A friend just emailed me asking if I would offer some advice regarding networking in the library field after reading a plea for advice by a woman she follows online. So here goes;

Después de leer una petición de asesoramiento de una mujer a la que sigue en línea un amiga, esta me envió un correo electrónico preguntándome si me gustaría ofrecer algunos consejos sobre cómo construir relaciones o redes profesionales en el mundo de las bibliotecas. Así que aquí va;

Dear Disorganization;

Estimada Disorganization;

So sorry to hear you are feeling isolated in the library field, but there is no need to despair, this world is FULL of librarians, and with very, very, few exceptions they are usually great people, and colleagues. And maybe you are not as alone as you think. A friend who follows you online cared enough about your plead to email asking me to offer advice.

However many networking ideas I could suggest, they all boil down to one thing, personal relationships. While library school, jobs, and library conferences are a good place to start networking, I feel that reaching out to people whose work you admire is the most effective and sincere way of making new friends in the library world (or anywhere, really). One of the librarians who has influenced my career the most, I became friend with through pure determination. I was paired up with Isabel at a library event and found lots to talk about over lunch. After that initial meeting I emailed several times asking to visit her library, and asking to learn about her work. Multiple times she told me she was too busy, but eventually accepted, and eight years later, she is a good friend of mine, and someone who I regularly bounce professional and career ideas with.

I’ve also made a number of library friends simply by asking questions. I’ve never actually met Alberto in person, yet we have been online friends for at least 5 years. We “met” after being paired up in an online class, and found we have common professional interest. We have been in touch ever since, and continue to seek each others professional advice, and help each other publicize our library related projects.

Reach out to “online” librarians whose work/writing you find interesting. I think the first time I reached one to one of these “online” librarians was the time I emailed Loida, asking about her work, and the working being done in Queens Public Library. A simple email of genuine interest resulted in a job interview and eventual job offer.

Likewise, I’ve had other librarians contact me because they have found me online, and as long as they aren’t trying to get me to place advertising on my site or sell me something, I will write back. A few years ago I met a group of Colombian library students through my blog, and have kept in touch with them over the years. Mauricio emailed me after seeing my latest blog post mentioning that I was in Bogota, and I wrote back. This simple encounter has resulted in my being reacquainted with the emerging library world back home, and I was interviewed for a library related radio show they were working on. I have since met other librarians back home, offered them professional advice, and I started following Mauricio’s blog. Through these relationships I continue to learn about the library field in Latin America and around the globe.

And sometimes I’ve been lucky enough to meet these “online” librarians in person. Probably the best of these encounters took place in the Romanian embassy in DC. A library friend was hosting a professional event and obviously invited a bunch of librarians who happen to be in DC for ALA. I can’t remember how, but at some point Hannah and I realized we were the authors of the blogs we followed. It was such a mind blowing experience for both of us to meet the woman who we had been following vicariously through her blog, and both of us laughed to realize we were younger than the other one had expected.

While at my current job I’ve also made a point of meeting other librarians who I can collaborate with, and without exception they have all replied, and some I meet regularly for lunch or coffee. Often my first encounters with these librarians will be prompted by work research, but once that initial contact and introduction has taken place, I always offer to meet in person. Without exception all have accepted, and many of these encounters have resulted in us visiting each others library, and ongoing professional exchanges.

While the job situation is hard on everyone, I would suggest starting with the basic advice of reaching out to the specific librarians you would like to meet and get to know. Everyone’s flattered by having someone be interested in their work, and most will likely make time to talk or email with you. If these librarians are in the same city, offer to meet for coffee or lunch. Yes, everyone is busy, but we all need to eat at some point.

Best of luck!

¡Mucha suerte!

Next to Google, Wikipedia is the major source of information used by people today. But libraries also own much content that isn’t available on Wikipedia, so how should we make sure users don’t stop there? In this session, Aaron Tay, Senior Librarian & eServices Facilitator at National University of Singapore, will cover ideas on how to link resources from Wikipedia to library resources using various tools including John Mark Ockerbloom’s Forward to Libraries service. In the opposite direction, libraries can also move in and use Wikipedia entries to enhance findability of their collections. Wednesday, June 12
There are an abundance of free legal research resources available. Some resources provide all of their content for free while others provide a mixture of free and fee-based information. We will review a variety of electronic resources including university and nonprofit organization sites, government sites, and more. As with any resource, we will discover that one legal resource is more valuable than another for particular types of research. Wednesday, June 12
In small communities, libraries can often be the only provider of free public access to technology and the internet. And as more people turn to their library to learn technology skills, even the tiniest of libraries are faced with the challenge of providing training to patrons with limited staff, resources, and space. Learn from small and rural libraries who are making training a reality for their patrons, using volunteers, leveraging partnerships and integrating learning into everyday interactions. Whether the technology training you do (or want to do) is one-to-one, on-the-fly or a more formal program, this session will include tips and suggestions for improving the effectiveness of the training you provide. http://lj.libraryjournal.com/category/webcasts/
Customer segmentation studies and data analytics combines demographic data with lifestyle information to help public libraries better understand who their customers are and what services best meet the community’s need, whether school-aged children or empty-nester couples. This type of GIS-based market segmentation can also help inform strategies around such initiatives as a levy ballot and also eliminate inefficient marketing efforts. Wednesday, June 12
http://infopeople.org/training/view/webinar
Instead of adding projects or tasks to library staff in an effort to promote library services, the community-led approach establishes the library staff as trained listeners and brokers of awareness to provide service development for both marginalized and comfortable community sectors. The community-led approach helps the library to identify which traditional library roles are now redundant, and thus of little worth to the community, allowing both professional library staff and support staff to concentrate on those services that are meaningful to the public. Community-led service development allows both the community and its library staff to grow, become engaged in the civic sphere they share and find the best venues for individuals to pursue their aspirations for their primary needs of health and welfare, as well as life-long learning and the support of personal values. Thursday, June 13
How many higher education institutions in the United States have web or technology accessibility policies? What do these policies look like? Are they effective? What constitutes a good accessibility policy? Presenters in this session will be exploring these questions with results from their recent research project on this topic, and by sharing their own experiences with policy development and accessibility-related planning. After years of buzz, the Library of Congress implemented the new cataloging standard RDA (Resource Description and Access) on March 31, 2013. What is RDA and why should I care? RDA is part of the ongoing transformation of library data with an objective of responsiveness to user needs. Susan Wynne will discuss the major differences between AACR2 practices and RDA, focusing on how RDA affects user displays and navigation in local catalogs, WorldCat, and elsewhere. http://lj.libraryjournal.com/category/webcasts/
Data-driven decision making is creating large pools of data around which public libraries are trying to define everything from overarching strategies to granular collection development strategies. Although the analysis of this data is often left to third-parties, some libraries are taking the step of hiring their own data analysts to help administrators decide what the data means, why it matters, and how best to present it to other stakeholders.

So, what exactly does the Librarian of Congress do? In short, a LOT. Just from this video put together by Washington Notebook, Dr. James H. Billington gives us a great overview of what he does, and what the Library of Congress (LOC) offers all of us. In general the the Librarian of Congress oversees the Library of Congress, including the collection, and all the services they offer us. Given that the LOC is one of the world’s largest libraries, the Librarian of Congress oversees projects as diverse as managing and curating the library’s holdings, offering research and reference assistance to everyone, offering educational lessons and resources for teachers, and archiving modern sources of information such as everyone’s tweets. In essence the LOC serves as support for the nation’s entire library and educational systems.

The Librarian of Congress also work to serve Congress, specially through the Congressional Research Service, and the Law Library of Congress. These two services work to offer Congress accurate and unbiased information so that they can perform their jobs and in Dr. Billington’s words “make intelligent decisions.” (Whether some of the more recent decisions Congress has been making are actually “intelligent” is clearly open to interpretation.)

Dr. Billington also sees his post as regularly modernizing his interpretation of the LOC’s mission, regularly adopting new technologies, and each day offering more and more information in electronic format, thus making this amazing collection more accessible to the world. Just in recent years the LOC not only began gathering everyone’s tweets, but also opened an account on Flickr, Youtube, Facebook, and other social media platforms. For years they have also been working with Google to create the World Digital Library. The list of resources and neat collections offered by the LOC seems limitless. They also offer us the American Memory collection, containing primary resources of a wide range of topics. If you are in DC you can also visit their Local History and Genealogy Reading Room, granting you access to lots of genealogy sources.

Dr. Billington has been at this post since 1987, and has now served under 5 different presidents! He is only the 13th man who has held this post. He is also in charge of overseeing the US Copyright Office, and appointing the US poet laureate.

A little while ago I discovered this amazing list of free technical services webinars! They cover a wide range of topics, and best of all they are free! Some of the topics covered include RDA for the Non-Cataloger, how to use specific Library of Congress Classification schedules, Disaster planning, and book repair, among many other. They even have a couple of webinars on how to preserve your personal photographs and digital memories!

Working in a small library, I’m constantly looking for new resources to learn new skills, and discover new tools, so I already know I’ll be spending a good amount of time with this collection.

Back in early November I got an email from someone wishing to use my photograph of the Paradero Para Libros Para Parques taken in Bogotá, Colombia, almost three years ago, for a book exhibit in Moscow. I was obviously interested in learning more about this project. Maria send me a few links about the “Books in Parks” projects being promoted by the government, and which wishes to showcase the idea of reading in public as a social experience. I just love seeing small libraries pop up all around the world, and seeing people respond so positively to these initiatives.

Maria recently send me some pictures of the exhibit’s opening event, and I have to admire the Muscovites who braves what looks like very cold weather to attend. You can see the event’s Facebook page here, and the full photo gallery here. The site will eventually replace THOMAS.gov, which after years of service has started showing its age. Congress.gov contains legislation from the 107th Congress (2001) to the present, member of Congress profiles from the 93rd Congress (1973) to the present, and selected member profiles from the 80th through the 92nd Congresses (1947 to 1972).

Here’s a chart showing the difference between the two tools. At the moment the only thing Congress.gov has, that THOMAS.gov doesn’t have are member profiles for the 93rd Congress (1973), plus some members from 80th to 92nd Congresses (1947 to 1972). Still, over the next few years Congress.gov will include much more than what is available on THOMAS.gov, including committee reports, nominations, treaties, Senate executive communications, House executive communications, and the Congressional Record!

Congress.gov also include a number of useful lessons on the legislative process, including information about Introduction and Referral of Bills, Bicameral Resolution, and Presidential Actions among others.

I’m looking forward to all the additional information that will be added to Congress.gov over the next few years, and I’ll certainly be using it regularly at work.

For some time my father and I have been discussing name disambiguation, and searches in Google Scholar gathering every publication by a single author. Just as we thought there was no efficient way to resolve this issue, I attended a session at AALL on Google Scholar and discovered My Citations, a new tool which aims to create the equivalent of an authority files for an individual author. My Citations prompts the user to create a profile using their Google account which will gather all of their citations together, thus helping the average users find every publication by a single author while conducting searches on the web.

At the presentation we saw the profile of Hal Varian, Google’s Chief Economist. His profile offered some very basic information about him, and a list of all his publications, and if you run a search for “Hal Varian” in Google Scholar, this profile should be your first hit.

I told my father about this and gave him some tips for setting up his own profile. Here was his response;

Le conte a mi padre acerca My Citations y le dio algunos consejos para crear su propio perfil. Esta fue respuesta;

I had a rather frustrating experience in an initial attempt to open a “Citations” account on Google Scholar. Everything was going fine: They produced an amazing list of 139 publications — all mine — including obscure CIAT Annual Report citations, a seminar I gave in about 1980, and even my MS thesis from 1971! I deleted several items that did not look like actual publications, and then when I thought I was accepting the rest, the list was suddenly reduced to only 38 publications. I was unable to discover where the other nearly 100 others disappeared to. Nor was I able to figure out how to recover the original list of 139. I could add back all the relevant publications, but am not really enthusiastic about doing it “by hand”, publication by publication, and (for each publication) adding title, authors, journal, volume, etc., etc. separately.

The Google engineer who showed us this tool did say it is still quite new, and hopefully they will iron out some of these issues soon. But if you have the time to create a complete profile with My Citations, you can help others find all of your publications easily. It seems this might be a way to help index the web in a meaningful way.

If you are able to successfully set up one of these profiles, do share your experience, and/or profile!
