Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990). The collection was recently purchased by Harvard and is currently available online for everyone to use.

In many cases these slides are the only record left of many of these murals, since they were quickly painted over by the regime. The murals document people’s anger, frustration and cries for help during the dictatorship.

While going through the collection you are likely to find many a familiar face, including Pablo Neruda, Gabriela Mistral, Víctor Jara, president Salvador Allende, and many other famous Chileans.

Last weekend I was attending the annual SALALM conference and heard about a lot of great projects relating to libraries and Latin American. The Cuban Rafter Phenomenon: A Unique Sea Exodus project is one of them. I heard about this project on a panel titled “Documenting in Times of Adversity, Survival and Hope.” María Rita Corticelli from the University of Exeter was the official presenter, but Holly Ackerman from Duke University was there as well, since this project was derived from her PhD program with the help of a few other scholars in the area.

The site focuses on the Cubans who left the island during the raft crisis of 1994, gathering interviews, photographs, videos. The site is divided into three main areas; Part I – What is the Rafter Crisis? ; Part II – Interdicted: The Rafters Go to Guantánamo ; Part III – Crisis in the Wider Caribbean – The Case of the Cayman Islands. Each section is further subdivided.

While going through the collection I notice that the topic is covered from a variety of viewpoints, including the rafters themselves, US Coast guard officials, Cuban children, and local politicians. And all aspects of the phenomenon are documented as well. You’ll find photographs of the rafts, several timelines of key events, an interactive map, and scanned documents.

Be aware that the site has some very obnoxious background noise.

The author comments that Peru has one of the worst cases of book pirating in all of Latin America, and that books from all over the world find their way into the industry. It seems that the people producing these books are so “skilled” they often ofter pirated version of titles that have not yet been published, or translated into Spanish! The author also comments that authors from the region both dream and dread being pirated; being pirated can be the equivalent to reaching the best sellers list.

Take a look at the full slide show here.

I was there with my mother and brother and we took one of the guided tours of the building. This tour starts off with a short movie including a number of brief interviews with some of the librarians who highlight many of the treasures in the collection. The tour focuses more of the history of the library, and explain a good amount of the art found on the walls of the building, but doesn’t say much about the library’s holdings.

As a very brief recap; the library was established in 1800 by an act of Congress and was originally housed inside the Capitol building. In August of 1814 British troops set fire to the building, destroying the entire collection. Shortly thereafter, former president Thomas Jefferson offered to sell his entire collection to rebuild the library. Congress decides to buy his collection and begin to redevelop the library. This original collection is on display, and still in use.

In case you haven’t heard, the USA doesn’t technically have a national library, instead the Library of Congress (LOC) fills this role. And while the library works for the needs of Congress, they work to collect on all things USA related and their collections include millions of items from around the world. As the country’s legal deposit the LOC holds of copy of every single book published in the USA, and any book published abroad that has been translated for the USA market.

From the millions of items the LOC holds they have some of the most amazing collections in the country. The American Folklife Center gathers audio recordings on pretty much every posible topic, they collect and produce reading material for the blind and physically handicapped, American Memory provides access to many of their holdings related to American history in a variety of formats, THOMAS was launched in 1995 to make available legislation information, they also participate in the World Digital Library.

The LOC also has a lot of free resources for librarians. You can browse through their OPAC, search through their Authorities files, look through their Print & Photographs, and listen through their Sound Inventory. There is also the handy Z39.50 which allows you to run simultaneous searches through their catalogs and several other libraries around the globe.

All in all it was a great visit, even through it including a minor scare due to a suspected gunman in the area. The library was briefly locked down, but 30 minutes later we were on our way again. Before leaving the library we did see the oldest known map where the American continent is named as such, and a draft to the Declaration of Independence!

If you are in DC stop by and visit the library, and if you are elsewhere take a look at their countless resources online. And keep in mind that on top of everything you’ll find at their website, they also have a Flickr account, and an account on Youtube.

OPAC

To commemorate this history and anticipating many new adventures to come, the Peace Corps has created a digital library which encourages current and past volunteers to submit photographs and stories of their experiences abroad. At the very minimum the collection wishes to gather photographs and stories from every country they have sent volunteers to, and every decade.

Over the years I’ve met a lot of Peace Corps volunteers, all with amazing stories; I’ve even the child of a former volunteer, so I’ll certainly be keeping an eye on this collection.

Before submitting material, please read the Peace Corps Digital Library Project Material Submission Authorization and Agreement.

The guidelines for the interviews are simple; you must live in one of the five boroughs, have never been mentioned in the NYT, be willing to be photographs, and be a good talker. The stories don’t aim at highlighting great accomplishments, but rather wish to share people’s passions, dreams, and struggles. The stories end up being a very personal look at a city that often feels overwhelming. It’s a look a people’s private lives, their interactions with a city that can seem mythical, or all too real.

I found stories of an Urban Taxidermist, a Blind Wine Taster, and an Ex-Bank Robber, among many others.

Here’s an article explaining a bit more of the process that takes place to find subject, conduct the interviews, and other aspects of the project.
