Here’s a great documentary about the Library of Congress which C-SPAN has made available for free! The documentary is an hour and a half and showcases the marvels of the collection, including many interesting stories about specific items, and the Jefferson building. If you have already visited the LOC this documentary will give you lots of additional information and closeup views of the art in the buildings and the treasures of the collection. If you haven’t been to the LOC yet, this documentary will certainly whet you appetite.

Sitios de Memoria en América Latina gathers information about human rights across Latin America, which has been produced by the 27 organizations from Latin American countries that make part of the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience. The Latin American countries participating in this are mainly from the Southern Cone and Central America, with a noticeable absence from the Andean countries.

Some of the information you can find on the site include publications from previous conferences, a map of clandestine detention centers in Argentina, a calendar of events including photographic exhibits documenting human rights in Latin America, and an online forum that you can join for free after filling in an online form.

There is also a digital library which includes photographs, videos, audio, manuscripts and iconography that create memory about human rights in Latin America.

The site functions in Spanish and English.

Sitios de Memoria en América Latina reúne información producido por las 27 organizaciones de países latinoamericanos que hacen parte de la Coalición Internacional de Sitios de Conciencia, sobre de los derechos humanos en toda América Latina. Los países latinoamericanos que participan son principalmente del Cono Sur y América Central, con una notable ausencia de los países andinos.

Parte de la información que puede encontrar en el sitio incluyen publicaciones de conferencias anteriores, un mapa de centros de detención clandestinos en Argentina, un calendario de eventos, incluyendo exposiciones fotográficas que documentan los derechos humanos en América Latina, y un foro en línea al que puede unirse de forma gratuita después de llenar un formulario en línea.

También hay una biblioteca digital que incluye fotografiás, videos, audio, manuscritos e iconografía que hacen memoria a la situación de los derechos humanos en Latinoamérica.

A few months ago the BBC launched a new archive of world music. During the ten years that Radio 3 has been on the air the program has been visiting people all around the world and making professional quality recording of dying folk music. The idea of this new archive is to make these recording available to a much larger public.

As I write this I’m listening to the first of two programs about Tangos. I like that the recording begins with some background information about Tangos, including some Argentina’s history, other types of music that have influence tangos, and of course there are samples of some of the most memorable songs.

You can browse the collection by program, schedule, presenters, or through this great interactive map.

Hace unos meses la BBC puso en marcha un nuevo archivo de música del mundo. Durante los diez años que Radio 3 ha estado al aire el programa ha estado visitando a gente de todo el mundo y produciendo grabaciones de calidad profesional música popular en vía de extinción. La idea de este nuevo archivo es poner estas grabaciones a disposición de un público mucho más grande.

Mientras escribo esto estoy escuchando el primero de dos programas sobre tangos. Me gusta que la grabación empieza con información general acerca del tangos, incluyendo algo de historia Argentina, otros tipos de música que han influido al tango, y por supuesto, hay muestras de algunas de las canciones más memorables.

Archivo Chile is a site that gathers information in all formats primarily about Chile’s social/popular movements, and secondarily about Latin America. The site also emphases human rights, and leftist politics.

The site is rather cumbersome to navigate, but full of interesting material. You can find documents on Salvador Allende, Gabriela Mistral, Violeta Parra, and Miguel Enríque Espinoza. You’ll also find information on various women’s movements in Chile, resistance movement by the country’s various indigenous groups, and “Los 119“. Los 119 were a group of 119 people who were disappeared during Pinochet’s rule.

There are also sections for music (including mp3 files), and the arts.

The site also allows for participation, and offers a section where people can share news, and memories about the millions who disappeared during Chile’s dirty war.

In terms of the rest of Latino America, you can find documentation of Colombia’s Camilo Torres, and Argentina/Cuba’s Che Guevara, among others.

Archivo Chile es un sitio que inicialmente recopila información en todos los formatos sobre los movimientos sociales populares en Chile, además de incluir información sobre el resto de América Latina. El sitio también énfasis de los derechos humanos, y la política de izquierda.

El sitio es bastante complicado para navegar, pero está lleno de material interesante. Usted puede encontrar documentos sobre Salvador Allende, Gabriela Mistral, Violeta Parra, y Miguel Enrique Espinoza. RTVE.es is Spain’s Radio and Television Corporation, and between news reports and other stories they also include reviews of the world’s literary classics. Presenter Esther Lorenzo creates brief descriptions of the story, gives some historical background, gives a little description of the specific edition she read, and encourages the listener to read the classics. Currently the archives include classics originally written in all languages, although in the case of book written in languages other than Spanish,  Lorenzo is reviewing their Spanish translations.

The British Library is constantly coming up with new great projects to make their collections accessible to all; In the latest, Archival Sound Recordings, they have digitized all of their audio collections and made them available to the world. The full collection gathers about 28,000 items which include recordings of singing, yelling, speaking, banging, and all kinds of other sounds. These recordings have been gathered over the years, and include items from all over the world.

La Biblioteca Británica está constantemente creando nuevos proyectos ofrecer sus colecciones; El último proyecto esArchival Sound Recordings donde han digitalizado todas sus colecciones de audio y poner las grabaciones a disposición del mundo. La colección completa reúne alrededor de 28.000 objetos que incluyen grabaciones de cantos, gritos, dialogo, ruidos de goles, y todo tipo de sonidos. Estas grabaciones han sido acumulados a lo largo de los años e incluir elementos de todo el mundo.

When you visit the project’s main website you’ll find a selection of highlights, popular tags associated with the recordings, and a map that will help you browse the collection by region. One of these collections is a survey of dialects from across the UK. Here’s you’ll find a map with pins, and each pin will open up a specif file demonstrating the local dialect.

The collection can also be browsed by topic. For instance there is a heading for Environment and Nature, with further subdivisions by map, family, or location. If you choose the family link you will find a breakdown by scientific name, and then a couple recording under each heading. The other main topical headings include; Arts, literature and performance; Classical music; Jazz and popular music; Oral history; Sound recording history; and World and traditional music. Every audio file also includes full metadata.

The Chicano Studies Center at UCLA has uploaded over 41,000 songs to an online repository titled Musica de la Frontera. A number of these songs date back as early as 1900, and cover a wide range of musical genres, including Tejano, Chicano and Mexican American. Full access to the archive is only available to UCLA patrons; the rest of us can listen to 50 seconds of each song, look at the record labels, and read background information on the song.

This project received generous help from the Arhoolie Foundation, and Los Tigres del Norte.

El Chicano Studies Center en UCLA ha digitizado mas de 41.00 canciones a una base de datos titulada Música de la Frontera. Algunas de las canciones incluidas datan de 1900, y cubren un gran rango de estilos de música, incluyendo Tejano, Chicano, y música Mexicoamericana. Acceso completo a esta colección se reserva para aquellos afiliados con UCLA; el resto de nosotros podemos escuchar 50 segundos de cada canción, además de ver las caratulas de los discos, y leer información sobre cada canción.

Sometimes is seems like all my friends are trying to learn or improve their Spanish, which I love, and encourage as much as I can. So here’s a tool that might help you all!

El Castellano.org is a site that tries to gather web resources that will aid in learning Spanish, both the European and Latin American versions of it. The site offers various dictionaries, including one specialized in Argentine Spanish and another for botany. There are also a couple sections that explain certain parts of the language where new learners might easily be confused; for example the difference between “dentro” and “adentro”. It has a number of stories related to the language’s history, including information on Nebrija, author of the first text of Spanish language grammar (1492) and the first Spanish language dictionary (1495).

You’ll also find links to other websites this group recommends, and links to Spanish language radio stations around the world, so you can start educating your ears. There’s a page titled Spanishpoint where you’ll find links to (mostly) stories about the language around the world. Some of the current entries include a discussion about the use of a “neutral” version of the language that can be used across all of the Spanish speaking world, and an article on the Spanish spoken by Jews in Spain back in the 15th century. You’ll also find a lot of other random stories there.

Interestingly, the site was established by a group of Spanish speaking people from around the world, having members in Argentina, Spain, Uruguay, and Brazil.

And a few stats to encourage you to learn more Spanish;

• Spanish is the official language of 21 countries around the globe.
• It’s an oficial language to the UN, the EU, the OAS, and NAFTA.
• Spanish is the 4th language in the world in terms of number of speakers, with 330 million of us.

ColombiaYa.com is a search engine for Colombians, by Colombians. The site will provide access to all things Colombian, starting with a crash course of the country’s government and history. You will also find news, culture, sports, government, entertainment, tourism, and so much more. The site also provides contact information for all the Colombian embassies around the world; useful information and documentation for Colombian living abroad; and direct links to all of the Colombian government’s websites, including the presidency, Colciencias, ICETEX, and ministry for education, among many others. The site allows for open discussion about Colombia, allowing users to share articles on any Colombian topic, and providing a space for chat. You’ll also find links to all the mayor radio stations. There is a calendar highlighting all the mayor holidays, including the many, many saints we honor. If you want to advertise an event that will interest the Colombian community, there is a page dedicated to this, although it is currently empty.

March is Women’s History Month in the USA and a number of universities, libraries, and other educational institutions are preparing events to celebrate. This month long celebration started with events for International Women’s Day, which falls every year on March 8th.

Many of the celebrations around this date wish to write women back into history and to make sure we remain part of the narrative for the future. The National Women’s History Project is an organization that works year around towards this end. This year their theme is “Women Taking the Lead to Save our Planet“, an event which will honor women engaged in various effort to keep this planet green.

The USA Library of Congress (LOC) is celebrating by creating a website which highlights many of the treasures they hold related to women’s history. The site currently focuses on women’s contribution to the arts, offering us highlights to musicians, painters, photographer and writers; each with direct links to specific collections with in the library. There is also a section with resources to help teachers and students highlight women in the classroom.

Two more great resources for women’s history from the LOC include the America Women, and  Women at War. The Schlesinger Library is also another excellent collection on women in American history.

En EEUU Marzo es el Mes de la Mujer y universidades, bibliotecas y otras instituciones de educación están haciendo preparativos para celebrar. Este mes de celebración tiene origen con el Día Internacional de la Mujer, el cual se celebra cada 8 de Marzo.

Muchas de las celebraciones en esta fecha quieren recordar a las mujeres a lo largo de la historia, y asegurarse de que continuemos siendo parte de esta narrativa en el futuro. El proyecto Nacional de Historia de la Mujer (National Women’s History Project) es una organización que trabaja a lo largo del año hacia este fin. Este año están organizado eventos bajo el titulo de “Mujeres Tomando la Iniciativa para Salvar el Planeta,” el cual hará honor a mujeres comprometidas en la labor de mantener este planeta verde.

La Biblioteca del Congreso en EEUU esta celebrando con la creación de varios sitios web dedicados a resaltar algunos de los tesoros que tiene relacionados a la historia de las mujeres. Actualmente el sitio hace énfasis en las contribuciones que han hecho las mujeres en el campo del arte, ofreciéndonos muestras de mujeres en el campo de la música, pintura, fotografía, y escritura; cada entrada con enlaces directos a las colecciones correspondientes en la biblioteca. También hay una sección con recursos para maestros y estudiantes que deseen resaltar a las mujeres en el salón.

Dos recursos más de interés en la Biblioteca del Congreso con la colección Mujeres Americana (American Women), y Mujeres en la Guerra (Women at War). La biblioteca Schlesinger también es un recurso excelente en este campo.
