Last week I was back home for the 24a Feria Internacional del Libro de Bogotá! I’ve attended this fair before as a kid, but this was my first attendance in a professional capacity. As a “Visitante Professional” I was invited to purchase material for my library, meet new vendors, and network with other information professionals working with Latin American material.

¡La semana pasada estuve de regreso en Colombia para la 24a Feria Internacional del Libro de Bogotá! Ya había asistido a esta feria de niña, pero esta fue mi primera visita en capacidad profesional. Como “Visitante Profesional” fui invitada a comprar material para mi biblioteca, conocer nuevos proveedore y establecer contractos profesionales de la información que trabajan con material de Américan Latina.

The book fair in Bogotá is the third largest in Latin America (after Guadalajara and Buenos Aires), and this year’s guest of honor was Ecuador. I got a chance to attend the official opening of the fair, who’s special guest included Colombia’s president Juan Manuel Santos, Ecuador’s president Rafael Correa, Colombia’s former president Belizario Betancur, and Colombia’s minister of education/acting mayor of Bogotá Maria Fernanda Campo.

La feria del libro en Bogotá es la tercera más grande en América Latina (después de Guadalajara y Buenos Aires), y el invitado de honor este año fue Ecuador. Tuve la oportunidad de asistir a la inauguración oficial de la feria, cuyos invitados especiales incluyeron el presidente de Colombia Juan Manuel Santos, el presidente Ecuatoriano Rafael Correa, el ex-presidente de Colombia Belisario Betancur, y la ministra de Educación de Colombiana y alcaldesa encargada de Bogotá, María Fernanda Campo.

The inauguration was a bit long with every panelist spending about 10 minutes personally thanking about 10 other people for the opportunity to speak at this event, but very interesting otherwise since it signals the warming of relations between Colombia and Ecuador. The two countries had gone through a scuffle three years ago when Colombia crossed into Ecuadorian territory chasing after a leader of the FARC. But things seems much improved now, and both presidents repeatedly expressed their desire to strengthen this friendship and help each other out.

La inauguración estuvo un poco larga ya que cada panelista se tomo unos 10 minutos personalmente agradeciendo como10 personas más por la oportunidad de hablar en este evento. De cualquier manera el evento estuvo muy interesante ya que señala el acercamiento entre Colombia y Ecuador. Hace tres anos los dos países habían pasado por un disgusto cuando tropas Colombianas cruzaron a territorio ecuatoriano persiguiendo a un líder de las FARC. Pero las cosas parecen estar mejorando y los dos presidentes expresaron repetidamente su deseo de fortalecer esta amistad y ayudarse mutuamente.

President Correa was at the fair as president, but also as author, and this was the launching pad for his new book “Ecuador: de Banana Republic a la no república.” And although these two presidents embrace different political agendas, both seemed open minded enough to listen to the political views of the other. Unfortunately just as I was leaving this event I overheard some women at the fair saying they wouldn’t read or accept Correa’s book even if it was given to them for free.

Presidente Correa no solo fue en la feria como presidente, sino también como autor. La feria fue la plataforma de lanzamiento para su nuevo libro ”Ecuador: de Banana Republic a la no república.” Y aunque estos dos presidentes abarcan  diferentes agendas políticas, los dos  estuvieron dispuestos a escuchar la ideología política de el otro. Lamentablemente justo cuando estaba saliendo de este evento escuché algunas mujeres en la feria diciendo que no leerían o aceptarían el libro de Correa, incluso si fuese regalado.

My trip was short, but I accomplished everything I had set out to do. The first thing on my list was getting a subscription to a database that would offer me access to Colombia’s legislation. Once that was done I visited a number of the university press’ stands where I found some very interesting books about Colombia in the international realm and about the country’s business relationships. I also found the latest issue of the “Revista Interamericana de Bibliotecología” which includes a photograph I took in Medellín last year.

Mi viaje fue corto pero logre todo lo que me había propuesto hacer. Lo primero en mi lista era conseguir una suscripción a una base de datos que me ofreciera el acceso a la legislación Colombiana. Una vez hecho esto visité varios de los stands de las editoriales universitarias donde he encontrado algunos libros muy interesantes sobre Colombia en el ámbito internacional y sobre las relaciones comerciales del país. También encontré el último número de la “Revista Interamericana de Bibliotecología“, que incluye una fotografía que tomé en Medellín el año pasado.

Here are parts one, two, and three of a news report highlighting the impressive change the city of Medellín, Colombia has had in the last decade or so, and how Juárez, Mexico is trying to model itself after it.

Aquí están capítulos uno, dos y tres de un informe de noticias destacado el impresionante cambio que la ciudad de Medellín, Colombia ha tenido en la última década y como Juárez, México está tratando de modelar estos cambios.

During the 90s Medellín has known the world over for its violence, but today it’s an entirely different place, and much of this new-found peace and prosperity can be linked to the massive investment the city made in public libraries, and other social programs. Medellín created a system of public libraries and strategically located them in some of the poorest, and most violent neighborhoods. One of these new libraries, the Parque Biblioteca León de Greiff, lives in a building which used to he a jail. What beautiful symbolism, from prison to place of learning. In each neighborhood these libraries have become places to learn, build community, and socialize.

Durante los años 90 Medellín era famosa alrededor del mundo mundo por su violencia, pero hoy es un lugar totalmente diferente y gran parte de esta nueva paz y prosperidad son resultados directos de la gran inversión que la ciudad hizo en bibliotecas públicas y otros programas sociales. Medellín creó un sistema de bibliotecas públicas ubicadas estratégicamente en algunos de los barrios más pobres y violentos. Una de estas nuevas bibliotecas es el Parque Biblioteca León de Greiff, ubicada en un edificio que antes que antes era cárcel. Que hermoso simbolismo, de cárcel a lugar de conocimiento. En cada barrio de estas bibliotecas se han convertido en lugares para aprender, construir comunidad, y socializar.

Con ganas de celebrar el bicentenario de Colombia aquí recojo información sobre algunos eventos y colecciones que se han organizado en Colombia y virtualmente. ¡A celebrar se dijo!

El proyecto Libro al Viento se ha asociado con la Biblioteca Luis Ángel Arango (BLAA) para traer varias biografías sobre los grandes de Colombia al público en general. A diferencia de otras publicaciones, esta colección de bicentenario también se ofrece en formato digital. Los tres títulos de la colección son,“¡Viva la Pola!”, “¡Soy Caldas!” y “La antorcha brillante” (biografía de Antonio Nariño).

La BLAA también está organizando otros eventos que se llevan a cabo en la biblioteca. Si visita la BLAA encontrara varias exposiciones sobre el bicentenario, incluyendo “Palabras que nos cambiaron: lenguaje y poder en la independencia”, “La caricatura en Colombia a partir de la independencia” (esta incluye recorrido virtual), y “Habeas Corpus: que tengas [un] cuerpo [para exponer].” La biblioteca también organiza el XV Congreso Colombia de Historia que se llevara a cado del 26 al 30 de julio de 2010. Además tiene otra página que recoge artículos sobre la independencia de Colombia y otros países suramericanos. Y como si todo esto no fuera suficiente también tiene un blog donde están recogiendo noticias sobre más eventos del bicentenario.

El ministerio de cultura también tiene una cantidad de eventos programados, al igual que una cantidad de colecciones en línea que están disponibles para todos. Vea aquí 200 años de historia Colombiana, escuche la música que hemos gozado por dos siglos. Vea los Diálogos de la Independencia; aquí encontrara una seria de videos por tema de una cantidad de historiadores tratando varios temas de la historia Colombiana. 1810: Independencias al Aire recoge 22 capítulos de una serie radial recrea algunos de hechos históricos y de cotidianidad Colombiana. La pagina titulada Centros Municipales de Memorias tiene un mapa interactivo que le dará mas información sobre las celebraciones que se llevan a cabo en cada localidad. La Línea de Tiempo le mostrara imágenes y otra información de los últimos doscientos años, década por década. La Agenda de Celebraciones le dará más información sobre 32 eventos que se llevan a cado a lo largo y ancho de la nación.

El sistema de BiblioRed está organizando un ciclo de conferencia que trata nuestra historia, y algunas que tratan la historia de las comunidades indígenas. Todas con entrada libre. El Museo Nacional monto una cantidad de colecciones en línea que tratan el tema del bicentenario. Aquí encontrara Carteles, cartillas, y radio. Y aquí hay una lista de los eventos que se llevan a cabo en Bogotá.

Eager to celebrate the Colombia’s bicentenary I’ve gather some information about events and collections that have been organized in Colombia and virtually. Let the celebrations begin!

The Project Libro al Viento has partnered with the Luis Ángel Arango Library (BLAA) to bring several biographies of the great men and women of Colombia to the general public. Unlike other publications, this bicentennial collection will also be offered in digital format. The three titles in the collection are, “¡Viva la Pola!”, “¡Soy Caldas!” y “La antorcha brillante” (biografía de Antonio Nariño). The BLAA is also organizing other events that are being held in the library. If you visit the BLAA you’ll find several exhibitions on the bicentennial, including “Palabras que nos cambiaron: lenguaje y poder en la independencia”, “La caricatura en Colombia a partir de la independencia” (this includes a virtual tour), and “Habeas Corpus: que tengas [un] cuerpo [para exponer].” The library also organizes the XV Congress on Colombian History that market will take 26 to July 30, 2010. It also has another site that features articles on the independence of Colombia and other South American countries. As if all this were not enough it also has a blog where you can get more news about other events of the bicentennial.

The Ministry of Culture also has a number of scheduled events, as well as a number of online collections that are available to everyone. See here for 200 years of Colombian history, listen to the music we’ve enjoyed for two centuries. See Diálogos de la Independencia, here you will find a series of videos by subject of a number of historians discussing various topics in Colombian history. 1810: Independencias al Aire contains 22 chapters of a radio series which recreates some of the historical facts and daily realities which make up our history. The page entitled Centros Municipales de Memorias has an interactive map that will give you more information on the celebrations that take place in each location. The Línea de Tiempo will show images and information of the last two hundred years, decade by decade. The Agenda de Celebraciones will give you more information on 32 events that are taking place across the nation.

The BiblioRed system is organizing a series of conference on our history, some dealing with the history of indigenous communities. Admission to all these conferences is free. The National Museum mounted a number of online collections that address the bicentennial. Here you will find posters, brochures, and radio audio. And here is a list of events that are taking place in Bogotá.

Colombia Aprende is an educational site created by the Colombian Ministry of Education which aims at offering access to educational tools to anyone who has access to the web. The site has been up and running for 6 years, and by now gathers over 20,000 resources, and has over a million visitors every month.

Information on the site is divided into a number of categories to facilitate searching. Resources span all levels of education, from elementary education to college, to advance research. Each category will offer activities, additional links (Labeled Edusitios), and resources appropriate for that level of education. Some of the resources I found in the various Edusitios were great – I found Atlas de las Culturas Afro Colombianas, Inglés para todos, and Expediciones Botánicas del siglo XXI among many others.

There are also a number of virtual forums  under the section titled Enrédese, designed to connect users and provide a space for the discussion of ideas and collaboration (this section requires you to register with the site). The section titled Docentes Publican offers a place where participants can share their publications.

This site also offers a calendar of events including activities that have an educational purpose. There are a few more section which are currently under construction, including a wiki, a blog, and a few more places which propose educational competitions.

Colombia Aprende es un sitio educativo creado por el Ministerio de Educación que tiene como objetivo ofrecer acceso a herramientas educativas para todo quien tenga acceso a la web. El sitio funciona hace 6 años y hoy reúne más de 20.000 recursos y tiene más de un millón de visitantes cada mes.

La información del sitio se divide en una serie de categorías para facilitar la búsqueda. Los recursos abarcan todos los niveles educativos, desde la educación primaria, a la universidad, y para la investigación avanzada. Cada categoría ofrecen actividades, enlaces adicionales (bajo el titulo de Edusitios) y recursos adecuados para cada nivel de educación. Algunos de los recursos que encontré en varios Edusitios incluyen – el Atlas de las Culturas afro colombianas, inglés para todos y Expediciones botánicas del Siglo XXI, entre muchos otros.

También hay una serie de foros virtuales bajo el titulo de Enrédese, estos están diseñados para conectar a los usuarios y proporcionar un espacio para la discusión de ideas y la colaboración (esta sección requiere que usted se registra en el sitio). La sección titulada Docentes Publican ofrece un lugar donde los participantes pueden compartir sus publicaciones.

Este sitio también ofrece un calendario de eventos que incluyen actividades que tienen un propósito educativo. Hay varias secciones adicionales que se encuentran actualmente en construcción, incluyendo un wiki, un blog, y algunos lugares más que proporcionan concursos educativos.

The Red de Bibliotecas will provide you with all the information you may need about the network of libraries in the Medellín area. The main page regularly posts related stories, news updates, and other relevant items.

Along the left hand side you can find links that will give you a better idea of the services offered by this library network. Under “Bibliotecas” you’ll find basic contact information and location to the participating libraries. The link for “Bibliotecólogos” provides a space for library professionals to share resources, tips, and other relevant information. They also have a brand new blog that serves the same purpose of sharing resources. “Cinéfilos” gather information about movies being screed around the city, either at libraries or as part of film festivals. There are also links for cultural events, and multimedia projects. These multimedia projects are really good, and most tell stories about the region. “Pinacoteca” share art created by Colombian artists.

Alongside the top of the page you can find links to the region’s shared OPAC, their Virtual Library which offers access to online encyclopedias, journals, and links to many other digital initiatives around the country and throughout the Spanish speaking world. There is also a map which plots out the location of all these libraries, and provides you with contact information.

This is a very well planed and organized site. I encourage you to spend some time exploring it because chances are you’ll find something of interest.

La Red de Bibliotecas le proporcionará toda la información que necesite sobre la red de bibliotecas en el área de Medellín. La página principal le ofrece actualizaciones de noticias y otros temas pertinentes.

A lo largo del lado izquierdo se pueden encontrar enlaces que le darán una mejor idea de los servicios ofrecidos por esta red de bibliotecas. En “Bibliotecas” usted encontrará información básica de contacto y la ubicación de las bibliotecas participantes. El enlace para “Bibliotecólogos” proporciona un espacio para profesionales del campo para compartir recursos, consejos y otra información pertinente. También tienen un blog nuevo que tiene el mismo propósito de compartir recursos. “Cinéfilos” reunir información sobre presentaciones de películas en la ciudad, ya sea en bibliotecas o en el marco de algún festivales de cine. También hay enlaces para eventos culturales, y proyectos multimedia. Estos proyectos multimedia son realmente buenos, y la mayoría cuentan historias acerca de la región. “Pinacoteca” compartir arte creado por artistas colombianos.

Junto a la parte superior de la página puede encontrar enlaces al catalogo en línea de la red, su Biblioteca Virtual ofrece acceso en línea a enciclopedias, revistas, y enlaces a otras muchas iniciativas digitales en todo el país y en todo el mundo de habla hispana. También hay un mapa que traza la ubicación de todas estas bibliotecas, y le proporciona información de contacto.

Este sitio está muy bien planeado y organizado. Los animo a pasar algún tiempo explorando porque lo más probable es que encontrará algo de interés.

Razones de vida by Vera Grabe

I looked up this book because I was curious to read the story of one of Colombia’s guerilla groups (The M-19) from their point of view. Vera Grabe‘s story is similar to that of many other guerrilla fighters, they want to believe that their actions will truly change the world, but unlike others, Grabe actually describes the contradictions between the rhetoric and the reality of things. This contradiction led her to eventually giving up the armed struggle and go into politics.

Empecé a leer libro porque tenía curiosidad de leer la historia de uno de los grupos guerrilleros Colombianos (el M-19) desde su punto de vista. La historia de Vera Grabe es parecida a la de muchos otros guerrilleros; muchos quieren creer que sus acciones realmente cambiaran el mundo, pero a diferencia de otros, Grabe en realidad describe las contradicciones entre la discurso político y la realidad de las cosas. Esta contradicción finalmente la llevó a renunciar a la lucha armada para luego meterse a la política.

AMANDO A PABLO. ODIANDO A ESCOBAR by VALLEJO VIRGINIA

This is Virginia Vallejo’s version of her relationship with Pablo Escobar, and of Colombia’s history during the late 80′s and early 90′s. As Escobar’s lover she seems to have had a front row seat to some of the biggest events in Colombia’s recent history.

This is a fascinating book in terms of the history she recounts, and the multiple connections she makes between the various drug loads, and between them and many of the country’s most prominent politicians.

As for her relationship with Escobar, let’s just say she’s certainly not someone you want to listen to for relationship advice. She can also come across as being rather full of herself.

All in all, a very good read.

Esta es la versión de Virginia Vallejo, de su relación con Pablo Escobar, y la historia de Colombia durante los últimos años de los 80 y principios de los 90. Como la amante de Escobar, parece haber tenido asiento de primera fila a algunos de los eventos más importantes en la historia reciente de Colombia.

Este es un libro fascinante en términos de la historia que relata, y las múltiples conexiones que hace entre los capos de droga, y entre ellos y muchos de los políticos más eminentes.

En cuanto a su relación con Escobar, digamos que ciertamente no es alguien de quien desee escuchar consejos sobre relaciones personales. A ratos Vallejo también parece bastante engreída.

En general, una muy buena lectura.

A recent article in the BBC shows how recent violence in Kenya sparked from election disputes has affected the flower industry. Usually Valentines means that workers can expect to work longer hours, and make some extra money. Others can take temporary work on these large farms, but this year ethnic violence has forces many of these workers to flee their homes and jobs, leaving the Kenyan flower industry in a difficult situation for the highest demand of the year. The industry seems to be running on about 80% of it’s usual workforce, while some of the more fortunate workers have been offered housing on the farms, and have thus been able to keep their jobs, many have been forced to send their families to live elsewhere. The most unfortunate ones had to leave everything behind, or worst yet were killed.

Violence has also disrupted transportation routs forcing flower farmers to incur more expenses by having to charter flights to deliver their product. And while we can hope that this violence will be passing, failing to deliver on the industry’s most important day can damage confidence in the Kenyans flower industry for years to come.

In Colombia Valentine day has been adopted by workers in the flower as International Day of Flowers Workers; a day designed to raise awareness about the poor conditions in which many workers toil. This movement is being highlighted by Florverde certification which places its symbol on flower production which meets their social and environmental standards. Now Florverde is trying to increase labor standards and work with trade unions to continue improving the industry.

Florverde certification covers about 25% of the Colombian flower industry, and its criteria include standards such as sealing fumigated areas to protect workers. Although these seem like obvious steps it is actually commons to have workers in the same area where pesticides are being used. In the past the industry has also seen some very nasty disputes over labor issues and attempts at unionizing. Currently there are some farms that have greatly improved conditions for workers offering decent wages, and daycare, but many other farms still have a very long way to go.

Now partnerships with European markets may help improve the situation. In order to sell in European markets, Colombian flowers would have to meet UK’s Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI). Complying with ETI includes freely chosen employment (no prison labor), freedom of association and respecting collective bargaining, safe and hygienic working conditions, the absence of child labor, living wages, reasonable working hours, the absence of discrimination, having regular employment, as well as no tolerance for harsh or inhumane treatment (read their full code here).

It would be great if the other large consumer of cut flowers would also step up to the plate and help improve conditions in this industry that brighten our days, while exploiting so many others.

Un artículo reciente de la BBC muestra cómo la reciente violencia en Kenia, creada por los resultados de las elecciones, ha afectado a la industria de las flores. Por lo general, el día de San Valentín significa que los trabajadores tendrán que trabajar más horas, y podrán hacer dinero extra. Otros podrán trabajar horas extras, pero este año la violencia étnica ha obliga a muchos de estos trabajadores a huir de sus hogares y puestos de trabajo, dejando a la industria de las flores de Kenia en una difícil situación. La industria parece estar funcionando con aproximadamente el 80% de sus empleados, algunos de los más afortunados han logrado conseguir alojamiento en estas fincas, lo cual significa que han sido capaces de mantener sus puestos de trabajo, pero muchos otros se han visto obligados a enviar a sus familias a vivir en otros lugares. Los más desafortunados tenían que dejar todo atrás, o peor aún fueron asesinados.

La violencia también ha interrumpido las rutas de transporte de flores obligando a los agricultores a incurrir en más gastos al tener que contratar vuelos privados para entregar su producto. Y si bien podemos esperar que esta violencia pasara, la incapacidad de entregar pedidos de flores en esta fecha tan importante podría afectar la confianza en toda la industria de flores de Kenia.

El Día de San Valentín en Colombia ha sido aprobado por los trabajadores como Día Internacional de los Trabajadores de Flores, un día destinado a crear conciencia acerca de las malas condiciones en que trabajan muchos de estos trabajadores. Este movimiento se destacó por la certificación Florverde, que sitúa su símbolo en la producción de flores que se ajuste a sus normas sociales y medioambientales. Florverde ahora está tratando de aumentar los estándares laborales y el trabajo con los sindicatos para seguir mejorando la industria.

La certificación Florverde abarca alrededor del 25% de la industria de las flores de Colombia, y sus normas incluyen criterios tales como sellar en área de fumigación para proteger a los trabajadores. Aunque estas medidas parecen evidentes en realidad es común que los trabajadores estén en la misma zona donde se utilizan plaguicidas. En el pasado, la industria también se ha visto envuelta en desagradables disputas sobre asuntos laborales y los intentos de sindicación. Actualmente existen algunas granjas que han mejorado las condiciones de los trabajadores ofreciendo salarios decentes, y guarderías para los hijos de estos, pero muchas otras granjas aún tienen largo camino por recorrer.

Ahora la colaboración con los mercados europeos puede ayudar a mejorar la situación. Con el fin de vender en los mercados europeos, las flores colombianas tienen que cumplir con el Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI) del Reino Unido. El cumplimiento de la ETI incluye trabajos no forzados (sin mano de obra esclavizada), la libertad de asociación y el respeto a la negociación colectiva, seguridad e higiene en las condiciones de trabajo, la ausencia de trabajo infantil, salarios decentes, horas de trabajo razonables, la ausencia de discriminación, aseguramiento de empleo regular, como así como el rechazo a la trato inhumano (lea el código completo aquí).
Qué bueno sería si el otro gran consumidor de flores cortadas también empezara a exigir mejores condiciones para esta industria, cuyo producto nos alegra el día a todos.
