A few days ago I received an email from someone at SR Education Group showing me a  site they have put together on free online courses. I’d never heard of this group before so I did a bit of research and found out they are an online marketing company that works for online universities and other educational institutions that have online components. With this bit of background information in mind, here are my views on Online Courses.

OnlineCourses.net gathers information from a multitude of online venues which offer educational material for free! The site is well organized, grouping courses by subject area (Biology, Engineering, Foreign Languages, Mathematics, Social Sciences, Women Studies, and many more). You can click on any of these broader topics and find more information on the individual courses they have found, and what educational institution offers them. For instance, under Women Studies you can find courses on Feminist Political Though and International Women’s Voices, both offered by MIT.

Actually a lot of the courses linked to on this site are offered by MIT, which makes perfect sense since MIT is one of the main players in the Open Courseware consortium. MIT’s participation in this project is rather amazing, since they offers basically every course they teach for free to the world. If you wish to learn more about this project, please see my blog entry about it.

The OnlineCourses site is good, and well organized, so visit it to find out what free courses are out there, or visit the OpenCourseware site; you’ll basically find the same information at either site.

Hace unos días recibí un correo electrónico de alguien en el Grupo de Educación SR mostrándome un sitio web que han creado y que reúne una cantidad de cursos en línea gratis. Nunca había oído hablar de este grupo, así es que hice un poco de investigación y descubrí que son una empresa de en línea de marketing y que trabajan para las universidades en línea y otras instituciones educacionales que tienen componentes en línea. Con este poco de contexto en mente, aquí están mis puntos de vista sobre Online Courses;

¡OnlineCourses.net recopila información de una gran cantidad de sitios web que ofrecen material educacional de forma gratuita! El sitio está bien organizado, y agrupa los cursos por materia (Biología, Ingeniería, Lenguas Extranjeras, Matemáticas, Ciencias Sociales, Estudios de la Mujer, y muchos más). Puede hacer clic en cualquiera de estos temas más amplios y encontrar más información sobre los cursos individuales que han encontrado, y la institución que los ofrece. Por ejemplo, bajo Estudios de la Mujer pueden encontrar cursos de Política Feminista y Voces Internacional de la Mujer, ambas ofrecidos por MIT.

En realidad muchos de los cursos reunidos en este sitio son ofrecidos por MIT, cosa que tiene mucho sentido siendo que MIT es uno de los principales actores en el consorcio Open Courseware. La participación de MIT en este proyecto es bastante sorprendente ya que ofrece básicamente todos los cursos que enseñan de forma gratuita a todo el mundo. La página OnlineCourses es buena y esta bien organizada, así es que vale la pena visitarla para saber qué cursos gratuitos hay en la web, o visite el sitio de OpenCourseware; básicamente va a encontrar la misma información en cualquiera de estos dos sitios.

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and IITs, two of India’s premier engineering schools, are now offering close to 5,000 technical lecture videos and web-based courses targeting science and engineering students on Youtube. This collection of videos is part of a larger project – National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) – which is funded by the Indian Government. This material is not currently available under a Creative Commons License, but might be soon.

El Instituto Indio de Ciencia (IIS) y el IITs, dos de las principales escuelas de ingeniería de la India ahora están ofreciendo cerca de 5.000 vídeos de charlas y cursos técnicas basadas en la web en Youtube. Los videos están dirigidos a estudiantes de ciencias e ingeniería. Esta colección de videos es parte de un proyecto de mayor envergadura – el Programa Nacional de Tecnología Educativa (NPTEL – por sus siglas en inglés) – que está financiado por el Gobierno de la India. Este material no está disponible bajo una licencia Creative Commons, pero podría estarlo pronto.

A couple of weeks ago IFLA released its latest World Report, and for the first time made it available online in a fully searchable database, including a graphical map interface! You can download the full report, or use the maps to select only the sections you are interested in. One of the maps allows you to browse the report by country, viewing either the full country’s report, portions of it, or comparing several countries at the time.

The question oriented map allows you to access information from a single question for all the countries on the 2010 report. The questions cover six major sections; Introduction, Estimated Number of Libraries, Libraries and the Internet, Legal Issues, Social Issues, and Ethics and IFLA Initiatives. Each section is further subdivided. Some of the subdivisions include “Women and Freedom of Access to Information,” “Libraries and Environmental Sustainability,” “User Privacy and Anti-terror legislation,” “Digital Divide,” and “Violations of Intellectual Freedom” among many others.

Take a look at the full report or the sections that interest you most, it’s full of interesting information.

Hace un par de semanas IFLA publicó su último Informe Mundial y por primera vez esta disponible en línea en una base de datos completa que permite hacer búsquedas, ¡e incluyendo un interfaz de mapa! Puede descargar el informe completo, o utilizar los mapas para seleccionar sólo las secciones que le interesen. Uno de los mapas le permite navegar el informe por país, dándole la opción de ver el informe completo de un país, ver solo parte de ellos o comparar simultáneamente cierta información sobre varios países.

El otro mapa le permite ver la información por tema ofreciéndole las respuestas de una sola pregunta para todos los países incluidos en el informe de 2010. Las preguntas abarcan seis secciones: Introducción, Número estimado de Bibliotecas, Bibliotecas e Internet, Asuntos Legales, Asuntos Sociales y Ética y de las iniciativas de IFLA. Cada sección se subdivide. Algunas de las subdivisiones incluyen “La mujer y la Libertad de Acceso a la Información”, “Las bibliotecas y la Sostenibilidad Ambiental”, “Privacidad para usuarios y la legislación anti-terrorista”, “Brecha Digital” y “Violaciónes de los Derechos de Libertad”, entre muchos otros.

The Yale Silk Road Database gathers over 6,000 images takes across the Silk Road region by faculty members during site visits between 2006 and 2009. The visits were led by Mimi Hall Yiengpruksawan (Professor, History of Art) with the help of the Council on East Asian Studies at Yale University. The collection will be of use to a number of audiences, including those studying art and archaeology, religious studies, history, East Asian languages and literatures, Central Asian and Islamic studies.

If you wish to use any of the images in the database, please contact the Council on East Asian Studies, Yale University.

La Base de datos de la Ruta de la Seda de Yale recoge más de 6.000 imágenes tomadas por toda la región de la Ruta de la Seda por los profesores durante varias visitas entre 2006 y 2009. Las visitas fueron dirigidos por Mimi Hall Yiengpruksawan (Profesora de Historia del Arte) con la ayuda del Consejo de Estudios de Asia Oriental en la Universidad de Yale. La colección será de uso a todo quien quiera estudiar arte y arqueología, ciencias de la religión, historia, idiomas de Asia oriental y literaturas, Asia Central y estudios islámicos.

On that same SALALM panel titled “Documenting in Times of Adversity, Survival and Hope” my friend Lynn Shirey presented on a newly acquired collection of slides by photographer Andrés Romero Spethman, documenting Chilean Protest Murals during the dictatorship of Gen. Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990). The collection was recently purchased by Harvard and is currently available online for everyone to use.

In many cases these slides are the only record left of many of these murals, since they were quickly painted over by the regime. The murals document people’s anger, frustration and cries for help during the dictatorship.

While going through the collection you are likely to find many a familiar face, including Pablo Neruda, Gabriela Mistral, Víctor Jara, president Salvador Allende, and many other famous Chileans.

En ese mismo panel de SALALM titulado “La documentación en tiempos de adversidad, supervivencia y esperanza” mi amiga Lynn Shirey presentó sobre una colección de diapositivas por el fotógrafo Andrés Romero Spethman, recién adquiridas documentando los Murales de Protesta Chilenos durante la dictadura del general Augusto Pinochet (1973 – 1990). La colección fue adquirida recientemente por Harvard y actualmente está disponible en línea para uso de todos.

En muchos casos estas diapositivas son el único registro que queda de estos murales ya que fueron borrados con rapidez por el régimen. Los murales documentan la indignación del pueblo, su frustración y sus gritos de socorro durante la dictadura.

Mientras mira la colección seguro encontrara más de una cara conocida, incluyendo a Pablo Neruda, Gabriela Mistral, Víctor Jara, el presidente Salvador Allende, y muchos otros chilenos famosos.

Last weekend I was attending the annual SALALM conference and heard about a lot of great projects relating to libraries and Latin American. The Cuban Rafter Phenomenon: A Unique Sea Exodus project is one of them. I heard about this project on a panel titled “Documenting in Times of Adversity, Survival and Hope.” María Rita Corticelli from the University of Exeter was the official presenter, but Holly Ackerman from Duke University was there as well, since this project was derived from her PhD program with the help of a few other scholars in the area.

The site focuses on the Cubans who left the island during the raft crisis of 1994, gathering interviews, photographs, videos. The site is divided into three main areas; Part I – What is the Rafter Crisis? ; Part II – Interdicted: The Rafters Go to Guantánamo ; Part III – Crisis in the Wider Caribbean – The Case of the Cayman Islands. Each section is further subdivided.

While going through the collection I notice that the topic is covered from a variety of viewpoints, including the rafters themselves, US Coast guard officials, Cuban children, and local politicians. And all aspects of the phenomenon are documented as well. You’ll find photographs of the rafts, several timelines of key events, an interactive map, and scanned documents.

Be aware that the site has some very obnoxious background noise.

El fin de semana pasado asistía a la conferencia anual de SALALM y me entere de una cantidad de proyectos super interesantes relacionados con bibliotecas y América Latina. The Cuban Rafter Phenomenon: A Unique Sea Exodus (El fenómeno del balsero cubano: una experiencia única de éxodo) es uno de ellos. Me enteré de este proyecto en un panel titulado “La documentación en tiempos de adversidad, supervivencia y esperanza.” María Rita Corticelli de la Universidad de Exeter fue el presentador oficial, pero Holly Ackerman de la Universidad Duke estaba allí también, ya que este proyecto se deriva de su programa de doctorado con la ayuda de algunos otros expertos en el campo.

El sitio se centra en los cubanos que abandonaron la isla durante la crisis balsa de 1994, y recopila entrevistas, fotografías, y videos. El sitio se divide en tres áreas principales: Parte I – ¿Cuál es la Crisis de los Balseros? ; Parte II – Prohibido: Los balseros van a Guantánamo; Parte III – Crisis en el Caribe – El Caso de las Islas Caimán. Cada sección se subdivide.

Al analizar la colección me doy cuenta de que el tema se trata de una variedad de puntos de vista, incluyendo los balseros, funcionarios de la Guardia Costera de EEUU, niños cubanos y varios políticos. Todos los aspectos del fenómeno se documentan también. Usted encontrará fotografías de las balsas, líneas de tiempo de varios de los eventos clave, un mapa interactivo y documentos escaneados.

Tenga en cuenta que el sitio incluye un ruido de fondo muy desagradable.

Con ganas de celebrar el bicentenario de Colombia aquí recojo información sobre algunos eventos y colecciones que se han organizado en Colombia y virtualmente. ¡A celebrar se dijo!

El proyecto Libro al Viento se ha asociado con la Biblioteca Luis Ángel Arango (BLAA) para traer varias biografías sobre los grandes de Colombia al público en general. A diferencia de otras publicaciones, esta colección de bicentenario también se ofrece en formato digital. Los tres títulos de la colección son,“¡Viva la Pola!”, “¡Soy Caldas!” y “La antorcha brillante” (biografía de Antonio Nariño).

La BLAA también está organizando otros eventos que se llevan a cabo en la biblioteca. Si visita la BLAA encontrara varias exposiciones sobre el bicentenario, incluyendo “Palabras que nos cambiaron: lenguaje y poder en la independencia”, “La caricatura en Colombia a partir de la independencia” (esta incluye recorrido virtual), y “Habeas Corpus: que tengas [un] cuerpo [para exponer].” La biblioteca también organiza el XV Congreso Colombia de Historia que se llevara a cado del 26 al 30 de julio de 2010. Además tiene otra página que recoge artículos sobre la independencia de Colombia y otros países suramericanos. Y como si todo esto no fuera suficiente también tiene un blog donde están recogiendo noticias sobre más eventos del bicentenario.

El ministerio de cultura también tiene una cantidad de eventos programados, al igual que una cantidad de colecciones en línea que están disponibles para todos. Vea aquí 200 años de historia Colombiana, escuche la música que hemos gozado por dos siglos. Vea los Diálogos de la Independencia; aquí encontrara una seria de videos por tema de una cantidad de historiadores tratando varios temas de la historia Colombiana. 1810: Independencias al Aire recoge 22 capítulos de una serie radial recrea algunos de hechos históricos y de cotidianidad Colombiana. La pagina titulada Centros Municipales de Memorias tiene un mapa interactivo que le dará mas información sobre las celebraciones que se llevan a cabo en cada localidad. La Línea de Tiempo le mostrara imágenes y otra información de los últimos doscientos años, década por década. La Agenda de Celebraciones le dará más información sobre 32 eventos que se llevan a cado a lo largo y ancho de la nación.

El sistema de BiblioRed está organizando un ciclo de conferencia que trata nuestra historia, y algunas que tratan la historia de las comunidades indígenas. Todas con entrada libre. El Museo Nacional monto una cantidad de colecciones en línea que tratan el tema del bicentenario. Aquí encontrara Carteles, cartillas, y radio. Y aquí hay una lista de los eventos que se llevan a cabo en Bogotá.

Eager to celebrate the Colombia’s bicentenary I’ve gather some information about events and collections that have been organized in Colombia and virtually. Let the celebrations begin!

The Project Libro al Viento has partnered with the Luis Ángel Arango Library (BLAA) to bring several biographies of the great men and women of Colombia to the general public. Unlike other publications, this bicentennial collection will also be offered in digital format. The three titles in the collection are, “¡Viva la Pola!”, “¡Soy Caldas!” y “La antorcha brillante” (biografía de Antonio Nariño). The BLAA is also organizing other events that are being held in the library. If you visit the BLAA you’ll find several exhibitions on the bicentennial, including “Palabras que nos cambiaron: lenguaje y poder en la independencia”, “La caricatura en Colombia a partir de la independencia” (this includes a virtual tour), and “Habeas Corpus: que tengas [un] cuerpo [para exponer].” The library also organizes the XV Congress on Colombian History that market will take 26 to July 30, 2010. It also has another site that features articles on the independence of Colombia and other South American countries. As if all this were not enough it also has a blog where you can get more news about other events of the bicentennial.

The Ministry of Culture also has a number of scheduled events, as well as a number of online collections that are available to everyone. See Diálogos de la Independencia, here you will find a series of videos by subject of a number of historians discussing various topics in Colombian history. 1810: Independencias al Aire contains 22 chapters of a radio series which recreates some of the historical facts and daily realities which make up our history. The page entitled Centros Municipales de Memorias has an interactive map that will give you more information on the celebrations that take place in each location. The Línea de Tiempo will show images and information of the last two hundred years, decade by decade. The Agenda de Celebraciones will give you more information on 32 events that are taking place across the nation.

The BiblioRed system is organizing a series of conference on our history, some dealing with the history of indigenous communities. Admission to all these conferences is free. The National Museum mounted a number of online collections that address the bicentennial. Here you will find posters, brochures, and radio audio. And here is a list of events that are taking place in Bogotá.

At the beginning of the month I was in Montreal and got to visit La Grande Bibliothèque! This library is one of the city’s largest public libraries, and the collection is part of the Library and National Archives of Québec. I presume that since this region of Canada includes a vibrant separatist movement they feel the need to have their own national library and archives.  Politics aside, library holds about 4 millions items, most of which are in French, and 30% in English. This library is one of the most popular libraries in the francophone world, and I when I visited on a Sunday, the place really was full of people.

¡A principios del mes estuve en Montreal y pude visitar La Grande Bibliothèque! Esta biblioteca es una de las bibliotecas públicas mas grandes de la ciudad y la colección es parte de la Biblioteca y Archivos Nacionales de Québec. Supongo que como esta región de Canadá incluye un movimiento separatista vibrante que deben sentir la necesidad de tener su propia biblioteca y archivos nacionales. Política aparte, la biblioteca cuenta con cerca de 4 millones de artículos, la mayoría de los cuales están en francés y 30% en Inglés. Esta biblioteca es una de las colecciones más populares en el mundo de habla francesa, y el domingo que estuve de visita, el lugar realmente estaba lleno de gente.

On their website the library breakups their various collections with brief explanations of what you may expect to find. They have a large collection covering Quebec’s Heritage, archives that date back to the 17th century, resources for genealogical work, maps, government publications, and material which has been digitized, including an RSS for the most recent additions to this collection.

En su sitio web de la biblioteca separa sus diversas colecciones con una breve explicación de lo que usted puede encontrar en cada una. Tienen una gran colección que abarca el Patrimonio de Québec, archivos que se remontan al siglo 17, recursos para el trabajo de genealogía, mapas, publicaciones gubernamentales, y material que ha sido digitalizado, incluyendo un RSS para las adiciones más recientes a esta colección.

The library also offers many of the usual services you would expect from a large public library; they have a calendar of events which includes a number of activities for small children, guided tours of the library in French or English, computer workshops, and ongoing exhibitions.

La biblioteca también ofrece muchos de los servicios habituales que cabría esperar de una gran biblioteca pública; tienen un calendario de eventos que incluye una serie de actividades para los más pequeños, visitas guiadas a la biblioteca en francés o en Inglés, talleres de computación, y exposiciones en curso.

RevisteroVirtual.com is a relatively new site that offers online access to a number of major Colombian magazines. The site, which launched in 2009, offers access to about 30 titles, including M2M, Semana, Revista Dini, Jet-Set, Dinero, Revista de Logística, El Malpensante y Mobiliari.

To use the site you will have to create an account, but access to most (not all) the magazines is free.

RevisteroVirtual.com es un sitio relativamente nuevo que ofrece acceso en línea a una serie de importantes revistas colombianas. El sitio, lanzado en 2009, ofrece acceso a cerca de 30 títulos, entre ellos M2M, Semana, Revista Dini, Jet Set, Dinero, Revista de Logística, El Malpensante y Mobiliari.

Para utilizar el sitio que usted tendrá que crear una cuenta, pero el acceso a la mayoría de revistas (no todas) es gratuito.

Late last month the Spanish Minister of Culture, Ángeles González-Sinde, announced the release of Hispana: colecciones digitales de archivos, bibliotecas y museos españoles. Hispana aggregates over one million digital items from 121 different Spanish institutions, including libraries, museums, archives, as well as private and public organizations. The site also includes a directory of ongoing digitization projects in Spain, currently totaling well over 400 entries. In essence it is the Spanish version of Europeana. The site functions in Spanish, English, Catalan, Basque, and Galician.

A fines del mes pasado la ministra española de cultura, Ángeles González-Sinde anunció el lanzamiento de Hispana: Colecciones Digitales de Archivos, Bibliotecas y Museos españoles. Hispana reúne más de un millón de artículos digitales originando de 121 instituciones españolas, incluyendo bibliotecas, museos, archivos, así como organizaciones privadas y públicas. El sitio también incluye un directorio de proyectos de digitalización en curso en España, en la actualidad incluye más de 400 entradas. En esencia, es la versión española de Europeana. El sitio funciona en Español, Inglés, Catalán, Vasco y Gallego.
