I just saw this on a friend’s Facebook page and it looks awesome! This new app will allow librarians to quickly and correctly shelf read entire shelves. The app uses the phone’s camera function to read call numbers and shows you which books are out of place, and can then tell you in what direction you need to move them. Additionally the app can help generate lists of the books that it was seen, thus doing your inventory!

Acabo de ver esto en la página de una amiga de Facebook y me parece genial! Esta nueva aplicación nos permitirá a los bibliotecarios leer rápidamente y de forma correcta estantes enteros de la biblioteca. La aplicación utiliza la función de la cámara del teléfono para leer los números en el dorso del libro y le muestra que libros están fuera de lugar. También le puede decir en qué dirección tiene que moverlos. Además la aplicación puede ayudarle a generar listas de los libros que vio y por tanto le ayudara a hacer inventario!

Why have regular bookcases when you could store your books in something like these? I’ll concede that some of these aren’t actually very practical, but they certainly are fun!

The folks from Electric Literature set out to find out which 2010 book might literally save your life. I guess this is not the best use for book, but the video is amusing none the less.

La gente de Electric Literature quiso averiguar que libro del 2010 podría literalmente salvarle la vida. Supongo que este no es el mejor uso de un libro, pero igual el video es divertido.

Yesterday I spent the afternoon at the Boston Book Festival. This is the second year the festival has been organized, and it seems to get bigger every year. While at the book festival I visited a number of stands of book stores, writing workshops, educational program, and cultural organizations.

While at the festival I chatted for a while with the OLPC folk, saw some of the local NPR personalities, and browsed a lot of interesting books.  I also saw a group trying to beat Jack Kerouac’s record established by writing up a 120 feet scroll which became On The Road. By 4 pm they were still a long ways away from giving Kerouac a run for his money.

While at the book festival I also attended a talk titled “Home and Away,” whose two guest speakers were Bill Bryson, and Tony Hiss; the event was hosted by WBUR’s Robin Young. The two authors talked about the concept of traveling, and how at times we can travel throughout the world and time without leaving out homes. Bryson as always was full of great jokes and interesting tidbits of random information.

I’m already looking forward to next year’s festival!

Ayer me pase la tarde en el Festival del Libro de Boston. Este es el segundo ano en que se organiza el festival, y parece que cada vez creen el popularidad. Mientras estaba en el festival de libros visite varios stands de librerías, talleres de escritura, el programa educativo, y organizaciones culturales.

Mientras estaba en el festival charlé un rato con la gente del proyecto OLPC, vi algunas de las personalidades de la radio publica, y vi un montón de libros interesantes. También vi un grupo que intenta batir el récord establecido por Jack Kerouac al redactar el libro El Camino sobre un rollo de papel de 120 pies. A las 4 pm aún estaban muy lejos lejos de realmente hacerle la competencia a Kerouac.

Mientras que en el festival de libro que también asistí a una charla titulada “Home and Away”, cuyos dos invitados fueron Bill Bryson, y Tony Hiss, el evento fue organizado por Robin Young, presentadora de la emisora radial WBUR. Los dos autores hablaron sobre el concepto de viajar y cómo a veces podemos viajar por todo el mundo y a través del tiempo sin dejar nuestra casa. Bryson como siempre estaba lleno de chistes e interesantes minucias de información.

¡Ya estoy esperando el festival del próximo año!

¡El Quijote ha llegado a Youtube! La Real Academia Española recién lanza una invitación para que todos participemos en una lectora colectiva del famoso Quijote de la Mancha. La Academia explica que el proyecto espera promover la presencia de contenido en español en la web, y la novela.

Don Quixote has come to Youtube! The Real Academia Española recently launched an invitation for everyone to participate in a collective reading of the famous Don Quixote de la Mancha. The Academy says the project hopes to promote the presence of Spanish-language content on the web, and the novel.

The Huffington Post has a nice collection of 15 famous movies (including clips) based on banned books. The collection has put together in collaboration with the ALA and Banned Books Week. It’s always surprising to see what books get people worked up… or that people are threatened by books to begin with…

El Huffington Post tiene una buena colección de 15 películas famosas (incluyendo cortos) basadas en libros que han sido prohibidos. La colección se organizo con la colaboración de la ALA y la Semana de Libros Prohibidos. Siempre es sorprendente ver que libros hacen que la gente se agite… o peor un, ver que algunos se siente amenazados por algún libro.

Looks like the folks at Google were wondering just how many books there are in the world. As of last Sunday, and by their count, that number is almost 130 million. Take a look at their blog entry about this project; they go into all the details of how they came up with this number, what resources they used for the count, and the problem of duplicates, among other issues.

This Argentinean artist, Raul Lemesoff, has transformed an old car into a mobile library. His rolling library named Arma de Instrucción Masiva ( Weapon of Mass Instruction) aims are spreading peace through literature.

Este artista argentino, Raúl Lemesoff, ha transformado en un carro viejo en una biblioteca móvil.
Su biblioteca rodante llamado Arma de Instrucción Masiva tiene como objetivo promover la paz a través de la literatura.
