Mexico has recently release the Biblioteca Digital Mexicana, a great digital collection giving us access to documents dating back to Mexico’s precolonial history, independence and revolutionary period. The site offers excellent digital scans of codices, including some information on the physical item, and some historical context.

México acaba de anunciar la Biblioteca Digital Mexicana, una gran colección digital que nos da acceso a documentos que datan de la historia pre-colonial de México, su independencia y el período revolucionario. El sitio ofrece un excelente imágenes digital de los códices incluyendo información sobre el articulo físico y un poco de contexto histórico.

This project was created through the work of four Mexican cultural institutions; Archivo General de la Nación, La Biblioteca Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH),  el Centro de Estudios de Historia de México CEHM- Carso, y el Consejo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes. These institutions have previously shared some of their holdings through the World Digital Library.

Este proyecto fue creado a través del trabajo de cuatro instituciones culturales de México; Archivo General de la Nación, la Biblioteca Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH), El Centro de Estudios de Historia de México CEHM-Carso, y El Consejo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes. Estas instituciones han compartido previamente algunos de sus documentos a través de la Biblioteca Digital Mundial.

This project takes off with a handful of items, but I assume more will be added over time.

The Biblioteca Jurídica Virtual is a project created by UNAM which aims to make legal material available to everyone. This virtual library of legal material began by uploading digital files of a number of items from the UNAM’s library collection, and other the years has grown to include the participation of many other legal collections, both in Mexico, as well as abroad. In the long run this project hopes to offer many of the services you could find at a regular library, including reference assistant from a librarian, and ILL. Currently the collection is growing at the rate of one book a day.

La Biblioteca Jurídica Virtual es un proyecto creado por la UNAM que tiene como objetivo poner al alcance de todos una cantidad de material legal. Esta biblioteca virtual se inició al empezar a subir archivos digitales de la colección de la biblioteca de la UNAM, y a través de los años ha crecido para incluir la participación de muchas otras colecciones legales, tanto en México como en el extranjero. A largo plazo este proyecto pretende ofrecer muchos de los servicios que usted podría encontrar en una biblioteca regular, incluyendo asistencia de referencia de un bibliotecario, y el préstamo interbibliotecario. Actualmente la colección está creciendo al agregar un libro por día.

Here are parts one, two, and three of a news report highlighting the impressive change the city of Medellín, Colombia has had in the last decade or so, and how Juárez, Mexico is trying to model itself after it.

During the 90s Medellín has known the world over for its violence, but today it’s an entirely different place, and much of this new-found peace and prosperity can be linked to the massive investment the city made in public libraries, and other social programs. Medellín created a system of public libraries and strategically located them in some of the poorest, and most violent neighborhoods. One of these new libraries, the Parque Biblioteca León de Greiff, lives in a building which used to he a jail. What beautiful symbolism, from prison to place of learning. In each neighborhood these libraries have become places to learn, build community, and socialize.

Durante los años 90 Medellín era famosa alrededor del mundo mundo por su violencia, pero hoy es un lugar totalmente diferente y gran parte de esta nueva paz y prosperidad son resultados directos de la gran inversión que la ciudad hizo en bibliotecas públicas y otros programas sociales. Medellín creó un sistema de bibliotecas públicas ubicadas estratégicamente en algunos de los barrios más pobres y violentos. Una de estas nuevas bibliotecas es el Parque Biblioteca León de Greiff, ubicada en un edificio que antes que antes era cárcel. Que hermoso simbolismo, de cárcel a lugar de conocimiento. En cada barrio de estas bibliotecas se han convertido en lugares para aprender, construir comunidad, y socializar.

Sitios de Memoria en América Latina gathers information about human rights across Latin America, which has been produced by the 27 organizations from Latin American countries that make part of the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience. The Latin American countries participating in this are mainly from the Southern Cone and Central America, with a noticeable absence from the Andean countries.

Some of the information you can find on the site include publications from previous conferences, a map of clandestine detention centers in Argentina, a calendar of events including photographic exhibits documenting human rights in Latin America, and an online forum that you can join for free after filling in an online form.

There is also a digital library which includes photographs, videos, audio, manuscripts and iconography that create memory about human rights in Latin America.

The site functions in Spanish and English.

Sitios de Memoria en América Latina reúne información producido por las 27 organizaciones de países latinoamericanos que hacen parte de la Coalición Internacional de Sitios de Conciencia, sobre de los derechos humanos en toda América Latina. Los países latinoamericanos que participan son principalmente del Cono Sur y América Central, con una notable ausencia de los países andinos.

Parte de la información que puede encontrar en el sitio incluyen publicaciones de conferencias anteriores, un mapa de centros de detención clandestinos en Argentina, un calendario de eventos, incluyendo exposiciones fotográficas que documentan los derechos humanos en América Latina, y un foro en línea al que puede unirse de forma gratuita después de llenar un formulario en línea.

A few months ago the BBC launched a new archive of world music. During the ten years that Radio 3 has been on the air the program has been visiting people all around the world and making professional quality recording of dying folk music. The idea of this new archive is to make these recording available to a much larger public.

As I write this I’m listening to the first of two programs about Tangos. I like that the recording begins with some background information about Tangos, including some Argentina’s history, other types of music that have influence tangos, and of course there are samples of some of the most memorable songs.

Hace unos meses la BBC puso en marcha un nuevo archivo de música del mundo. Durante los diez años que Radio 3 ha estado al aire el programa ha estado visitando a gente de todo el mundo y produciendo grabaciones de calidad profesional música popular en vía de extinción. La idea de este nuevo archivo es poner estas grabaciones a disposición de un público mucho más grande.

Mientras escribo esto estoy escuchando el primero de dos programas sobre tangos. Mun2.0 “Vibración Positiva y Conocimiento” is a brand new radio program dedicated to the world of information and its management. The program is created and hosted by a group of library science students and professionals from La Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá. The first program aired last Monday, beginning with a broad background discussion on the history of information management, and included two interviews with information professionals.

The second program will air Monday, August 9th, and I will be one of the two people interviewed. We talked about how I got into the library world, this blog, and what I believe new information professionals needs in order to be successful in the field.

The program airs Monday morning from 7:30 – 8:00 local time (Bogotá). Find out what your local time is with this handy tool, The World Time Zone. You can listen to the program online through the Javeriana Estereo website, and things are in the works to soon offer the program online.

Mun2.0 “Vibración Positiva y Conocimiento” es un programa radial nuevo dedicado al mundo de la información y su gestión. El programa es creado y organizado por un grupo de estudiantes y profesionales de ciencia de la información, bibliotecología de la Pontificia Universidad Javeriana en Bogotá. El primer programa salió al aire el lunes pasado, comenzando con una discusión de fondo amplio sobre la historia del manejo de la información, e incluyó dos entrevistas con profesionales en el campo.

El segundo programa saldrá al aire el lunes, 09 de agosto, y yo soy una de dos personas entrevistadas. Hablamos de cómo empece en el mundo de la bibliotecologia, este blog, y mi opinión sobre lo que creo que todo nuevo profesional necesita para tener éxito en el campo.

On that same SALALM panel titled “Documenting in Times of Adversity, Survival and Hope” my friend Lynn Shirey presented on a newly acquired collection of slides by photographer Andrés Romero Spethman, documenting Chilean Protest Murals during the dictatorship of Gen. Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990). The collection was recently purchased by Harvard and is currently available online for everyone to use.

In many cases these slides are the only record left of many of these murals, since they were quickly painted over by the regime. The murals document people’s anger, frustration and cries for help during the dictatorship.

While going through the collection you are likely to find many a familiar face, including Pablo Neruda, Gabriela Mistral, Víctor Jara, president Salvador Allende, and many other famous Chileans.

En ese mismo panel de SALALM titulado “La documentación en tiempos de adversidad, supervivencia y esperanza” mi amiga Lynn Shirey presentó sobre una colección de diapositivas por el fotógrafo Andrés Romero Spethman, recién adquiridas documentando los Murales de Protesta Chilenos durante la dictadura del general Augusto Pinochet (1973 – 1990). La colección fue adquirida recientemente por Harvard y actualmente está disponible en línea para uso de todos.

En muchos casos estas diapositivas son el único registro que queda de estos murales ya que fueron borrados con rapidez por el régimen. Los murales documentan la indignación del pueblo, su frustración y sus gritos de socorro durante la dictadura.

Last weekend I was attending the annual SALALM conference and heard about a lot of great projects relating to libraries and Latin American. The Cuban Rafter Phenomenon: A Unique Sea Exodus project is one of them. I heard about this project on a panel titled “Documenting in Times of Adversity, Survival and Hope.” María Rita Corticelli from the University of Exeter was the official presenter, but Holly Ackerman from Duke University was there as well, since this project was derived from her PhD program with the help of a few other scholars in the area.

The site focuses on the Cubans who left the island during the raft crisis of 1994, gathering interviews, photographs, videos. The site is divided into three main areas; Part I – What is the Rafter Crisis? ; Part II – Interdicted: The Rafters Go to Guantánamo ; Part III – Crisis in the Wider Caribbean – The Case of the Cayman Islands. Each section is further subdivided.

While going through the collection I notice that the topic is covered from a variety of viewpoints, including the rafters themselves, US Coast guard officials, Cuban children, and local politicians. And all aspects of the phenomenon are documented as well. You’ll find photographs of the rafts, several timelines of key events, an interactive map, and scanned documents.

Be aware that the site has some very obnoxious background noise.

El fin de semana pasado asistía a la conferencia anual de SALALM y me entere de una cantidad de proyectos super interesantes relacionados con bibliotecas y América Latina. The Cuban Rafter Phenomenon: A Unique Sea Exodus (El fenómeno del balsero cubano: una experiencia única de éxodo) es uno de ellos. Me enteré de este proyecto en un panel titulado “La documentación en tiempos de adversidad, supervivencia y esperanza.” María Rita Corticelli de la Universidad de Exeter fue el presentador oficial, pero Holly Ackerman de la Universidad Duke estaba allí también, ya que este proyecto se deriva de su programa de doctorado con la ayuda de algunos otros expertos en el campo.

El sitio se centra en los cubanos que abandonaron la isla durante la crisis balsa de 1994, y recopila entrevistas, fotografías, y videos. El sitio se divide en tres áreas principales: Parte I – ¿Cuál es la Crisis de los Balseros? ; Parte II – Prohibido: Los balseros van a Guantánamo; Parte III – Crisis en el Caribe – El Caso de las Islas Caimán. Al analizar la colección me doy cuenta de que el tema se trata de una variedad de puntos de vista, incluyendo los balseros, funcionarios de la Guardia Costera de EEUU, niños cubanos y varios políticos. Todos los aspectos del fenómeno se documentan también. Usted encontrará fotografías de las balsas, líneas de tiempo de varios de los eventos clave, un mapa interactivo y documentos escaneados.

Tenga en cuenta que el sitio incluye un ruido de fondo muy desagradable.

Con ganas de celebrar el bicentenario de Colombia aquí recojo información sobre algunos eventos y colecciones que se han organizado en Colombia y virtualmente. ¡A celebrar se dijo!

El proyecto Libro al Viento se ha asociado con la Biblioteca Luis Ángel Arango (BLAA) para traer varias biografías sobre los grandes de Colombia al público en general. A diferencia de otras publicaciones, esta colección de bicentenario también se ofrece en formato digital. Los tres títulos de la colección son,“¡Viva la Pola!”, “¡Soy Caldas!” y “La antorcha brillante” (biografía de Antonio Nariño).

La BLAA también está organizando otros eventos que se llevan a cabo en la biblioteca. Si visita la BLAA encontrara varias exposiciones sobre el bicentenario, incluyendo “Palabras que nos cambiaron: lenguaje y poder en la independencia”, “La caricatura en Colombia a partir de la independencia” (esta incluye recorrido virtual), y “Habeas Corpus: que tengas [un] cuerpo [para exponer].” La biblioteca también organiza el XV Congreso Colombia de Historia que se llevara a cado del 26 al 30 de julio de 2010. Además tiene otra página que recoge artículos sobre la independencia de Colombia y otros países suramericanos. Y como si todo esto no fuera suficiente también tiene un blog donde están recogiendo noticias sobre más eventos del bicentenario.

El ministerio de cultura también tiene una cantidad de eventos programados, al igual que una cantidad de colecciones en línea que están disponibles para todos. Vea aquí 200 años de historia Colombiana, escuche la música que hemos gozado por dos siglos. Vea los Diálogos de la Independencia; aquí encontrara una seria de videos por tema de una cantidad de historiadores tratando varios temas de la historia Colombiana. 1810: Independencias al Aire recoge 22 capítulos de una serie radial recrea algunos de hechos históricos y de cotidianidad Colombiana. La pagina titulada Centros Municipales de Memorias tiene un mapa interactivo que le dará mas información sobre las celebraciones que se llevan a cabo en cada localidad. La Línea de Tiempo le mostrara imágenes y otra información de los últimos doscientos años, década por década. La Agenda de Celebraciones le dará más información sobre 32 eventos que se llevan a cado a lo largo y ancho de la nación.

El sistema de BiblioRed está organizando un ciclo de conferencia que trata nuestra historia, y algunas que tratan la historia de las comunidades indígenas. Todas con entrada libre. El Museo Nacional monto una cantidad de colecciones en línea que tratan el tema del bicentenario. Aquí encontrara Carteles, cartillas, y radio. Eager to celebrate the Colombia’s bicentenary I’ve gather some information about events and collections that have been organized in Colombia and virtually. Let the celebrations begin!

The Project Libro al Viento has partnered with the Luis Ángel Arango Library (BLAA) to bring several biographies of the great men and women of Colombia to the general public. Unlike other publications, this bicentennial collection will also be offered in digital format. The three titles in the collection are, “¡Viva la Pola!”, “¡Soy Caldas!” y “La antorcha brillante” (biografía de Antonio Nariño). The BLAA is also organizing other events that are being held in the library. If you visit the BLAA you’ll find several exhibitions on the bicentennial, including “Palabras que nos cambiaron: lenguaje y poder en la independencia”, “La caricatura en Colombia a partir de la independencia” (this includes a virtual tour), and “Habeas Corpus: que tengas [un] cuerpo [para exponer].” The library also organizes the XV Congress on Colombian History that market will take 26 to July 30, 2010. It also has another site that features articles on the independence of Colombia and other South American countries. As if all this were not enough it also has a blog where you can get more news about other events of the bicentennial.

The Ministry of Culture also has a number of scheduled events, as well as a number of online collections that are available to everyone. See Diálogos de la Independencia, here you will find a series of videos by subject of a number of historians discussing various topics in Colombian history. 1810: Independencias al Aire contains 22 chapters of a radio series which recreates some of the historical facts and daily realities which make up our history. The Línea de Tiempo will show images and information of the last two hundred years, decade by decade. The BiblioRed system is organizing a series of conference on our history, some dealing with the history of indigenous communities. Admission to all these conferences is free. The National Museum mounted a number of online collections that address the bicentennial. Here you will find posters, brochures, and radio audio.
