The official elections may be over a year away, but it’s never too early to start paying attention to the process and looking at the trends. Yesterday Google announced another “contest” of sorts where all of us are encouraged to keep track of political trends. Basically you can take advantage of Google’s many tools that help track trend, and see if there are any trends worth paying attention to and sharing with others. If you see something interesting and let the folks at Google know about it, they will try to feature it on their Politics & Elections blog for everyone else to see as well.

Puede que aun falte un año para las elecciones presidenciales en EE.UU., pero nunca es demasiado pronto para empezar a prestar atención al proceso y ver las tendencias. Ayer Google anunció un nuevo ”concurso” donde a todos se nos anima a prestar atención a las tendencias políticas. Básicamente usted puede tomar ventaja de las muchas herramientas de Google que ayudan seguir las tendencia, y ver si hay alguna tendencia a la que valga la pena prestarle atención y compartir con los demás. Si usted ve algo interesante y se lo comenta a la gente de Google, ellos harán lo posible por compartir esta información en su blog de Política y Elecciones al alcance de todos.

While the Republicans try to choose a candidate, many of the trends that have already been shared are about Republican politics. For instance, Candidate searches during the Fox News/Google debate.

Or this poll which is just depressing. According to online viewers of the Youtube/Fox News Channel if they had to cut one department from the federal government they would cut the Department of Education! Let’s hope these folks actually get an education and start reevaluating their priorities.

O esta encuesta que es simplemente deprimente. De acuerdo con los espectadores en línea del canal de Youtube / Fox News si tuviesen que eliminar un departamento del gobierno federal ¡estos eliminarían el Departamento de Educación! Depressing political trends aside, this is a very interesting project and I’m hoping for some encouraging trends on progressive candidates and ideas!

The New York Public Library is releasing a number of new apps to give you better access to their collection. The apps are designed to do a number of things;

• NYPL Mobile connects you to the online public catalog allowing you to request material and give you directions to the branch library that has the item you are looking for. / NYPL Móvil que se conecta con el catálogo público en línea y le permite solicitar material y le dará direcciones a la sucursal de la biblioteca que tiene el artículo que está buscando.
• Biblion is an online publication for the iPad which offers stories about the libraries collections and commentary about their significance. / Biblion es una publicación en línea para el iPad que ofrece historias sobre las colecciones de las bibliotecas y comentarios sobre su significado.
• Find the Future is another game app connected to an exhibit at the main research library at Fifth Ave. The game asks users to find various objects and books within the collection and awards points for photographing them. / Encuentre el Futuro es otra aplicación de un juego conectado a una exposición en la biblioteca de investigación principal sobre Fifth Ave. El juego pide a los usuarios encontrar varios objetos y libros de la colección y le da puntos  por fotografiarlos.

Currently these apps are only available for Apple devices, but the Droid version should be arriving in the fall. All apps are free.

Background

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) continues to strengthen its strategy for the implementation of international standards and good practices for the processing, storage and dissemination of Bank’s publications to facilitate access to quality and pertinent knowledge in a timely manner and enhance the visibility of the Bank’s Knowledge Products (KPs) among relevant target groups within the Bank and in LAC. One of the fundamental pieces of this strategy is the Bank Repository of Institutional Knowledge (BRIK), coordinated by the Knowledge Management Division and the Felipe Herrera Library of the Bank. Among the various aspects of the Repository Project is the implementation of a repository platform able to interact with current Bank tools and external knowledge sources which will consolidate access, and provide additional context and meaning to Bank knowledge products, in coordination with the development and implementation of a faceted controlled vocabulary and the adoption of a metadata schema compliant with international standards to facilitate classification, retrieval, and exchange.

Objective of the consultancy
Main Activities

• Maintain controlled vocabulary files (faceted, poly-hierarchical) as needed both in hosting software (source) and within systems leveraging the source files.
• Assist in the design, development, and monitoring of a Vocabulary Portal, researching Bank’s subject vocabulary and updating thesaurus according to current events of issues in Latin American development.
• Continuously seek for advice and feedback in understanding Bank’s use of subject terms by specialists in project and sectorial teams.
• Identify and upload documents into the Bank’s Institutional Repository (BRIK).
• Review and edit metadata of documents in BRIK as assigned, adhering to cataloging standards and policies.
• Serve as a support contact for questions related to BRIK and the controlled vocabulary, including troubleshooting and performing hands-on training for Bank personnel.
• Work in close coordination with BRIK Repository and Vocabulary Portal teams.
• Other activities as assigned, in support of the Repository project team.

Deliverables

• Consistent provision of timely, high-quality service and products.
• Updated Vocabulary file.
• Final report including achievements and lessons learned upon completion of contract.

Academic Degree

Experience

Languages

A couple of months ago Google partners with the New York Times to create a daily puzzle called A Google A Day. And for the folks who don’t have a NYT subscription, Google has created a separate site for the game, including a game-specific version of their search engine called Deja Google which will allow you to play the game, spoiler free.

I just saw this on a friend’s Facebook page and it looks awesome! This new app will allow librarians to quickly and correctly shelf read entire shelves. The app uses the phone’s camera function to read call numbers and shows you which books are out of place, and can then tell you in what direction you need to move them. Additionally the app can help generate lists of the books that it was seen, thus doing your inventory!

Acabo de ver esto en la página de una amiga de Facebook y me parece genial! Esta nueva aplicación nos permitirá a los bibliotecarios leer rápidamente y de forma correcta estantes enteros de la biblioteca. La aplicación utiliza la función de la cámara del teléfono para leer los números en el dorso del libro y le muestra que libros están fuera de lugar. También le puede decir en qué dirección tiene que moverlos. Además la aplicación puede ayudarle a generar listas de los libros que vio y por tanto le ayudara a hacer inventario!

Last night I received an email from Julia Watson with the Online Education Database and she shared this list of the 10 Most Impressive Elementary School Libraries in the U.S. The list caught my attention because of the amazing stories included here. On this list you will find stories about school libraries involved in staging Shakespeare plays, and another that produces its own energy! In general they are encouraging stories of libraries who are embracing new technologies, and helping form young minds.

Back in mid December Google released TeachParentsTech.org, a great tool which will help us teach our parents, and really anyone needing some tech support, a little more about computers and technology. The site is quite easy to use, and will help you send out targeted tutorials to people in need.

A mediados de diciembre Google lanzó TeachParentsTech.org, una herramienta excelente que nos ayudará a enseñarle a nuestros padres, y en realidad cualquier persona que necesite apoyo técnico, un poco más acerca de las computadoras y la tecnología. El sitio es muy fácil de usar y le ayudará a enviar tutoriales dirigidos quien usted deseé.

TeachParentsTech includes over 5o video tutorials on all kinds of useful topics. The tutorials are organized into five main categories covering The Basics, World Wide Web, Communication, Media, and Finding Information. Each is further subdivided into more specific tasks.

TeachParentsTech incluye más de 5o tutorías en vídeo cubriendo todo tipo de temas útiles. Los tutorías están organizados en cinco categorías principales que cubren temas fundamentales, la world wide web, comunicación, medios de comunicación, y búsqueda de información. Cada tema se subdivide en tareas más específicas.

As would be expected, the tutorials focus on Google products, and limit themselves to the basic tasks each product is able to do. Maybe in a few months the folks at Google can come up with a second generation site where they offer tutorials which are a little more advanced. It would also be great if these tutorials were offered in more languages than just English. Still, all in all, it’s a very useful site.

Como era de esperar, los tutorías se centran en productos de Google, y se limitan a las tareas básicas que cada producto es capaz de hacer. Tal vez en unos meses la gente de Google podría crear un sitio de segunda generación donde ofrezcan tutorías un poco más avanzado. También sería genial si estos tutorías se ofrecen en otros idiomas, y no sólo Inglés. De cualquier manera es un sitio supremamente útil.

The Satellite Sentinel Project hopes to deter the resumption of war between North and South Sudan. The project provides documentation with the hope that exposing the country’s situation will prevent further violence and human right abuse. The idea behind the project is to engage the rest of the world in Sudan’s situation, and to provide evidence so that no one will be able to plead ignorance to the country’s situation.

El proyecto Satellite Sentinel espera prevenir la reanudación de la guerra entre el norte y el sur de Sudán. El proyecto proporciona documentación con la esperanza de que la denuncia de la situación del país evite más violencia y el abuso de los derechos humanos. La idea detrás del proyecto es involucrar al resto del mundo en la situación de Sudán, y aportar pruebas para que nadie podrá alegar ignorancia sobre la situación del país.

The project works by using Google’s Map Maker technology in cooperation with commercial satellites to capture images of possible threats to civilians, track displaced communities, detect explosions, and other indicators of violence.

This Sunday, January 9th, 2011, Sudan will be voting on a referendum to decide on a secession referendum, and the Satellite Sentinel Projects will be watching closely to document the process. People working on this project will pair up satellite imagery with reports from people on the ground to contextually the images. Beyond this weekend, the project aims to be engaged in Sudan for the long run, and continue monitoring the situation.

This project is a collaboration between Not On Our Watch, Google, the Enough Project, the United Nations UNITAR Operational Satellite Applications Programme (UNOSAT), the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative, and Trellon, LLC.

The Enough Project contributes field reports, provides policy analysis, and, together with Not On Our Watch, puts pressure on policymakers by urging the public to act.

Here is Google’s new Body Browser. This new lab allows has been described as the “Google Earth” for the body. To use this lab you will need a web browser with WebGL support (the site will prompt you when you first visit it).

Aquí esta el navegador nuevo de Google, Body Browser. Este nuevo laboratorio se ha descrito como el “Google Earth” para el cuerpo. Para utilizar este laboratorio necesita un navegador web con soporte WebGL (el sitio le proporcionara el enlace necesario).

This tool allows the user to take a closer look at the human anatomy and learn the names of each body part. You can also use the search box to locate particular items. The tabs on the left will help “add and remove” the various layers of the body.

Esta herramienta permite al usuario tomar una mirada más cercana a la anatomía humana y aprender los nombres de cada parte del cuerpo. También puede utilizar el cuadro de búsqueda para localizar partes especificas. El cuadro de navegación a la izquierda le ayudará a “agregar y quitar” las diferentes capas del cuerpo.

Taking after Don Quijote, Finding Dulcinea is a site that evaluates millions of website and offers you only the best, and most trustworthy ones. The site offers over 300 web guides covering a vast array of topics, information on the news that goes beyond headlines, and entertainment on the web.

I looked through their web guides for Latin American studies. Here I found links to Latin American Journals and Research, Academic Programs, and links to a couple research collections. There aren’t hundreds and hundreds of links under every heading, and that’s exactly the point, to only see a few quality results.

Another great thing about this site is that it functions in several languages! The entire site is available in English and Spanish, and many of the web guides are also available in Chinese and Russian!

Amazingly, Finding Dulcinea is powered by real human beings, not the latest tech trend, or search algorithm. They call themselves the “Librarian of the Internet,” and as a good librarian they focus on quality information.

The folks behind Finding Dulcinea also run the sites Sweet Search and SweetSearch2Day. Sweet Search is a search engine, actually it’s several search engines guided towards several different audiences. There is one for school librarians, one focused on biographies, and one focused on Social Studies, among others. Sweet Search 2 Day aims at offering you the a daily curated view of the best of the web.

These are all great sites; Check them out!

Tomando después de Don Quijote, Encontrando Dulcinea es un sitio que evalúa millones de página web y le ofrece sólo los mejores sitios y de mayor confianza. El sitio ofrece más de 300 guías de la red que cubren una amplia gama de temas, información sobre la noticia de que va más allá de los titulares, y lo mejore en entretenimiento en la web.

Estuve mirando a través de sus guías web sobre estudios latinoamericanos. Encontré enlaces a revistas sobre América Latina e Investigación, Programas Académicos, y enlaces a un par colecciones de investigación. No hay cientos y cientos de enlaces bajo cada tema y eso es exactamente el punto, la idea es ver sólo algunos resultados de calidad.

¡Otro aspecto maravilloso de este sitio es que funciona en varios idiomas! Todo el sitio está disponible en español e inglés, y muchas de las guías web también están disponibles en chino y ruso!

Sorprendentemente, Buscando a Dulcinea esta impulsado por seres humanos, no la tecnología más, o algún algoritmo de búsqueda. La gente del sitio se hacen llamar el “bibliotecario del Internet” y como un buen bibliotecario se centran en información de calidad.

La gente detrás de Buscando Dulcinea también manejan Sweet Search y SweetSearch2Day. Sweet Search es un motor de búsqueda; bueno en realidad son varios motores de búsqueda guiados a ciertos públicos. Hay uno para bibliotecarios escolares, uno centrado en las biografías, y uno sobre las Ciencias Sociales, entre otros. Sweet Search 2 Day tiene por objeto ofrecerle un resumen diario de la mejor de la web.

Todos estos sitios son magnificos. ¡Écheles un vistazo!
