Yesterday the Guardian posted an article about a new database the BBC put together called Wildlife Finder. The site gathers hundreds of video footage, from over 30 BBC programs,of wild animals the world over. Videos are organized by type of animal, habitat, adaptation features, or ecozone.

Each entry also includes the animal’s scientific classification, adaptation information which comes from the Animal Diversity Web, habitat, and a couple paragraphs providing some basic information, the content of which comes from Wikipedia. You’ll also find information on the animal’s conservation status, and outside links for further information. There is also a short clip of the sounds each animal makes. Sir David Attenborough is featured in a number of the videos.

The site seems like a great resource, but I’ve been trying to access it for two days now, but instead of videos all I get is a notice saying “This content doesn’t seem to be working. Try again later.” I’ll keep trying, but hopefully the folks at the BBC will fix this soon.

10/01/09 – I heard that the videos are only available to viewers in the UK. Even without the video portion this is still a great site.

Ayer The Guardian publicó un artículo sobre una nueva base de datos de la BBC llamado Wildlife Finder. El sitio reúne cientos de vídeo de más de 30 programas de la BBC, de animales salvajes en todo el mundo. Los vídeos están organizados por tipo de animal, hábitat, características de adaptación, o ecozona.

Cada entrada incluye también la clasificación científica de los animales, la información que proviene Animal Diversity Web, su hábitat y un par de párrafos proporcionar cierta información básica, cuyo contenido proviene de Wikipedia. Usted también encontrará información sobre el estado de conservación de los animales, y enlaces externos para más información. También hay un  clip breve de los sonidos de cada animal. Sir David Attenborough aparece en varios de los videos.

El sitio parece un gran recurso pero he estado tratando de acceder desde hace dos días y en vez de vídeos lo único que consigo es un aviso que dice “Este contenido no parece estar funcionando. Inténtelo de nuevo más tarde.” Voy a seguir intentando, pero espero que la gente de la BBC arregle esto pronto.

10/01/09 – Escuche decir que los videos sólo están disponibles para los usuarios en el Reino Unido. Incluso sin la parte de vídeo esto sigue siendo un gran sitio.

The Atlas database at the Louvre provides access to all the items exhibited at the museum, some 30,000 items. This database was first up and running in French, and currently functions in English thanks to financial help the American Friends of the Louvre. Each item can be magnified, and comes with a brief description.

You can search the site by running simple searched on a specific artist, work, or style. You can also browse by museum room, department, or recent acquisitions. Do take note that there is a much larger selection to browse through if you are using the French interface.

La base de datos Atlas en el Louvre ofrece acceso a todos los objetos expuestos en el museo, unos 30.000 artículos. Esta base de datos empezo funcionando en francés, y ahora también funciona en inglés, gracias a la ayuda financiera de los Amigos Americanos del Louvre. Cada elemento puede ser ampliada, y viene con una breve descripción.

Usted puede buscar en el sitio mediante la ejecución de simples búsquedas en un determinado artista, pedazo de arte, o estilo. También puede navegar por sala del museo, el departamento, o las adquisiciones recientes. Tome nota de que la selección a mirar es mucho mas grande si esta usando el interfaz en francés.

DASH (Digital Access to Scholarship at Harvard) has just been released in Beta. The repository is the product of a university initiative to fully participate in the Open Access movement by making available faculty publications to the world.

This project establishes that publications by Harvard faculty from the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and the Law School are automatically shared with the world, and will share copyright with the university library, allowing it to republish them as needed.

The database can be browsed by school, or can be keyword searched.

Este proyecto establece que las publicaciones por profesores de Harvard de la Facultad de Artes y Ciencias, y la Facultad de Derecho se comparten automáticamente con el mundo, y compartirán los derechos de autor con la biblioteca universitaria, lo que le permite a esta vuelva a publicarlos cuando sea necesario.

Wiki Acceso Abierto is an initiative that was born out of the listserve Lista Latinoamericana sobre Acceso Abierto y Repositorios, and works with support from the Universidad Nacional de Rosario. The wiki’s aim is to bring together information on Open Access projects from the Spanish Speaking world.

Right now the wiki is very much in the development stage, but from the proposed categories it seems like they will eventually cover all the important topics.

Participation is encouraged, and will obviously make this a better resource for all of us. So if you have a project to add, please join the wiki.

Wiki Acceso Abierto es una iniciativa que nació de la Lista Latinoamericana sobre Acceso Abierto y Repositorios, y trabaja con el apoyo de la Universidad Nacional de Rosario. El objetivo del wiki es reunir información sobre proyectos de Acceso Abierto alrededor del mundo hispanohablante.

Ahora el wiki está en la etapa de desarrollo, pero según las categorías propuestas parece que eventualmente cubrirán todos los temas importantes.

Este es un proyecto de colaboración, y entre más participación, mejor será el wiki para todos. Si tiene un proyecto relacionado, por favor participe.

Government Attic is a site that collects hundreds of government documents that have been released under the Freedom of Information Act.

The site divides its content into “FOIA Logs” and “Documents” for easier browsing, but there is also a search box you can use. The logs will give you a lot of documentation showing the process of how many of these documents were requested and the fight to get them released. The Document section contains, well, the actual documents, and while looking through them I found a few with blacked out sections. Some of the information you’ll find here are Guides to Air Force Historical Literature, 1943-1983; Letters from J. Edgar Hoover to Honorable William P Rogers, 13-January-1953; Informal complaints about The Daily Show with Jon Stewart television show made to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Washington D.C., 2004-2007, and all kinds of other random things.

Government Attic (Ático del Gobierno) es un sitio que recopila cientos de documentos gubernamentales que han sido hechos públicos por medio de demandas bajo el Freedom of Information Act (Ley de Libertad de Información).

El sitio divide su contenido en “Registros de la FOIA” y “Documentos” para facilitar la navegación, pero también hay un cuadro de búsqueda que puede utilizar. Los registros le dará una gran cantidad de documentación que demuestra el proceso de cómo muchos de estos documentos fueron solicitados y la lucha por hacerlos accesibles a todos. Bajo documento encontrara los propios documentos, y mientras les daba una ojeada encontré algunos con secciones tachadas. Aquí encontrara documentos como guías de literatura histórica de las Fuerza Aérea, 1943-1983; las Cartas de J. My friend Samira just showed me this blog entry from Shoestring Venture, which although quite sarcastic, absolutely hits the nail on the head. They argue that universities are overpaying for journal articles which vendor are getting, essentially for free. To quote them;

The scheme worked like this: [vendors]  charge incredibly high prices for a journal subscription (hundreds to thousands of dollars for one four to twelve issue subscription — no joke), then “bundle” all the journals together at a substantial discount, thus forcing universities to break the bank for a couple journals or break the bank less severely to buy everything in your catalog.

Then they add;

Here’s the kicker. Academic journals are written, refereed, and edited for free by university professors. Since all the work that goes into producing the content of a journal (research, writing, refereeing, and editing) is free labor, why is any university paying for journals in this day and age when all academic work can be researched, written, refereed, edited, and then distributed online for free?

I completely agree, and fortunately a few alternatives are starting to spring up. For one there is the Directory of Open Access Journals which proves open access to thousands of journals, many of them searchable, and covering a wide range of topics. Oxford Journals offered some 90 journals, many in open access format. SCOAP3 gathers open access article in the area of physics.

Major universities like Harvard, Boston University, and UC Berkeley have committed to making most of the literature produced by their faculty available to the world in an open access format. Berkeley has also set up a website encouraging others to participate in this process. Cornell set up the arXiv.org site which gathers open access article in the field of physics, mathematics, computer sciences and the like.

I encourage you to look around because every day it seems more and more people are committing to a free exchange of information!

The site is organized in a very straight forward matter, making searching easy. They first divide by large categories, such as population, fuel, work, disease, food, housing, etc., and then further break down each of these categories. Maps are also shows as thumbnails, and alphabetically, for easy browsing, Maps can be viewed online, and a good amount of them also come in PDF format for easy saving and downloading. Below each map you will find links to spreadsheets clearly explaining (and beautifully color coded) where the data originated for each map.

El sitio está organizado de una manera bastante clara, facilitando búsquedas del lugar. Primero dividen por categorías básicas como población, energía, trabajo, enfermedades, comida, vivienda, etc., y luego dividen otra vez cada categoría. También podrá ver los mapas en versiones reducidas, y por orden alfabético para facilitar su navegación. Podrá ver los mapas en línea, pero también hay bastantes que vienen en formato PDF, así es que los podrá descargar e imprimir fácilmente. Debajo de cada mapa encontrara enlaces a varios documentos explicando claramente el origen de las estadísticas que crearon dicho mapa.

You really should poke around this site, because they have some fascinating stuff there. They have maps on all sorts of interesting topics such as midwifes working, aircraft departures, amphibians at risk, books published, and hundreds more.

Realmente debería echarle una ojeada al sitio ya que tienen mapas realmente fascinantes, y sobre una cantidad de temas. Por ejemplo, tienen mapas sobre el trabajo de parteras, el despegue de aviones, anfibios en peligro, libros publicados y centenares más.

This maps shows books borrowed from public libraries around the world. / Este mapa muestra los libros prestados de bibliotecas públicas alrededor del mundo.

The project is kept by a group of academics, all but one based out of the University of Sheffield. The group includes professors, cartographers, researchers, and IT support.

Este proyecto lo mantiene un grupo de académicos, casi todos basados en la Universidad de Sheffield. El grupo reúne profesores, cartógrafos, investigadores, y especialistas en tecnología.

As the name implies, Latinas in History is about Latinas around the world, and throughout the ages (although with heavy emphasis on the USA); both the stories of individual women, as well as the groups they form. The site offers a few essays with a general overview of Latinas in the USA, which helps contextualize the large collection of biographies to follow. They include world reknown Latinas, including the likes of Gloria Anzaldua, Vicky Carr, “Lolita” Lebron, Dolores Huerta, Carolina Herrera, and many, many others. Each entry contains a small summary of the woman’s life, or main acomplishment, as well as links to outside sources. These are also organized by topics, such as Labor activism, law, journalism, music and dance, etc.

The site also contains resources to teach about Latina Women in the USA, including lesson plans, mostly geared towards highschool and undergraduate students.

All in all, a very interesting site. Just be warned that music will automatically stream when you load the site.

Como el nombre implica, Latinas in History es un sitio web sobre mujeres Latinas alrededor del mundo y a lo largo de los años (pero con énfasis en los EEUU). El sitio contiene historias de mujeres individuales, así mismo como mujeres y los diversos grupos que forman. También encontrara varios ensayos ofreciendo una visión general de las mujeres Latinas en EEUU que le ayudaran a contextualizar la gran colección de biografías a seguir. La sección de biografías incluye muchas mujeres renombradas, como lo son Gloria Anzaldua, Vicky Carr, “Lolita” Lebron, Dolores Huerta, Carolina Herrara, y muchas otras. Cada entrada contiene una breve explicación de su vida, y logras así como varios enlaces a otros recursos en la web. Las biografías también están organizadas por temas, tales como activismo, derecho, periodismo, música y dance, etc.

Para aquellos interesados en ensenar el tema, el sitio ofrece recursos para usar en el salón, para estudiantes de bachiderato y pregrado.
En sí, un sitio muy interesante. Pero tenga pendiente que la pagina tiene música.

Today the World Digital Library goes live! The project has been in the works for about 4 years now, and was initially conceived by James Billington of the USA Library of Congress (LOC), and developed by UNESCO and LOC. The site will function in seven languages and will showcase digital treasures from around the globe and throughout the ages. It is hoped that the site will help promote international understanding and expand non-English, non-Western content online.

¡Hoy la Biblioteca Digital Mundial se lanza en vivo! El proyecto ha estado en las planeación cerca de 4 años y fue inicialmente concebido por James Billington de la Biblioteca del Congreso de EE.UU. (LOC), y desarrollado por la UNESCO y la LOC. El sitio funcionará en siete idiomas y mostrará tesoros digitales de todo el mundo y a lo largo de los siglos. Se espera que el sitio ayudará a promover el entendimiento internacional y expandir el contenido de la web en idiomas diferentes al inglés, y de regiones no occidentales.

This really is a fascinating collection. You can search it by geographic region, time period, topic, holding institution, and type of item. While looking  you’ll find old photographs, curated videos, detailed explanations of the items, and links to share these treasures through some of the most commons web 2.0 venues, such as Facebook and Twitter.

Esta realmente es una colección fascinante. Se puede buscar por región geográfica, período de tiempo, tema, institución, y el tipo de elemento. Mientras ojea la colección encontrará fotografías viejas, videos, explicaciones detalladas de los artículos, y enlaces pare compartir estos tesoros a través de algunos de los más comunes sitios web 2.0, tales como Facebook y Twitter.
