A couple of weeks ago IFLA released its latest World Report, and for the first time made it available online in a fully searchable database, including a graphical map interface! You can download the full report, or use the maps to select only the sections you are interested in. One of the maps allows you to browse the report by country, viewing either the full country’s report, portions of it, or comparing several countries at the time.

The question oriented map allows you to access information from a single question for all the countries on the 2010 report. The questions cover six major sections; Introduction, Estimated Number of Libraries, Libraries and the Internet, Legal Issues, Social Issues, and Ethics and IFLA Initiatives. Each section is further subdivided. Some of the subdivisions include “Women and Freedom of Access to Information,” “Libraries and Environmental Sustainability,” “User Privacy and Anti-terror legislation,” “Digital Divide,” and “Violations of Intellectual Freedom” among many others.

Take a look at the full report or the sections that interest you most, it’s full of interesting information.

Hace un par de semanas IFLA publicó su último Informe Mundial y por primera vez esta disponible en línea en una base de datos completa que permite hacer búsquedas, ¡e incluyendo un interfaz de mapa! Puede descargar el informe completo, o utilizar los mapas para seleccionar sólo las secciones que le interesen. Uno de los mapas le permite navegar el informe por país, dándole la opción de ver el informe completo de un país, ver solo parte de ellos o comparar simultáneamente cierta información sobre varios países.

El otro mapa le permite ver la información por tema ofreciéndole las respuestas de una sola pregunta para todos los países incluidos en el informe de 2010. Las preguntas abarcan seis secciones: Introducción, Número estimado de Bibliotecas, Bibliotecas e Internet, Asuntos Legales, Asuntos Sociales y Ética y de las iniciativas de IFLA. Cada sección se subdivide. Algunas de las subdivisiones incluyen “La mujer y la Libertad de Acceso a la Información”, “Las bibliotecas y la Sostenibilidad Ambiental”, “Privacidad para usuarios y la legislación anti-terrorista”, “Brecha Digital” y “Violaciónes de los Derechos de Libertad”, entre muchos otros.

Take a look at this nice video about a pub in Yorkshire Dales, UK, which has begun offering library services! What a clever idea. The folks behind this clever project do clarify that volunteer services such as their cannot replace formal libraries, since it is the volunteer services of professional librarians, and the collections they manage that help support these smaller satellite projects.

Echa un vistazo a este vídeo de un bar en Yorkshire Dales, Reino Unido, ¡que ha comenzado a ofrecer servicios de biblioteca! Idea que resulta muy acertada. La gente detrás de este ingenioso proyecto aclara que los servicios voluntarios tales como este no pueden remplazar a las bibliotecas formales, ya que es el servicio voluntario de bibliotecarios profesionales y las colecciones que manejan que apoyan ayudar a estos pequeños proyectos satélites.

Tomorrow a group of librarians and library enthusiast from around the world will try to make the hashtag #biblioteca one of the Trending Topics on Twitter. The event will take place August 10, 2010 and will last an hour (10-11am EST).

This experiment was conducted exactly a year ago, and they almost achieve their goal, so hopefully this time they will make it.

08\10\2010 – Mission accomplished, #biblioteca was among the top ten Trending topics on Twitter today!

Mañana un grupo de bibliotecarios y un entusiasta de las bibliotecas alrededor del mundo intentaran hacer que el hashtag #biblioteca sea uno de los “trending topics” (temas del momento) en Twitter. El evento se llevará a cabo el 10 de agosto 2010 y tendrá una duración de una hora (10-11am hora del este- EEUU).

Este experimento se llevó a cabo hace exactamente un año, y casi lograr su objetivo, así que espero que esta vez lo logren.

Mun2.0 “Vibración Positiva y Conocimiento” is a brand new radio program dedicated to the world of information and its management. The program is created and hosted by a group of library science students and professionals from La Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá. The first program aired last Monday, beginning with a broad background discussion on the history of information management, and included two interviews with information professionals.

The second program will air Monday, August 9th, and I will be one of the two people interviewed. We talked about how I got into the library world, this blog, and what I believe new information professionals needs in order to be successful in the field.

The program airs Monday morning from 7:30 – 8:00 local time (Bogotá). Find out what your local time is with this handy tool, The World Time Zone. You can listen to the program online through the Javeriana Estereo website, and things are in the works to soon offer the program online.

You can also follow them on Facebook, read their blog, or follow them on Twitter. Keep in mind that the entire program is in Spanish. Stay tuned for the next program!

Mun2.0 “Vibración Positiva y Conocimiento” es un programa radial nuevo dedicado al mundo de la información y su gestión. El programa es creado y organizado por un grupo de estudiantes y profesionales de ciencia de la información, bibliotecología de la Pontificia Universidad Javeriana en Bogotá. El primer programa salió al aire el lunes pasado, comenzando con una discusión de fondo amplio sobre la historia del manejo de la información, e incluyó dos entrevistas con profesionales en el campo.

El segundo programa saldrá al aire el lunes, 09 de agosto, y yo soy una de dos personas entrevistadas. Hablamos de cómo empece en el mundo de la bibliotecologia, este blog, y mi opinión sobre lo que creo que todo nuevo profesional necesita para tener éxito en el campo.

El programa se transmite los lunes por la mañana de 7:30am – 8:00am, hora local (Bogotá). Averigüe a que hora lo puede escuchar con esta práctica herramienta, The World Time Zone. Puede escuchar el programa en línea a través de la página web de Javeriana Estéreo, y el grupo ya esta tramitando todo para ofrecer el programa en la web.

On that same SALALM panel titled “Documenting in Times of Adversity, Survival and Hope” my friend Lynn Shirey presented on a newly acquired collection of slides by photographer Andrés Romero Spethman, documenting Chilean Protest Murals during the dictatorship of Gen. Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990). The collection was recently purchased by Harvard and is currently available online for everyone to use.

In many cases these slides are the only record left of many of these murals, since they were quickly painted over by the regime. The murals document people’s anger, frustration and cries for help during the dictatorship.

While going through the collection you are likely to find many a familiar face, including Pablo Neruda, Gabriela Mistral, Víctor Jara, president Salvador Allende, and many other famous Chileans.

En ese mismo panel de SALALM titulado “La documentación en tiempos de adversidad, supervivencia y esperanza” mi amiga Lynn Shirey presentó sobre una colección de diapositivas por el fotógrafo Andrés Romero Spethman, recién adquiridas documentando los Murales de Protesta Chilenos durante la dictadura del general Augusto Pinochet (1973 – 1990). La colección fue adquirida recientemente por Harvard y actualmente está disponible en línea para uso de todos.

En muchos casos estas diapositivas son el único registro que queda de estos murales ya que fueron borrados con rapidez por el régimen. Los murales documentan la indignación del pueblo, su frustración y sus gritos de socorro durante la dictadura.

Mientras mira la colección seguro encontrara más de una cara conocida, incluyendo a Pablo Neruda, Gabriela Mistral, Víctor Jara, el presidente Salvador Allende, y muchos otros chilenos famosos.

Con ganas de celebrar el bicentenario de Colombia aquí recojo información sobre algunos eventos y colecciones que se han organizado en Colombia y virtualmente. ¡A celebrar se dijo!

El proyecto Libro al Viento se ha asociado con la Biblioteca Luis Ángel Arango (BLAA) para traer varias biografías sobre los grandes de Colombia al público en general. A diferencia de otras publicaciones, esta colección de bicentenario también se ofrece en formato digital. Los tres títulos de la colección son,“¡Viva la Pola!”, “¡Soy Caldas!” y “La antorcha brillante” (biografía de Antonio Nariño).

La BLAA también está organizando otros eventos que se llevan a cabo en la biblioteca. Si visita la BLAA encontrara varias exposiciones sobre el bicentenario, incluyendo “Palabras que nos cambiaron: lenguaje y poder en la independencia”, “La caricatura en Colombia a partir de la independencia” (esta incluye recorrido virtual), y “Habeas Corpus: que tengas [un] cuerpo [para exponer].” La biblioteca también organiza el XV Congreso Colombia de Historia que se llevara a cado del 26 al 30 de julio de 2010. Además tiene otra página que recoge artículos sobre la independencia de Colombia y otros países suramericanos. Y como si todo esto no fuera suficiente también tiene un blog donde están recogiendo noticias sobre más eventos del bicentenario.

El ministerio de cultura también tiene una cantidad de eventos programados, al igual que una cantidad de colecciones en línea que están disponibles para todos. Vea aquí 200 años de historia Colombiana, escuche la música que hemos gozado por dos siglos. Vea los Diálogos de la Independencia; aquí encontrara una seria de videos por tema de una cantidad de historiadores tratando varios temas de la historia Colombiana. 1810: Independencias al Aire recoge 22 capítulos de una serie radial recrea algunos de hechos históricos y de cotidianidad Colombiana. La pagina titulada Centros Municipales de Memorias tiene un mapa interactivo que le dará mas información sobre las celebraciones que se llevan a cabo en cada localidad. La Línea de Tiempo le mostrara imágenes y otra información de los últimos doscientos años, década por década. La Agenda de Celebraciones le dará más información sobre 32 eventos que se llevan a cado a lo largo y ancho de la nación.

El sistema de BiblioRed está organizando un ciclo de conferencia que trata nuestra historia, y algunas que tratan la historia de las comunidades indígenas. Todas con entrada libre. El Museo Nacional monto una cantidad de colecciones en línea que tratan el tema del bicentenario. Aquí encontrara Carteles, cartillas, y radio. Y aquí hay una lista de los eventos que se llevan a cabo en Bogotá.

Eager to celebrate the Colombia’s bicentenary I’ve gather some information about events and collections that have been organized in Colombia and virtually. Let the celebrations begin!

The Project Libro al Viento has partnered with the Luis Ángel Arango Library (BLAA) to bring several biographies of the great men and women of Colombia to the general public. Unlike other publications, this bicentennial collection will also be offered in digital format. The three titles in the collection are, “¡Viva la Pola!”, “¡Soy Caldas!” y “La antorcha brillante” (biografía de Antonio Nariño). The BLAA is also organizing other events that are being held in the library. If you visit the BLAA you’ll find several exhibitions on the bicentennial, including “Palabras que nos cambiaron: lenguaje y poder en la independencia”, “La caricatura en Colombia a partir de la independencia” (this includes a virtual tour), and “Habeas Corpus: que tengas [un] cuerpo [para exponer].” The library also organizes the XV Congress on Colombian History that market will take 26 to July 30, 2010. It also has another site that features articles on the independence of Colombia and other South American countries. As if all this were not enough it also has a blog where you can get more news about other events of the bicentennial.

The Ministry of Culture also has a number of scheduled events, as well as a number of online collections that are available to everyone. See here for 200 years of Colombian history, listen to the music we’ve enjoyed for two centuries. See Diálogos de la Independencia, here you will find a series of videos by subject of a number of historians discussing various topics in Colombian history. 1810: Independencias al Aire contains 22 chapters of a radio series which recreates some of the historical facts and daily realities which make up our history. The page entitled Centros Municipales de Memorias has an interactive map that will give you more information on the celebrations that take place in each location. The Línea de Tiempo will show images and information of the last two hundred years, decade by decade. The Agenda de Celebraciones will give you more information on 32 events that are taking place across the nation.

The BiblioRed system is organizing a series of conference on our history, some dealing with the history of indigenous communities. Admission to all these conferences is free. The National Museum mounted a number of online collections that address the bicentennial. Here you will find posters, brochures, and radio audio. And here is a list of events that are taking place in Bogotá.

At the beginning of the month I was in Montreal and got to visit La Grande Bibliothèque! This library is one of the city’s largest public libraries, and the collection is part of the Library and National Archives of Québec. I presume that since this region of Canada includes a vibrant separatist movement they feel the need to have their own national library and archives.  Politics aside, library holds about 4 millions items, most of which are in French, and 30% in English. This library is one of the most popular libraries in the francophone world, and I when I visited on a Sunday, the place really was full of people.

On their website the library breakups their various collections with brief explanations of what you may expect to find. They have a large collection covering Quebec’s Heritage, archives that date back to the 17th century, resources for genealogical work, maps, government publications, and material which has been digitized, including an RSS for the most recent additions to this collection.

The library also offers many of the usual services you would expect from a large public library; they have a calendar of events which includes a number of activities for small children, guided tours of the library in French or English, computer workshops, and ongoing exhibitions.

¡A principios del mes estuve en Montreal y pude visitar La Grande Bibliothèque! Esta biblioteca es una de las bibliotecas públicas mas grandes de la ciudad y la colección es parte de la Biblioteca y Archivos Nacionales de Québec. Supongo que como esta región de Canadá incluye un movimiento separatista vibrante que deben sentir la necesidad de tener su propia biblioteca y archivos nacionales. Política aparte, la biblioteca cuenta con cerca de 4 millones de artículos, la mayoría de los cuales están en francés y 30% en Inglés. Esta biblioteca es una de las colecciones más populares en el mundo de habla francesa, y el domingo que estuve de visita, el lugar realmente estaba lleno de gente.

En su sitio web de la biblioteca separa sus diversas colecciones con una breve explicación de lo que usted puede encontrar en cada una. Tienen una gran colección que abarca el Patrimonio de Québec, archivos que se remontan al siglo 17, recursos para el trabajo de genealogía, mapas, publicaciones gubernamentales, y material que ha sido digitalizado, incluyendo un RSS para las adiciones más recientes a esta colección.

La biblioteca también ofrece muchos de los servicios habituales que cabría esperar de una gran biblioteca pública; tienen un calendario de eventos que incluye una serie de actividades para los más pequeños, visitas guiadas a la biblioteca en francés o en Inglés, talleres de computación, y exposiciones en curso.

I’ve recently become a member of the ANSS (Anthropology and Social Sciences) committee on Subject and Bibliographic Access (previous post on the group), and at our meeting while at ALA, I signed up to work on the group’s wikies and index (one covers Q&A, and the other covers New Subject Headings). Basically the committee focuses on LCSH from the field of Anthropology and Sociology, and we try to spread the knowledge through a wiki which gathers questions we work on.

Every month we come up with questions that relate to these fields and then find many of the LCSH that would be appropriate to use when searching and cataloging material on this subject. The value of this works lies in harnessing the knowledge of librarians who have been working with this material for years, some even decades. And knowing the appropriate terminology is no small feat, specially when the Library of Congress often insists on using archaic terms. The upcoming questions between now and next ALA will be covering topics related to Caribbean Culture; how to qualify generic series uniform titles; oil spills and the human impact on the environment; Psychological Anthropology; Islamic Studies; and an overview to RDA.

Recientemente soy miembro del comité de ANSS (Antropología y Ciencias Sociales) y de acceso bibliográficos (post anterior sobre el grupo). En nuestra reunión durante la ALA me inscribí para ayudar con el wikies del grupo y el índice (uno cubre preguntas y respuestas, y el otro abarca nuevos encabezamientos). Básicamente el comité se enfoca a LCSH (encabezamientos de la Biblioteca del Congreso) del campo de la Antropología y Sociología, y tratamos de difundir el conocimiento a través de un wiki que reúne las preguntas que trabajamos.

Cada mes tratamos una pregunta que se relaciona con estas áreas de estudio y a continuación encontramos muchos de los LCSH que sería apropiado utilizar a la hora de buscar y catalogar material de este tema. El valor de esta obra radica en el aprovechamiento de los conocimientos de bibliotecarios que han estado trabajando con este material desde hace años, algunos incluso décadas. Y conociendo la terminología adecuada no es poca cosa especialmente cuando la Biblioteca del Congreso con frecuencia insiste en el uso de términos arcaicos. Las preguntas a ser tratadas en los próximos 6 meses se cubren temas relacionados con la cultura caribeña, cómo aclarar títulos uniformes de serie genéricos , derrames de petróleo y el impacto humano sobre el medio ambiente; Psicológica Antropología; Estudios Islámicos, y una visión general del RDA.

Latest ANSS meeting originally appeared on Bilingual Librarian on July 8, 2010.

A few weeks ago I noticed another blog (Alabama Library Expo) has been scrapping content off my blog and adding it to theirs and I’d like it to stop – NOW! I’ve tried contacting the site, but have received no response.  I suspect this is being done through automated scrapping and not by an actual human being. I’ve found a number of blog entries discussing the matter, some pointing to specific WordPress plugins which should prevent scrapping, but I haven’t found one yet that actually works.

I notice that some sites are being scrapped unsuccessfully, instead of being able to add the full content of an entry, all the other site is able to get is a link back to the original source. The only common thread I can find for these sites is that they are all using the free version of WordPress. If they can do this, then it must be possible. I’ve already tried contacting a couple of the sites that have been able to protect their content but it seems that they haven’t added anything special to prevent plagiarisms, it must be something that automatically comes with the free version of WordPress.

If you know how to fix this, please help me out!

If you have a library blog you might want to check the Alabama Library Expo to see if your material is being scrapped as well.

And while we are on the subject here are a few very useful tools I have found in the process;

Copyscrape – this will show you who is re-posting your content. There are a few other similar tools out there, but they don’t work very well.

Who.is – will tell you who owns the site in question. Here’s the information for my problem site.

Here is a very complete article on how to manage a plagiarist.

Hace unas semanas me di cuenta de otro blog (Alabama Library Expo) ha estado robándose el contenidos de mi blog y lo está agregando al de ellos; y me gustaría que esto pare – AHORA! He intentado contactar al sitio pero no han recibido. Sospecho que esto se está haciendo mediante “scrapping” automatizado y no por un ser humano real. He encontrado un número de entradas de blog de tratan el asunto, algunos señalaron a determinados plugins de WordPress que debe proteger el contenido pero no he encontrado ninguno que realmente funcione.

Me he dado cuenta que algunos sitios no los han podido copiar exitosamente. En vez de añadir el contenido completo de una entrada, lo único que el otro sitio es capaz de conseguir es un enlace a la fuente original. El único elemento común que encuentro para estos sitios es que están utilizando la versión gratuita de WordPress. Si ellos pueden hacer esto, entonces debe ser posible proteger cualquier contenido. Ya he tratado de contactar a un par de sitios que han sido capaces de proteger su contenido pero parece que no han agregado nada especial para evitar ser plagiados, debe ser algo que automáticamente viene con la versión gratuita de WordPress.

¡Si usted sabe cómo solucionar este problema, por favor ayúdeme!

Y ya que estamos tratando este tema, aquí hay algunas herramientas muy útiles que he encontrado en el proceso;

Copyscrape – esto le mostrará que sitios están republicando su contenido. Hay algunas otras herramientas similares por ahí, pero no funcionan muy bien.

Who.is – le dirá quién es el dueño del sitio en cuestión. Aquí está la información del sitio con el que tengo este problema.

Can Fox News really be this detached from reality? Apparently so. Here’s the headline to one of their recent stories; “Are Libraries Necessary, or a Waste of Tax Money?” The report has so little substance I don’t understand how Anna Dalvates, the author, can even pretend this is actual news, or that tax dollars spent on the library can be a waste of money. Clearly Dalventes hasn’t visited her local library and time soon, nor hasn’t read any of the articles which explain the benefit of a library to the community, or how during difficult economic times, usages increases (here is just one example of many).

But, not to worry, her audience clearly realizes this woman is totally out of touch with reality. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and read the comment!

¿Puede ser cierto que Fox News este tan despegado de la realidad? Parece que sí. Este es el título de una de sus historias recientes, “¿Son las bibliotecas necesarias, o una pérdida de dinero de los impuestos?” El informe tiene tan poca sustancia que no entiendo cómo Anna Dalvates, la autora, puede pretender que esto es una noticia real, o que los impuestos que se destinen a la biblioteca puedan ser una pérdida de dinero. Es evidente que Dalventes hace mucho que no visita su biblioteca, ni no ha leído alguno de los artículos que demuestran los beneficios de una biblioteca a la comunidad, o cómo durante tiempos económicos difíciles se aumenta el uso de estas (he aquí sólo un ejemplo de muchos).

Pero no se preocupen, su público se da cuenta claramente que esta mujer está totalmente fuera de contacto con la realidad. Desplácese hasta la parte inferior de la página y la los comentario!
