I just received an email from Thabo Jakavula who shared this great site called RueFind. The site is a Google map that gathers images and information about interesting sites around the world. The map is covered in small images which you can click on to see a little more information about the site.

Starting from the homepage you can also browse through the more popular cities, and see what attractions each one offers. On the right hand side you will also find other categories to browse through such as museums, lighthouses, castles, etc. A search for libraries only yielded one result.

I really like how visual this site is and the photographs are beautiful, although I do think the descriptions of the places are a bit short. Maybe a link out to the wikipedia entry for each site would help. The coverage also heavily focuses on North American and Western Europe, with little information for the rest of the world. Still, it’s a great site, and worth visiting.

This is a participatory site and everyone can join in to help contribute images, and information.

I just discovered this cool site that help you find newspapers across the globe! Newspaper Map is very easy to use, and color coordinated to make things easy to find. The different colors of the pins represent the language of the original newspaper, and the site allows you to navigate in English, German, or Japanese.

You can begin looking for newspapers by clicking on the pins across the map. Each pin will give you the name of the newspaper, and will offer you the option of reading the site in multiple languages. And in order to get a closer look at the pins, you can zoom in on a specific region. You can also use the search box to look for specific titles, or search by address.

As I browse the site I’m finding newspapers I’ve never heard of, but I also don’t see other newspapers I do know of. The site is still in beta, so hopefully more and more newspapers will be added over time.

03/17/2011 – I’ve just been informed that there is now a version of Newspaper Map in Spanish! Access it here.

A few months ago the BBC launched a new archive of world music. During the ten years that Radio 3 has been on the air the program has been visiting people all around the world and making professional quality recording of dying folk music. The idea of this new archive is to make these recording available to a much larger public.

As I write this I’m listening to the first of two programs about Tangos. I like that the recording begins with some background information about Tangos, including some Argentina’s history, other types of music that have influence tangos, and of course there are samples of some of the most memorable songs.

You can browse the collection by program, schedule, presenters, or through this great interactive map.

You can read more about this story here.

It sometimes seems to me that the phrase “Without Borders” has become a franchise; I think the first one was Doctors Without Borders (Medecins sans Fronteires), but now there are a whole bunch of them.

Libraries Without Borders are affiliated with the French based Bibliothèques Sans Frontières and they supports “education in developing and disaster affected areas by providing children, students and adults access to well-equipped, up-to-date and efficient libraries. Access to knowledge is a key factor in social and economic development.” Both are currently working to save and rebuild Haitian libraries.

Reporters Without Borders advocate for freedom of the press, have been producing a Press Freedom Index since 2002, and which is updated yearly. (Here’s the most recent one, 2009; The Wikipedia entry is actually easier to read.)

Scientist Without Borders “aims to mobilize and coordinate science-based activities that improve quality of life in the developing world.” They have put together a database which helps users with complementary projects to find one another and collaborate. Technology Without Borders works to “develop, customize and service Information Management Systems for non-profit organizations, and educational institutions…”

Engineers Without Borders “facilitates links and collaboration among its member groups toward improving the quality of life of disadvantaged communities worldwide through education and implementation of sustainable engineering projects, while promoting new dimensions of experience for engineers, engineering students, and similarly motivated non-engineers.” Builders without Borders gathers “ecological builders who advocate the use of natural, local, and affordable materials in construction.”

Teachers Without Borders help promote free and open education by supporting “teachers in their desire to collaborate in order to address pressing community development needs.” Sociologists Without Borders encourages sociologists to “participate, democratically, with others to set standards for human wellbeing and devote our energies to understanding how to achieve these standards.”

Lawyers Without Borders works to “protect the integrity of legal process, serve the underserved, and promote the culture of pro bono service in the legal profession- all with a neutral orientation.” MBAs Without Borders believes that “business can do amazing things and when channeled appropriately, it can have an incredible lasting impact in communities.”

There are even Clowns Without Borders and Magicians Without Borders! Both work to offer laughter and magic to all persons, but especially children in refugee camps, conflict zones, and war torn areas.

Now if all of these “Without Borders” organizations would just join forces we would be well on our way to truly making an impact and helping eliminate all those social ills that keep so many in poverty, ignorance, and sickness, and which could be fix if the world’s politicians would only readjust their priorities.

There are plenty more of these and new ones will probably sprout up before I hit “publish”, so here’s a small sampling of a few more. Theatre Without Borders / Designers Without Borders / Acupuncturist Without Borders / Soccer Without Borders / Astronomers Without Borders / Chemists Without Borders / Cinema Without Borders / Executives Without Borders / Friends Without Borders / Bees Without Borders

The project has been in the works for about 4 years now, and was initially conceived by James Billington of the USA Library of Congress (LOC), and developed by UNESCO and LOC. The site will function in seven languages and will showcase digital treasures from around the globe and throughout the ages. It is hoped that the site will help promote international understanding and expand non-English, non-Western content online.

This really is a fascinating collection. You can search it by geographic region, time period, topic, holding institution, and type of item. While looking you’ll find old photographs, curated videos, detailed explanations of the items, and links to share these treasures through some of the most commons web 2.0 venues, such as Facebook and Twitter.

You can read the full review I wrote about this project on October 18, 2007 here.

360 Cities is a great site that allows you to see all 360 degrees of over 50 cities around the world. Well you don’t actually get to see every corner of the cities, but you do see major streets and attractions. Cities in this project are mostly European cities, with a number of places in Asia, and I’m sorry to say, hardly anything in Latin America (only Merida, Venezuela and La Havana, Cuba). Still the views you do get are very impressive, and it provides a great way to “travel” without leaving home.

Navigation is done through a combination of a Google map and images taken by VR (Virtual Reality) photographers. The site encourages VR photographers from around the world to become involved with the project in order to continue growing the site.

Image info here.

The Commonwealth of Learning (COL) is a collaboration, started in 1989, of the 53 Commonwealth head’s of state to promote open and distance learning (ODL), as well as sharing resources and technologies. COL works with government officials to promote information and communication technologies (ICT) as a means to impact the areas of education, learning for livelihoods, and human environment.

One of the projects launched by the COL is the WikiEducator, a website that gathers people who believe education should be free and available to all. They aim at helping users plan, and develop educational projects, especially those based on free content. Through their Learning4Content program they are working at conducting workshops, train educators, and develop free educational content. At times all of this work is done virtually, other times participants have been able to meet to collaborate.

COL also helped coordinate the development of a Virtual University for Small States of the Commonwealth (VUSSC). During its initial stage, the VUSSC will focus on creating courses in Tourism and Hospitality, and Small Business Management.

The COL understands that millions of children worldwide have no access to basic education, and many more are taught by poorly trained teachers, and study in schools with few resources. Estimates are that about a billion adults worldwide are illiterate, or have received a very rudimentary education. And while COL focuses on the Commonwealth countries, it aims to help improve opportunities for all adults, children and the generations to come.

I truly love the “radical” idea behind these projects, that education should be free and accessible to all! May the Commonwealth of Learning continue with many more great projects!

Image info here.
