Mun2.0 “Vibración Positiva y Conocimiento” is a brand new radio program dedicated to the world of information and its management. The program is created and hosted by a group of library science students and professionals from La Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá. The first program aired last Monday, beginning with a broad background discussion on the history of information management, and included two interviews with information professionals.

The second program will air Monday, August 9th, and I will be one of the two people interviewed. We talked about how I got into the library world, this blog, and what I believe new information professionals needs in order to be successful in the field.

The program airs Monday morning from 7:30 – 8:00 local time (Bogotá). Find out what your local time is with this handy tool, The World Time Zone. You can listen to the program online through the Javeriana Estereo website, and things are in the works to soon offer the program online.

Mun2.0 “Vibración Positiva y Conocimiento” es un programa radial nuevo dedicado al mundo de la información y su gestión. El programa es creado y organizado por un grupo de estudiantes y profesionales de ciencia de la información, bibliotecología de la Pontificia Universidad Javeriana en Bogotá. El primer programa salió al aire el lunes pasado, comenzando con una discusión de fondo amplio sobre la historia del manejo de la información, e incluyó dos entrevistas con profesionales en el campo.

El segundo programa saldrá al aire el lunes, 09 de agosto, y yo soy una de dos personas entrevistadas. Hablamos de cómo empece en el mundo de la bibliotecologia, este blog, y mi opinión sobre lo que creo que todo nuevo profesional necesita para tener éxito en el campo.

El programa se transmite los lunes por la mañana de 7:30am – 8:00am, hora local (Bogotá). Averigüe a que hora lo puede escuchar con esta práctica herramienta, The World Time Zone. I’ve recently become a member of the ANSS (Anthropology and Social Sciences) committee on Subject and Bibliographic Access (previous post on the group), and at our meeting while at ALA, I signed up to work on the group’s wikies and index (one covers Q&A, and the other covers New Subject Headings). Basically the committee focuses on LCSH from the field of Anthropology and Sociology, and we try to spread the knowledge through a wiki which gathers questions we work on.

Every month we come up with questions that relate to these fields and then find many of the LCSH that would be appropriate to use when searching and cataloging material on this subject. The value of this works lies in harnessing the knowledge of librarians who have been working with this material for years, some even decades. And knowing the appropriate terminology is no small feat, specially when the Library of Congress often insists on using archaic terms. The upcoming questions between now and next ALA will be covering topics related to Caribbean Culture; how to qualify generic series uniform titles; oil spills and the human impact on the environment; Psychological Anthropology; Islamic Studies; and an overview to RDA.

Recientemente soy miembro del comité de ANSS (Antropología y Ciencias Sociales) y de acceso bibliográficos (post anterior sobre el grupo). En nuestra reunión durante la ALA me inscribí para ayudar con el wikies del grupo y el índice (uno cubre preguntas y respuestas, y el otro abarca nuevos encabezamientos). Básicamente el comité se enfoca a LCSH (encabezamientos de la Biblioteca del Congreso) del campo de la Antropología y Sociología, y tratamos de difundir el conocimiento a través de un wiki que reúne las preguntas que trabajamos.

Cada mes tratamos una pregunta que se relaciona con estas áreas de estudio y a continuación encontramos muchos de los LCSH que sería apropiado utilizar a la hora de buscar y catalogar material de este tema. El valor de esta obra radica en el aprovechamiento de los conocimientos de bibliotecarios que han estado trabajando con este material desde hace años, algunos incluso décadas. Y conociendo la terminología adecuada no es poca cosa especialmente cuando la Biblioteca del Congreso con frecuencia insiste en el uso de términos arcaicos. Las preguntas a ser tratadas en los próximos 6 meses se cubren temas relacionados con la cultura caribeña, cómo aclarar títulos uniformes de serie genéricos , derrames de petróleo y el impacto humano sobre el medio ambiente; Psicológica Antropología; Estudios Islámicos, y una visión general del RDA.

I’m in DC for the ALA annual conference, before I had even arrived in DC proper, I was already learning about interesting stuff going on. This morning I ran into my friend Cindy on the bus and she told me about ALA’s Unconference. I’d never heard about this before, but apparently this was it’s second year. Their wikipedia entry described the event as a “participant-guided experience that harnesses the unstructured conversations people usually have between conference sessions into the conference itself.” The unconference takes place the day before the actual conference takes place and registration is free! (But space is limited.)

Looking at a blog entry about the previous unconference it seems that while registration to this event is free, participation is mandatory. The 2009 session asked that each individual attending the Unconference suggest a presentation they would like to give or a discussion topic they would be willing to facilitate. The organizers then took this information, presented it to all those who registered for the event and then helped set up seven presentation and thirty discussion topics.

This seems like a great way to channel people’s ideas, creativity and enthusiasm for the library field. And hopefully folks will be able to go back home and actually implement some of the ideas discussed at this event. This all sounds very, very interesting! Now I want to find someone who has actually attended one of these to hear more about it.

Estoy en D.C. para la conferencia  anual de la ALA, antes de mi llegada a lo que es propiamente D.C. ya estaba escuchando sobre eventos interesantes. Esta mañana me encontré con mi amiga Cindy en el bus y me contó sobre la “Unconference de ALA” (la no-conferencia de ALA). Yo nunca había oído hablar de esto pero aparentemente este ya es el segundo ano de este evento. Su entrada en Wikipedia describe el evento como una “experiencia guiada por participante que aprovecha las conversaciones no estructuradas que suelen tener lugar entre las sesiones de la misma conferencia” La no-conferencia se lleva a cabo el día antes de la conferencia tiene lugar y el registro es gratis! (Pero el cupo es limitado.)

Mirando una entrada de blog sobre la sesión anterior de la no-conferencia parece ser que aunque la inscripción a este evento es gratuita, la participación es obligatoria. La sesión de 2009 pidió que cada individuo que asistieron a la no-conferencia sugiriese una presentación que les gustaría dar o un tema de discusión que estarían dispuestos a facilitar. Los organizadores entonces tomaron esta información y la presentaron a todos aquellos que se inscribieron para el evento y luego ayudaron a establecer siete presentación y treinta temas de discusión.

Esto parece una excelente manera de canalizar las ideas de la gente, su creatividad y el entusiasmo por el área de la biblioteconomía. Espero que la estos participantes puedan regresar a sus lugares de trabajo yrealmente puedan poner en práctica algunas de las ideas que se discutieron en este evento. Todo esto suena muy, muy interesante! Ahora quiero encontrar a alguien que realmente ha asistido a uno de ellos para oír más sobre él.

I just learned about This Week in Libraries (twil) an online TV series about libraries all over the world! (Does it get any better than this?!) Twil is hosted by Erik Boekestejin and Jaap van de Geer, both from the DOK Library Concept Center in Delft, Netherlands.

With each episode the two hosts interview  librarians, or other folks who are involved with the library world and related technological innovations. Some of the interviews right now include a priest from the Vatican who does podcasts, freelance journalists, and library school professors, among others. The site is still quite new, only 8 shows so far, but I think these guys are on to something great. Some of the episodes are as long as an hour, others run about 30 minutes, all broadcasts are in English.

Me acabo de enterar sobre el programa This Week in Libraries (Esta semana en las bibliotecas) (twil), una serie de televisión en línea sobre las bibliotecas del mundo! (¿Hay algo mejor que esto?) Twil fue creada por Erik Boekestejin y Jaap van de Geer, ambos de la biblioteca DOK de Delft, Holanda.

Con cada capitulo los dos anfitriones entrevistan bibliotecarios, u otras personas que están involucrados con el mundo de las bibliotecas y relacionados con tecnologías de innovación. Algunas de las entrevistas en este momento incluyen un sacerdote del Vaticano que hace podcasts, periodistas independientes, y profesores de bibliotecologia, entre otros. El sitio todavía esta bastante nuevo, por ahora sólo llevan 8 capítulos, pero creo que estos chicos tienen un proyecto con mucho futuro. Algunos de los episodios duran como una hora, otros solo como 30 minutos, todas las transmisiones son en inglés.

I just saw 1946 video which was part of the “Your Life Work Series” which promoted librarianship as a career. The video suggests that you must love book and people in order to become a good librarian. It also explains that there are many different types of libraries, and each needs different collections to serve their local patrons. It continues on to explains the different types of librarians (Catalogers, Reference, Circulations, YA (Young Adult), and School Librarians), and gives examples of the work they do; all with the final goal better serving library users and the nation at large.

Acabo de ver un vídeo de 1946 que formaba parte de la “Serie de la vida laboral” que promueve la bibliotecología como buena una carrera. El video indica que usted debe amar a los libros y la gente para poder ser un buen bibliotecario. También explica que hay muchos tipos diferentes de bibliotecas, y cada una necesita diferentes colecciones para servir a sus clientes locales. El video continúa explicado los diferentes tipos de bibliotecarios (catalogadores, referencia, circulación, juvenil, y bibliotecarios de bibliotecas escolares), y da ejemplos de la labor que realizan; todas con el objetivo final servir mejor a los usuarios de la biblioteca y de la nación en general.

More recently Marty Nemko of Kilplinger made another video promoting libraries. He explains that librarianship is fascinating because we get to learn something new “every 3 minutes.” He particularly encourages people to become librarians for special collections, since this is rapidly growing field.

Más recientemente Marty Nemko de Kilplinger hizo otro video promoción sobre bibliotecas. Él explica que la bibliotecología es fascinante porque se puede aprender algo nuevo “cada 3 minutos”. En particular anima a las personas en convertirse en bibliotecarios de colecciones especiales ya que este campo es de rápido crecimiento.

Nowadays librarianship requires a lot of technology, regardless of what type of librarian you become, or what kind of library you work in. But the basics are still very much the same; you need to love books, information, and the public. You also need to be very respectful about people’s privacy, and in many cases, librarians have become the champions of civil liberties, and personal freedoms. So yes, we continue to work for our local patrons, and for the nation at large.

Ahora ser bibliotecario requiere de mucha tecnología sin importar qué tipo de bibliotecario se sea, o en qué tipo de biblioteca trabaje. Igual, en gran medida los fundamentos de la profesión son todavía los mismos, que hay que amar los libros, la información, y al público. También se tiene que ser muy respetuoso con la privacidad de las personas, y en muchos casos los bibliotecarios se han convertido en los campeones de las libertades civiles y las libertades personales. Así es que sí, seguimos trabajando para nuestros usuarios locales, y para la nación en general.

I fell into librarianship sort of by chance, but I’m happy everyday about further exploring the field and sticking to it. I’ve been working in libraries for about 9 years now, and what Nemko says is true; I do learn something new every day, many times a day.

De casualidad caí en la profesión de bibliotecaria, pero todos los días estoy feliz de continuar explorando el campo y haberme quedado en el. Ya llevo casi 9 años trabajando como bibliotecaria y lo que dice Nemko es verdad, se aprende algo nuevo todos los días, varias veces al día.

UCLA has three grants for people interested in using the holdings of the Latin American collection on campus. Awards of up to $1,500 will help candidates with transportation, lodging, and meals.

The Library of Congress (LOC) has 40 openings for summer internships! The focus of this year’s program is to increase access to the collections and increasing awareness of their digital preservation program by making them better know. Applicants must be U.S.A. citizens and must be enrolled in an accredited institution of higher education.

Travesía is a website put together by Spain’s Ministry of Culture’s General Subcommittee on the Coordination of Libraries. Basically the sites aims at promoting collaboration among Spanish librarians, and offers them a space to work together.

Information on the site is divided into three main categories; 1) Documentation that will aid collaboration among Spanish Librarians; 2) Publications by the Spain’s Ministry of Culture’s General Subcommittee on the Coordination of Libraries; and 3) Offers access to other relevant publications.

The site functions in all the official languages used in Spanish, plus English.

Travesía es un sitio web elaborado por la Subdirección General de Coordinación Bibliotecaria del Ministerio de Cultura de España. Básicamente el sitios tiene como objetivo promover la colaboración entre bibliotecarios en españa y les ofrece un espacio para trabajar juntos.

Información en el sitio se divide en tres categorías principales: 1) Documentación que ayudará a la colaboración entre los bibliotecarios españoles, 2) Publicaciones de la Subdirección General de Coordinación Bibliotecaria del Ministerio de Cultura de España, y 3) Ofrece acceso a otras publicaciones pertinentes.

AZ­Knowledge River (KR) is now accepting applications for KR Cohort 9. This is a program for individuals who are connected to the Native American or Latino community and who wish to become librarians and information professionals. The program will offer the recipient financial aid, work experience, cohort support, mentorship, conference assistance, and a curriculum which emphasizes Native American and Latino issues.

OCLC is receiving application for a fellowship position that will train a budding librarian in cataloging and metadata  procedures and standards. Given OCLC’s size and the amount of contact cataloging they do, I figure this must be a unique experience to work with a fascinating array of material.
