Schlesinger Library houses a fascinating collection of Women in American History. Here’s just a tiny example of the wonders they have, Thirty-five portraits of circus animal trainers, primarily lions, other big cats and elephants, postcards; photographs.

Twice a year the Library of Congress open the doors of the Main Reading Room to the public. I was there last weekend and loved it. In addition to seeing the gorgeous room, there were also plenty of librarians at hand answering questions about the building and the many extraordinary services they offer.

Dos veces al año la Biblioteca del Congreso abre las puertas de su  principal sala de lectura al público. Estuve allí la semana pasada y me encantó. Además de ver el salón que es precioso, también habían un montón de bibliotecarios presentas, todos atendiendo preguntas sobre el edificio y los muchos servicios extraordinarios que ofrecen.

Here’s a great documentary about the Library of Congress which C-SPAN has made available for free! The documentary is an hour and a half and showcases the marvels of the collection, including many interesting stories about specific items, and the Jefferson building. If you have already visited the LOC this documentary will give you lots of additional information and closeup views of the art in the buildings and the treasures of the collection. If you haven’t been to the LOC yet, this documentary will certainly whet you appetite.

Aquí hay un gran documental sobre la Biblioteca del Congreso que C-SPAN ha puesto a disposición de forma gratuita! El documental dura hora y media y muestra las maravillas de la colección, incluyendo muchas historias interesantes sobre piezas específicas, y el edificio Jefferson. Si ya ha visitado el LOC este documental le dará mucha más información y le permitirá ver de cerca el arte y detalles del edificios y los tesoros de la colección. I just received an email from Thabo Jakavula who shared this great site called RueFind. The site is a Google map that gathers images and information about interesting sites around the world. The map is covered in small images which you can click on to see a little more information about the site.

Acabo de recibir un correo electrónico de Thabo Jakavula quien me compartió este gran sitio web llamado RueFind. El sitio es un mapa de Google que recoge imágenes e información sobre sitios de interés en todo el mundo. El mapa está cubierto de pequeñas imágenes sobre las que puedes hacer clic para ver un poco más de información sobre el sitio.

Starting from the homepage you can also browse through the more popular cities, and see what attractions each one offers. On the right hand side you will also find other categories to browse through such as museums, lighthouses, castles, etc. A search for libraries only yielded one result.

A partir de la página principal también se puede navegar a través de las ciudades más populares y ver lo que cada una ofrece en atracciones. Al lado derecho también encontrará otras categorías tales como museos, faros, castillos, etc. Una búsqueda de bibliotecas sólo se dio un resultado.

I really like how visual this site is and the photographs are beautiful, although I do think the descriptions of the places are a bit short. Maybe a link out to the wikipedia entry for each site would help. The coverage also heavily focuses on North American and Western Europe, with little information for the rest of the world. Still, it’s a great site, and worth visiting.

A mi me gusta que este sitio es tan visual y las fotos son hermosas, aunque yo creo que las descripciones de los lugares son un poco cortas. Tal vez un enlace a la entrada de Wikipedia para cada sitio ayudaría. La cobertura se enfoca en gran medida en América del Norte y Europa Occidental, con poca información sobre el resto del mundo. Aún así es un gran sitio y vale la pena visitarlo.

Some of the information you can find on the site include publications from previous conferences, a map of clandestine detention centers in Argentina, a calendar of events including photographic exhibits documenting human rights in Latin America, and an online forum that you can join for free after filling in an online form.

There is also a digital library which includes photographs, videos, audio, manuscripts and iconography that create memory about human rights in Latin America.

The site functions in Spanish and English.

Sitios de Memoria en América Latina reúne información producido por las 27 organizaciones de países latinoamericanos que hacen parte de la Coalición Internacional de Sitios de Conciencia, sobre de los derechos humanos en toda América Latina. Los países latinoamericanos que participan son principalmente del Cono Sur y América Central, con una notable ausencia de los países andinos.

Parte de la información que puede encontrar en el sitio incluyen publicaciones de conferencias anteriores, un mapa de centros de detención clandestinos en Argentina, un calendario de eventos, incluyendo exposiciones fotográficas que documentan los derechos humanos en América Latina, y un foro en línea al que puede unirse de forma gratuita después de llenar un formulario en línea.

También hay una biblioteca digital que incluye fotografiás, videos, audio, manuscritos e iconografía que hacen memoria a la situación de los derechos humanos en Latinoamérica.

La Base de datos de la Ruta de la Seda de Yale recoge más de 6.000 imágenes tomadas por toda la región de la Ruta de la Seda por los profesores durante varias visitas entre 2006 y 2009. Las visitas fueron dirigidos por Mimi Hall Yiengpruksawan (Profesora de Historia del Arte) con la ayuda del Consejo de Estudios de Asia Oriental en la Universidad de Yale. In many cases these slides are the only record left of many of these murals, since they were quickly painted over by the regime. The murals document people’s anger, frustration and cries for help during the dictatorship.

While going through the collection you are likely to find many a familiar face, including Pablo Neruda, Gabriela Mistral, Víctor Jara, president Salvador Allende, and many other famous Chileans.

En ese mismo panel de SALALM titulado “La documentación en tiempos de adversidad, supervivencia y esperanza” mi amiga Lynn Shirey presentó sobre una colección de diapositivas por el fotógrafo Andrés Romero Spethman, recién adquiridas documentando los Murales de Protesta Chilenos durante la dictadura del general Augusto Pinochet (1973 – 1990). La colección fue adquirida recientemente por Harvard y actualmente está disponible en línea para uso de todos.

En muchos casos estas diapositivas son el único registro que queda de estos murales ya que fueron borrados con rapidez por el régimen. Los murales documentan la indignación del pueblo, su frustración y sus gritos de socorro durante la dictadura.

Mientras mira la colección seguro encontrara más de una cara conocida, incluyendo a Pablo Neruda, Gabriela Mistral, Víctor Jara, el presidente Salvador Allende, y muchos otros chilenos famosos.
