Twice a year the Library of Congress open the doors of the Main Reading Room to the public. I was there last weekend and loved it. In addition to seeing the gorgeous room, there were also plenty of librarians at hand answering questions about the building and the many extraordinary services they offer.

Dos veces al año la Biblioteca del Congreso abre las puertas de su  principal sala de lectura al público. Estuve allí la semana pasada y me encantó. Además de ver el salón que es precioso, también habían un montón de bibliotecarios presentas, todos atendiendo preguntas sobre el edificio y los muchos servicios extraordinarios que ofrecen.

Last week I had a great visit at the Law Library of Congress. My visit began with an introduction by David Mao, Deputy Law Librarians of Congress, who gave share some historical background about the library, the scope of the collection, and the type of services they provide.

La semana pasada tuve una visita excelente en la Biblioteca de Leyes del Congreso. Mi visita comenzó con una introducción de David Mao, Bibliotecarios Adjunto de Derecho del Congreso, quién dio a compartir algunos antecedentes históricos sobre la biblioteca, el alcance de la colección, y el tipo de servicios que prestan.

The LOC was established in 1800 as the government moved from Philadelphia to DC. In 1814 the library was destroyed with the British burned the Capitol Buildings, and in 1815 the library began anew with the purchase of Thomas Jefferson’s personal library. As the country grew and acquired the Louisiana Territory, Florida, and a portion of Mexico, the Law LOC strengthen their effort to collect foreign law.

La LOC se estableció en 1800 cuando el gobierno se traslado de Filadelfia a Washington DC. En 1814 la biblioteca fue destruida por los británicos quienes quemaron los edificios del Capitolio. En 1815 la biblioteca comenzó de nuevo con la compra de la biblioteca personal del ex-presidente Thomas Jefferson. A medida que el país creció y adquirió el territorio de Louisiana, Florida, y una parte de México, la LOC jurídica fortaleció sus esfuerzos para coleccionar ley extranjera.

Afterwards I met Janice Hyde, director of GLIN Central. Janice share all her tricks about this great database. And in case you don’t know about GLIN, it stands for Global Legal Information Network and it’s a great tool to find official texts of laws, regulations, judicial decisions, and other complementary legal sources contributed by governmental agencies and international organizations. The initial search screen is a Google style search box, but you can also select “More search options” and limit your search by country, date, and subject terms - do notice that you can download this entire index and use it for your own work if needed. And here is the search guide Janice shared with me, it’s everything you ever wanted to know about GLIN.

Después conocí a Janice Hyde, directora de GLIN Central. Janice compartir todos sus trucos acerca de esta gran base de datos. Y en caso de que no sepan de esta base de datos,  GLIN es la Red Global de Información Legal y es una gran herramienta para encontrar los textos oficiales de leyes, reglamentos, decisiones judiciales y otras fuentes complementarias, todas aportados por la varias agencias gubernamentales y organizaciones internacionales. La pagina inicial de búsqueda es un cuadro de búsqueda estilo Google, pero también puede seleccionar ”Más opciones de búsqueda” y limitar la búsqueda por país, fecha y términos - dese cuenta de si desea puede descargar este índice completo y utilizarlo para su propio trabajo. Y aquí está la guía de búsqueda que Janice compartido conmigo, es todo lo que siempre quiso saber sobre GLIN.

Next came Eduardo Soares, Senior Foreign Law Specialist. Eduardo and the other foreign law specialist tend to have been raised and received their legal training abroad. Such a background allows them to be experts in other legal systems so they may correctly explain these jurisdictions to Congress members and other patrons. Their expertise also allows them to do comparative research and help local patrons research legislation from around the world. The foreign law specialist also produce reports that will inform congress members about a variety of topics. Many of these report are initially available only to Congress, but some of the information is shared with the public later on through a variety of means.

Después vino Eduardo Soares, Especialista Principal del Derecho Extranjero. Eduardo y los otro especialista en derecho extranjero tienden a se extranjeros y a haber recibido su capacitación profesional en su país de origen. Su currículo les permite ser expertos en otros sistemas jurídicos, lo cual les permite poder explicar estas jurisdicciones a los miembros del Congreso y otros usuarios de la biblioteca. Su experiencia también les permite hacer estudios comparativos, y ayudar a sus usuarios a hacer investigación sobre la legislación del mundo. El especialista en derecho extranjero también elaborar informes que informarán a los miembros del Congreso acerca de una variedad de temas. Muchos de estos informes están disponibles inicialmente sólo para el Congreso, pero parte de la información es compartida con el público más adelante a través de una variedad de medios.

One of the places where to access information gathered by the foreign law specialist if the Global Legal Monitor. Here are all their RSS options. I’m subscribed to a few of these, and love receiving their notices directly in my reader. Another place to check is the Current Legal topics which provide commentary and recommended resources about events with legal significance. A third place to look are their Guides to the law Online. Here you will find tons of great resources on USA law, many countries around the world, as well as international and multinational law.

Uno de los lugares donde se comparte la información recopilada por el especialista en derecho extranjero es el Global Legal Monitor. Aquí están todas las opciones de RSS. Estoy suscrito a algunos de estos, y me encanta recibir sus anuncios directamente en mi lector. Otro lugar para ver es Temas Jurídicos Actuales que ofrecen comentarios y recursos recomendados sobre los acontecimientos con relevancia jurídica. Un tercer lugar para buscar son sus guías de la ley en línea. Aquí usted encontrará toneladas de excelentes recursos sobre legislación de EE.UU., la ley de muchos países del mundo, así como el derecho internacional y supranacional.

Then I met Matthew Braun, who works reference at the Law Loc. He shared a lot of general information about their services and how to find legal resources for the USA. One of the best destinations is THOMAS, which offers you USA legislation. Two other interesting online collection are the Supreme Court Nominations, and A Century of Lawmaking . He also answered questions about how to use the Law LOC (you just show up, and register for an ID), and their ILL services to other libraries. The Law LOC reference department is around to help everyone with their legal research. Here are the many topics they cover and their contact information.

Last, but certainly, not least, Clifton Brown, Program Specialist for outreach and services allowed me to see their stacks! The onsite collection covers a football field and it’s a sight to see. Rows upon rows of books from all around the world, and any language you can image.

Por último, pero no por ello menos importante, Clifton Brown, especialista del programa de servicios de extensión ¡me permitió ver la estantería privada de la biblioteca! La colección abarca todo un campo de fútbol y es un espectáculo digno de ver. Filas y filas de libros de todo el mundo, y cuantos idiomas pueda imaginar.

As the de facto National Library, the LOC works to serve Congress, the Supreme Court, and all the rest of us! Today anyone from the USA or abroad can call, email, or show up at the Law LOC and get help with their research. If you are in DC, do go visit them, they are doing wonders with our tax dollars!

Last week I was back home for the 24a Feria Internacional del Libro de Bogotá! I’ve attended this fair before as a kid, but this was my first attendance in a professional capacity. As a “Visitante Professional” I was invited to purchase material for my library, meet new vendors, and network with other information professionals working with Latin American material.

¡La semana pasada estuve de regreso en Colombia para la 24a Feria Internacional del Libro de Bogotá! Ya había asistido a esta feria de niña, pero esta fue mi primera visita en capacidad profesional. Como “Visitante Profesional” fui invitada a comprar material para mi biblioteca, conocer nuevos proveedore y establecer contractos profesionales de la información que trabajan con material de Américan Latina.

The book fair in Bogotá is the third largest in Latin America (after Guadalajara and Buenos Aires), and this year’s guest of honor was Ecuador. I got a chance to attend the official opening of the fair, who’s special guest included Colombia’s president Juan Manuel Santos, Ecuador’s president Rafael Correa, Colombia’s former president Belizario Betancur, and Colombia’s minister of education/acting mayor of Bogotá Maria Fernanda Campo.

La feria del libro en Bogotá es la tercera más grande en América Latina (después de Guadalajara y Buenos Aires), y el invitado de honor este año fue Ecuador. Tuve la oportunidad de asistir a la inauguración oficial de la feria, cuyos invitados especiales incluyeron el presidente de Colombia Juan Manuel Santos, el presidente Ecuatoriano Rafael Correa, el ex-presidente de Colombia Belisario Betancur, y la ministra de Educación de Colombiana y alcaldesa encargada de Bogotá, María Fernanda Campo.

The inauguration was a bit long with every panelist spending about 10 minutes personally thanking about 10 other people for the opportunity to speak at this event, but very interesting otherwise since it signals the warming of relations between Colombia and Ecuador. The two countries had gone through a scuffle three years ago when Colombia crossed into Ecuadorian territory chasing after a leader of the FARC. But things seems much improved now, and both presidents repeatedly expressed their desire to strengthen this friendship and help each other out.

La inauguración estuvo un poco larga ya que cada panelista se tomo unos 10 minutos personalmente agradeciendo como10 personas más por la oportunidad de hablar en este evento. De cualquier manera el evento estuvo muy interesante ya que señala el acercamiento entre Colombia y Ecuador. Hace tres anos los dos países habían pasado por un disgusto cuando tropas Colombianas cruzaron a territorio ecuatoriano persiguiendo a un líder de las FARC. Pero las cosas parecen estar mejorando y los dos presidentes expresaron repetidamente su deseo de fortalecer esta amistad y ayudarse mutuamente.

President Correa was at the fair as president, but also as author, and this was the launching pad for his new book “Ecuador: de Banana Republic a la no república.” And although these two presidents embrace different political agendas, both seemed open minded enough to listen to the political views of the other. Unfortunately just as I was leaving this event I overheard some women at the fair saying they wouldn’t read or accept Correa’s book even if it was given to them for free.

Presidente Correa no solo fue en la feria como presidente, sino también como autor. La feria fue la plataforma de lanzamiento para su nuevo libro ”Ecuador: de Banana Republic a la no república.” Y aunque estos dos presidentes abarcan  diferentes agendas políticas, los dos  estuvieron dispuestos a escuchar la ideología política de el otro. Lamentablemente justo cuando estaba saliendo de este evento escuché algunas mujeres en la feria diciendo que no leerían o aceptarían el libro de Correa, incluso si fuese regalado.

My trip was short, but I accomplished everything I had set out to do. The first thing on my list was getting a subscription to a database that would offer me access to Colombia’s legislation. Once that was done I visited a number of the university press’ stands where I found some very interesting books about Colombia in the international realm and about the country’s business relationships. I also found the latest issue of the “Revista Interamericana de Bibliotecología” which includes a photograph I took in Medellín last year.

Mi viaje fue corto pero logre todo lo que me había propuesto hacer. Lo primero en mi lista era conseguir una suscripción a una base de datos que me ofreciera el acceso a la legislación Colombiana. Una vez hecho esto visité varios de los stands de las editoriales universitarias donde he encontrado algunos libros muy interesantes sobre Colombia en el ámbito internacional y sobre las relaciones comerciales del país. También encontré el último número de la “Revista Interamericana de Bibliotecología“, que incluye una fotografía que tomé en Medellín el año pasado.

Here are parts one, two, and three of a news report highlighting the impressive change the city of Medellín, Colombia has had in the last decade or so, and how Juárez, Mexico is trying to model itself after it.

Aquí están capítulos uno, dos y tres de un informe de noticias destacado el impresionante cambio que la ciudad de Medellín, Colombia ha tenido en la última década y como Juárez, México está tratando de modelar estos cambios.

During the 90s Medellín has known the world over for its violence, but today it’s an entirely different place, and much of this new-found peace and prosperity can be linked to the massive investment the city made in public libraries, and other social programs. Medellín created a system of public libraries and strategically located them in some of the poorest, and most violent neighborhoods. One of these new libraries, the Parque Biblioteca León de Greiff, lives in a building which used to he a jail. What beautiful symbolism, from prison to place of learning. In each neighborhood these libraries have become places to learn, build community, and socialize.

Durante los años 90 Medellín era famosa alrededor del mundo mundo por su violencia, pero hoy es un lugar totalmente diferente y gran parte de esta nueva paz y prosperidad son resultados directos de la gran inversión que la ciudad hizo en bibliotecas públicas y otros programas sociales. Medellín creó un sistema de bibliotecas públicas ubicadas estratégicamente en algunos de los barrios más pobres y violentos. Una de estas nuevas bibliotecas es el Parque Biblioteca León de Greiff, ubicada en un edificio que antes que antes era cárcel. Que hermoso simbolismo, de cárcel a lugar de conocimiento. En cada barrio de estas bibliotecas se han convertido en lugares para aprender, construir comunidad, y socializar.

Yesterday I spent the afternoon at the Boston Book Festival. This is the second year the festival has been organized, and it seems to get bigger every year. While at the book festival I visited a number of stands of book stores, writing workshops, educational program, and cultural organizations.

While at the festival I chatted for a while with the OLPC folk, saw some of the local NPR personalities, and browsed a lot of interesting books.  I also saw a group trying to beat Jack Kerouac’s record established by writing up a 120 feet scroll which became On The Road. By 4 pm they were still a long ways away from giving Kerouac a run for his money.

While at the book festival I also attended a talk titled “Home and Away,” whose two guest speakers were Bill Bryson, and Tony Hiss; the event was hosted by WBUR’s Robin Young. The two authors talked about the concept of traveling, and how at times we can travel throughout the world and time without leaving out homes. Bryson as always was full of great jokes and interesting tidbits of random information.

I’m already looking forward to next year’s festival!

Ayer me pase la tarde en el Festival del Libro de Boston. Este es el segundo ano en que se organiza el festival, y parece que cada vez creen el popularidad. Mientras estaba en el festival de libros visite varios stands de librerías, talleres de escritura, el programa educativo, y organizaciones culturales.

Mientras estaba en el festival charlé un rato con la gente del proyecto OLPC, vi algunas de las personalidades de la radio publica, y vi un montón de libros interesantes. También vi un grupo que intenta batir el récord establecido por Jack Kerouac al redactar el libro El Camino sobre un rollo de papel de 120 pies. A las 4 pm aún estaban muy lejos lejos de realmente hacerle la competencia a Kerouac.

Mientras que en el festival de libro que también asistí a una charla titulada “Home and Away”, cuyos dos invitados fueron Bill Bryson, y Tony Hiss, el evento fue organizado por Robin Young, presentadora de la emisora radial WBUR. Los dos autores hablaron sobre el concepto de viajar y cómo a veces podemos viajar por todo el mundo y a través del tiempo sin dejar nuestra casa. Bryson como siempre estaba lleno de chistes e interesantes minucias de información.

¡Ya estoy esperando el festival del próximo año!

At the beginning of the month I was in Montreal and got to visit La Grande Bibliothèque! This library is one of the city’s largest public libraries, and the collection is part of the Library and National Archives of Québec. I presume that since this region of Canada includes a vibrant separatist movement they feel the need to have their own national library and archives.  Politics aside, library holds about 4 millions items, most of which are in French, and 30% in English. This library is one of the most popular libraries in the francophone world, and I when I visited on a Sunday, the place really was full of people.

¡A principios del mes estuve en Montreal y pude visitar La Grande Bibliothèque! Esta biblioteca es una de las bibliotecas públicas mas grandes de la ciudad y la colección es parte de la Biblioteca y Archivos Nacionales de Québec. Supongo que como esta región de Canadá incluye un movimiento separatista vibrante que deben sentir la necesidad de tener su propia biblioteca y archivos nacionales. Política aparte, la biblioteca cuenta con cerca de 4 millones de artículos, la mayoría de los cuales están en francés y 30% en Inglés. Esta biblioteca es una de las colecciones más populares en el mundo de habla francesa, y el domingo que estuve de visita, el lugar realmente estaba lleno de gente.

On their website the library breakups their various collections with brief explanations of what you may expect to find. They have a large collection covering Quebec’s Heritage, archives that date back to the 17th century, resources for genealogical work, maps, government publications, and material which has been digitized, including an RSS for the most recent additions to this collection.

En su sitio web de la biblioteca separa sus diversas colecciones con una breve explicación de lo que usted puede encontrar en cada una. Tienen una gran colección que abarca el Patrimonio de Québec, archivos que se remontan al siglo 17, recursos para el trabajo de genealogía, mapas, publicaciones gubernamentales, y material que ha sido digitalizado, incluyendo un RSS para las adiciones más recientes a esta colección.

The library also offers many of the usual services you would expect from a large public library; they have a calendar of events which includes a number of activities for small children, guided tours of the library in French or English, computer workshops, and ongoing exhibitions.

La biblioteca también ofrece muchos de los servicios habituales que cabría esperar de una gran biblioteca pública; tienen un calendario de eventos que incluye una serie de actividades para los más pequeños, visitas guiadas a la biblioteca en francés o en Inglés, talleres de computación, y exposiciones en curso.

Earlier this week I got to visit the Toronto Public Library. Before arriving there I had seen some beautiful pictures of the main branch and had read that it is the largest urban public library system in the world. Of course I had to see it myself.

The Toronto Public Library system has 99 branch libraries and holds 11 millions items! The library was established in York Mechanic’s Institute in 1830, 4 years before the Town of York became the City of Toronto. As early as 1885 the library began collecting material in a variety of languages, initially buying books in German and French. In 1977 the New Metropolitan Toronto Library opens (the branch I visited). In 2001 the library was the second most used public library in the world, after Hong Kong; very impressive numbers considering that all of Canada only has about 34 million people.

Like many major public libraries, the Toronto Public Library offers help to newcomers and people who are learning English. All branches of the library have books, DVDs, and CDs in a multitude of languages, Citizenship Preparation material, and English classes for newcomers.

My library visit in Toronto was delightful, the librarians I ran into were very helpful, and since the library is right downtown and right next to the subway, after visiting the library I continued to go see the rest of the downtown area.

A principios de esta semana tube la oportunidad de visitar la Biblioteca Pública de Toronto. Antes de llegar allí había visto algunas imágenes hermosas de la rama principal de la biblioteca y había leído que es el sistema urbano de bibliotecas públicas más grande en el mundo. Por supuesto que tenía que ver por misma.

El sistema de la Biblioteca Pública de Toronto tiene 99 sucursales y 1 millones artículos! La biblioteca se creó por el Instituto de Mecánica York en 1830, 4 años antes de la ciudad de York se convirtiera en la ciudad de Toronto. Ya en 1885 la biblioteca comenzó a recoger materiales en una variedad de idiomas, en un principio la compra fue de libros en alemán y francés. En 1977 la Nueva Biblioteca Metropolitana de Toronto abre (la rama visité). En 2001 la biblioteca fue la segunda biblioteca pública más utilizado en el mundo, después de Hong Kong; un número muy impresionante teniendo en cuenta que todo Canadá sólo tiene alrededor de 34 millones de personas.

Al igual que muchas bibliotecas públicas importantes, la Biblioteca Pública de Toronto ofrece ayuda a los recién llegados y las personas que están aprendiendo inglés. Todas las sucursales de la biblioteca tiene libros, DVDs y CDs en una multitud de idiomas, material de Preparación de Ciudadanía, y las clases de Inglés para los recién llegados.

Mi visita a la biblioteca en Toronto fue una delicia, los bibliotecarios que me encontré me ayudaron con el mayor de los gustos, y puesto que la biblioteca esta en justo en el centro de la ciudad y justo al lado del metro después de visitar la biblioteca continué mi paseo por el resto de la zona centro de la ciudad.

Sometimes I need a reminder that I live in a city full of wonderful library, and a couple of weeks ago my friend Jenn gave me just such a reminder. After we learned about the couple of books George Washington had borrowed from a library, and never returned, she mentioned that the Boston Anthenæum has a large collection of Washington’s books, and that library was absolutely gorgeous and totally worth a visit. (Apparently Washington’s family was trying to sell his collection to the UK, and the Boston Anthenæum felt this material should remain in the USA.)  Jenn call the library and made an appointment for a guided tour, and when we arrived at the library our guide was at the door waiting for us.

The physical library really is beautiful, and their main reading room reminded me of much smaller version of the Long Room at the Trinity College Library. This room, which is located on the 5th floor, also has a small balcony from which you get a wonderful view of the city.  The library has a great Children’s Library that over looks the old Granary Burying Ground, and the basement holds a great collection of art books.

A bit about the history of the place; The Boston Anthenæum has been around since 1807, arriving at their current location in 1849. They are a membership library, meaning you have to pay a membership for access. This will allow you to check books out, and give you access to the library itself, which constantly has art exhibits on display some belonging to the library, many on loan from the MFA!

The collection itself includes over 600,000 items ranging from some of the oldest bibles in this country, to current popular fiction that you can check out and take to the beach. Their catalog has been automated, and can be search online, and keep in mind that their circulating material will go out through Inter Library Lending. They are also constantly organizing wonderful events for their members – here’s their calendar.

If you’re in Boston, call them up and schedule a tour, it’s well worth it!

A veces necesito un recordatorio de que vivo en una ciudad llena de biblioteca maravillosa y hace un par de semanas mi amigo Jenn me lo recordo. Después nos enteramos del par de los libros que George Washington había tomado prestado de una biblioteca y nunca volvió ella mencionó que el Boston Anthenæum tiene una gran colección de libros de Washington y que la biblioteca es absolutamente magnífica y merece la pena una visita. (Al parecer, la familia de Washington estaba tratando de vender su colección al Reino Unido, y el Anthenæum Boston sintió este material debería permanecer en los EE.UU.) Jenn llamo a la biblioteca e hizo una cita para una visita guiada. Cuando llegamos a la biblioteca de nuestra guía estaba en la puerta esperándonos.

La biblioteca física es realmente hermosa y su sala principal de lectura me recordó a una versión más pequeña del Long Room en la Biblioteca de Trinity College. Esta sala que se encuentra en el quinto piso también tiene un pequeño balcón que da a una vista maravillosa de la ciudad. La biblioteca cuenta con una gran biblioteca infantil con vistas sobre el antiguo Granary Burying Ground y el sótano tiene una gran colección de libros de arte.

Un poco sobre la historia del lugar; El Boston Anthenæum existe desde 1807, llegando a su ubicación actual en 1849. The folks from BiblioRed were so kind as to send me some additional images of the two libraries I visited, the Biblioteca Pública Parque El Tunal, and the Biblioteca Pública Virgilio Barco, and I wanted to share them. They also send me some great facts about the library systems. Thank you!

• During 2009 BibloRed received 4,437,945 visitors, who used 7,314,052 items.

• Programs promoting literacy and writing spread to 176,920 users, during the course of 8,927 activities. Culture Advocacy programs reached152,263 attendees.

• Between 2003 and 2008 177,238 people have joined the library network; in 2008 alone 21,425 users joined BiblioRed; 46,610 renewed their membership; and 357,707 items were lent out.

• BiblioRed holdings spans more than 370,000 volumes, including the, children, general, literature and audiovisual collections of seven libraries; all of which can be checked out.

• Membership is free for children under 12 years of age and has a cost of 5,000 pesos for members 13 years or older.

• Every day BiblioRed lends out approximately 1,000 items to a variety of different audiences.

La gente de BiblioRed fueron tan amable de enviarme algunas imágenes adicionales de las dos bibliotecas que visité, la Biblioteca Pública Parque El Tunal y la Biblioteca Pública Virgilio Barco, y quería compartirlas. • Los programas de promoción de lectura y escritura se extendieron a 176.920 lectores en 8.927 actividades y las actividades de fomento a la cultura atendieron a  152.263 asistentes.

• Entre 2003  y 2008  se  han afiliado 177.238  ciudadanos a la Red,  en el año 2008  se afiliaron 21.425 ciudadanos, renovaron su afiliación 46.610 y se prestaron para la casa 357.707 materiales de consulta.

• Más  de 370.000  volúmenes  de las colecciones,  infantil,  general, de literatura y  de audiovisuales de siete  bibliotecas,  para llevar a su  casa anualmente.

• La afiliación es gratuita  para  menores  de 12  años  y tiene un costo  de 5.000 pesos  para afiliados de 13 años en adelante.

• Cada día la Red presta alrededor de 1.000 libros a diferentes tipos de públicos.

Today I spent the day at the Parque Biblioteca España – Santo Domingo Savio. I had read about this library before in the NYT, and was fascinated to see that Colombia was developing a great public library systems.

The library has been running for three years now, and was initially build with a grant by the king and queen of Spain (hence the name of the library). A while later the prince of Spain made another donation, this time it was 1500 books for the library. These donations, added to the award the library won from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation have ensured that the library’s collection is very complete, and well stocked in terms of technology.

While visiting the library I learned that the library has two main computer rooms, one for adults and one for children, each one staffed with a library assistant that can help users with their work. The collection is also divided between adult and children’s sections. The children’s section is full of the usual library material, but also includes a games room where there is always a staff member to supervise the children. There are also several community rooms, and a large auditorium residents can sign up to use.

While there I was surprised to see just how many people where using the library, while there was a total absence of graffiti or any other kind of vandalism. The entire building is spotless, a true sign that the community has completely embraced their new library and have incorporated it into the community.

In the three years that the library has opened apparently crime has gone down in the neighborhood, and there is a marked rise in the number of locally owned business in the area. Santo Domingo Savio used to be known as a hot bed for crime and gang activity, but now it’s famous for its library!

And if all of this isn’t enough to make you want to visit the library, consider that to get there, you have to ride the MetroCable! This is part of Medellin’s metro system and the only example in the world where a gondola lift system has been implemented for public transportation. The views from the MetroCable are absolutely beautiful, and it’s probably one of the best places to see all of the city from above.

And hey, you might even run into a local child who will offer to tell you the history of the library and its impact on the neighborhood for a small donation. The child who approach us had a very complete and well memorized speech about the library. And when I tried to ask a question in the middle of his talk, he vehemently let me know that he wasn’t taking questions until the end! I did eventually find out that he does use the library on a regular basis to complete homework assignments.

03\16\2010 – Correction, Caracas, Venezuela just opened a metrocable, and there is another one under construction in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Hoy me pasé el día en el Parque Biblioteca España – Santo Domingo Savio. Ya había leído acerca de esta biblioteca en el NYT, y estaba fascinada al ver que Colombia estaba desarrollando sistemas de bibliotecas públicas increíble.

La biblioteca ha estado funcionando durante tres años, e inicialmente se construye con una donación por el rey y la reina de España (de ahí el nombre de la biblioteca). Un rato después el príncipe de España hizo otra donación, esta vez fue de 1500 libros para la biblioteca. Estas donaciones, sumadas a la adjudicación que la biblioteca se gano de la Fundación Bill y Melinda Gates han asegurado que la colección de la biblioteca sea muy completa y bien provista en términos de tecnología.

Durante mi visita a la biblioteca me enteré de que la biblioteca tiene dos salas de principales de computadores, una para adultos y otra para niños, cada una dotada con un auxiliar de biblioteca que pueden ayudar a los usuarios con su trabajo. La colección está dividida entre las secciones de adultos y niños. La sección de niños está llena del material usual, pero también incluye una sala de juegos donde siempre hay un miembro del personal para supervisar a los niños. También hay varias salas comunitarias, y un gran auditorio que los usuarios pueden usar para organizar eventos.

También me sorprendió ver cuántas personas estaban en la biblioteca, cuando a la misma vez había una ausencia total de grafiti o cualquier otro tipo de vandalismo. Todo el edificio está impecable, un verdadero signo de que la comunidad ha adoptado por completo su nueva biblioteca y la han incorporado a la comunidad.

En los tres años desde que se abrió la biblioteca, la delincuencia ha descendido en el barrio, y hay un marcado aumento en el número de empresas de propiedad local en la zona. Santo Domingo Savio solía ser conocida como un semillero para la delincuencia y la actividad de pandillas, ¡pero ahora es famoso por su biblioteca!

Y si todo esto no es suficiente para que desee visitar la biblioteca, consideren que para llegar ahí, ¡usted tiene que viajar en el MetroCable! Este es parte del sistema de metro de Medellín y el único ejemplo en el mundo donde se han usado un sistema de telecabina para transporte público. Las vistas desde el MetroCable son absolutamente hermosas, y es probablemente uno de los mejores lugares para ver toda la ciudad desde arriba.

Y oye, incluso podrías encontrarse con un niño del barrio que ofrezca a contarle la historia de la biblioteca y su impacto en el barrio por una pequeña donación. El niño que se nos acerco tenía un discurso muy completo y muy bien memorizado acerca de la biblioteca. Y cuando traté de hacer una pregunta en la mitad de su discurso, ¡con vehemencia me hizo saber que no iba a responder preguntas sino hasta el final! Al final logre enterarme que el niño usa la biblioteca regularmente para completar las tareas escolares.
