Paradero Para Libros Para Parques

Monday morning I was out walking around downtown Bogota when I happened upon this lovely little library in the park. This stand makes part of the Paradero Para Libros Para Parques, a program created about 10 years ago to help promote literacy across the country. The program is part of Fundalectura in association with city parks.

Currently there are 47 PPP in various neighborhoods of Bogota, and a total of 100 across the country. Each stand is staffed for about 12 hours a week by volunteer (they do receive a small stipend, but apparently it isn’t much).

The PPP are often open during the weekend and while in service they offer regular library services. Patrons can check books out, and the person staffing the PPP organizes activities (mainly for children), is available to answer questions, and often help children with their homework.

El lunes por la mañana estaba caminando por el centro de Bogotá cuando me encontré con esta pequeña y encantadora biblioteca en el parque. Este puesto hace que parte del Paradero Para Libros Para Parques, un programa creado hace como 10 años para ayudar a promover la alfabetización en todo el país. El programa es parte de Fundalectura en asociación con los parques de la ciudad.

Actualmente hay 47 PPP en varios barrios de Bogotá, y un total de 100 en todo el país. Cada puesto presta servicios a la comunidad más o menos por 12 horas a la semana y funcionan con la labor de voluntarios (entiendo que reciben algún pago, pero aparentemente no es mucho).

Usualmente los PPP estan abiertos durante el fin de semana y ofrecen servicios de biblioteca. Los usuarios pueden sacar libros, y el personal de la PPP organiza actividades (principalmente para los niños), está disponible para responder preguntas, y muchas veces ayudan a los niños con sus tareas.

Today I went to visit a couple of the libraries that make up the BiblioRed in Bogota. BiblioRed is Bogota’s public library systems, and it’s composed of a number of large, and small libraries, as well as a bibliobus. Today I went to visit the Biblioteca Pública Parque El Tunal, and the Biblioteca Pública Virgilio Barco, both of which are considered “bibliotecas mayores” within the systems (here is a organization map of the library systems).

As any other public library system BiblioRed offeres library services to the general public, but they also have specialized programs to reach hospitals, prisons, evacuation centers, and health centers. BiblioRed as an idea was conceived back in 1998, opening the doors to three mayor libraries in 2001; In 2008 they implemented the bibliobus (mobile library). Since the city implemented these public libraries they have been gathering awards and positive recognition, both locally and from abroad.

While I visited La biblioteca Parque El Tunal, I saw a number of facilities to help bring the community into the library; there is state of the art computer lad designed to assist patrons who deaf and/or blind; the library has a large auditorium that seats 230, and several training rooms which can be reserved by patrons; and there is a large children room with a collection that holds material in Spanish, English, and Braille. This room was full of kids when I was there. At the Virgilio Barco I ran into an awesome Salsa concert in full swing, a very moving photograph exhibit showing the effects of land mines in Colombia, and I happened upon the screening of short films about Bogota. Although I wasn’t able to visit the other major libraries in the system, it seems like they all have wonderful events going on all the time.

As a network, the library systems offers a number of online resources, including access to several mayor databases, recommendations for useful websites, and virtual reference services. All of these services are free, but to check items out, patrons must become “members” of the library, but at 5,000 Colombian pesos (about $2.50 dollars) I say it’s a great deal!

Hoy fui a visitar algunas de las bibliotecas que conforman la Bibliored en Bogotá. Bibliored es el sistemas de bibliotecas públicas de Bogotá, que están adscritas a la secretaria  de educación y está compuesto de una serie de bibliotecas mayores, otras pequeñas, así como un bibliobús. Hoy visite la Biblioteca Pública Parque El Tunal y la Biblioteca Pública Virgilio Barco, las cuales son considerados como “bibliotecas mayores” dentro del sistemas (aqui hay un mapa de la organización del sistemas bibliotecario).

Como cualquier otro sistema de bibliotecas públicas Bibliored ofrece servicios de biblioteca para el público en general pero también tienen programas especializados para llegar a hospitales, cárceles, centros de evacuación y centros de salud. BiblioRed como idea fue concebida en 1998, abriendo las puertas de tres bibliotecas mayores en 2001; En 2008 se implementó el bibliobús (biblioteca móvil). Desde que empezó a funcionar este sistema de bibliotecas públicas estas han ido acumulando premios y reconocimiento a nivel nacional e internacional.

Mientras estuve en La biblioteca Parque El Tunal vi una serie de instalaciones para ayudar a atraer a la comunidad a la biblioteca. Tienen un salón con la ultima tecnología diseñado para ayudar a usuarios sordos y ciegos, la biblioteca cuenta con un gran auditorio para 230 personas, varios cubiculos de estudio que pueden ser reservados por los usuarios, y hay una sala grande para niños con una colección que contiene materiales en Español, inglés, y braille. Esta habitación estaba llena de niños, cuando mientras visitaba la biblioteca. En la Virgilio Barco me encontré con un impresionante concierto de salsa en pleno apogeo, una exposición de fotografía muy conmovedora que muestra los efectos de las minas terrestres en Colombia, y me encontré con la proyección de cortometrajes sobre Bogotá. Aunque no pude visitar las demás bibliotecas del sistema parece que todas tienen eventos maravillosos para todo el mundo.

Como red, le sistemas de biblioteca ofrece una serie de recursos en línea, incluyendo el acceso a bases de datos, varias recomendaciones para los sitios web útiles, y servicios de referencia virtual. Todos estos servicios son gratuitos, pero para retirar material para llevarlo a casa los usuarios deben convertirse en “miembros” de la biblioteca, adquiriendo un carné de afiliado ¡pero por un costo de 5.000 pesos colombianos (alrededor de $ 2.50 dólares) esto es una ganga!

While I was growing up in Colombia libraries were very scarce, the only library one ever heard mentioned was the Biblioteca Luis Ángel Arango (BLAA), which I finally got to visit.

While the Biblioteca Luis Ángel Arango is owned by the Banco de la República de Colombia, it is very much a public library, and open to everyone. The library’s collection is available to anyone who walks in the front door. All visitors can consult books while in the library and access a number of online databases that library subscribed to, but to check a book out, or to use the databases remotely, patrons must become members of the library. And while the BLAA is based in Bogota, the Banco de la República has smaller libraries and research centers across the country, which regularly exchange material through ILL.

The BLAA’s collection includes about 2 million items; most of the library’s collection is housed in Bogota, although they to have a remote storage facility in Ipiales where they keep material that doesn’t circulate very often. And while the library is technically not a legal deposit for the country, they have huge holdings of all the major newspapers, and many of the books published in the country. The library also has 11 reading rooms, each one specialized. There are reading rooms for maps, audio-visual material, periodicals, language learning, a children’s section, the Sciences, and Arts and Humanities. Each room has a reference librarian as well as a number of library assistants to help patrons.

One of the reading rooms that caught my attention was the music room. This room not only holds music related material, but has 3 rooms with pianos patrons can use for free, and 2 other rooms where users can borrow and practice with brass instruments. The music room also has 2 small auditoriums which can be check out by users to screen movies, or hold events, and where the library regularly schedules events that are open to the public. The library also includes a gorgeous auditorium said to have the best acoustics in all of South America.

Up until a few years ago when more public libraries open up in Bogota, the BLAA would see an average of 9 thousand visitors a day, 12 thousand on weekend days! I was there on a Friday afternoon, and I saw plenty of people there. Traffic in the BLAA is probably this high because many local universities don’t have large collections, and many send their students to the BLAA to do research. Because of this the BLAA collection includes a lot of university texts, but they also make a conscious effort to cater to users with little or no formal education.

Over the years the library has also begun creating a number of online collections, some of which highlight other holdings of the bank, including the Museo Botero, and La Casa de la Moneda. There is also an online library for children which offer full access to a number of Colombian children’s books. They also have an online version of a number of interesting exhibits. The library (through the bank) also has a Flickr account which includes some really fascinating images.

Right now the BLAA has two temprary exhibits. The first one is about Colombia’s independence and includes pieces about Simon Bolivar, and Policarpa Salavarrieta. The other exhibit is about the history of cartoons in Colombia since independence. Both are very much worth seeing. The whole library is very much worth seeing; you can easily spend the entire day there and still have plenty to do.

Mientras vivía en Colombia las biblioteca publicas siempre fueron muy escasas, y la única que uno oía nombre alguna vez era la Biblioteca Luis Ángel Arango (BLAA); solo hasta ahora logro visitarla.

Aunque la Biblioteca Luis Ángel Arango es propiedad del Banco de la República de Colombia, esta es totalmente una biblioteca pública, y está abierta a todos. La colección de la biblioteca está disponible para cualquier persona que entre por la puerta. Todos los visitantes pueden consultar libros y acceder a un número de bases de datos en línea a las que la biblioteca está suscrita, pero si quiere llevarse un libro a la casa, o utilizar las bases de datos de forma remota, deberán hacerse miembros de la biblioteca. Y mientras la BLAA tiene su sede principal en Bogotá, el Banco de la República tiene bibliotecas más pequeñas y centros de investigación por todo el país, y estas regularmente hacen intercambio a través de préstamos interbibliotecario.

La colección de la BLAA incluye cerca de 2 millones de artículos; la mayoría de la colección se encuentra en Bogotá, pero también tienen una instalación de almacenamiento remoto en Ipiales, donde se guarda el material que no circula con mucha frecuencia. Y mientras que la biblioteca no es técnicamente un depósito legal para el país, esta tiene enormes cantidades de todos los periódicos más importantes en Colombia, y muchos de los libros publicados en el país. La biblioteca también cuenta con 11 salas de lectura, cada uno especializada. Hay salas de lectura de mapas, material audiovisual, publicaciones periódicas, para aprendizaje de idiomas, una sección para niños, las Ciencias, y las Artes y las Humanidades. Cada salón de lectura tiene un bibliotecario de referencia, así como un número de auxiliares de biblioteca para ayudar a los usuarios.

Una de las salas de lectura que más me llamó la atención fue la sala de música. Esta sala no sólo tiene material relacionado con la música, pero tiene 3 habitaciones con pianos que se pueden utilizar de forma gratuita, y otras 2 habitaciones donde se pueden tomar prestado y practicar con instrumentos de viento. La sala de música también cuenta con 2 auditorios pequeños que se pueden usar para ver películas, u organizar otros eventos, y donde la biblioteca regularmente programas eventos que están abiertos al público. La biblioteca también incluye un auditorio magnífico, del cual dicen que tiene la mejor acústica en toda América del Sur.

Hasta hace unos años, cuando aún no habían otras bibliotecas públicas en Bogotá, la BLAA vería un promedio de 9 mil visitantes al día, ¡12 mil en los días de fin de semana! Yo estuve allí un viernes por la tarde, y vi un montón de gente allí. El tráfico en la BLAA es probablemente tan alto debido a que muchas universidades locales no tienen grandes colecciones, y muchos envían a sus estudiantes a la BLAA para hacer investigación. Debido a esto la colección de la BLAA incluye una gran cantidad de textos universitarios, pero también hacen un esfuerzo para atender a los usuarios con poca o ninguna educación formal.

Con los años la biblioteca también ha comenzado a crear una serie de colecciones en línea, algunos de los que ponen en relieve otras explotaciones del banco, incluyendo el Museo Botero y La Casa de la Moneda. También hay una biblioteca en línea para niños que ofrecen acceso completo a una serie de libros colombianos para niños. También tienen una versión en línea de una serie de interesantes exposiciones. La biblioteca (a través del banco) también tiene una cuenta de Flickr, que incluye algunas imágenes realmente fascinantes.

Ahora mismo la BLAA tiene dos exposiciones temporales. La primera es sobre la independencia de Colombia, e incluye obras sobre Simón Bolívar y Policarpa Salavarrieta. La otra exposición es sobre la historia de las caricaturas en Colombia desde la independencia. Realmente vale la pena ver ambas. Enserio, vale la pena ver toda la biblioteca, fácilmente puede pasar el día entero allí y todavía tendría mucho que hacer.

I arrived in Bogota last night and today I’m off to visit a few libraries, my first stop is the Biblioteca Nacional de Colombia. As Colombia’s national library, one of their main responsibilities is serving as the country’s legal deposit.

The collection includes monographs, journals, and a large music collection. The library’s music collection includes both written music and recordings, a number of which were recoded in the library, back when they had a complete recording studio on the top floor. You can access all the digitized music scores here. They have also created a musical map of the country which will guide you through the various musical genres.

The library has also created a digital library where it is uploading and making freely available much of its collection.

Right now there is also a very complete exhibit about “La Voragine” (The Vortex) by José Eustacio Rivera, on the first floor of the library.

Anoche llegué a Bogotá y hoy me voy a visitar algunas bibliotecas, mi primera parada es la Biblioteca Nacional de Colombia. Como biblioteca nacional una de sus principales responsabilidades es servir como depósito legal del país.

La colección incluye monografías, publicaciones periódicas, y una gran colección musical. Colección de música de la biblioteca incluye tanto partituras como grabaciones, muchas de las cuales se grabaron en la biblioteca, cuando esta tenía un estudio de grabación completo en la planta superior. Puede acceder a toda la partituras digitalizadas aquí. También han creado un mapa musical del país que le guiará a través de los distintos géneros musicales.

La biblioteca también ha creado una biblioteca digital donde se carga y hacer libremente disponibles gran parte de su colección.

Ahora también hay una exposición muy completa sobre “La Vorágine” de José Eustasio Rivera, en el primer piso de la biblioteca.

This Book Is Overdue!: How Librarians and Cybrarians Can Save Us All by Marilyn Johnson

I picked up a galley of this book while attending ALA Midwinter, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Marilyn Johnson became interested in librarians while researching her previous book on obituaries, and running into a few fascinating librarians death notices. A few quirky librarians may have initially caught her attention, but she is clearly enamored with the field, the staff, and the whole concept of sharing information for free.

Johnson’s book focuses on public libraries in the USA North East, but the cases she discusses, and examples she gives can be applied to the whole country, and much of it can extend to many other types of libraries. Through the book she discusses the initial pains of migrating information to emerging technologies, working hard to reach out to new users, coming up with creative programing, and the painful adjustments many librarians have had to deal with during this economic downturn.

In the book you will read about the Connecticut librarians who challenged the Patriot Act, an academic librarian who has an amazing zine collection, librarians who have migrated to Second Life, and the fascinating networks they have formed. You’ll also read about an archivist who boxes and how this very detail made him the perfect candidate to save a large boxing collection in Miami. Johnson also talked to the “dog” librarians, and several librarians at NYPL.

The chapter on what is happening at NYPL really stuck with me, and it’s a situation that is being replicated all over. Basically the financial crisis has forced them to reevaluate how the library runs, who their main users are, and how they may best serve them with reduced funds. Here Johnson interviews librarians working on new technologies, another one who loves helping authors do research, a couple more that have begun courting local artists and showing them what treasures the libraries has for them. She also spoke to a few librarians who’s departments have been eliminated and job descriptions have been significantly altered. Many of these librarians express concern about the patrons they had served, and the collections they have come to know so well, while questioning if their expertise will really be of most service in their new positions.

Throughout the book Johnson also shares her experiences learning about the field. She comments on the librarian who taught her now to store screen shots, instead of trying to book mark everything she liked on the web. She also talked about a course she took on archival practices, and tells us about her learning curve with new tools in the field.

The book is a very quick, thoroughly enjoyable read, and Johnson’s praise for librarians, archivists, and so called “cybrarians” is music to this librarian’s ears!

Recogí una copia sin corregir de este libro mientras asistía a ALA Midwinter, y lo disfruté muchísimo. Marilyn Johnson inicialmente se interesa en el mundo de las bibliotecas mientras hacia investigación para su libro anterior sobre los obituarios. Ahí se tropezó con varios anuncios fascinantes basados en la vida de bibliotecarios. La autora podrá haber empezado este proyecto después de interesarse por ciertos bibliotecarios particulares, pero pero esta claro que está fascinada con el mundo de las bibliotecas, su personal, y todo el concepto de compartir información de forma gratuita.

El libro de Johnson se centra en las bibliotecas públicas en el noreste de EE.UU. pero los casos que discute y los ejemplos que da se puede aplicar a todo el país, y muchos pueden extenderse a muchos otros tipos de bibliotecas. A través del libro Johnson nos cuenta de los dolores iniciales de la migración de información a nuevas tecnologías, el arduo trabajando para llegar a nuevos usuarios, como organizar programación creativa, y los dolorosos ajustes que muchos bibliotecarios han tenido que vivir durante esta recesión económica.

En el libro usted leerá acerca de los bibliotecarios de Connecticut que impugnaron el Patriot Act, un bibliotecario académico que tiene una colección asombrosa de mini revistas (zines), los bibliotecarios que han emigrado a Second Life, y las redes profesionales tan fascinantes que se hayan formado. También leerá acerca de un archivero quien boxea y cómo este detalle lo convirtió en el candidato perfecto para guardar una gran colección sobre el boxeo en Miami. Johnson también habló con la bibliotecarios para “perros” bibliotecarios y varios bibliotecarios en la biblioteca publica de Nueva York (NYPL).

El capítulo sobre lo que está sucediendo en NYPL fue el que mas me impacto, y es una situación que se repite en todas partes. Básicamente, la crisis financiera ha obligado a revaluar cómo funciona la biblioteca, quienes son sus principales usuarios, y cómo se puede prestar mejores servicios con fondos reducidos. Aquí Johnson entrevista bibliotecarios que trabajan con tecnologías emergentes, otro bibliotecaria que le encanta ayudar a los autores haciendo investigación para sus libros, un par de jóvenes que han comenzado a cortejar a artistas locales y les muestra los tesoros que bibliotecas tiene para ellos. También entrevisto a varios bibliotecarios de departamentos que han sido eliminados y a quienes les han cambiado sus obligaciones laborales. Muchos de estos bibliotecarios expresan preocupación por sus usuarios, y las colecciones que han llegado a conocer tan bien, mientras se cuestiona si su experiencia laboral será realmente aprovechada al máximo en sus nuevos trabajos.

A lo largo del libro de Johnson también comparte sus experiencias de aprendizaje sobre el campo. Ella comenta sobre la bibliotecaria que le enseñó como capturar y almacenar imágenes de la web, en lugar de tratar de reservar la marca todas las paginas que le gustaba. También habló de un curso que tomó en las prácticas de archivo, y nos habla de su curva de aprendizaje con las nuevas herramientas en el campo.

El libro se puede leer muy rápido, es entretenido y divertido de leer, ¡y el elogio de Johnson para los bibliotecarios, archiveros, y los llamados “cybrarians” es música para los oídos de esta bibliotecaria!

Travesía is a website put together by Spain’s Ministry of Culture’s General Subcommittee on the Coordination of Libraries. Basically the sites aims at promoting collaboration among Spanish librarians, and offers them a space to work together.

Information on the site is divided into three main categories; 1) Documentation that will aid collaboration among Spanish Librarians; 2) Publications by the Spain’s Ministry of Culture’s General Subcommittee on the Coordination of Libraries; and 3) Offers access to other relevant publications.

The site functions in all the official languages used in Spanish, plus English.

Travesía es un sitio web elaborado por la Subdirección General de Coordinación Bibliotecaria del Ministerio de Cultura de España. Básicamente el sitios tiene como objetivo promover la colaboración entre bibliotecarios en españa y les ofrece un espacio para trabajar juntos.

Información en el sitio se divide en tres categorías principales: 1) Documentación que ayudará a la colaboración entre los bibliotecarios españoles, 2) Publicaciones de la Subdirección General de Coordinación Bibliotecaria del Ministerio de Cultura de España, y 3) Ofrece acceso a otras publicaciones pertinentes.

El sitio funciona en todos los idiomas oficiales que se usan en españa, y en inglés.

The British Library is always up to something interesting; I just discovered their Database of Bookbindings. This is an entire online collection dedicated to the bindings of books held by the British Library, some of which date back to 1500! The collection also includes some items held by the National Library of Netherlands.

The collection includes a lot of images that will help you better understand who books have been put together over the years, and will likely be a great resource for anyone learning this beautiful craft.

La Biblioteca Británica está creando proyectos interesantes; acabo de descubrir su base de datos de encuadernaciones. Se trata de una colección en línea dedicada a la encuadernación de libros de la Biblioteca Británica, algunos de los cuales se remontan a 1500! La colección también incluye algunos elementos de la Biblioteca Nacional de Países Bajos.

La colección incluye una gran cantidad de imágenes que le ayudarán a comprender mejor como se han encuadernado los libros a travez de los años, y probablemente será un gran recurso para cualquier persona que aprenden este hermoso arte.

Gringo: A Coming of Age in Latin America by Chesa Boudin

I picked up this book because of the title; I’m a big fan of the word “Gringo.” And for those of you who are about to get offended, know that I am the daughter of a self-proclaimed “gringo” and am a half “gringa” myself; to me the word just means someone from the US of A.

Chesa Boudin’s memoir recounts his adventures throughout Latin American during a 9 year stretch. Boudin first arrived in Guatemala to learn Spanish, but eventually visited Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina. For each country he recounts some of the country’s history and current situation. And amazingly Boudin happens to find himself in the middle of many of the region’s unfolding news stories. He was in Chile during 9/11, and was in Buenos Aires when Argentina’s economy collapsed. He spent some time in Caracas while Chavez was seeking reelection in 2006, and visited Peace Communities in Colombia. In Ecuador he describes the intense socio-economic divisions in the country, and in Bolivia he talks to miners who recount the hardship of their work.

In general this is another story of another “gringo” traveling through the region, there are plenty of those memoirs out there already, but what sets this one apart is that Boudin is the son of two former Weather Underground member, and his background clearly permeated everything he sees. Boudin isn’t one of those self absorbed “gringos” traveling while trying to discover their roots or who think they already know everything about the region, instead he openly acknowledges that his outside status often gets him amazing deals; He even has a name of this, it’s the “gringo wild card!” The gringo wild card allowed him to cross international boarders without hassles, got him the best seats on long bus rides, and allowed him to befriend people from every soci0-economic background.

All in all a good read.

Empece a leer este libro por el título, me encanta la palabra “Gringo”. Y para aquellos de ustedes que están a punto de ofenderse, sepan que yo soy la hija de un auto-proclamado “gringo” y soy mitad “gringa.” Para mí, la palabra simplemente significa alguien de los EE.UU.

Las memorias Chesa Boudin relata sus aventuras por América Latina durante un trecho de 9 años. Boudin llegó por primera vez a Guatemala para aprender españoly durante el transcurso de los años termina visitando Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Chile y Argentina. Para cada país Boudin narra parte de su historia y la situación actual. Y sorprendentemente Boudin logra encontrarse en medio del despliegue de noticias en la zona. Estuvo en Chile durante el 11 de septiembre, y estuvo en Buenos Aires cuando la economía de Argentina se desplomó. Pasó algún tiempo en Caracas mientras que Chávez buscaba su reelección en el 2006, y visitó las comunidades de paz en Colombia. En el Ecuador describen las intensas divisiones socio-económicas del país, y en Bolivia habla con los mineros que relatan las dificultades de su trabajo.

En general esta es otra historia de otro “gringo” viajando a través de la región, y ya hay un montón de estas memorias por ahí, pero lo que distingue a esta es que Boudin es el hijo de dos ex-miembros del Weather Underground, y sus antecedentes claramente filtran todo lo que ve. Boudin no es otro “gringo” absorto en si mismo que viajan para tratar de descubrir sus raíces o quien cree que ya sabe todo sobre la región. Boudin reconoce abiertamente que recibe trato preferencial por ser extranjero; incluso tiene un nombre para este fenómeno, ¡la “carta fantástica del gringo!” La “carta fantástica del gringo” le permitió cruzar fronteras internacionales sin problemas, le consiguió los mejores asientos en viajes largos por bus, y le permitió entablar amistad con personas de todas las clases socio-económicas.

En definitiva un buen libro.

Yesterday while I was riding the bus to work a new billboard caught my eye, one for Read.gov. Read.gov is part of the Library of Congress, and it aims to encourage reading of all kinds of material, by every age group. On the website you’ll find recommendations by age group, and for educators, and under each category you’ll find a few online books, and videos for author readings. There is also a section for the competition “Letters about Literature” which gathers entries by students who have written to authors telling them how their books have changed their lives.

Read.gov also hosts the Exquisite Corps Adventure, a game in which people all over the world are collaborating in the writing of a single story. Every two weeks there is a new chapter in the adventure. The project is aided by Jon Scieszka, the National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature. The site also hosts a collection of webcasts of author readings, including authors for every taste and all ages. The section titled “Booklists” offers suggested readings that can be complemented with material found at the American Memory website.

I’m delighted that the government is spending money to promote reading, I just wish the billboard in my neighborhood was also in Spanish and Portuguese; and now that I say that, I wish the Read.gov site also offered more resources in languages other than English.

Read.gov es parte de la Biblioteca del Congreso y su objetivo es estimula la lectura de todo tipo de material y para todas las edades. En el sitio web encontrará recomendaciones por grupos de edad y para los educadores. Bajo cada categoría encontrará algunos libros digitales y vídeos de lecturas por varios autores. También hay una sección para el concurso “Cartas sobre Literatura” que reúne las entradas escritas por los estudiantes y dirigidas a los autores de libros que les han cambiado la vida.

Read.gov también incluye la Aventura del Cuerpo Exquisito, un juego en el que personas de todo el mundo están colaborando en la redacción de una sola historia.
