún, la participación de catalogadores profesionales en el desarrollo del juego. El proyecto suena un poco como el sistema de PennTags en UPenn, o la cuenta de Flickr de la LOC.

Flanagan espera lanzar el juego bajo una licencia de código abierto para que otros también puedan usarlo.

Today I spent the morning at Trinity College. After a quick tour of the campus I headed towards the library where I wanted to see the Book of Kells, and the the Long Room.

The Book of Kells is another one of these really old bibles, this one dating back to ca. 800, and it is currently bound as multiple volumes. The books are illuminated manuscripts containing the four Gospels of the New Testament. What sets this manuscript apart, is both it’s age, as well as the detail of the illustrations included. It derives its names from the Kells Abby where it was housed for many centuries.

The room where the Book of Kells is located also contains a detailed exhibit explaining its history, how it was transcribed, how different pigments were created, and how the manuscript itself was made. There I found out that the Book of Kells was created for use on special occasions, and that is is full of textual errors.

After seeing the Book of Kells, I continued on to the Long Room, which is the main chamber of the original library. The room was built in 1850, originally with a flat ceiling, but it was remodeled in 1865 to include the vault ceiling that it is famous for today.

The Long Room houses over 200,000 of the library’s oldest books, and despite the hundreds of tourist that go through everyday, it is actually a working library.

Hoy pasé la mañana en Trinity College. Después de un recorrido rápido por el campus me dirigí hacia la biblioteca donde quería ver el Libro de Kells, y el Long Room.

El Libro de Kells es otra de estas bíblias muy antiguas, y se remonta a ca. 800; actualmente está encuadernada en varios volúmenes. Los libros son manuscritos iluminados que contienen los cuatro Evangelios del Nuevo Testamento. Lo que diferencia a este manuscrito, es su edad, así como el detalle de las ilustraciones incluidas. El manuscrito deriva su nombre Monasterio Kells donde se alojo por muchos siglos.

La sala en la que se encuentra el Libro de Kells también contiene una detallada exposición explicando su historia, cómo se transcribió, cómo fueron creados los distintos pigmentos, y la forma en que el manuscrito se hiso. Allí me enteré de que el Libro de Kells fue creado para uso en ocasiones especiales, y que es está llena de errores textuales.

Después de ver el Libro de Kells, seguí a el Long Room, que es la sala principal de la biblioteca original. La sala fue construida en 1850, originalmente con un techo plano, pero fue remodelada en 1865 para incluir el techo de bóveda por la cual es famosa hoy en día.

El Long Room contiene más de 200.000 de los libros más antiguos de la biblioteca, y a pesar de los cientos de turistas que pasan por la sala todos los días, esta continua siendo una biblioteca de trabajo.
