This morning, bright and early, I attended an ALA Midwinter Conference session hosted by OCLC titled “Redesigning Technical Services Workflows.” The session was composed of three presenters, two of which shared their experiences on how their technical services departments are adapting to decreased budgets and new technology trends. The third presenter, Ruth Fischer (R2 Consulting), discussed a report she helped create which discussed the creation and use of bibliographic records in North America.

The main point of this presentation is that libraries all across North America are duplicating each others work when we could be working together to maximize the creation of bib. records for benefit of us all. Her presentation included some shocking numbers. The report concluded that there are about 34,000 original catalogers in North America, and that if each one cataloged only one item a day, every work day, that would produce 6 million new records a year! These numbered followed her pointing out that most libraries have growing backlogs! It seems most libraries are instructing the catalogers to bring in records from institutions like OCLC, alter them in the local catalog, and then not re-share the new record. This process is being repeated over and over in libraries all over the region.

The presentation went on to address the fact that many non-library users are starting to gather much of the information gathers in these MARC records and either using it for other purposes, or reselling it! And in a systems where the Library of Congress (LOC) ends up creating many of these records and them making them available to the library community at large, the LOC is basically subsidizing everyone’s cataloging, libraries, and non-libraries alike.

I’m not sure how we are going to get all, or even most libraries to start working more collaboratively, but I do know that we need to get working on this, instead of spending, who knows how many more years duplicating each others work.

For more information read the full report here, and visit the online group that was created to help facilitate gathering information for the report. Today’s event was recorded; I’ll link to the recording when it’s up.

Today I spent the day at the Library of Congress and loved it. I was there with my mother and brother and we took one of the guided tours of the building. This tour starts off with a short movie including a number of brief interviews with some of the librarians who highlight many of the treasures in the collection. The tour focuses more of the history of the library, and explain a good amount of the art found on the walls of the building, but doesn’t say much about the library’s holdings.

As a very brief recap; the library was established in 1800 by an act of Congress and was originally housed inside the Capitol building. In August of 1814 British troops set fire to the building, destroying the entire collection. Shortly thereafter, former president Thomas Jefferson offered to sell his entire collection to rebuild the library. Congress decides to buy his collection and begin to redevelop the library. This original collection is on display, and still in use.

In case you haven’t heard, the USA doesn’t technically have a national library, instead the Library of Congress (LOC) fills this role. And while the library works for the needs of Congress, they work to collect on all things USA related and their collections include millions of items from around the world. As the country’s legal deposit the LOC holds of copy of every single book published in the USA, and any book published abroad that has been translated for the USA market.

From the millions of items the LOC holds they have some of the most amazing collections in the country. The American Folklife Center gathers audio recordings on pretty much every posible topic, they collect and produce reading material for the blind and physically handicapped, American Memory provides access to many of their holdings related to American history in a variety of formats, THOMAS was launched in 1995 to make available legislation information, they also participate in the World Digital Library.

The LOC also has a lot of free resources for librarians. You can browse through their OPAC, search through their Authorities files, look through their Print & Photographs, and listen through their Sound Inventory. There is also the handy Z39.50 which allows you to run simultaneous searches through their catalogs and several other libraries around the globe.

All in all it was a great visit, even through it including a minor scare due to a suspected gunman in the area. The library was briefly locked down, but 30 minutes later we were on our way again. Before leaving the library we did see the oldest known map where the American continent is named as such, and a draft to the Declaration of Independence!

If you are in DC stop by and visit the library, and if you are elsewhere take a look at their countless resources online. And keep in mind that on top of everything you’ll find at their website, they also have a Flickr account, and an account on Youtube.

OPAC

The European Library portal can help you search the online catalogs to all the major libraries in the European Union. The project originates from the TEL-project which was set up as a cooperative framework that would facilitate access to all the major national and deposit collection from Europe’s national libraries. The European Library is financed by the Conference of European National Librarians (CENL).

The site offers users a variety of options when searching material. You can search as you would in any other OPAC, you can browse by country, or by library. The site also functions in about two dozen languages, although this does not mean the results will be in the language of your choice. This is because The European Library only serves as en intermediate to the variety of libraries that compose it, so the results you see are in the catalog for the library which own is. This means that to get the full experience with all these wonderful collections you would have to read many of the major European languages. Still, there are plenty of collections in English, and even if you can’t read all the instructions, I’m sure you can click away and find some interesting material. You can also try asking for help to find a specific item.

Take a look, there is an amazing array of collections on almost every topic to enjoy, including posters, journals, music, poetry, photography, atlases, cartoons, portraits, and more.

I was just reading an article from The Chronicle of Higher Education on library catalogs. The article starts off by mentioning a student who was having a hard time finding the material she wanted at her local university library. The discussion then continues by claiming that OPACs are loosing users because some people find them hard to use. They then continue to describe a few new developments in library OPACs, some commercial and some developed as open source.

The article does a basic job at explaining the fundamentals of a discussion that has been going on in the library for years, and one where the parties involved often cannot agree. But Marc Parry, the article’s author, seems to have forgotten to include a couple librarians in this discussion. Luckily many diligent librarians have found the article already and are happily “commenting” away on it.

One diligent commenter explained that OPACs do no function as Google, and in my opinion, they each serve different roles. mitt4jp wrote;

I found this article a little mis-leading. First of all, a library catalog is structured differently from a search engine. To find items about Thomas Jefferson, the correct way is to use “Thomas Jefferson” as a subject, not as keywords [anywhere] search.

Unfortunately, instead of teaching students how to conduct a precise search with few relevant results, faculty and librarians have found an easy way out — googlize everything.

I think one of the main issues in this discussion is who our users are. Someone who is looking for something good to read for leisure might benefit from a simpler interface, maybe one with just one search box, sort of like Google. But someone who needs a very specific item will likely need a sharper tool.

The other issue in this discussion is information literacy, meaning, do you have the skills you need to find the information you are looking for? I remember having to take a required course in library literacy for my undergrad. I remembered being rather intimidated with the process when I first walked into the session, but I also remember leaving in total amazement and fascination.

How about you come to your own conclusions? Harvard currently runs two OPACs, one catalog has many of the new features currently in vogue, and the sturdy old catalog that has been around for years. What are you using it for? And most importantly, are you finding what you are looking for?

Thank you to Marcel for pointing out this article.

Un comentarista explicó que los catálogos en linear no están diseñador para funcionar como Google, y en mi opinión, cada uno cumple una función diferente. mitt4jp escribió;

The Red de Bibliotecas will provide you with all the information you may need about the network of libraries in the Medellín area. The main page regularly posts related stories, news updates, and other relevant items.

Along the left hand side you can find links that will give you a better idea of the services offered by this library network. Under “Bibliotecas” you’ll find basic contact information and location to the participating libraries. The link for “Bibliotecólogos” provides a space for library professionals to share resources, tips, and other relevant information. They also have a brand new blog that serves the same purpose of sharing resources. “Cinéfilos” gather information about movies being screed around the city, either at libraries or as part of film festivals. There are also links for cultural events, and multimedia projects. These multimedia projects are really good, and most tell stories about the region. “Pinacoteca” share art created by Colombian artists.

Alongside the top of the page you can find links to the region’s shared OPAC, their Virtual Library which offers access to online encyclopedias, journals, and links to many other digital initiatives around the country and throughout the Spanish speaking world. There is also a map which plots out the location of all these libraries, and provides you with contact information.

This is a very well planed and organized site. I encourage you to spend some time exploring it because chances are you’ll find something of interest.

The Biblioteca Digital Colombiana (Colombia’s Digital Library) is up and running (in beta). This service will allow you to search the OPACs of various educational institutions with one query. Work on this portal started back in 2002, with the collaboration of 13 local universities, with later help from Colciencias, the Ministry of Education, and RENATA.

When conducting a search you’ll find one search box, but you can narrow down results by type of material, or holding institution.

The site also offers links to similar projects in other Latin American countries, as well as documentation on digital libraries in general.

Papi, thank you for pointing this out.

Financial advice at the public library? Apparently so. As unstable and scary as the financial landscape appears these days all of us seem to be looking for advice where we can find it. Smart investing@your library® initiative, a partnership between FINRA (Financial Industry Regulatory Authority) Investor Education Foundation and ALA (American Library Association) has established a number of grants to help libraries establish programs that will help the community learn about the economy. And let’s be clear, the librarians establishing these programs are not going to tell you what stock to buy, but they will help you learn about the larger system at play, how to keep track of new developments, and other general trends.

FINRA believes public libraries are an obvious place for these programs because they can reach so many people in the community, and so far the programs are getting good reviews. Newton Public Library, in Newton, MA used their grant money to set up a retirement planning club for women, back in 2008. The group initially provided a space for women of all ages to get together and discuss the larger economic situation, talk about the options they had, and serve as a support group to each other. Over time, the group has continued to grow, now including a number of men as well.

Interestingly these grant were started over two years ago, appearing to have been ahead of the curve which brought us this crisis. During 2009 this partnership has invested $882,000 in grants which were be offered to 12 recipients, who in turn have established different programs, some geared towards women, immigrant families, youth, seniors, or low-income families;

Es interesante que estas subvenciones se iniciaran hace dos años, al parecen anticipando esta crisis. En el 2009 esta asociación ha invertido 882.000 dólares en donaciones que fueron a ofrecer a 12 beneficiarios, que a su vez han creado diferentes programas algunos orientados hacia las mujeres, las familias de inmigrantes, jóvenes, personas mayores, o familias de bajos ingresos;

A few days ago OCLC and Google Books created a partnership that will allow uses of both services to benefit, and better locate library material. OCLC member libraries who already have agreements with Google Books will now be able to make their MARC records available through Google, which will increase the visibility of material. Basically this partnership will allow users of the web to search for books and other library material be guided towards specific library catalogs, which will then provide full access to books that are already part of Google Books. Ideally this set up will drive up traffic for libraries both online and in person. Web users will be able to access full text books from home, but those who wish to borrow the books will be able to see local libraries’ holding.

You can read OCLCs press release on the matter here.
