Tomorrow a group of librarians and library enthusiast from around the world will try to make the hashtag #biblioteca one of the Trending Topics on Twitter. The event will take place August 10, 2010 and will last an hour (10-11am EST).

This experiment was conducted exactly a year ago, and they almost achieve their goal, so hopefully this time they will make it.

08\10\2010 – Mission accomplished, #biblioteca was among the top ten Trending topics on Twitter today!

Mañana un grupo de bibliotecarios y un entusiasta de las bibliotecas alrededor del mundo intentaran hacer que el hashtag #biblioteca sea uno de los “trending topics” (temas del momento) en Twitter. El evento se llevará a cabo el 10 de agosto 2010 y tendrá una duración de una hora (10-11am hora del este- EEUU).

Este experimento se llevó a cabo hace exactamente un año, y casi lograr su objetivo, así que espero que esta vez lo logren.

I just learned about This Week in Libraries (twil) an online TV series about libraries all over the world! (Does it get any better than this?!) Twil is hosted by Erik Boekestejin and Jaap van de Geer, both from the DOK Library Concept Center in Delft, Netherlands.

With each episode the two hosts interview  librarians, or other folks who are involved with the library world and related technological innovations. Some of the interviews right now include a priest from the Vatican who does podcasts, freelance journalists, and library school professors, among others. The site is still quite new, only 8 shows so far, but I think these guys are on to something great. Some of the episodes are as long as an hour, others run about 30 minutes, all broadcasts are in English.

Me acabo de enterar sobre el programa This Week in Libraries (Esta semana en las bibliotecas) (twil), una serie de televisión en línea sobre las bibliotecas del mundo! (¿Hay algo mejor que esto?) Twil fue creada por Erik Boekestejin y Jaap van de Geer, ambos de la biblioteca DOK de Delft, Holanda.

Con cada capitulo los dos anfitriones entrevistan bibliotecarios, u otras personas que están involucrados con el mundo de las bibliotecas y relacionados con tecnologías de innovación. Algunas de las entrevistas en este momento incluyen un sacerdote del Vaticano que hace podcasts, periodistas independientes, y profesores de bibliotecologia, entre otros. El sitio todavía esta bastante nuevo, por ahora sólo llevan 8 capítulos, pero creo que estos chicos tienen un proyecto con mucho futuro. Algunos de los episodios duran como una hora, otros solo como 30 minutos, todas las transmisiones son en inglés.

The ALA (American Library Association) just established Choose Privacy Week (May 2 -8), which is part of Privacy Revolution. This new event aims at creating awareness of the digital environment we live in and how to best manage it. Before many of us adopted all the digital tools that help facilitate our work, daily chores, and keep us in touch with friends and family, guarding our privacy was pretty easy, all we had to do was close the curtains, and seal mail. Today many of us aren’t entire sure what information about us is out in the public sphere, nor how it got there.

I’m really glad ALA and the library community at large are taking on this issue since it seems that every day there is a new story of how our private information is being misused or misappropriated. One of the biggest examples right now is Facebook and the fact that every update seems to provide less privacy. And only last week Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s CEO let us know that he doesn’t believe in privacy, and he’s at the helm of the one tool where millions of people around the globe are sharing much of their lives.

All of us really should learn how to best protect our privacy in an age where we both need some visibility, but shouldn’t be over exposed. Although I do think there are two major issues here to be discussed. There is the fact that a lot of people share very private moments through online venues which aren’t always committed to protecting our privacy, but the second part of this is the fact that new sites are turning up every day which promise to provide our full names, birthdays, addresses, credit scores and who knows what other sensitive information for the “low price of …”. The first issues I think we can all consciously decide to manage, but the second scenarios is something that needs legal action in order to protect regular citizens. We should all be protected from identify theft, online scams, and the like, and as a woman, I REALLY do not like the fact that for a small amount of money a stranger can find out what my phone number is or worst yet, where I live.

As a librarian I believe that people have a right to privacy and that libraries should be safe havens for research, personal development, and entertainment of all kinds. And as librarians in Connecticut who challenged the Patriot Act reminded all of us a few years ago, libraries should be committed to this stance even when that means challenging federal officials.

I think a well managed online presence can be a great professional asset, but just as easily, a poor online presence can certainly come and bite us in the butt. This issue is getting enough attention that a number of writers are providing us with guidelines on how to best manage our online privacy. All Facebook is an entire blog on how to best manage your Facebook account, including a good post on privacy setting. The Electronic Frontier Foundation Technology Director described the Top 12 Ways To Protect Your Online Privacy. There are plenty other articles if you run a few online searches. Another simple things to do is have a friend help you out with this. Have a friend run a few searches on you and then report back. Temporarily remove a friend from some of your online account and ask them to report back on what information they can still access on your accounts. And remember to do this regularly. Just be cause your information isn’t available today doesn’t mean it won’t be tomorrow.

La ALA (Asociación Americana de Bibliotecas) acaba de establecer la Semana de Elegir la Privacidad (Mayo 2 -8) que es parte de la Revolución de la Privacidad. Este nuevo evento tiene como objetivo crear conciencia sobre el entorno digital en que vivimos y la mejor manera de manejarlo. Antes de que muchos de nosotros adoptáramos todas las herramientas digitales que ayudan a facilitar nuestro trabajo, nuestros deberes diarios, y nos mantienen en contacto con amigos y familiares, proteger nuestra privacidad era bastante fácil, solo bastaba con cerrar las cortinas y sellar nuestro correo. Hoy en día muchos de nosotros no podemos estar seguros de toda nuestra información que esta en la esfera pública, ni cómo llegó allí.

Me alegra que la ALA y la comunidad bibliotecaria en general está abordando este tema ya que parece que cada día hay una nueva historia de cómo nuestra información privada se use de manera abusiva o se apropiación indebidamente. Uno de los mayores ejemplos en este momento es Facebook y el hecho de que cada actualización parece ofrecer menos privacidad. Y sólo la semana pasada, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO de Facebook nos dejo saber que él no cree en la privacidad, cosa seria siendo que él está al frente de la herramienta donde millones de personas en todo el mundo comparten gran parte de sus vidas.

Todos nosotros realmente deberíamos aprender como mejor proteger nuestra privacidad en una época en la que al mismo tiempo necesitamos un poco de visibilidad, pero no se debemos exponernos demasiado. Aunque creo que hay dos temas principales para discutir aquí. Esta el hecho de que mucha gente comparte momentos muy privados a través de lugares en línea que no siempre se compromete a proteger nuestra privacidad, pero la segunda parte de esto es el hecho de que hay cantidad de sitios nuevos que están apareciendo todos los días y que prometen proporcionar nuestros nombre completo, fecha de nacimiento, dirección, cuentas de crédito y quién sabe qué otro tipo de información sensible, todo por el “bajo precio de…” El primer caso creo que lo podemos manejar conscientemente, pero el segundo caso es algo que necesita una acción legal con el fin de proteger a todos los ciudadanos. Todos debemos ser protegidos contra el robo de identidad, fraudes en línea, y demás, y como mujer realmente no me gusta ni cinco el hecho de que por una pequeña cantidad de dinero un extraño puede saber cuál es mi número de teléfono, o peor aún, donde yo vivo.

Como bibliotecaria creo que la gente tiene derecho a la privacidad ya que las bibliotecas deben ser refugios seguros para la investigación, el desarrollo personal y el entretenimiento de todo tipo. Y como bibliotecarios en Connecticut que se enfrentaron contra el Patriot Act nos recordaron a todos hace algunos años, las bibliotecas deben estar comprometidos con esta hecho, incluso cuando eso significa un retar a funcionarios federales.

Creo que una presencia en presencia en línea bien manejada puede ser de gran beneficio profesional, pero de igual manera, una presencia en línea mala nos puede dar muchos dolores de cabeza. Este problema esta empezando a atraer la atención de un número de escritores quienes nos están proporciona directrices sobre cómo administrar mejor nuestra privacidad en línea. All Facebook es un blog dedicado a cómo mejor administrar nuestra cuenta de Facebook, incluyendo un buen articulo sobre la configuración de privacidad de nuestra cuenta. El director de la Electronic Frontier Foundation describió las 12 mejores maneras de proteger nuestra privacidad en línea. Con solo hacer un par de búsquedas en internet, seguro podrá encontrar mas artículos sobre el tema. Otra cosas simples por hacer es pedirle a un que le ayude con esto. Pídale a un amigo que haga un par de búsquedas con su nombre y que luego le informe sobre lo que encontró. Temporalmente elimine a un amigo de algunas de su cuenta en línea y pedales que le informen sobre qué información esta disponible en sus cuentas. Y recuerde que es buena idea hacer estos chequeos con regularidad. No encontrar algo hoy, no quiere decir que mañana sera lo mismo.

This Book Is Overdue!: How Librarians and Cybrarians Can Save Us All by Marilyn Johnson

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I picked up a galley of this book while attending ALA Midwinter, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Marilyn Johnson became interested in librarians while researching her previous book on obituaries, and running into a few fascinating librarians death notices. A few quirky librarians may have initially caught her attention, but she is clearly enamored with the field, the staff, and the whole concept of sharing information for free.

Johnson’s book focuses on public libraries in the USA North East, but the cases she discusses, and examples she gives can be applied to the whole country, and much of it can extend to many other types of libraries. Through the book she discusses the initial pains of migrating information to emerging technologies, working hard to reach out to new users, coming up with creative programing, and the painful adjustments many librarians have had to deal with during this economic downturn.

In the book you will read about the Connecticut librarians who challenged the Patriot Act, an academic librarian who has an amazing zine collection, librarians who have migrated to Second Life, and the fascinating networks they have formed. You’ll also read about an archivist who boxes and how this very detail made him the perfect candidate to save a large boxing collection in Miami. Johnson also talked to the “dog” librarians, and several librarians at NYPL.

The chapter on what is happening at NYPL really stuck with me, and it’s a situation that is being replicated all over. Basically the financial crisis has forced them to reevaluate how the library runs, who their main users are, and how they may best serve them with reduced funds. Here Johnson interviews librarians working on new technologies, another one who loves helping authors do research, a couple more that have begun courting local artists and showing them what treasures the libraries has for them. She also spoke to a few librarians who’s departments have been eliminated and job descriptions have been significantly altered. Many of these librarians express concern about the patrons they had served, and the collections they have come to know so well, while questioning if their expertise will really be of most service in their new positions.

Throughout the book Johnson also shares her experiences learning about the field. She comments on the librarian who taught her now to store screen shots, instead of trying to book mark everything she liked on the web. She also talked about a course she took on archival practices, and tells us about her learning curve with new tools in the field.

The book is a very quick, thoroughly enjoyable read, and Johnson’s praise for librarians, archivists, and so called “cybrarians” is music to this librarian’s ears!

Recogí una copia sin corregir de este libro mientras asistía a ALA Midwinter, y lo disfruté muchísimo. Marilyn Johnson inicialmente se interesa en el mundo de las bibliotecas mientras hacia investigación para su libro anterior sobre los obituarios. Ahí se tropezó con varios anuncios fascinantes basados en la vida de bibliotecarios. La autora podrá haber empezado este proyecto después de interesarse por ciertos bibliotecarios particulares, pero pero esta claro que está fascinada con el mundo de las bibliotecas, su personal, y todo el concepto de compartir información de forma gratuita.

El libro de Johnson se centra en las bibliotecas públicas en el noreste de EE.UU. pero los casos que discute y los ejemplos que da se puede aplicar a todo el país, y muchos pueden extenderse a muchos otros tipos de bibliotecas. A través del libro Johnson nos cuenta de los dolores iniciales de la migración de información a nuevas tecnologías, el arduo trabajando para llegar a nuevos usuarios, como organizar programación creativa, y los dolorosos ajustes que muchos bibliotecarios han tenido que vivir durante esta recesión económica.

En el libro usted leerá acerca de los bibliotecarios de Connecticut que impugnaron el Patriot Act, un bibliotecario académico que tiene una colección asombrosa de mini revistas (zines), los bibliotecarios que han emigrado a Second Life, y las redes profesionales tan fascinantes que se hayan formado. También leerá acerca de un archivero quien boxea y cómo este detalle lo convirtió en el candidato perfecto para guardar una gran colección sobre el boxeo en Miami. Johnson también habló con la bibliotecarios para “perros” bibliotecarios y varios bibliotecarios en la biblioteca publica de Nueva York (NYPL).

El capítulo sobre lo que está sucediendo en NYPL fue el que mas me impacto, y es una situación que se repite en todas partes. Básicamente, la crisis financiera ha obligado a revaluar cómo funciona la biblioteca, quienes son sus principales usuarios, y cómo se puede prestar mejores servicios con fondos reducidos. Aquí Johnson entrevista bibliotecarios que trabajan con tecnologías emergentes, otro bibliotecaria que le encanta ayudar a los autores haciendo investigación para sus libros, un par de jóvenes que han comenzado a cortejar a artistas locales y les muestra los tesoros que bibliotecas tiene para ellos. También entrevisto a varios bibliotecarios de departamentos que han sido eliminados y a quienes les han cambiado sus obligaciones laborales. Muchos de estos bibliotecarios expresan preocupación por sus usuarios, y las colecciones que han llegado a conocer tan bien, mientras se cuestiona si su experiencia laboral será realmente aprovechada al máximo en sus nuevos trabajos.

A lo largo del libro de Johnson también comparte sus experiencias de aprendizaje sobre el campo. Ella comenta sobre la bibliotecaria que le enseñó como capturar y almacenar imágenes de la web, en lugar de tratar de reservar la marca todas las paginas que le gustaba. También habló de un curso que tomó en las prácticas de archivo, y nos habla de su curva de aprendizaje con las nuevas herramientas en el campo.

El libro se puede leer muy rápido, es entretenido y divertido de leer, ¡y el elogio de Johnson para los bibliotecarios, archiveros, y los llamados “cybrarians” es música para los oídos de esta bibliotecaria!

Travesía is a website put together by Spain’s Ministry of Culture’s General Subcommittee on the Coordination of Libraries. Basically the sites aims at promoting collaboration among Spanish librarians, and offers them a space to work together.

Information on the site is divided into three main categories; 1) Documentation that will aid collaboration among Spanish Librarians; 2) Publications by the Spain’s Ministry of Culture’s General Subcommittee on the Coordination of Libraries; and 3) Offers access to other relevant publications.

The site functions in all the official languages used in Spanish, plus English.

Travesía es un sitio web elaborado por la Subdirección General de Coordinación Bibliotecaria del Ministerio de Cultura de España. Básicamente el sitios tiene como objetivo promover la colaboración entre bibliotecarios en españa y les ofrece un espacio para trabajar juntos.

Información en el sitio se divide en tres categorías principales: 1) Documentación que ayudará a la colaboración entre los bibliotecarios españoles, 2) Publicaciones de la Subdirección General de Coordinación Bibliotecaria del Ministerio de Cultura de España, y 3) Ofrece acceso a otras publicaciones pertinentes.

El sitio funciona en todos los idiomas oficiales que se usan en españa, y en inglés.

This morning, bright and early, I attended an ALA Midwinter Conference session hosted by OCLC titled “Redesigning Technical Services Workflows.” The session was composed of three presenters, two of which shared their experiences on how their technical services departments are adapting to decreased budgets and new technology trends. The third presenter, Ruth Fischer (R2 Consulting), discussed a report she helped create which discussed the creation and use of bibliographic records in North America.

The main point of this presentation is that libraries all across North America are duplicating each others work when we could be working together to maximize the creation of bib. records for benefit of us all. Her presentation included some shocking numbers. The report concluded that there are about 34,000 original catalogers in North America, and that if each one cataloged only one item a day, every work day, that would produce 6 million new records a year! These numbered followed her pointing out that most libraries have growing backlogs! It seems most libraries are instructing the catalogers to bring in records from institutions like OCLC, alter them in the local catalog, and then not re-share the new record. This process is being repeated over and over in libraries all over the region.

The presentation went on to address the fact that many non-library users are starting to gather much of the information gathers in these MARC records and either using it for other purposes, or reselling it! And in a systems where the Library of Congress (LOC) ends up creating many of these records and them making them available to the library community at large, the LOC is basically subsidizing everyone’s cataloging, libraries, and non-libraries alike.

I’m not sure how we are going to get all, or even most libraries to start working more collaboratively, but I do know that we need to get working on this, instead of spending, who knows how many more years duplicating each others work.

Esta mañana, muy temprano, asistí a una sesión de conferencia del ALA Midwinter organizada por OCLC titulada “Rediseño de Servicios Técnicos y flujos de trabajo.” La sesión se compuso de tres presentadores, dos de los cuales compartieron sus experiencias sobre la forma en que sus departamentos de servicios técnicos se están adaptando a la disminución de presupuestos y las tendencias de nuevas tecnologías. La tercera presentadora, Ruth Fischer (R2 Consulting) examinó un informe que ayudó a crear que discutía la creación y utilización de registros bibliográficos en Norte América.

El punto principal de esta presentación es que las bibliotecas en toda Norte América están duplicando el trabajo de otros cuando podrían estar trabajando juntos para maximizar la creación de registros bibliográficos para beneficio de todos. Su presentación incluyó algunos números impactantes. El informe concluye que hay cerca de 34.000 catalogadores profesionales en Norte América y que si cada uno de ellos catalogara sólo un libro al día, cada día de trabajo, ¡se crearían 6 millones de registros nuevos al año! Fischer menciono estos números justo después de señalar que la mayoría de las bibliotecas tienen acumulación de material que no hay podido catalogar. Al parecer la mayoría de las bibliotecas están instruyendo a los catalogadores a que migren registros encontrados en instituciones como la OCLC, modificarlos en el catálogo local, y luego no volver a compartir el nuevo registro. Este proceso se repite una y otra vez en las bibliotecas de toda la región.

Otro punto de la presentación fue ilustrar el hecho de que hay una cantidad de usuarios, tanto bibliotecas, como otros, que están comenzando a recopilar toda la información que se reúne en estos registros MARC y los están utilizando para otros fines, ¡o los revenden! En un sistema donde la Biblioteca del Congreso (LOC) produce muchos de estos registros y los ponen a disposición de la comunidad bibliotecaria en general, la LOC básicamente esta subvencionando la catalogación de todo el mundo, las bibliotecas y otras instituciones por igual.

No estoy segura de cómo vamos a conseguir que todas, o incluso la mayoría de las bibliotecas empiecen a trabajar en colaboración pero sé que tenemos que hacer algo al respecto. No tiene sentido alguno que pasemos quien saben cuantos años más duplicando nuestro trabajo.

Study of the North American MARC marketplace originally appeared on Bilingual Librarian on January 16, 2010.

It’s been almost fifty years since the Peace Corps first started sending volunteers around the world to help in a variety of projects. To commemorate this history and anticipating many new adventures to come, the Peace Corps has created a digital library which encourages current and past volunteers to submit photographs and stories of their experiences abroad. At the very minimum the collection wishes to gather photographs and stories from every country they have sent volunteers to, and every decade.

Over the years I’ve met a lot of Peace Corps volunteers, all with amazing stories; I’ve even the child of a former volunteer, so  I’ll certainly be keeping an eye on this collection.

A Peace Corps Gringo in Colombia

Ya van casi cincuenta años desde que el Cuerpo de Paz comenzó a enviar voluntarios por todo el mundo para ayudar con una variedad de proyectos. Para conmemorar esta historia y proveyendo que habrán muchas aventuras por venir, el Cuerpo de Paz ha creado una biblioteca digital que alienta voluntarios actuales y pasados a presentar fotografías y relatos de sus experiencias en el extranjero. Como mínimo la colección desea recoger fotografías e historias de todos los países donde han enviado voluntarios, y de cada década.

A través de los años he conocido muchos voluntarios del Cuerpo de Paz, todos con increíbles historias, incluso soy hija de un ex-voluntario; sin duda estaré mirando el desarrollo de esta colección.

RedEsColombia is an online platform that offers a space where Colombians around the world, and everyone one else interested in the country can interact, and share ideas. Ultimately the network hopes that these interactions will help bring about new ideas, and development for the country.

You do have to register to get the full benefit of the site. But once you are in you will find dozens of smaller networks divided my topic. There are several regional networks, with Colombian in Canada being quite visible. There are also networks based on common interests, such as education, and business.

The site is a little cumbersome to navigate, but it seems like a good resource for Colombians abroad wanting to keep in touch, and network with other compatriots in the area. It also offers a space for business development both in Colombia as well as abroad.

If you just want to take a look at the types of networks available click on the links on the left hand margin, not the ones of the top because those will ask you to register.

RedEsColombia es una plataforma en línea que ofrece un espacio donde los colombianos alrededor del mundo, y todos los demás interesados en el país pueden interactuar y compartir ideas. En definitiva, la red espera que estas interacciones ayuden a traer nuevas ideas, y el desarrollo para el país.

ColombiaYa.com is a search engine for Colombians, by Colombians. The site will provide access to all things Colombian, starting with a crash course of the country’s government and history. You will also find news, culture, sports, government, entertainment, tourism, and so much more. The site also provides contact information for all the Colombian embassies around the world; useful information and documentation for Colombian living abroad; and direct links to all of the Colombian government’s websites, including the presidency, Colciencias, ICETEX, and ministry for education, among many others. The site allows for open discussion about Colombia, allowing users to share articles on any Colombian topic, and providing a space for chat. You’ll also find links to all the mayor radio stations. There is a calendar highlighting all the mayor holidays, including the many, many saints we honor. If you want to advertise an event that will interest the Colombian community, there is a page dedicated to this, although it is currently empty.
