I’ve recently become a member of the ANSS (Anthropology and Social Sciences) committee on Subject and Bibliographic Access (previous post on the group), and at our meeting while at ALA, I signed up to work on the group’s wikies and index (one covers Q&A, and the other covers New Subject Headings). Basically the committee focuses on LCSH from the field of Anthropology and Sociology, and we try to spread the knowledge through a wiki which gathers questions we work on.

Every month we come up with questions that relate to these fields and then find many of the LCSH that would be appropriate to use when searching and cataloging material on this subject. The value of this works lies in harnessing the knowledge of librarians who have been working with this material for years, some even decades. And knowing the appropriate terminology is no small feat, specially when the Library of Congress often insists on using archaic terms. The upcoming questions between now and next ALA will be covering topics related to Caribbean Culture; how to qualify generic series uniform titles; oil spills and the human impact on the environment; Psychological Anthropology; Islamic Studies; and an overview to RDA.

Recientemente soy miembro del comité de ANSS (Antropología y Ciencias Sociales) y de acceso bibliográficos (post anterior sobre el grupo). En nuestra reunión durante la ALA me inscribí para ayudar con el wikies del grupo y el índice (uno cubre preguntas y respuestas, y el otro abarca nuevos encabezamientos). Básicamente el comité se enfoca a LCSH (encabezamientos de la Biblioteca del Congreso) del campo de la Antropología y Sociología, y tratamos de difundir el conocimiento a través de un wiki que reúne las preguntas que trabajamos.

Cada mes tratamos una pregunta que se relaciona con estas áreas de estudio y a continuación encontramos muchos de los LCSH que sería apropiado utilizar a la hora de buscar y catalogar material de este tema. El valor de esta obra radica en el aprovechamiento de los conocimientos de bibliotecarios que han estado trabajando con este material desde hace años, algunos incluso décadas. Y conociendo la terminología adecuada no es poca cosa especialmente cuando la Biblioteca del Congreso con frecuencia insiste en el uso de términos arcaicos. Las preguntas a ser tratadas en los próximos 6 meses se cubren temas relacionados con la cultura caribeña, cómo aclarar títulos uniformes de serie genéricos , derrames de petróleo y el impacto humano sobre el medio ambiente; Psicológica Antropología; Estudios Islámicos, y una visión general del RDA.

Late last month the Spanish Minister of Culture, Ángeles González-Sinde, announced the release of Hispana: colecciones digitales de archivos, bibliotecas y museos españoles. Hispana aggregates over one million digital items from 121 different Spanish institutions, including libraries, museums, archives, as well as private and public organizations. The site also includes a directory of ongoing digitization projects in Spain, currently totaling well over 400 entries. In essence it is the Spanish version of Europeana. The site functions in Spanish, English, Catalan, Basque, and Galician.

A fines del mes pasado la ministra española de cultura, Ángeles González-Sinde anunció el lanzamiento de Hispana: Colecciones Digitales de Archivos, Bibliotecas y Museos españoles. Hispana reúne más de un millón de artículos digitales originando de 121 instituciones españolas, incluyendo bibliotecas, museos, archivos, así como organizaciones privadas y públicas. El sitio también incluye un directorio de proyectos de digitalización en curso en España, en la actualidad incluye más de 400 entradas. En esencia, es la versión española de Europeana. El sitio funciona en Español, Inglés, Catalán, Vasco y Gallego.

UCLA has three grants for people interested in using the holdings of the Latin American collection on campus. Awards of up to $1,500 will help candidates with transportation, lodging, and meals.

Yale Law Library has begin collecting bobbleheads representing a variety of personalities in the legal world. The collection will be part of their rare books library, which currently has an exhibit displaying many of their holdings.

Some of the collection highlights include dolls depicting William H. Rehnquist, 16th chief justice of the United States, Justice David H. Souter, and Justices Sandra Day O’Connor and John Paul Stevens.

La Biblioteca de Derecho de Yale ha empezando a coleccionar muñecos bobbleheaeds, representando una variedad de personalidades en el mundo jurídico. La colección será parte de su biblioteca de libros raros, que actualmente cuenta con una exposición que muestra muchos de estos muñecos.

My friend Alberto Martinez, who works at El Colegio de México, is always collaborating on great projects, the most recent one has resulted in free access to all the journals that the university edits!

The journals, which cover a wide range of topics, many of them relating to Mexican history can be accessed here. You can browse the collection by journal title, or through the advance search feature at the top left corner of the page.

While at ALA I attended the meeting for the Anthropology and Sociology Section (ANSS) Subject and Bibliographic Access Committee of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL). The meeting was quite small, but everyone was very nice and welcoming, and all seemed very dedicated to the group’s work.

ANSS Subject and Bibliographic Access Committee brings together libraries both from technical services and public services to gather and share information on the field of Anthropology and Sociology. The information they gather is divided into two main categories; “Anthropology and Sociology Q & A” and “New Subject Headings in Social Sciences.” Under the Q&A section you will find an archive of questions with detailed answers regarding how to catalog of search anthropological material. Some of the issues addresses include;

• What sorts of subject headings are available for deities and how does one establish subject headings for deities?
• What subject headings are used to find materials on criminals and prisoners? What is the difference between the application of the two headings?
• Why does the Library of Congress sometimes treat Indian tribes as topical subjects and sometimes as geographic subjects/corporate authors?
• If an author has multiple surnames, which one is he filed under in a library catalog?

The section on New Subject in Social Sciences offers you lists of new LCSH in the field, organized year, then month, and currently going back to 2007. (Keep in mind that not all the lists have been updated recently.) Some of the new headings include;

• Nouveau riche
• Cultural fusion in church music (La fusión cultural en la música de la iglesia)
• Compulsive hoarding (El acaparamiento compulsivo )
• Lesbian police officers (Agentes de policía lesbianas)
• Libraries and home schooling (Las bibliotecas y la educación en casa)
• Anarchist artists (Artistas anarquistas)

The ANSS Subject and Bibliographic Access Committee is always looking  for new members. Mientras asistía a la conferencia de ALA asistí a la reunión del grupo de Anthopology and Sociology Section (ANSS) de la Asociation of College and Research Libraries (ACRL). La reunión fue bastante pequeña, pero todo el mundo fue muy amable y todo parecen muy dedicados al trabajo del grupo.

El ANSS reúne a bibliotecarios, tanto de servicios técnicos y servicios públicos para recopilar y compartir información sobre el campo de la Antropología y la Sociología. La información que recogen se dividen en dos categorías principales: “Antropología y Sociología Preguntas y Respuestas” y “Nuevos Encabezamientos en las Ciencias Sociales”. Bajo la sección Preguntas y Respuestas se encuentra un archivo de preguntas con respuestas detalladas para la catalogación y búsqueda de material antropológico. Algunas de las preguntas tratan los siguientes temas;

• ¿Qué tipo de encabezamientos de materia están disponibles para las deidades y cómo se establecen los encabezamientos de materia para las deidades?
• ¿Que encabezamientos se utilizan para encontrar materiales sobre delincuentes y presos? ¿Cuál es la diferencia entre la aplicación de los dos encabezamientos?
• ¿Por qué la Biblioteca del Congreso, a veces trata a las tribus indígenas como temas de actualidad y, a veces como sujetos geográficos o como autores corporativos?
• ¿Si un autor tiene apellidos múltiples, bajo cual de ellos se encuentra en el catálogo de la biblioteca?

La sección sobre Nuevos Encabezamientos en las Ciencias Sociales ofrece listas de encabezamientos de la biblioteca del Congreso,organizadas por año y mes, y actualmente se remonta a 2007. (Tenga en cuenta que no todas las listas se han actualizado recientemente.) Algunas de las nuevas líneas incluyen;

This morning, bright and early, I attended an ALA Midwinter Conference session hosted by OCLC titled “Redesigning Technical Services Workflows.” The session was composed of three presenters, two of which shared their experiences on how their technical services departments are adapting to decreased budgets and new technology trends. The third presenter, Ruth Fischer (R2 Consulting), discussed a report she helped create which discussed the creation and use of bibliographic records in North America.

The main point of this presentation is that libraries all across North America are duplicating each others work when we could be working together to maximize the creation of bib. records for benefit of us all. Her presentation included some shocking numbers. The report concluded that there are about 34,000 original catalogers in North America, and that if each one cataloged only one item a day, every work day, that would produce 6 million new records a year! These numbered followed her pointing out that most libraries have growing backlogs! It seems most libraries are instructing the catalogers to bring in records from institutions like OCLC, alter them in the local catalog, and then not re-share the new record. This process is being repeated over and over in libraries all over the region.

The presentation went on to address the fact that many non-library users are starting to gather much of the information gathers in these MARC records and either using it for other purposes, or reselling it! And in a systems where the Library of Congress (LOC) ends up creating many of these records and them making them available to the library community at large, the LOC is basically subsidizing everyone’s cataloging, libraries, and non-libraries alike.

I’m not sure how we are going to get all, or even most libraries to start working more collaboratively, but I do know that we need to get working on this, instead of spending, who knows how many more years duplicating each others work.

Esta mañana, muy temprano, asistí a una sesión de conferencia del ALA Midwinter organizada por OCLC titulada “Rediseño de Servicios Técnicos y flujos de trabajo.” La sesión se compuso de tres presentadores, dos de los cuales compartieron sus experiencias sobre la forma en que sus departamentos de servicios técnicos se están adaptando a la disminución de presupuestos y las tendencias de nuevas tecnologías. La tercera presentadora, Ruth Fischer (R2 Consulting) examinó un informe que ayudó a crear que discutía la creación y utilización de registros bibliográficos en Norte América.

El punto principal de esta presentación es que las bibliotecas en toda Norte América están duplicando el trabajo de otros cuando podrían estar trabajando juntos para maximizar la creación de registros bibliográficos para beneficio de todos. Su presentación incluyó algunos números impactantes. El informe concluye que hay cerca de 34.000 catalogadores profesionales en Norte América y que si cada uno de ellos catalogara sólo un libro al día, cada día de trabajo, ¡se crearían 6 millones de registros nuevos al año! Fischer menciono estos números justo después de señalar que la mayoría de las bibliotecas tienen acumulación de material que no hay podido catalogar. Al parecer la mayoría de las bibliotecas están instruyendo a los catalogadores a que migren registros encontrados en instituciones como la OCLC, modificarlos en el catálogo local, y luego no volver a compartir el nuevo registro. Este proceso se repite una y otra vez en las bibliotecas de toda la región.

Otro punto de la presentación fue ilustrar el hecho de que hay una cantidad de usuarios, tanto bibliotecas, como otros, que están comenzando a recopilar toda la información que se reúne en estos registros MARC y los están utilizando para otros fines, ¡o los revenden! En un sistema donde la Biblioteca del Congreso (LOC) produce muchos de estos registros y los ponen a disposición de la comunidad bibliotecaria en general, la LOC básicamente esta subvencionando la catalogación de todo el mundo, las bibliotecas y otras instituciones por igual.

No estoy segura de cómo vamos a conseguir que todas, o incluso la mayoría de las bibliotecas empiecen a trabajar en colaboración pero sé que tenemos que hacer algo al respecto. No tiene sentido alguno que pasemos quien saben cuantos años más duplicando nuestro trabajo.

AZ­Knowledge River (KR) is now accepting applications for KR Cohort 9. This is a program for individuals who are connected to the Native American or Latino community and who wish to become librarians and information professionals. The program will offer the recipient financial aid, work experience, cohort support, mentorship, conference assistance, and a curriculum which emphasizes Native American and Latino issues.

OCLC is receiving application for a fellowship position that will train a budding librarian in cataloging and metadata  procedures and standards. Given OCLC’s size and the amount of contact cataloging they do, I figure this must be a unique experience to work with a fascinating array of material.
