While the Republicans try to choose a candidate, many of the trends that have already been shared are about Republican politics. For instance, Candidate searches during the Fox News/Google debate.

Or this poll which is just depressing. According to online viewers of the Youtube/Fox News Channel if they had to cut one department from the federal government they would cut the Department of Education! Let’s hope these folks actually get an education and start reevaluating their priorities.

O esta encuesta que es simplemente deprimente. De acuerdo con los espectadores en línea del canal de Youtube / Fox News si tuviesen que eliminar un departamento del gobierno federal ¡estos eliminarían el Departamento de Educación! Depressing political trends aside, this is a very interesting project and I’m hoping for some encouraging trends on progressive candidates and ideas!

Here’s a great documentary about the Library of Congress which C-SPAN has made available for free! The documentary is an hour and a half and showcases the marvels of the collection, including many interesting stories about specific items, and the Jefferson building. If you have already visited the LOC this documentary will give you lots of additional information and closeup views of the art in the buildings and the treasures of the collection. If you haven’t been to the LOC yet, this documentary will certainly whet you appetite.

Hoy he pasado la mañana en la Biblioteca Legal del Congreso participando en su orientación a la investigación jurídica y el uso de la colección de la biblioteca legal. Me enteré de este evento a través de su blog “En Custodia Legis” y quede encantada de poder participar.

The session lasted 2.5 hours and we covered a lot of material. The session focused on federal legal research, and we worked with examples on the subject of home health care. The librarian offering the session did a great job by starting off with some background information about types of laws, and the difference between the types of resources, then showed us where to look for relevant information within their print and online collections.

La sesión duró 2,5 horas y cubrió una gran cantidad de material. La sesión se centró en la investigación judicial federal, y se trabajó con ejemplos sobre el tema de la atención de salud en el hogar. La bibliotecaria que ofreció la sesión hizo una labor magnifica. For the legislative branch the online resources we covered were Thomas.gov which offers legislative information, FDsys which is the government’s printing office, and USCODE whose name is self explanatory.

For the judicial branch we talked about the differences in courts, and how much of their decisions get published and become public. For district courts this number is only 5-10%. The courts of appeals publish between 45-55% through the Federal Reporter, and everything the Supreme Court decides becomes public. Curiously, Cornell University’s law school started publishing these Supreme Court decisions long before the government got around to it, so their online collection – LII - is more complete and goes back further than the resources on the Supreme Court’s website. We also looked at USCOURTS for all sorts of information on courts. This site also includes a biographical directory of all the federal judges.

Para el Poder Judicial hablamos acerca de las diferencias en los tribunales, y cómo parte de sus decisiones se publican y se hacen públicos. Para los tribunales de distrito este número es sólo el 5-10%. Los tribunales de apelaciones publicar entre 45-55% a través del reportero Federal, y todo lo que el Tribunal Supremo decide se hace público. At the end of the session we looked at a couple of resources outside the government. One of these was LLRX.com which offers a wide range of resources for legal professionals; best of all are their research guides, resources for librarians, and legal technology. The other site we looked at was the Law Librarians Society of Washington DC (LLSDC) which can help make local connections.

Uno de ellos fue LLRX.com que ofrece una amplia gama de recursos para profesionales del derecho, lo mejor de todo son sus guías de investigación, recursos para bibliotecarios, y tecnología jurídica. If all of these resources look a bit advance, and you need to start at the beginning take a look at Kids in the House which will give you some of the basic terminology, and will explain how bills are passed. The site offers resources divided by school level.

The Satellite Sentinel Project hopes to deter the resumption of war between North and South Sudan. The project provides documentation with the hope that exposing the country’s situation will prevent further violence and human right abuse. The idea behind the project is to engage the rest of the world in Sudan’s situation, and to provide evidence so that no one will be able to plead ignorance to the country’s situation.

El proyecto Satellite Sentinel espera prevenir la reanudación de la guerra entre el norte y el sur de Sudán. El proyecto proporciona documentación con la esperanza de que la denuncia de la situación del país evite más violencia y el abuso de los derechos humanos. La idea detrás del proyecto es involucrar al resto del mundo en la situación de Sudán, y aportar pruebas para que nadie podrá alegar ignorancia sobre la situación del país.

The project works by using Google’s Map Maker technology in cooperation with commercial satellites to capture images of possible threats to civilians, track displaced communities, detect explosions, and other indicators of violence.

El proyecto funciona mediante el uso de la tecnología de Google Map Maker en cooperación con satélites comerciales para captar imágenes de posibles amenazas a civiles, seguir a las comunidades desplazadas, detectar explosiones, y otros indicadores de la violencia.

This Sunday, January 9th, 2011, Sudan will be voting on a referendum to decide on a secession referendum, and the Satellite Sentinel Projects will be watching closely to document the process. People working on this project will pair up satellite imagery with reports from people on the ground to contextually the images. Beyond this weekend, the project aims to be engaged in Sudan for the long run, and continue monitoring the situation.

Este Domingo, 09 de enero 2011, Sudán votara en un referéndum de secesión, y el proyectos de satélites Sentinel estará observando de cerca para documentar el proceso. Las personas que trabajan en este proyecto asociará las imágenes de los satélite con los informes de la gente reportando desde Sudan para darle contexto las imágenes. Más allá de este fin de semana, el proyecto aspira a seguir involucrado en Sudán a largo plazo, y así seguir de cerca la situación.

This project is a collaboration between Not On Our Watch, Google, the Enough Project, the United Nations UNITAR Operational Satellite Applications Programme (UNOSAT), the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative, and Trellon, LLC.

The Enough Project contributes field reports, provides policy analysis, and, together with Not On Our Watch, puts pressure on policymakers by urging the public to act.

UNOSAT recoge y análisis las imágenes y colabora con Google yTrellon para diseñar la plataforma web para que el público pueda acceder fácilmente las imágenes e información. La Iniciativa Humanitaria Harvard proporciona la investigación de todo el sistema y lleva la recopilación de información, el análisis de la situación sobre derechos humanos, y la corroboración de los informes para así contextualiza las imágenes de satélite. El proyecto Enough contribuye informes de campo, proporciona el análisis político, y, junto con Not On Our Watch, ejerce presión sobre los políticos, instando al público a actuar.

Esta tarde asistí a un seminario web de ALA sobre E-Gobierno. La sesión ofreció información sobre algunos sitios buenos donde podemos encontrar información gubernamental (a nivel local, estatal y federal), algo de información sobre los usuarios de estos recursos, y algunas estadísticas sobre el tema.

The first panelist was Nancy Fedrericks, e-government librarian, Pasco County Public Library (Florida). Fedrericks shared some resources found at her local library, including a section on their website, a blog, and some online tools to help patrons use these resources. She talked about the use these resources get at her library, and mentioned that it is best to be very careful about privacy issues when helping patrons with these resources, and when at all possible ask them to get help from a friend or family member, instead of the librarian.

El primera presentadora fue Nancy Fedrericks, bibliotecaria de e-gobierno en la Biblioteca Pública del Condado de Pasco (Florida). Fedrericks compartio algunos recursos que se encuentran en su biblioteca local, incluyendo una sección en su página web, un blog, y algunas herramientas en línea para ayudar a los usuarios a utilizar estos recursos. También habló sobre el uso que estos recursos recibe en su biblioteca y mencionó que lo mejor es tener mucho cuidado en cuando a asuntos de privacidad al ayudar a los usuarios con estos recursos, y en cuanto sea posible pedirles que busquen ayuda de un amigo o familiar, en lugar del bibliotecario.

She also shared the website LawHelp.org which offers help finding local legal help and information. The site offers resources for every state. Fredericks also has older presentations on this topic on Webjunction. Here are a few of her presentations; E-Government: Tips, Tools, and Best Practices, Re-tooling Frontline Staff with E-government Resources, and Community Accessed E-Government Websites.

También compartió en enlace LawHelp.org sitio web que ofrece ayuda para encontrar assistencia legal e información jurídica. El sitio ofrece recursos para cada estado de EE.UU. The next presenter was Bill Sudduth, Head, Government Information and Microforms, Newspapers and Maps, University of South Carolina. Sudduth shared a number of website that are great examples of how to best offer e-gov resources. His collection of site included e-gov at every level. At the federal level there is USA.gov, and GPO Access, which offered free electronic access to documents produced by the Federal Government. Virginia.gov was a good example of a state site, and on the local level, Boston’s website took the top prize!

El siguiente ponente fue Bill Sudduth, Jefe de Información Gubernamental, Microformas, Prensa y Mapas de la Universidad de Carolina del Sur. Sudduth compartió una serie de sitio web que son excelentes ejemplos de la mejor manera de ofrecer recursos de e-gov. Su colección de sitio incluye e-gobierno a todos los niveles. A nivel federal esta USA.gov, y GPO Access, que ofrece acceso electrónico gratuito a los documentos Gobierno Federal (EE.UU). Virginia.gov es un buen ejemplo de un sitio del estado, ¡y a nivel local el sitio web de Boston se gano el primer premio!

The third and last presenter was John Bertot, Director, Center for Library & Information Innovation, University of Maryland. Bertot talked about the intersection of public libraries and E-government. He began by sharing a map of all the public libraries in the USA commenting that they really cover the entire nation, and that now that governments at every level are cutting resources, the public library has often had to fill this gap.

El tercer y último presentador fue John Bertot, Director del Centro de Innovación de Bibliotecas e Información de la Universidad de Maryland. Bertot habló sobre la intersección de las bibliotecas públicas y el gobierno electrónico. Bertot share some information from the Center for Library & Information Innovation (CLII) in the College of Information Studies at the University of Maryland illustrating this relationship between libraries and e-gov. This site includes a lot of statistical information on the subject, and these handy fliers (this is the e-gov one), that will give you a great starting point if you need to advocate for these services at your library.

Bertot compartió información del Centro de Innovación de Bibliotecas e Información (CLII) en el Colegio de Estudios de la Información en la Universidad de Maryland que ilustra esta relación entre las bibliotecas y el e-gov. Este sitio incluye una gran cantidad de información estadística sobre el tema y estos útiles folletos (este es el de e-gov) que le dará un gran punto de partida si necesita abogar por estos servicios en su biblioteca.

At the end Bertot talked a little about the increasing need for librarians to be able to fully understand how to work with e-gov material. Because of this need the University of Maryland has established a program for E-Government Librarianship!

Al final Bertot habló un poco acerca de que cada vez es mayor la necesidad de que como bibliotecarios podamos trabajar de manera competente con este material. Debido a esta necesidad la Universidad de Maryland ha establecido un programa de Bibliotecologia para E-Gobierno!

The whole program was good, and best of all it was free! I’m already looking forward to more interesting webinars!

Here are parts one, two, and three of a news report highlighting the impressive change the city of Medellín, Colombia has had in the last decade or so, and how Juárez, Mexico is trying to model itself after it.

Aquí están capítulos uno, dos y tres de un informe de noticias destacado el impresionante cambio que la ciudad de Medellín, Colombia ha tenido en la última década y como Juárez, México está tratando de modelar estos cambios.

During the 90s Medellín has known the world over for its violence, but today it’s an entirely different place, and much of this new-found peace and prosperity can be linked to the massive investment the city made in public libraries, and other social programs. Medellín created a system of public libraries and strategically located them in some of the poorest, and most violent neighborhoods. One of these new libraries, the Parque Biblioteca León de Greiff, lives in a building which used to he a jail. What beautiful symbolism, from prison to place of learning. In each neighborhood these libraries have become places to learn, build community, and socialize.

Durante los años 90 Medellín era famosa alrededor del mundo mundo por su violencia, pero hoy es un lugar totalmente diferente y gran parte de esta nueva paz y prosperidad son resultados directos de la gran inversión que la ciudad hizo en bibliotecas públicas y otros programas sociales. Medellín creó un sistema de bibliotecas públicas ubicadas estratégicamente en algunos de los barrios más pobres y violentos. Una de estas nuevas bibliotecas es el Parque Biblioteca León de Greiff, ubicada en un edificio que antes que antes era cárcel. Que hermoso simbolismo, de cárcel a lugar de conocimiento. En cada barrio de estas bibliotecas se han convertido en lugares para aprender, construir comunidad, y socializar.

The Huffington Post has a nice collection of 15 famous movies (including clips) based on banned books. The collection has put together in collaboration with the ALA and Banned Books Week. It’s always surprising to see what books get people worked up… or that people are threatened by books to begin with…

El Huffington Post tiene una buena colección de 15 películas famosas (incluyendo cortos) basadas en libros que han sido prohibidos. La colección se organizo con la colaboración de la ALA y la Semana de Libros Prohibidos. In many cases these slides are the only record left of many of these murals, since they were quickly painted over by the regime. The murals document people’s anger, frustration and cries for help during the dictatorship.

While going through the collection you are likely to find many a familiar face, including Pablo Neruda, Gabriela Mistral, Víctor Jara, president Salvador Allende, and many other famous Chileans.

En ese mismo panel de SALALM titulado “La documentación en tiempos de adversidad, supervivencia y esperanza” mi amiga Lynn Shirey presentó sobre una colección de diapositivas por el fotógrafo Andrés Romero Spethman, recién adquiridas documentando los Murales de Protesta Chilenos durante la dictadura del general Augusto Pinochet (1973 – 1990). La colección fue adquirida recientemente por Harvard y actualmente está disponible en línea para uso de todos.

En muchos casos estas diapositivas son el único registro que queda de estos murales ya que fueron borrados con rapidez por el régimen. Los murales documentan la indignación del pueblo, su frustración y sus gritos de socorro durante la dictadura.

Mientras mira la colección seguro encontrara más de una cara conocida, incluyendo a Pablo Neruda, Gabriela Mistral, Víctor Jara, el presidente Salvador Allende, y muchos otros chilenos famosos.

The site focuses on the Cubans who left the island during the raft crisis of 1994, gathering interviews, photographs, videos. The site is divided into three main areas; Part I – What is the Rafter Crisis? ; Part II – Interdicted: The Rafters Go to Guantánamo ; Part III – Crisis in the Wider Caribbean – The Case of the Cayman Islands. Each section is further subdivided.

While going through the collection I notice that the topic is covered from a variety of viewpoints, including the rafters themselves, US Coast guard officials, Cuban children, and local politicians. And all aspects of the phenomenon are documented as well. You’ll find photographs of the rafts, several timelines of key events, an interactive map, and scanned documents.

Be aware that the site has some very obnoxious background noise.

El fin de semana pasado asistía a la conferencia anual de SALALM y me entere de una cantidad de proyectos super interesantes relacionados con bibliotecas y América Latina. The Cuban Rafter Phenomenon: A Unique Sea Exodus (El fenómeno del balsero cubano: una experiencia única de éxodo) es uno de ellos. Me enteré de este proyecto en un panel titulado “La documentación en tiempos de adversidad, supervivencia y esperanza.” María Rita Corticelli de la Universidad de Exeter fue el presentador oficial, pero Holly Ackerman de la Universidad Duke estaba allí también, ya que este proyecto se deriva de su programa de doctorado con la ayuda de algunos otros expertos en el campo.

El sitio se centra en los cubanos que abandonaron la isla durante la crisis balsa de 1994, y recopila entrevistas, fotografías, y videos. El sitio se divide en tres áreas principales: Parte I – ¿Cuál es la Crisis de los Balseros? ; Parte II – Prohibido: Los balseros van a Guantánamo; Parte III – Crisis en el Caribe – El Caso de las Islas Caimán. Cada sección se subdivide.

Al analizar la colección me doy cuenta de que el tema se trata de una variedad de puntos de vista, incluyendo los balseros, funcionarios de la Guardia Costera de EEUU, niños cubanos y varios políticos. Todos los aspectos del fenómeno se documentan también. Usted encontrará fotografías de las balsas, líneas de tiempo de varios de los eventos clave, un mapa interactivo y documentos escaneados.
