While I was growing up in Colombia libraries were very scarce, the only library one ever heard mentioned was the Biblioteca Luis Ángel Arango (BLAA), which I finally got to visit.

Mientras vivía en Colombia las biblioteca publicas siempre fueron muy escasas, y la única que uno oía nombre alguna vez era la Biblioteca Luis Ángel Arango (BLAA); solo hasta ahora logro visitarla.

While the Biblioteca Luis Ángel Arango is owned by the Banco de la República de Colombia, it is very much a public library, and open to everyone. The library’s collection is available to anyone who walks in the front door. All visitors can consult books while in the library and access a number of online databases that library subscribed to, but to check a book out, or to use the databases remotely, patrons must become members of the library. And while the BLAA is based in Bogota, the Banco de la República has smaller libraries and research centers across the country, which regularly exchange material through ILL.

Aunque la Biblioteca Luis Ángel Arango es propiedad del Banco de la República de Colombia, esta es totalmente una biblioteca pública, y está abierta a todos. La colección de la biblioteca está disponible para cualquier persona que entre por la puerta. Todos los visitantes pueden consultar libros y acceder a un número de bases de datos en línea a las que la biblioteca está suscrita, pero si quiere llevarse un libro a la casa, o utilizar las bases de datos de forma remota, deberán hacerse miembros de la biblioteca. Y mientras la BLAA tiene su sede principal en Bogotá, el Banco de la República tiene bibliotecas más pequeñas y centros de investigación por todo el país, y estas regularmente hacen intercambio a través de préstamos interbibliotecario.

The BLAA’s collection includes about 2 million items; most of the library’s collection is housed in Bogota, although they to have a remote storage facility in Ipiales where they keep material that doesn’t circulate very often. And while the library is technically not a legal deposit for the country, they have huge holdings of all the major newspapers, and many of the books published in the country. The library also has 11 reading rooms, each one specialized. There are reading rooms for maps, audio-visual material, periodicals, language learning, a children’s section, the Sciences, and Arts and Humanities. Each room has a reference librarian as well as a number of library assistants to help patrons.

La colección de la BLAA incluye cerca de 2 millones de artículos; la mayoría de la colección se encuentra en Bogotá, pero también tienen una instalación de almacenamiento remoto en Ipiales, donde se guarda el material que no circula con mucha frecuencia. Y mientras que la biblioteca no es técnicamente un depósito legal para el país, esta tiene enormes cantidades de todos los periódicos más importantes en Colombia, y muchos de los libros publicados en el país. La biblioteca también cuenta con 11 salas de lectura, cada uno especializada. Hay salas de lectura de mapas, material audiovisual, publicaciones periódicas, para aprendizaje de idiomas, una sección para niños, las Ciencias, y las Artes y las Humanidades. Cada salón de lectura tiene un bibliotecario de referencia, así como un número de auxiliares de biblioteca para ayudar a los usuarios.

One of the reading rooms that caught my attention was the music room. This room not only holds music related material, but has 3 rooms with pianos patrons can use for free, and 2 other rooms where users can borrow and practice with brass instruments. The music room also has 2 small auditoriums which can be check out by users to screen movies, or hold events, and where the library regularly schedules events that are open to the public. The library also includes a gorgeous auditorium said to have the best acoustics in all of South America.

Una de las salas de lectura que más me llamó la atención fue la sala de música. Esta sala no sólo tiene material relacionado con la música, pero tiene 3 habitaciones con pianos que se pueden utilizar de forma gratuita, y otras 2 habitaciones donde se pueden tomar prestado y practicar con instrumentos de viento. La sala de música también cuenta con 2 auditorios pequeños que se pueden usar para ver películas, u organizar otros eventos, y donde la biblioteca regularmente programas eventos que están abiertos al público. La biblioteca también incluye un auditorio magnífico, del cual dicen que tiene la mejor acústica en toda América del Sur.

Up until a few years ago when more public libraries open up in Bogota, the BLAA would see an average of 9 thousand visitors a day, 12 thousand on weekend days! I was there on a Friday afternoon, and I saw plenty of people there. Traffic in the BLAA is probably this high because many local universities don’t have large collections, and many send their students to the BLAA to do research. Because of this the BLAA collection includes a lot of university texts, but they also make a conscious effort to cater to users with little or no formal education.

Hasta hace unos años, cuando aún no habían otras bibliotecas públicas en Bogotá, la BLAA vería un promedio de 9 mil visitantes al día, ¡12 mil en los días de fin de semana! Yo estuve allí un viernes por la tarde, y vi un montón de gente allí. El tráfico en la BLAA es probablemente tan alto debido a que muchas universidades locales no tienen grandes colecciones, y muchos envían a sus estudiantes a la BLAA para hacer investigación. Debido a esto la colección de la BLAA incluye una gran cantidad de textos universitarios, pero también hacen un esfuerzo para atender a los usuarios con poca o ninguna educación formal.

Over the years the library has also begun creating a number of online collections, some of which highlight other holdings of the bank, including the Museo Botero, and La Casa de la Moneda. There is also an online library for childrenwhich offer full access to a number of Colombian children’s books. They also have an online version of a number of interesting exhibits. The library (through the bank) also has a Flickr account which includes some really fascinating images.

Con los años la biblioteca también ha comenzado a crear una serie de colecciones en línea, algunos de los que ponen en relieve otras explotaciones del banco, incluyendo el Museo Botero y La Casa de la Moneda. También hay una biblioteca en línea para niños que ofrecen acceso completo a una serie de libros colombianos para niños. También tienen una versión en línea de una serie de interesantes exposiciones. La biblioteca (a través del banco) también tiene una cuenta de Flickr, que incluye algunas imágenes realmente fascinantes.

Right now the BLAA has two temprary exhibits. The first one is about Colombia’s independence and includes pieces about Simon Bolivar, and Policarpa Salavarrieta. The other exhibit is about the history of cartoons in Colombia since independence. Both are very much worth seeing. The whole library is very much worth seeing; you can easily spend the entire day there and still have plenty to do.

Ahora mismo la BLAA tiene dos exposiciones temporales. La primera es sobre la independencia de Colombia, e incluye obras sobre Simón Bolívar y Policarpa Salavarrieta. La otra exposición es sobre la historia de las caricaturas en Colombia desde la independencia. Realmente vale la pena ver ambas. Enserio, vale la pena ver toda la biblioteca, fácilmente puede pasar el día entero allí y todavía tendría mucho que hacer.

Travesía is a website put together by Spain’s Ministry of Culture’s General Subcommittee on the Coordination of Libraries. Basically the sites aims at promoting collaboration among Spanish librarians, and offers them a space to work together.

Information on the site is divided into three main categories; 1) Documentation that will aid collaboration among Spanish Librarians; 2) Publications by the Spain’s Ministry of Culture’s General Subcommittee on the Coordination of Libraries; and 3) Offers access to other relevant publications.

The site functions in all the official languages used in Spanish, plus English.

Travesía es un sitio web elaborado por la Subdirección General de Coordinación Bibliotecaria del Ministerio de Cultura de España. Básicamente el sitios tiene como objetivo promover la colaboración entre bibliotecarios en españa y les ofrece un espacio para trabajar juntos.

Información en el sitio se divide en tres categorías principales: 1) Documentación que ayudará a la colaboración entre los bibliotecarios españoles, 2) Publicaciones de la Subdirección General de Coordinación Bibliotecaria del Ministerio de Cultura de España, y 3) Ofrece acceso a otras publicaciones pertinentes.

El sitio funciona en todos los idiomas oficiales que se usan en españa, y en inglés.

The British Library is always up to something interesting; I just discovered their Database of Bookbindings. This is an entire online collection dedicated to the bindings of books held by the British Library, some of which date back to 1500! The collection also includes some items held by the National Library of Netherlands.

The collection includes a lot of images that will help you better understand who books have been put together over the years, and will likely be a great resource for anyone learning this beautiful craft.

La Biblioteca Británica está creando proyectos interesantes; acabo de descubrir su base de datos de encuadernaciones. Se trata de una colección en línea dedicada a la encuadernación de libros de la Biblioteca Británica, algunos de los cuales se remontan a 1500! La colección también incluye algunos elementos de la Biblioteca Nacional de Países Bajos.

La colección incluye una gran cantidad de imágenes que le ayudarán a comprender mejor como se han encuadernado los libros a travez de los años, y probablemente será un gran recurso para cualquier persona que aprenden este hermoso arte.

My friend Alberto Martinez, who works at El Colegio de México, is always collaborating on great projects, the most recent one has resulted in free access to all the journals that the university edits!

The journals, which cover a wide range of topics, many of them relating to Mexican history can be accessed here. You can browse the collection by journal title, or through the advance search feature at the top left corner of the page.

This beautiful database set up by the Van Gogh Museum, gathers all of Vicent van Gogh’s letters, including facsimiles of the originals, transcriptions, translations, and the art work connected to each. The site allows you to browse by period, correspondent, and by place. You can also conduct basic and advance searches. The collection includes 902 letters, and 2,000 paintings (his own, and those of other artists) referenced in the letters. The site functions in English, French and Dutch.

The site will also give you some background information on van Gogh, his work, the time period, and the basics in his life. All this with the intention of drawing a more complex picture of the artist, something beyond the basic story that the man was plain old crazy.

Take a look, van Gogh was a fascinating man, and his letters reflect all his beauty.

Esta hermosas base de datos, creada por el Museo Van Gogh reúne todas las cartas de Vicent Van Gogh incluyendo las facsímiles de las cartas, sus transcripciones, traducciones, y la obra de arte conectado a cada una. El sitio le permite navegar por período, corresponsal, y por el lugar. También puede realizar búsquedas básicas y avanzadas. La colección incluye 902 cartas, y 2.000 pinturas (la suya, y las de otros artistas) a las que se hace referencia en las cartas. El sitio funciona en Inglés, francés y neerlandés.

Yesterday the Guardian posted an article about a new database the BBC put together called Wildlife Finder. The site gathers hundreds of video footage, from over 30 BBC programs,of wild animals the world over. Videos are organized by type of animal, habitat, adaptation features, or ecozone.

Each entry also includes the animal’s scientific classification, adaptation information which comes from the Animal Diversity Web, habitat, and a couple paragraphs providing some basic information, the content of which comes from Wikipedia. You’ll also find information on the animal’s conservation status, and outside links for further information. There is also a short clip of the sounds each animal makes. Sir David Attenborough is featured in a number of the videos.

The site seems like a great resource, but I’ve been trying to access it for two days now, but instead of videos all I get is a notice saying “This content doesn’t seem to be working. Try again later.” I’ll keep trying, but hopefully the folks at the BBC will fix this soon.

10/01/09 – I heard that the videos are only available to viewers in the UK. Even without the video portion this is still a great site.

Ayer The Guardian publicó un artículo sobre una nueva base de datos de la BBC llamado Wildlife Finder. El sitio reúne cientos de vídeo de más de 30 programas de la BBC, de animales salvajes en todo el mundo. Los vídeos están organizados por tipo de animal, hábitat, características de adaptación, o ecozona.

Cada entrada incluye también la clasificación científica de los animales, la información que proviene Animal Diversity Web, su hábitat y un par de párrafos proporcionar cierta información básica, cuyo contenido proviene de Wikipedia. Usted también encontrará información sobre el estado de conservación de los animales, y enlaces externos para más información. También hay un  clip breve de los sonidos de cada animal. Sir David Attenborough aparece en varios de los videos.

El sitio parece un gran recurso pero he estado tratando de acceder desde hace dos días y en vez de vídeos lo único que consigo es un aviso que dice “Este contenido no parece estar funcionando. Inténtelo de nuevo más tarde.” Voy a seguir intentando, pero espero que la gente de la BBC arregle esto pronto.

10/01/09 – Escuche decir que los videos sólo están disponibles para los usuarios en el Reino Unido. Incluso sin la parte de vídeo esto sigue siendo un gran sitio.

The Atlas database at the Louvre provides access to all the items exhibited at the museum, some 30,000 items. This database was first up and running in French, and currently functions in English thanks to financial help the American Friends of the Louvre. Each item can be magnified, and comes with a brief description.

You can search the site by running simple searched on a specific artist, work, or style. You can also browse by museum room, department, or recent acquisitions. Do take note that there is a much larger selection to browse through if you are using the French interface.

La base de datos Atlas en el Louvre ofrece acceso a todos los objetos expuestos en el museo, unos 30.000 artículos. Esta base de datos empezo funcionando en francés, y ahora también funciona en inglés, gracias a la ayuda financiera de los Amigos Americanos del Louvre. Cada elemento puede ser ampliada, y viene con una breve descripción.

Usted puede buscar en el sitio mediante la ejecución de simples búsquedas en un determinado artista, pedazo de arte, o estilo. También puede navegar por sala del museo, el departamento, o las adquisiciones recientes. Tome nota de que la selección a mirar es mucho mas grande si esta usando el interfaz en francés.

Steven McCurry

National Geographic has been around for well over a century and have managed to gather a very impressive photography collection over the years. The magazine specializes on photojournalism, pairing powerful images to written articles, and over time had left us with images that have been seen the world over; after all who hasn’t seen Steven McCurry‘s photograph of the Afghan Girl?

National Geographic has made many of these images available on their website, and currently the Steven Kasher Gallery in Chelsea is hosting an exhibit of some of this work. The gallery exhibit opened on Thursday, September 17, and will be showing 150 photographs, many of which were never published in the magazine. The exhibit closes on October 17, 2009.

National Geographic ha existido por más de un siglo, tiempo durante el cual han conseguido reunir una colección de fotografía muy impresionante. La revista se especializa en fotoperiodismo, vinculando poderosas imágenes a los artículos escritos, y atravez de los años nos han dejado con imágenes que han dado la vuelta al mundo- después de todo ¿quien no ha visto la fotografía de la niña Afgana tomada por Steve McCurry?

National Geographic ha hecho disponibles muchas de estas imágenes en su página web, y actualmente la galería Steven Kasher en Chelsea está organizando una exposición de algunos de estos trabajos. La exhibición de la galería fue inaugurada el jueves, 17 de septiembre, y reune 150 fotografías, muchas de las cuales nunca fueron publicados en la revista. La exposición cierra el 17 de octubre de 2009.

The Biblioteca Digital de la Medicina Tradicional Mexicana (Digital Library of Traditional Mexican Medicine) is a project created by UNAM which gathers information on this practice.

Here you will find information on the plants used for healing, including scientific and popular names, illnesses it is associated with, and a brief bibliography for further information. There is also a map where you can browse information by indigenous group. Under each indigenous group you will find a brief description of the culture, current situation, and you can learn about which illnesses they commonly suffer, and how they cure them.  You will also find a second map divided by geographic region, and under each you’ll find general information of the region, including main indigenous groups, agricultural practices, and main illnesses seen in the region. This section is both in Spanish and the main local indigenous language. There is also a specialized dictionary.

The site is also indexed alphabetically, by topic, and my indigenous group.

La Biblioteca Digital de la Medicina Tradicional Mexicana es un proyecto de la UNAM que recoge información sobre esta práctica.

Aquí encontrará información sobre las plantas utilizadas para la curación, incluyendo sus nombres científicos y populares, las enfermedades que se asocia con estas, y una breve bibliografía para más información. También hay un mapa donde se puede navegar por grupo indígena. Dentro de cada grupo indígena encontrará una breve descripción de la cultura, su situación actual, y podrá enterarse de las enfermedades que a menudo sufren y cómo las curan. También encontrará otro mapa dividido por regiones geográficas y en cada región encontrará información general de la región, además de los principales grupos indígenas, así como las prácticas agrícolas, y principales enfermedades vistas ahí. Esta sección está en español como en el dialecto indígena local. También hay in diccionario especializado.

El sitio también está indexado alfabéticamente, por tema, y por grupo indígena.

DASH (Digital Access to Scholarship at Harvard) has just been released in Beta. The repository is the product of a university initiative to fully participate in the Open Access movement by making available faculty publications to the world.

This project establishes that publications by Harvard faculty from the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and the Law School are automatically shared with the world, and will share copyright with the university library, allowing it to republish them as needed.

The database can be browsed by school, or can be keyword searched.

DASH (Digital Access to Scholarship at Harvard) acaba de ser lanzado en versión beta. El repositorio es el producto de una iniciativa de la universidad para que participen plenamente en el movimiento de acceso abierto, haciendo disponible las publicaciones de los profesores al mundo.

Este proyecto establece que las publicaciones por profesores de Harvard de la Facultad de Artes y Ciencias, y la Facultad de Derecho se comparten automáticamente con el mundo, y compartirán los derechos de autor con la biblioteca universitaria, lo que le permite a esta vuelva a publicarlos cuando sea necesario.

La base de datos se puede navegar por escuela, o por palabra clave.
