This is one of the cutest things I’ve ever seen and a great idea as well! The Little Free Library is a project to promote literacy and love of reading by creating a network of these cute little libraries holding books you can take for free! The folks behind this project have the ambitous aim of setting up more Little Free Libraries than carnegy built regular libraries during his time. Currently there are a number of these libraries around the USA with plans for global expansion. I hope they surpass their goal.

Information to join this project is here, and you can buy your very own Little Free Library here. The actual little libraries are not cheap, but they sure are cute, and it is a great project.

She talked about the use these resources get at her library, and mentioned that it is best to be very careful about privacy issues when helping patrons with these resources, and when at all possible ask them to get help from a friend or family member, instead of the librarian.

The third and last presenter was John Bertot, Director, Center for Library & Information Innovation, University of Maryland. Bertot talked about the intersection of public libraries and E-government. He began by sharing a map of all the public libraries in the USA commenting that they really cover the entire nation, and that now that governments at every level are cutting resources, the public library has often had to fill this gap.

Bertot share some information from the Center for Library & Information Innovation (CLII) in the College of Information Studies at the University of Maryland illustrating this relationship between libraries and e-gov. This site includes a lot of statistical information on the subject, and these handy fliers (this is the e-gov one), that will give you a great starting point if you need to advocate for these services at your library.

At the end Bertot talked a little about the increasing need for librarians to be able to fully understand how to work with e-gov material. Because of this need the University of Maryland has established a program for E-Government Librarianship!

The whole program was good, and best of all it was free! I’m already looking forward to more interesting webinars!

Today I spent the day at the Library of Congress and loved it. I was there with my mother and brother and we took one of the guided tours of the building. This tour starts off with a short movie including a number of brief interviews with some of the librarians who highlight many of the treasures in the collection. The tour focuses more of the history of the library, and explain a good amount of the art found on the walls of the building, but doesn’t say much about the library’s holdings.

As a very brief recap; the library was established in 1800 by an act of Congress and was originally housed inside the Capitol building. In August of 1814 British troops set fire to the building, destroying the entire collection. Shortly thereafter, former president Thomas Jefferson offered to sell his entire collection to rebuild the library. Congress decides to buy his collection and begin to redevelop the library. This original collection is on display, and still in use.

In case you haven’t heard, the USA doesn’t technically have a national library, instead the Library of Congress (LOC) fills this role. And while the library works for the needs of Congress, they work to collect on all things USA related and their collections include millions of items from around the world. As the country’s legal deposit the LOC holds of copy of every single book published in the USA, and any book published abroad that has been translated for the USA market.

From the millions of items the LOC holds they have some of the most amazing collections in the country. The American Folklife Center gathers audio recordings on pretty much every posible topic, they collect and produce reading material for the blind and physically handicapped, American Memory provides access to many of their holdings related to American history in a variety of formats, THOMAS was launched in 1995 to make available legislation information, they also participate in the World Digital Library.

The LOC also has a lot of free resources for librarians. You can browse through their OPAC, search through their Authorities files, look through their Print & Photographs, and listen through their Sound Inventory. There is also the handy Z39.50 which allows you to run simultaneous searches through their catalogs and several other libraries around the globe.

All in all it was a great visit, even through it including a minor scare due to a suspected gunman in the area. The library was briefly locked down, but 30 minutes later we were on our way again. Before leaving the library we did see the oldest known map where the American continent is named as such, and a draft to the Declaration of Independence!

If you are in DC stop by and visit the library, and if you are elsewhere take a look at their countless resources online. And keep in mind that on top of everything you’ll find at their website, they also have a Flickr account, and an account on Youtube.

OPAC

My friend found this article and started a great conversation. The article explains the story of two women (Sharon Cook, and Beth Boisvert) who work at a public library in Jessamine County, Kentucky, who decided what material was “appropriate” for young patrons, and went so far as to remove a book from the collection so it could not circulate. The book in question is “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Volume IV: The Black Dossier“a graphic novel that won the 2007 “Favourite Original Graphic Novel” Eagle Award, and includes some nudity which these women did not think was appropriate.

I found it appalling that Cook began by checking the book out, in effect removed it from the shelves. When a patron placed a hold on it, she checked to see who the patron was, and upon realizing it was a 11 year old girl, she overrode the hold, thus preventing anyone from checking out the book. She still hasn’t returned it.

I’m quite tired of all these cries of “we are protecting our children;” it’s simply not our job, nor our responsibility as librarians, and other library employees to decide what is appropriate or not for our patrons to read. This type of censorship is all the more enraging when I know of so many cases where the public library has been a save heaven for children and young adults who wish to explore topics that might not have been easily embraced at home or with their peers. Just to bring up one example, I know several people whose explorations at the public library allowed them to gain the courage to come out the closet. The public library should encourage exploration of all kinds.

I don’t want to end this on such a sour note. Unfortunately there are plenty of nosy people trying to impose their views on others. I’d rather end this post on an uplifting note. Not that long ago StoryCorps release a story of Judge Olly Neal, who credits his open minded librarian for much of his success in life. He says that as a young man he did not feel comfortable reading because he thought his peers would make fun of him, yet one day he was in the library and saw a book that looked a little “risque” and wanted to read it. Not feeling he wanted to be “outed” as a reader, he took the book under his jacket, read it, and returned in a couple weeks later, only to find another book for him in the exact same spot. He took that book home as well and read it. This cycle when on for some time, and only years later did he learn that his librarian had seen him take that first book, and instead of chastising him for wanting to read “inappropriate books” she went out and looked for more books for him to read. It was his librarian who kept putting the books where he could find them, and encouraged him to continue reading. What a different attitude towards a user. This last librarian respected her patron, and helped enrich someone’s life.

Cheers to all the wonderful, open-minded librarians!

12.05.09 – This book has since been recataloged and placed in the adult section of the library.

Need help finding something interesting to do? Well Goby could help you. It offers you three search boxes where you can input information about the type of activity you would like to do, location, and time. Hit search, and there you go, lots of options! When you click on the individual results you will be taken to the original source.

I ran a couple searches and found that some of the most obvious results for restaurants I knew about did not show up, although I did learn of a few other places I hadn’t heard of. While running other searched I noticed it said I had multiple hits in my results, but when I looked it was all the same place. If Goby finds information from various sources, it can’t tell that they are all the same place/event.

Goby is no where close to perfect, but you might be lucky and find a new restaurant or event of interest.

Currently Goby only provides results for the USA.
