Today I spent the morning at the Law Library of Congress attending their Orientation to Legal Research and the Use of Law Library Collections session. I first learned about this event from their blog ” In Custodia Legis” and was delighted to attend.

Hoy he pasado la mañana en la Biblioteca Legal del Congreso participando en su orientación a la investigación jurídica y el uso de la colección de la biblioteca legal. Me enteré de este evento a través de su blog “En Custodia Legis” y quede encantada de poder participar.

The session lasted 2.5 hours and we covered a lot of material. The session focused on federal legal research, and we worked with examples on the subject of home health care. The librarian offering the session did a great job by starting off with some background information about types of laws, and the difference between the types of resources, then showed us where to look for relevant information within their print and online collections.

La sesión duró 2,5 horas y cubrió una gran cantidad de material. La sesión se centró en la investigación judicial federal, y se trabajó con ejemplos sobre el tema de la atención de salud en el hogar. La bibliotecaria que ofreció la sesión hizo una labor magnifica. For the legislative branch the online resources we covered were Thomas.gov which offers legislative information, FDsys which is the government’s printing office, and USCODE whose name is self explanatory.

For the judicial branch we talked about the differences in courts, and how much of their decisions get published and become public. For district courts this number is only 5-10%. The courts of appeals publish between 45-55% through the Federal Reporter, and everything the Supreme Court decides becomes public. Curiously, Cornell University’s law school started publishing these Supreme Court decisions long before the government got around to it, so their online collection – LII - is more complete and goes back further than the resources on the Supreme Court’s website. We also looked at USCOURTS for all sorts of information on courts. This site also includes a biographical directory of all the federal judges.

Para los tribunales de distrito este número es sólo el 5-10%. At the end of the session we looked at a couple of resources outside the government. One of these was LLRX.com which offers a wide range of resources for legal professionals; best of all are their research guides, resources for librarians, and legal technology. The other site we looked at was the Law Librarians Society of Washington DC (LLSDC) which can help make local connections.

Uno de ellos fue LLRX.com que ofrece una amplia gama de recursos para profesionales del derecho, lo mejor de todo son sus guías de investigación, recursos para bibliotecarios, y tecnología jurídica. If all of these resources look a bit advance, and you need to start at the beginning take a look at Kids in the House which will give you some of the basic terminology, and will explain how bills are passed. The site offers resources divided by school level.

At the end of the month the Yale Law Library will run a three day pilot program allowing students to check out a therapy dog for 30 minutes at a time! The project is a creative way to try and address student stress while they are studying, and students seems excited about the project.

A finales del mes de la Biblioteca  Jurídica de Yale se ejecutará un programa piloto de tres días que le permite a los estudiantes a prestar por periodos de 30 minutos un perro de terapia!  El proyecto es una manera creativa para tratar de abordar el estrés de los estudiantes mientras estudian, y estos parecen entusiasmados con el proyecto.

If all goes well, and the dog is doing well, maybe they can get some cats for the library next!

Si todo va bien y al perro le va bien, ¡de pronto puedan conseguir un par de gatos para la biblioteca!

“The Language of Conservation” is a program that hopes to promote awareness of the environment through poetry installations in zoos, and participating public libraries (New Orleans, Milwaukee, Little Rock, Jacksonville, and Chicago). Each city will have a poet in residence who will get the chance to interact with the zoo animals, wildlife biologists and exhibit designers to create exhibits which will highlight poetry that celebrated nature and the connections between species.

“El lenguaje de la Conservación” es un programa que pretende promover el conocimiento del medio ambiente mediante instalaciones de poesía en parques zoológicos y varias bibliotecas públicas que participan en el proyecto (Nueva Orleans, Milwaukee, Little Rock, Jacksonville, y Chicago). Cada ciudad tendrá un poeta en residencia que tendrá la oportunidad de interactuar con los animales del zoológico, biólogos y diseñadores de las exhibiciones para crear exhibiciones que destacan poesía que celebra la naturaleza y las conexiones entre las especies.

The program is a collaboration between the ALA Public Program Office and Poets House, a national poetry library and literary center.

What a lovely idea, and lucky poets who get to hang out at the zoo!

Last night I received an email from Julia Watson with the Online Education Database and she shared this list of the 10 Most Impressive Elementary School Libraries in the U.S. The list caught my attention because of the amazing stories included here. On this list you will find stories about school libraries involved in staging Shakespeare plays, and another that produces its own energy! In general they are encouraging stories of libraries who are embracing new technologies, and helping form young minds.

This afternoon I attended an ALA webinar about E-Government. The session offered some good sites where we can find government information (local, state, and federal), shared some information about patron use of these resources, and offered some statistical information on the subject.

Esta tarde asistí a un seminario web de ALA sobre E-Gobierno. La sesión ofreció información sobre algunos sitios buenos donde podemos encontrar información gubernamental (a nivel local, estatal y federal), algo de información sobre los usuarios de estos recursos, y algunas estadísticas sobre el tema.

The first panelist was Nancy Fedrericks, e-government librarian, Pasco County Public Library (Florida). Fedrericks shared some resources found at her local library, including a section on their website, a blog, and some online tools to help patrons use these resources. She talked about the use these resources get at her library, and mentioned that it is best to be very careful about privacy issues when helping patrons with these resources, and when at all possible ask them to get help from a friend or family member, instead of the librarian.

El primera presentadora fue Nancy Fedrericks, bibliotecaria de e-gobierno en la Biblioteca Pública del Condado de Pasco (Florida). Fedrericks compartio algunos recursos que se encuentran en su biblioteca local, incluyendo una sección en su página web, un blog, y algunas herramientas en línea para ayudar a los usuarios a utilizar estos recursos. She also shared the website LawHelp.org which offers help finding local legal help and information. The site offers resources for every state. Fredericks also has older presentations on this topic on Webjunction. The next presenter was Bill Sudduth, Head, Government Information and Microforms, Newspapers and Maps, University of South Carolina. Sudduth shared a number of website that are great examples of how to best offer e-gov resources. His collection of site included e-gov at every level. At the federal level there is USA.gov, and GPO Access, which offered free electronic access to documents produced by the Federal Government. Virginia.gov was a good example of a state site, and on the local level, Boston’s website took the top prize!

El siguiente ponente fue Bill Sudduth, Jefe de Información Gubernamental, Microformas, Prensa y Mapas de la Universidad de Carolina del Sur. Sudduth compartió una serie de sitio web que son excelentes ejemplos de la mejor manera de ofrecer recursos de e-gov. Su colección de sitio incluye e-gobierno a todos los niveles. The third and last presenter was John Bertot, Director, Center for Library & Information Innovation, University of Maryland. Bertot talked about the intersection of public libraries and E-government. He began by sharing a map of all the public libraries in the USA commenting that they really cover the entire nation, and that now that governments at every level are cutting resources, the public library has often had to fill this gap.

El tercer y último presentador fue John Bertot, Director del Centro de Innovación de Bibliotecas e Información de la Universidad de Maryland. Bertot habló sobre la intersección de las bibliotecas públicas y el gobierno electrónico. Bertot share some information from the Center for Library & Information Innovation (CLII) in the College of Information Studies at the University of Maryland illustrating this relationship between libraries and e-gov. This site includes a lot of statistical information on the subject, and these handy fliers (this is the e-gov one), that will give you a great starting point if you need to advocate for these services at your library.

Bertot compartió información del Centro de Innovación de Bibliotecas e Información (CLII) en el Colegio de Estudios de la Información en la Universidad de Maryland que ilustra esta relación entre las bibliotecas y el e-gov. Este sitio incluye una gran cantidad de información estadística sobre el tema y estos útiles folletos (este es el de e-gov) que le dará un gran punto de partida si necesita abogar por estos servicios en su biblioteca.

At the end Bertot talked a little about the increasing need for librarians to be able to fully understand how to work with e-gov material. Because of this need the University of Maryland has established a program for E-Government Librarianship!

Al final Bertot habló un poco acerca de que cada vez es mayor la necesidad de que como bibliotecarios podamos trabajar de manera competente con este material. Debido a esta necesidad la Universidad de Maryland ha establecido un programa de Bibliotecologia para E-Gobierno!

Yesterday I spent the afternoon at the Boston Book Festival. This is the second year the festival has been organized, and it seems to get bigger every year. While at the book festival I visited a number of stands of book stores, writing workshops, educational program, and cultural organizations.

While at the festival I chatted for a while with the OLPC folk, saw some of the local NPR personalities, and browsed a lot of interesting books.  I also saw a group trying to beat Jack Kerouac’s record established by writing up a 120 feet scroll which became On The Road. By 4 pm they were still a long ways away from giving Kerouac a run for his money.

While at the book festival I also attended a talk titled “Home and Away,” whose two guest speakers were Bill Bryson, and Tony Hiss; the event was hosted by WBUR’s Robin Young. The two authors talked about the concept of traveling, and how at times we can travel throughout the world and time without leaving out homes. Bryson as always was full of great jokes and interesting tidbits of random information.

I’m already looking forward to next year’s festival!

Ayer me pase la tarde en el Festival del Libro de Boston. Este es el segundo ano en que se organiza el festival, y parece que cada vez creen el popularidad. Mientras estaba en el festival de libros visite varios stands de librerías, talleres de escritura, el programa educativo, y organizaciones culturales.

Mientras estaba en el festival charlé un rato con la gente del proyecto OLPC, vi algunas de las personalidades de la radio publica, y vi un montón de libros interesantes. También vi un grupo que intenta batir el récord establecido por Jack Kerouac al redactar el libro El Camino sobre un rollo de papel de 120 pies. A las 4 pm aún estaban muy lejos lejos de realmente hacerle la competencia a Kerouac.

Mientras que en el festival de libro que también asistí a una charla titulada “Home and Away”, cuyos dos invitados fueron Bill Bryson, y Tony Hiss, el evento fue organizado por Robin Young, presentadora de la emisora radial WBUR. Los dos autores hablaron sobre el concepto de viajar y cómo a veces podemos viajar por todo el mundo y a través del tiempo sin dejar nuestra casa. Bryson como siempre estaba lleno de chistes e interesantes minucias de información.

Last weekend I was attending the annual SALALM conference and heard about a lot of great projects relating to libraries and Latin American. The Cuban Rafter Phenomenon: A Unique Sea Exodus project is one of them. I heard about this project on a panel titled “Documenting in Times of Adversity, Survival and Hope.” María Rita Corticelli from the University of Exeter was the official presenter, but Holly Ackerman from Duke University was there as well, since this project was derived from her PhD program with the help of a few other scholars in the area.

The site focuses on the Cubans who left the island during the raft crisis of 1994, gathering interviews, photographs, videos. The site is divided into three main areas; Part I – What is the Rafter Crisis? ; Part II – Interdicted: The Rafters Go to Guantánamo ; Part III – Crisis in the Wider Caribbean – The Case of the Cayman Islands. Each section is further subdivided.

While going through the collection I notice that the topic is covered from a variety of viewpoints, including the rafters themselves, US Coast guard officials, Cuban children, and local politicians. And all aspects of the phenomenon are documented as well. You’ll find photographs of the rafts, several timelines of key events, an interactive map, and scanned documents.

Be aware that the site has some very obnoxious background noise.

El fin de semana pasado asistía a la conferencia anual de SALALM y me entere de una cantidad de proyectos super interesantes relacionados con bibliotecas y América Latina. The Cuban Rafter Phenomenon: A Unique Sea Exodus (El fenómeno del balsero cubano: una experiencia única de éxodo) es uno de ellos. Me enteré de este proyecto en un panel titulado “La documentación en tiempos de adversidad, supervivencia y esperanza.” María Rita Corticelli de la Universidad de Exeter fue el presentador oficial, pero Holly Ackerman de la Universidad Duke estaba allí también, ya que este proyecto se deriva de su programa de doctorado con la ayuda de algunos otros expertos en el campo.

El sitio se centra en los cubanos que abandonaron la isla durante la crisis balsa de 1994, y recopila entrevistas, fotografías, y videos. Can Fox News really be this detached from reality? Apparently so. Here’s the headline to one of their recent stories; “Are Libraries Necessary, or a Waste of Tax Money?” The report has so little substance I don’t understand how Anna Dalvates, the author, can even pretend this is actual news, or that tax dollars spent on the library can be a waste of money. Clearly Dalventes hasn’t visited her local library and time soon, nor hasn’t read any of the articles which explain the benefit of a library to the community, or how during difficult economic times, usages increases (here is just one example of many).

But, not to worry, her audience clearly realizes this woman is totally out of touch with reality. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and read the comment!

¿Puede ser cierto que Fox News este tan despegado de la realidad? Parece que sí. Este es el título de una de sus historias recientes, “¿Son las bibliotecas necesarias, o una pérdida de dinero de los impuestos?” El informe tiene tan poca sustancia que no entiendo cómo Anna Dalvates, la autora, puede pretender que esto es una noticia real, o que los impuestos que se destinen a la biblioteca puedan ser una pérdida de dinero. Es evidente que Dalventes hace mucho que no visita su biblioteca, ni no ha leído alguno de los artículos que demuestran los beneficios de una biblioteca a la comunidad, o cómo durante tiempos económicos difíciles se aumenta el uso de estas (he aquí sólo un ejemplo de muchos).

Pero no se preocupen, su público se da cuenta claramente que esta mujer está totalmente fuera de contacto con la realidad. Desplácese hasta la parte inferior de la página y la los comentario!
