I arrived in Bogota last night and today I’m off to visit a few libraries, my first stop is the Biblioteca Nacional de Colombia. As Colombia’s national library, one of their main responsibilities is serving as the country’s legal deposit.

The collection includes monographs, journals, and a large music collection. The library’s music collection includes both written music and recordings, a number of which were recoded in the library, back when they had a complete recording studio on the top floor. You can access all the digitized music scores here. They have also created a musical map of the country which will guide you through the various musical genres.

The library has also created a digital library where it is uploading and making freely available much of its collection.

Right now there is also a very complete exhibit about “La Voragine” (The Vortex) by José Eustacio Rivera, on the first floor of the library.

On Thursday I attended the webinar titled “Opening up Library Systems through Web Services and SOA” which was co-hosted by WebJunction and ALA Tech Source, and moderated by Marshall Breeding. The session was very interested and presented three different cases of how Integrated Library Systems can be made more accessible, regardless of whether they run on Open Source software or not.

The hour and a half session consisted of three, half hour sessions in which three different presenters spoke about individual projects in which ILS have been made more open. The first presenter was Berit Nelson from Sirsidynix Corporation, who spoke about how Enterprise is using customized GUIs to allow staff to achieve more complex work projects without needing to be tech pros. She also mentioned that her team is working to ensure that Enterprise is anticipating the future RDA roll out by including appropriate tools that will update MARC to RDA standards.

Next came Bill Erickson from Evergreen & Equinox. Erickson works with Evergreen which is Open Source and he highlighted some of the technology aspects of his work. He talked about how Supercat code provides access to bib. records and holdings data in a variety of formats, including MARC, MODS, and HTML, among others.

Last, but not least was Tamar Sadeh from Ex Libris’ Open-Platform Program. Sadeh talked about how Meta Lib is improving federated searching, and mentioned the work that David Walker from Cal State is doing to create a intuitive and customizable search system. She also mentioned EL Commons CodeShare with provides visitors with code for various ILS platforms and functions. There is also the Elympics, a competition for the best Ex Libris based code extensions.

At the high of attendance, 467 people had logged in to listed to the presentation. Some asked questions, many listened and learned. And for those of you that weren’t able to listen to this webinar live, WedJunction archives these events on their website and makes them available for free (This webinar’s archive; full archives). Take a look at their calendar of events to see future session.

All in all it was a great presentation, and very informative. And I love that WebJunction is making these webinars available to everyone for free. What a marvelous way to contribute to the library community!

I was just reading an article from The Chronicle of Higher Education on library catalogs. The article starts off by mentioning a student who was having a hard time finding the material she wanted at her local university library. The discussion then continues by claiming that OPACs are loosing users because some people find them hard to use. They then continue to describe a few new developments in library OPACs, some commercial and some developed as open source.

The article does a basic job at explaining the fundamentals of a discussion that has been going on in the library for years, and one where the parties involved often cannot agree. But Marc Parry, the article’s author, seems to have forgotten to include a couple librarians in this discussion. Luckily many diligent librarians have found the article already and are happily “commenting” away on it.

One diligent commenter explained that OPACs do no function as Google, and in my opinion, they each serve different roles. mitt4jp wrote;

I found this article a little mis-leading. First of all, a library catalog is structured differently from a search engine. To find items about Thomas Jefferson, the correct way is to use “Thomas Jefferson” as a subject, not as keywords [anywhere] search.

Unfortunately, instead of teaching students how to conduct a precise search with few relevant results, faculty and librarians have found an easy way out — googlize everything.

I think one of the main issues in this discussion is who our users are. Someone who is looking for something good to read for leisure might benefit from a simpler interface, maybe one with just one search box, sort of like Google. But someone who needs a very specific item will likely need a sharper tool.

The other issue in this discussion is information literacy, meaning, do you have the skills you need to find the information you are looking for? I remember having to take a required course in library literacy for my undergrad. I remembered being rather intimidated with the process when I first walked into the session, but I also remember leaving in total amazement and fascination.

How about you come to your own conclusions? Harvard currently runs two OPACs, one catalog has many of the new features currently in vogue, and the sturdy old catalog that has been around for years. What are you using it for? And most importantly, are you finding what you are looking for?

Thank you to Marcel for pointing out this article.

Un comentarista explicó que los catálogos en linear no están diseñador para funcionar como Google, y en mi opinión, cada uno cumple una función diferente. mitt4jp escribió;

With some financial help from the National Endowment for the Humanities, digital-humanities professor Mary Flanagan is developing a game that will help add tags to some of Dartmouth College’s archival collections. Flanagan expects that students will be interested in the game which presents a player with an image for which they have to create “labels” for, and which will then be compared to the “labels” other players added (I presume in the hopes for increased accuracy). The game is expected to help reduce costs at the library.

The article in the Chronicle of Higher Education did not mention whether the collections involved in this project would only get student added labels or if these would be used alongside LCSH, nor did they mention any librarians, or more importantly, catalogers being involved with the development of this game. The project sounds a little like the PennTags system at UPenn, or the LOC Flickr account.

Flanagan eventually expects to release the game under an Open Source license so others may use it as well.

At the same lecture that I attended earlier this week I learned about the Cook Memorial Library in Tamworth, NH. This small public library has done away with their old static website and have replaced it with a WPopac. A WPopac is something created by Casey Bisson by tweaking WordPress to become an OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog). We got to see the insides of this library’s website and it looks exactly like the insides of this very blog you are reading.

The fascinating concept here is what can be created for free with the Opensource tools that are already available to us. Currently the Cook Memorial Library’s site provides you with just one search box that gives you relevant returns from all of their site, not just the OPAC. The fact that the search box cover the entire site means that if you search for local poet Marnie Cobbs, you will find out not only that the library carries her book titled “The Quiet Rage”, but also that she will be appearing at the library on May 8th. This set up also allows content on the web to be accessible through Google searches and the like.

Like any blog, the site allows collaboration by anyone who wants to contribute their two cents towards what is happening with the library. In relation to this, we heard the story of a man who is home-bound and therefore could not access the library, but now with this interactive site, he is able to participate by posting comments and starting discussions. In this sense the library is no longer just serving their immediate neighbors, but virtually anyone using the web.

You can learn more about this project and how it came about at maisonbisson. Bisson is also behind the Beyond Brown Paper project which is also based on WordPress.

11.14.07 – The Plymouth State University Lamson Library’s OPAC runs on WPopac, now known as Scriblio.
One Laptop per Child (OLPC) is a non-profit organization trying to address the lack of resources many Third World Countries struggle with and how these affect education and hinder technological development. Keeping in mind that many countries can only afford to spend $20 per child per year on education (compared to about $7,500 that the USA spends), OLPC tries to circumvent traditional approaches to the situation, and instead want to make available the tools that can allow children to explore and learn on their own. OLPC feel that efforts should continue to build school and train teachers in the poorest corners of the world, but simultaneously wants to try a more direct approach. The idea is to transform these children with personal laptops into teachers. Each child can explore the world on their machine, and will later be able to teacher elders and other children about what they have learned; in this way the entire community can benefit.

These laptops are designed for use by the world’s poorest children. They run on open source software, keeping in mind that while all children won’t become programmers, they should have the opportunity to continue growing without constrains by their equipment. The machine itself is designed to run on very low power, and some of the earliest models were powered through cranking, or with a foot-pedal. The display must also be sunlight-readable, since most children will be outdoors when working on their laptops. The machine itself is small, light and has a handle for easy carrying. It also has a monitor which rotates, allowing for others to participate.

This program was first designed to involved governments into buying laptops for children, and initial conversations involved proposals for Brazil, Argentina, Libya, Nigeria and Thailand. Recently Uruguay and Rwanda have also joined in. Currently the program continues to grow through donations by individuals, businesses and foundations.

If you want to learn more about the project visit their site and their wiki. You can find information on donating and participating here.

07.15.07 – Intel has just joined forces with OLPC, after creating competition for each other, in trying to offer low cost computers to children in the developing world. Currently there is no talk about changing processing chips, yet the idea is to develop a variety of low cost computers in the future that can function of a variety of platforms. Intel has been producing the Classmate for sale in developing countries at a cost of US $200.00. You can read more about this in an article by the BBC.

07.23.07 – After much anticipation and testing, OLPC is posed to start massive production, explaining that they finally have orders large enough to make the project viable. You can read more about this at an article by the BBC.
06.08.07 – It seems that everyone is in a rush to grab a piece of the computer market in the developing world. Today the BBC has an article about other major computer producers rushing towards this market, although they differ form the OLPC project in that these other companies are out just to make some money. Beijing based Levono has announced a low cost computer that can be plugged into the TV

10.29.30- Uruguay just became the first country to buy a large number of these computers to make available to children 6 – 12. They hope to make these laptops available to every children in the country by 2009. You can read more about this in an article from the BBC.
