Government Attic is a site that collects hundreds of government documents that have been released under the Freedom of Information Act.

The site divides its content into “FOIA Logs” and “Documents” for easier browsing, but there is also a search box you can use. The logs will give you a lot of documentation showing the process of how many of these documents were requested and the fight to get them released. The Document section contains, well, the actual documents, and while looking through them I found a few with blacked out sections. Some of the information you’ll find here are Guides to Air Force Historical Literature, 1943-1983; Letters from J. Edgar Hoover to Honorable William P Rogers, 13-January-1953; Informal complaints about The Daily Show with Jon Stewart television show made to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Washington D.C., 2004-2007, and all kinds of other random things.

Government Attic (Ático del Gobierno) es un sitio que recopila cientos de documentos gubernamentales que han sido hechos públicos por medio de demandas bajo el Freedom of Information Act (Ley de Libertad de Información).

El sitio divide su contenido en “Registros de la FOIA” y “Documentos” para facilitar la navegación, pero también hay un cuadro de búsqueda que puede utilizar. Los registros le dará una gran cantidad de documentación que demuestra el proceso de cómo muchos de estos documentos fueron solicitados y la lucha por hacerlos accesibles a todos. Bajo documento encontrara los propios documentos, y mientras les daba una ojeada encontré algunos con secciones tachadas. Aquí encontrara documentos como guías de literatura histórica de las Fuerza Aérea, 1943-1983; las Cartas de J. Edgar Hoover al Honorable William Rogers P, 13-Enero-1953; y denuncias acerca de The Daily Show con Jon Stewart televisión a la Comisión Federal de Comunicaciones (FCC), Washington, DC, 2004-2007, y un montón otras cosas.

Razones de vida by Vera Grabe

I looked up this book because I was curious to read the story of one of Colombia’s guerilla groups (The M-19) from their point of view. Vera Grabe‘s story is similar to that of many other guerrilla fighters, they want to believe that their actions will truly change the world, but unlike others, Grabe actually describes the contradictions between the rhetoric and the reality of things. This contradiction led her to eventually giving up the armed struggle and go into politics.

Empecé a leer libro porque tenía curiosidad de leer la historia de uno de los grupos guerrilleros Colombianos (el M-19) desde su punto de vista. La historia de Vera Grabe es parecida a la de muchos otros guerrilleros; muchos quieren creer que sus acciones realmente cambiaran el mundo, pero a diferencia de otros, Grabe en realidad describe las contradicciones entre la discurso político y la realidad de las cosas. Esta contradicción finalmente la llevó a renunciar a la lucha armada para luego meterse a la política.

Just as I was falling asleep last night listening to the BBC, I heard about a very interesting software called Haystack. Basically Haystack is software that was developed by Austin Heap, a San Francisco based “techy” to help Iranians bypass government censorship of the web, while simultaneously protecting their identity. The software will allow people to access the entire web, including all the social networking sites that have become popular with amature journalist and others wishing to do local, instant, reporting.

Heap created Haystack after hearing about all the government censorship of the web that was going on after the disputed elections. So far the software seems to be quite effective. There are plans of creating similar software to release in China.

Mientras me quedaba dormida anoche escuchando la BBC, oí hablar de un software súper interesante llamado Haystack. Básicamente Haystack es un software que fue desarrollado por Austin Heap, un “techy” basado en San Francisco, para ayudar a eludir la censura del gobierno iraní de la web, y al mismo tiempo proteger su identidad. El software permitirá a todos acceder a la totalidad de la web, incluyendo todos los sitios de redes sociales que se han hecho populares con el periodista aficionado y otros que deseen reportar a nivel local, e instantemente.

Heap desarrollo Haystack después de escuchar acerca de toda la censura del gobierno iraní, después de la disputa electoral. Hasta el momento, el software parece ser muy eficaz. Hay planes de crear un programa parecido para uso en la China.

Over the weekend I heard this interesting story on NPR’s “On The Media” about a new tool that will help you get a more balance view of complex stories. Dispute Finder is an added toolbar that will present you with alternative viewpoints to those expressed throughout the web.

Basically after downloading the program you visit a website and Dispute Finder will show you other sites with contrary arguments to the story. Knowing that many of us trust some sources, and discredit others, you can vote up or down results, and over time Dispute Finder will better understand how to effectively present you alternative viewpoints that you’ll trust.

You can also help contribute to the discussion by finding more information on the web that either supports or opposes a particular view and you can add these to the program so that others may find your information as well.

Sounds like a very useful tool to help us effectively discuss all kinds of topics with others.

Dispute Finder was developed at Intel’s Research Lab in Berkeley.

Durante el fin de semana escuché esta interesante historia en “On The Media”, de NPR, sobre una nueva herramienta que le ayudará a obtener una opinión más equilibrada de algún tema complejo. Dispute Finder se añade como un “toolbar” que le presentará puntos de vista alternativos a los expresadas alrededor de la web.

Básicamente, después de descargar el programa, visite un sitio web y Dispute Finder le mostrarán otros sitios que muestran argumentos contrarios. Sabiendo que muchos de nosotros confiamos en algunas fuentes, y desacreditar otras, usted puede votar hacia “arriba” o “abajo” los resultados, y en el futuro Dispute Finder empezará a comprender mejor cómo exponerle puntos de vista alternativos en los cuales podrá confiar.

También puede contribuir a la discusión buscando más información en la web que apoye o se opone a algún argumento en particular y lo podrá añadir al programa para que otros puedan encontrar su información.

Suena como una herramienta muy útil para ayudarnos a examinar de manera eficaz todo tipo de temas con los demás.

AMANDO A PABLO. ODIANDO A ESCOBAR by VALLEJO VIRGINIA

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
This is Virginia Vallejo’s version of her relationship with Pablo Escobar, and of Colombia’s history during the late 80′s and early 90′s. As Escobar’s lover she seems to have had a front row seat to some of the biggest events in Colombia’s recent history.

This is a fascinating book in terms of the history she recounts, and the multiple connections she makes between the various drug loads, and between them and many of the country’s most prominent politicians.

As for her relationship with Escobar, let’s just say she’s certainly not someone you want to listen to for relationship advice. She can also come across as being rather full of herself.

All in all, a very good read.

Esta es la versión de Virginia Vallejo, de su relación con Pablo Escobar, y la historia de Colombia durante los últimos años de los 80 y principios de los 90. Como la amante de Escobar, parece haber tenido asiento de primera fila a algunos de los eventos más importantes en la historia reciente de Colombia.

Este es un libro fascinante en términos de la historia que relata, y las múltiples conexiones que hace entre los capos de droga, y entre ellos y muchos de los políticos más eminentes.

En cuanto a su relación con Escobar, digamos que ciertamente no es alguien de quien desee escuchar consejos sobre relaciones personales. A ratos Vallejo también parece bastante engreída.

En general, una muy buena lectura.

The Swedish Pirate Party captured a seat in the EU parliament today after running a campaign solely based on reforming copyright laws! The party believes that Europe no longer has a balance between respecting authorship and promoting cultural development.

Some of the party’s claims include claims that all non-commercial copyright and use should be completely free, and that file sharing and p2p networking should be encouraged rather than criminalized. They also want the “monopoly” for copyright holders to be limited to 5 years after publication, this would certainly be a drastic change to the almost century long copyrights that are currently in awarded in the USA. They also want DRM technologies banned. Their party platform extends into patents as well, charging that the patenting of pharmaceuticals contributed to preventable deaths around the Third World every year.

This is certainly a radical platform compared to the corporate world we live in, but as a librarian, I’d like to see more information being shared, so I’ve happy to see this new party’s win! I’ll be keeping an eye on their political activity from here on.

El Pirate Party (Partido Pirata) Sueco acaba de capturar un puesto en el parlamento Europeo, tras manejar una campaña basada exclusivamente en la reforma de las leyes del derecho de autor. El partido cree que Europa ya no tiene un balance entre el respeto del derecho del autor, y la promoción del desarrollo cultural.

El partido alega que todos los derechos de autor no-comercial, al igual que su uso deberían ser completamente gratuitos, y que se debería promover el uso de reds p2p, en vez de criminalizar estas prácticas. También quieren que el “monopolio” actual que ha creado las leyes de derecho del autor sean limitadas a 5 años después de su publicación. Esta ultima sí que sería un cambio drástico a las leyes actuales en los EEUU que guardan estos derechos casi un singlo. El grupo también quiere que sean prohibidas las tecnologías de DRM. Su plataforma política también se extiende a las patentes farmacéuticas, alegando que esta práctica contribuye a cantidades de muertes prevenibles cada año en el Tercer Mundo.

Ciertamente una plataforma política bastante radical a comparación con el clima de corporaciones en el que vivimos. Pero como bibliotecaria, quiero ver más información accesible a todos, así es que celebro este logro, y estaré pendiente a ver qué nuevos cambios nos trae este grupo.

ALAS (América Latina en Acción Solidaria) was founded in December 2006 as a medium to mobilize Latin American society in favor of young children. The organization’s leadership includes renown artists, intellectuals, and business leaders throughout the Spanish and Portuguese speaking world, all working together to influence public policy and development in order to offer children zero to six years of age, access to health, education, proper nutrition.

Many of the organizations most famous members include Shakira, Juanes, Calle 13, Ruben Blades, Alejandro Sans, and many, many others, all offering benefit concerts, and regularly addressing presidents, ministers, and other influential people to spread their message.

The foundation divide its work into four main categories; consciousness raising, research, public policy, and work with the private sector. All geared towards the youngest children in a belief that intervention at this tender age can bring about the greatest results.

Interestingly ALAS is not set up to gather donations. Instead the foundation works with powerful business people, and international agencies to get these to make contributions and create needed programs geared towards young children across Latin America.

I invite you to take a look at the foundation’s website, and to read an article in today’s NYT discussing Shakira’s involvement in ALAS, and the group’s work. And better yet, get involved!

El liderazgo de la organización incluye artistas, intelectuales, y empresarios del mundo de hablar hispana y portuguesa, todos trabajando hacia la implementación de políticas públicas de desarrollo infantil temprano, para que todos los niños de 0 a 6 años tenga acceso a planes de salud, educación y nutrición.

La fundación reúne una lista impresionante de famosos a través de Latinoamérica, incluyendo a Shakira, Juanes, Calle 13, Ruben Blades, Alejandro Sans, y muchos, muchos más, todos ofreciendo conciertos de beneficencia, así mismo como presentando ante presidentes, ministros y otras personas influyentes para promover este proyecto.

La fundación divide su trabajo en cuatro categorías principales: concientización, desarrollo de contenidos, acuerdos con el sector público, y acuerdos con el sector privado. Cada uno un componente importante para crear mejores oportunidades para los niños más pequeños, sabiendo que la intervención a esta temprana edad traerá los mejores resultados.

Curiosamente ALAS no está diseñada para recoger donaciones, más bien el trabajo de la fundación es trabajar con poderosos empresarios, y agencias de desarrollo internacional para que sean estos los que hagan las grandes contribuciones y que implementen los programas necesarios a través de Latinoamérica.

Lo invito a mirar la página de la fundación, y a leer un artículo (en inglés) en el NYT de hoy discutiendo el rol de Shakira en la fundación, y el trabajo que esta ha logrado. Mejor aun, ¡ayude!

The current USA administrations is keeping its word of making more information available to everyone. Today, 120 into the new administration the site Data.gov has been launched. This new site aims at providing data in a variety of formats that web developers can convert into web applications.

Here’s an article in today’s Washington Post commenting on this project, and other White House initiatives towards being more accesible.

La actual administración en la Casa Blanca esta guardando su palabra de ser más accesible. Hoy, 120 días desde el cambio de mando están lanzando un nuevo sitio web llamado Data.gov que proveerá data en una variedad de formatos, y que cualquiera podrá convertir en aplicaciones web.

Recordando la última administración, me encanta ver que Obama realmente está tratando de crear un gobierno más transparente y accesible, todo por medio de una variedad de herramientas modernas. This picture has been doing the round through email and I just had to share it. I LOVE that we have a president now who has brought back intelligence as a cool thing. How did we ever get through eight years with a guy who was proud of being a C student? And who would tell others that they too could be a C student and become president of the USA. What he forgot to add was that you need a rich family and lots of connects to acomplish this. But we’re on to greener pastures!

I shared this image with a friend who commented that it didn’t look like a real library because “all the books look the same.” They do, and that’s what legal collections tend to look like. I’m assuming this is the Harvard Law School Library and Obama is probably standing in front of books of code for a particular state, or maybe a specific field of commerce. Which makes me wonder how anything gets done with it takes this many books to hold the rules to play by.

This photo was originally used when Obama became the first black editor to the Harvard Law Review back in 1990, but I don’t know who was the clever person who added the text.

Esta foto ha estado dando la vuelta por email y quería compartirla. Me encanta que ahora tenemos un presidente que nos ha regresado a la idea de que ser inteligente cosa de admirar. ¿Cómo fue que sobrevivimos ocho anos con un tipo orgulloso de su propia mediocridad? Además de eso, uno que le gustaba decirle a los demás que también podrían ser mediocres y aspirar a algún día ser presidentes de USA. Lo que siempre se le olvidaba agregar es que también hace falta tener una familia rica y muchas conexiones. Pero bueno, ¡ya estamos en mejores tiempos!

Le mostré esta foto a un amigo que comento que la foto no parecía en una biblioteca de verdad porque todos los libros se ven iguales. Si, son iguales, pero así son las colecciones de material legal. Asumo que la foto es en la biblioteca de derecho de Harvard, y que Obama está parado frente a libros de códigos de algún estado en particular, o alguna industria. Lo cual me lleva a preguntar ¿cómo es que logramos funcionar cuando se requieren tantos libros para guardar las reglas del juego?

Esta foto originalmente fue usada cuando Obama se convirtió en la primera persona negra en ser el editor del Harvard Law Review, en 1990, pero no sé quien fue el astuto que agrego el texto.
