On that same SALALM panel titled “Documenting in Times of Adversity, Survival and Hope” my friend Lynn Shirey presented on a newly acquired collection of slides by photographer Andrés Romero Spethman, documenting Chilean Protest Murals during the dictatorship of Gen. Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990). The collection was recently purchased by Harvard and is currently available online for everyone to use.

In many cases these slides are the only record left of many of these murals, since they were quickly painted over by the regime. The murals document people’s anger, frustration and cries for help during the dictatorship.

While going through the collection you are likely to find many a familiar face, including Pablo Neruda, Gabriela Mistral, Víctor Jara, president Salvador Allende, and many other famous Chileans.

En ese mismo panel de SALALM titulado “La documentación en tiempos de adversidad, supervivencia y esperanza” mi amiga Lynn Shirey presentó sobre una colección de diapositivas por el fotógrafo Andrés Romero Spethman, recién adquiridas documentando los Murales de Protesta Chilenos durante la dictadura del general Augusto Pinochet (1973 – 1990). Last weekend I was attending the annual SALALM conference and heard about a lot of great projects relating to libraries and Latin American. The Cuban Rafter Phenomenon: A Unique Sea Exodus project is one of them. I heard about this project on a panel titled “Documenting in Times of Adversity, Survival and Hope.” María Rita Corticelli from the University of Exeter was the official presenter, but Holly Ackerman from Duke University was there as well, since this project was derived from her PhD program with the help of a few other scholars in the area.

The site focuses on the Cubans who left the island during the raft crisis of 1994, gathering interviews, photographs, videos. The site is divided into three main areas; Part I – What is the Rafter Crisis? ; Part II – Interdicted: The Rafters Go to Guantánamo ; Part III – Crisis in the Wider Caribbean – The Case of the Cayman Islands. Each section is further subdivided.

While going through the collection I notice that the topic is covered from a variety of viewpoints, including the rafters themselves, US Coast guard officials, Cuban children, and local politicians. And all aspects of the phenomenon are documented as well. You’ll find photographs of the rafts, several timelines of key events, an interactive map, and scanned documents.

Be aware that the site has some very obnoxious background noise.

El fin de semana pasado asistía a la conferencia anual de SALALM y me entere de una cantidad de proyectos super interesantes relacionados con bibliotecas y América Latina. The Cuban Rafter Phenomenon: A Unique Sea Exodus (El fenómeno del balsero cubano: una experiencia única de éxodo) es uno de ellos. Me enteré de este proyecto en un panel titulado “La documentación en tiempos de adversidad, supervivencia y esperanza.” María Rita Corticelli de la Universidad de Exeter fue el presentador oficial, pero Holly Ackerman de la Universidad Duke estaba allí también, ya que este proyecto se deriva de su programa de doctorado con la ayuda de algunos otros expertos en el campo.

El sitio se centra en los cubanos que abandonaron la isla durante la crisis balsa de 1994, y recopila entrevistas, fotografías, y videos. El sitio se divide en tres áreas principales: Parte I – ¿Cuál es la Crisis de los Balseros? ; Parte II – Prohibido: Los balseros van a Guantánamo; Parte III – Crisis en el Caribe – El Caso de las Islas Caimán. Cada sección se subdivide.

Al analizar la colección me doy cuenta de que el tema se trata de una variedad de puntos de vista, incluyendo los balseros, funcionarios de la Guardia Costera de EEUU, niños cubanos y varios políticos. Todos los aspectos del fenómeno se documentan también. Usted encontrará fotografías de las balsas, líneas de tiempo de varios de los eventos clave, un mapa interactivo y documentos escaneados.

Tenga en cuenta que el sitio incluye un ruido de fondo muy desagradable.

Con ganas de celebrar el bicentenario de Colombia aquí recojo información sobre algunos eventos y colecciones que se han organizado en Colombia y virtualmente. ¡A celebrar se dijo!

El proyecto Libro al Viento se ha asociado con la Biblioteca Luis Ángel Arango (BLAA) para traer varias biografías sobre los grandes de Colombia al público en general. A diferencia de otras publicaciones, esta colección de bicentenario también se ofrece en formato digital. Los tres títulos de la colección son,“¡Viva la Pola!”, “¡Soy Caldas!” y “La antorcha brillante” (biografía de Antonio Nariño).

La BLAA también está organizando otros eventos que se llevan a cabo en la biblioteca. Si visita la BLAA encontrara varias exposiciones sobre el bicentenario, incluyendo “Palabras que nos cambiaron: lenguaje y poder en la independencia”, “La caricatura en Colombia a partir de la independencia” (esta incluye recorrido virtual), y “Habeas Corpus: que tengas [un] cuerpo [para exponer].” La biblioteca también organiza el XV Congreso Colombia de Historia que se llevara a cado del 26 al 30 de julio de 2010. Además tiene otra página que recoge artículos sobre la independencia de Colombia y otros países suramericanos. Y como si todo esto no fuera suficiente también tiene un blog donde están recogiendo noticias sobre más eventos del bicentenario.

El ministerio de cultura también tiene una cantidad de eventos programados, al igual que una cantidad de colecciones en línea que están disponibles para todos. Vea aquí 200 años de historia Colombiana, escuche la música que hemos gozado por dos siglos. Vea los Diálogos de la Independencia; aquí encontrara una seria de videos por tema de una cantidad de historiadores tratando varios temas de la historia Colombiana. 1810: Independencias al Aire recoge 22 capítulos de una serie radial recrea algunos de hechos históricos y de cotidianidad Colombiana. La pagina titulada Centros Municipales de Memorias tiene un mapa interactivo que le dará mas información sobre las celebraciones que se llevan a cabo en cada localidad. La Línea de Tiempo le mostrara imágenes y otra información de los últimos doscientos años, década por década. La Agenda de Celebraciones le dará más información sobre 32 eventos que se llevan a cado a lo largo y ancho de la nación.

El sistema de BiblioRed está organizando un ciclo de conferencia que trata nuestra historia, y algunas que tratan la historia de las comunidades indígenas. Todas con entrada libre. El Museo Nacional monto una cantidad de colecciones en línea que tratan el tema del bicentenario. Aquí encontrara Carteles, cartillas, y radio. Y aquí hay una lista de los eventos que se llevan a cabo en Bogotá.

Eager to celebrate the Colombia’s bicentenary I’ve gather some information about events and collections that have been organized in Colombia and virtually. Let the celebrations begin!

The Project Libro al Viento has partnered with the Luis Ángel Arango Library (BLAA) to bring several biographies of the great men and women of Colombia to the general public. Unlike other publications, this bicentennial collection will also be offered in digital format. The three titles in the collection are, “¡Viva la Pola!”, “¡Soy Caldas!” y “La antorcha brillante” (biografía de Antonio Nariño). The BLAA is also organizing other events that are being held in the library. If you visit the BLAA you’ll find several exhibitions on the bicentennial, including “Palabras que nos cambiaron: lenguaje y poder en la independencia”, “La caricatura en Colombia a partir de la independencia” (this includes a virtual tour), and “Habeas Corpus: que tengas [un] cuerpo [para exponer].” The library also organizes the XV Congress on Colombian History that market will take 26 to July 30, 2010. As if all this were not enough it also has a blog where you can get more news about other events of the bicentennial.

The Ministry of Culture also has a number of scheduled events, as well as a number of online collections that are available to everyone. See Diálogos de la Independencia, here you will find a series of videos by subject of a number of historians discussing various topics in Colombian history. 1810: Independencias al Aire contains 22 chapters of a radio series which recreates some of the historical facts and daily realities which make up our history. The page entitled Centros Municipales de Memorias has an interactive map that will give you more information on the celebrations that take place in each location. The Línea de Tiempo will show images and information of the last two hundred years, decade by decade. The Agenda de Celebraciones will give you more information on 32 events that are taking place across the nation.

The BiblioRed system is organizing a series of conference on our history, some dealing with the history of indigenous communities. Admission to all these conferences is free. The National Museum mounted a number of online collections that address the bicentennial. Here you will find posters, brochures, and radio audio. And here is a list of events that are taking place in Bogotá.

At the beginning of the month I was in Montreal and got to visit La Grande Bibliothèque! This library is one of the city’s largest public libraries, and the collection is part of the Library and National Archives of Québec. I presume that since this region of Canada includes a vibrant separatist movement they feel the need to have their own national library and archives.  Politics aside, library holds about 4 millions items, most of which are in French, and 30% in English. This library is one of the most popular libraries in the francophone world, and I when I visited on a Sunday, the place really was full of people.

¡A principios del mes estuve en Montreal y pude visitar La Grande Bibliothèque! Esta biblioteca es una de las bibliotecas públicas mas grandes de la ciudad y la colección es parte de la Biblioteca y Archivos Nacionales de Québec. Supongo que como esta región de Canadá incluye un movimiento separatista vibrante que deben sentir la necesidad de tener su propia biblioteca y archivos nacionales. Política aparte, la biblioteca cuenta con cerca de 4 millones de artículos, la mayoría de los cuales están en francés y 30% en Inglés. Esta biblioteca es una de las colecciones más populares en el mundo de habla francesa, y el domingo que estuve de visita, el lugar realmente estaba lleno de gente.

On their website the library breakups their various collections with brief explanations of what you may expect to find. They have a large collection covering Quebec’s Heritage, archives that date back to the 17th century, resources for genealogical work, maps, government publications, and material which has been digitized, including an RSS for the most recent additions to this collection.

En su sitio web de la biblioteca separa sus diversas colecciones con una breve explicación de lo que usted puede encontrar en cada una. Tienen una gran colección que abarca el Patrimonio de Québec, archivos que se remontan al siglo 17, recursos para el trabajo de genealogía, mapas, publicaciones gubernamentales, y material que ha sido digitalizado, incluyendo un RSS para las adiciones más recientes a esta colección.

The library also offers many of the usual services you would expect from a large public library; they have a calendar of events which includes a number of activities for small children, guided tours of the library in French or English, computer workshops, and ongoing exhibitions.

La biblioteca también ofrece muchos de los servicios habituales que cabría esperar de una gran biblioteca pública; tienen un calendario de eventos que incluye una serie de actividades para los más pequeños, visitas guiadas a la biblioteca en francés o en Inglés, talleres de computación, y exposiciones en curso.

While at ALA I met a couple of very cool librarians, one of which has a blog I have been following for some time now. Here’s a brief description of these great woman and their projects.

Hannah Winkler is the woman behind the Global Librarianship blog. I’ve had this blog on my RSS feed for some time now, and I’m constantly reading interesting news about the library field the world over. She believes that “that librarians have a social responsibility to address the literacy conditions around the world and to try to equalize access to electronic information.” You can also follow her on Twitter @Globallib.

Sara Wingate Gray is the brains and muscles behind The Itinerant Poetry Librarian project. This amazing woman has spent the last several years roaming much of Europe and North American offering library services through a mobile library that goes wherever she goes. Can Fox News really be this detached from reality? Apparently so. Here’s the headline to one of their recent stories; “Are Libraries Necessary, or a Waste of Tax Money?” The report has so little substance I don’t understand how Anna Dalvates, the author, can even pretend this is actual news, or that tax dollars spent on the library can be a waste of money. Clearly Dalventes hasn’t visited her local library and time soon, nor hasn’t read any of the articles which explain the benefit of a library to the community, or how during difficult economic times, usages increases (here is just one example of many).

But, not to worry, her audience clearly realizes this woman is totally out of touch with reality. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and read the comment!

¿Puede ser cierto que Fox News este tan despegado de la realidad? Parece que sí. Este es el título de una de sus historias recientes, “¿Son las bibliotecas necesarias, o una pérdida de dinero de los impuestos?” El informe tiene tan poca sustancia que no entiendo cómo Anna Dalvates, la autora, puede pretender que esto es una noticia real, o que los impuestos que se destinen a la biblioteca puedan ser una pérdida de dinero. Es evidente que Dalventes hace mucho que no visita su biblioteca, ni no ha leído alguno de los artículos que demuestran los beneficios de una biblioteca a la comunidad, o cómo durante tiempos económicos difíciles se aumenta el uso de estas (he aquí sólo un ejemplo de muchos).

Pero no se preocupen, su público se da cuenta claramente que esta mujer está totalmente fuera de contacto con la realidad. Desplácese hasta la parte inferior de la página y la los comentario!

I’m in DC for the ALA annual conference, before I had even arrived in DC proper, I was already learning about interesting stuff going on. This morning I ran into my friend Cindy on the bus and she told me about ALA’s Unconference. I’d never heard about this before, but apparently this was it’s second year. Their wikipedia entry described the event as a “participant-guided experience that harnesses the unstructured conversations people usually have between conference sessions into the conference itself.” The unconference takes place the day before the actual conference takes place and registration is free! (But space is limited.)

Looking at a blog entry about the previous unconference it seems that while registration to this event is free, participation is mandatory. The 2009 session asked that each individual attending the Unconference suggest a presentation they would like to give or a discussion topic they would be willing to facilitate. The organizers then took this information, presented it to all those who registered for the event and then helped set up seven presentation and thirty discussion topics.

This seems like a great way to channel people’s ideas, creativity and enthusiasm for the library field. And hopefully folks will be able to go back home and actually implement some of the ideas discussed at this event. This all sounds very, very interesting! Now I want to find someone who has actually attended one of these to hear more about it.

Estoy en D.C. para la conferencia  anual de la ALA, antes de mi llegada a lo que es propiamente D.C. ya estaba escuchando sobre eventos interesantes. Esta mañana me encontré con mi amiga Cindy en el bus y me contó sobre la “Unconference de ALA” (la no-conferencia de ALA). Yo nunca había oído hablar de esto pero aparentemente este ya es el segundo ano de este evento. Su entrada en Wikipedia describe el evento como una “experiencia guiada por participante que aprovecha las conversaciones no estructuradas que suelen tener lugar entre las sesiones de la misma conferencia” La no-conferencia se lleva a cabo el día antes de la conferencia tiene lugar y el registro es gratis! (Pero el cupo es limitado.)

Mirando una entrada de blog sobre la sesión anterior de la no-conferencia parece ser que aunque la inscripción a este evento es gratuita, la participación es obligatoria. La sesión de 2009 pidió que cada individuo que asistieron a la no-conferencia sugiriese una presentación que les gustaría dar o un tema de discusión que estarían dispuestos a facilitar. Los organizadores entonces tomaron esta información y la presentaron a todos aquellos que se inscribieron para el evento y luego ayudaron a establecer siete presentación y treinta temas de discusión.

Esto parece una excelente manera de canalizar las ideas de la gente, su creatividad y el entusiasmo por el área de la biblioteconomía. Espero que la estos participantes puedan regresar a sus lugares de trabajo yrealmente puedan poner en práctica algunas de las ideas que se discutieron en este evento. Todo esto suena muy, muy interesante! Ahora quiero encontrar a alguien que realmente ha asistido a uno de ellos para oír más sobre él.

Colombia Aprende is an educational site created by the Colombian Ministry of Education which aims at offering access to educational tools to anyone who has access to the web. The site has been up and running for 6 years, and by now gathers over 20,000 resources, and has over a million visitors every month.

Information on the site is divided into a number of categories to facilitate searching. Resources span all levels of education, from elementary education to college, to advance research. Each category will offer activities, additional links (Labeled Edusitios), and resources appropriate for that level of education. Some of the resources I found in the various Edusitios were great – I found Atlas de las Culturas Afro Colombianas, Inglés para todos, and Expediciones Botánicas del siglo XXI among many others.

There are also a number of virtual forums  under the section titled Enrédese, designed to connect users and provide a space for the discussion of ideas and collaboration (this section requires you to register with the site). The section titled Docentes Publican offers a place where participants can share their publications.

This site also offers a calendar of events including activities that have an educational purpose. There are a few more section which are currently under construction, including a wiki, a blog, and a few more places which propose educational competitions.

Colombia Aprende es un sitio educativo creado por el Ministerio de Educación que tiene como objetivo ofrecer acceso a herramientas educativas para todo quien tenga acceso a la web. El sitio funciona hace 6 años y hoy reúne más de 20.000 recursos y tiene más de un millón de visitantes cada mes.

La información del sitio se divide en una serie de categorías para facilitar la búsqueda. Los recursos abarcan todos los niveles educativos, desde la educación primaria, a la universidad, y para la investigación avanzada. Cada categoría ofrecen actividades, enlaces adicionales (bajo el titulo de Edusitios) y recursos adecuados para cada nivel de educación. Algunos de los recursos que encontré en varios Edusitios incluyen – el Atlas de las Culturas afro colombianas, inglés para todos y Expediciones botánicas del Siglo XXI, entre muchos otros.

También hay una serie de foros virtuales bajo el titulo de Enrédese, estos están diseñados para conectar a los usuarios y proporcionar un espacio para la discusión de ideas y la colaboración (esta sección requiere que usted se registra en el sitio). La sección titulada Docentes Publican ofrece un lugar donde los participantes pueden compartir sus publicaciones.

Este sitio también ofrece un calendario de eventos que incluyen actividades que tienen un propósito educativo. Hay varias secciones adicionales que se encuentran actualmente en construcción, incluyendo un wiki, un blog, y algunos lugares más que proporcionan concursos educativos.

RevisteroVirtual.com is a relatively new site that offers online access to a number of major Colombian magazines. The site, which launched in 2009, offers access to about 30 titles, including M2M, Semana, Revista Dini, Jet-Set, Dinero, Revista de Logística, El Malpensante y Mobiliari.

To use the site you will have to create an account, but access to most (not all) the magazines is free.

RevisteroVirtual.com es un sitio relativamente nuevo que ofrece acceso en línea a una serie de importantes revistas colombianas. El sitio, lanzado en 2009, ofrece acceso a cerca de 30 títulos, entre ellos M2M, Semana, Revista Dini, Jet Set, Dinero, Revista de Logística, El Malpensante y Mobiliari.

Para utilizar el sitio que usted tendrá que crear una cuenta, pero el acceso a la mayoría de revistas (no todas) es gratuito.

Earlier this week I got to visit the Toronto Public Library. Before arriving there I had seen some beautiful pictures of the main branch and had read that it is the largest urban public library system in the world. Of course I had to see it myself.

The Toronto Public Library system has 99 branch libraries and holds 11 millions items! The library was established in York Mechanic’s Institute in 1830, 4 years before the Town of York became the City of Toronto. As early as 1885 the library began collecting material in a variety of languages, initially buying books in German and French. In 1977 the New Metropolitan Toronto Library opens (the branch I visited). In 2001 the library was the second most used public library in the world, after Hong Kong; very impressive numbers considering that all of Canada only has about 34 million people.

Like many major public libraries, the Toronto Public Library offers help to newcomers and people who are learning English. All branches of the library have books, DVDs, and CDs in a multitude of languages, Citizenship Preparation material, and English classes for newcomers.

My library visit in Toronto was delightful, the librarians I ran into were very helpful, and since the library is right downtown and right next to the subway, after visiting the library I continued to go see the rest of the downtown area.

A principios de esta semana tube la oportunidad de visitar la Biblioteca Pública de Toronto. Antes de llegar allí había visto algunas imágenes hermosas de la rama principal de la biblioteca y había leído que es el sistema urbano de bibliotecas públicas más grande en el mundo. Por supuesto que tenía que ver por misma.

El sistema de la Biblioteca Pública de Toronto tiene 99 sucursales y 1 millones artículos! La biblioteca se creó por el Instituto de Mecánica York en 1830, 4 años antes de la ciudad de York se convirtiera en la ciudad de Toronto. Ya en 1885 la biblioteca comenzó a recoger materiales en una variedad de idiomas, en un principio la compra fue de libros en alemán y francés. En 1977 la Nueva Biblioteca Metropolitana de Toronto abre (la rama visité). En 2001 la biblioteca fue la segunda biblioteca pública más utilizado en el mundo, después de Hong Kong; un número muy impresionante teniendo en cuenta que todo Canadá sólo tiene alrededor de 34 millones de personas.

Al igual que muchas bibliotecas públicas importantes, la Biblioteca Pública de Toronto ofrece ayuda a los recién llegados y las personas que están aprendiendo inglés. Todas las sucursales de la biblioteca tiene libros, DVDs y CDs en una multitud de idiomas, material de Preparación de Ciudadanía, y las clases de Inglés para los recién llegados.

Mi visita a la biblioteca en Toronto fue una delicia, los bibliotecarios que me encontré me ayudaron con el mayor de los gustos, y puesto que la biblioteca esta en justo en el centro de la ciudad y justo al lado del metro después de visitar la biblioteca continué mi paseo por el resto de la zona centro de la ciudad.
