Today I spent the day at the Parque Biblioteca España – Santo Domingo Savio. I had read about this library before in the NYT, and was fascinated to see that Colombia was developing a great public library systems.

The library has been running for three years now, and was initially build with a grant by the king and queen of Spain (hence the name of the library). A while later the prince of Spain made another donation, this time it was 1500 books for the library. These donations, added to the award the library won from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation have ensured that the library’s collection is very complete, and well stocked in terms of technology.

While visiting the library I learned that the library has two main computer rooms, one for adults and one for children, each one staffed with a library assistant that can help users with their work. The collection is also divided between adult and children’s sections. The children’s section is full of the usual library material, but also includes a games room where there is always a staff member to supervise the children. There are also several community rooms, and a large auditorium residents can sign up to use.

While there I was surprised to see just how many people where using the library, while there was a total absence of graffiti or any other kind of vandalism. The entire building is spotless, a true sign that the community has completely embraced their new library and have incorporated it into the community.

In the three years that the library has opened apparently crime has gone down in the neighborhood, and there is a marked rise in the number of locally owned business in the area. Santo Domingo Savio used to be known as a hot bed for crime and gang activity, but now it’s famous for its library!

And if all of this isn’t enough to make you want to visit the library, consider that to get there, you have to ride the MetroCable! This is part of Medellin’s metro system and the only example in the world where a gondola lift system has been implemented for public transportation. The views from the MetroCable are absolutely beautiful, and it’s probably one of the best places to see all of the city from above.

And hey, you might even run into a local child who will offer to tell you the history of the library and its impact on the neighborhood for a small donation. The child who approach us had a very complete and well memorized speech about the library. And when I tried to ask a question in the middle of his talk, he vehemently let me know that he wasn’t taking questions until the end! I did eventually find out that he does use the library on a regular basis to complete homework assignments.

Hoy me pasé el día en el Parque Biblioteca España – Santo Domingo Savio. Ya había leído acerca de esta biblioteca en el NYT, y estaba fascinada al ver que Colombia estaba desarrollando sistemas de bibliotecas públicas increíble.

La biblioteca ha estado funcionando durante tres años, e inicialmente se construye con una donación por el rey y la reina de España (de ahí el nombre de la biblioteca). Un rato después el príncipe de España hizo otra donación, esta vez fue de 1500 libros para la biblioteca. Estas donaciones, sumadas a la adjudicación que la biblioteca se gano de la Fundación Bill y Melinda Gates han asegurado que la colección de la biblioteca sea muy completa y bien provista en términos de tecnología.

Durante mi visita a la biblioteca me enteré de que la biblioteca tiene dos salas de principales de computadores, una para adultos y otra para niños, cada una dotada con un auxiliar de biblioteca que pueden ayudar a los usuarios con su trabajo. La colección está dividida entre las secciones de adultos y niños. La sección de niños está llena del material usual, pero también incluye una sala de juegos donde siempre hay un miembro del personal para supervisar a los niños. También hay varias salas comunitarias, y un gran auditorio que los usuarios pueden usar para organizar eventos.

También me sorprendió ver cuántas personas estaban en la biblioteca, cuando a la misma vez había una ausencia total de grafiti o cualquier otro tipo de vandalismo. Todo el edificio está impecable, un verdadero signo de que la comunidad ha adoptado por completo su nueva biblioteca y la han incorporado a la comunidad.

En los tres años desde que se abrió la biblioteca, la delincuencia ha descendido en el barrio, y hay un marcado aumento en el número de empresas de propiedad local en la zona. Santo Domingo Savio solía ser conocida como un semillero para la delincuencia y la actividad de pandillas, ¡pero ahora es famoso por su biblioteca!

Y si todo esto no es suficiente para que desee visitar la biblioteca, consideren que para llegar ahí, ¡usted tiene que viajar en el MetroCable! Este es parte del sistema de metro de Medellín y el único ejemplo en el mundo donde se han usado un sistema de telecabina para transporte público. Las vistas desde el MetroCable son absolutamente hermosas, y es probablemente uno de los mejores lugares para ver toda la ciudad desde arriba.

Y oye, incluso podrías encontrarse con un niño del barrio que ofrezca a contarle la historia de la biblioteca y su impacto en el barrio por una pequeña donación. El niño que se nos acerco tenía un discurso muy completo y muy bien memorizado acerca de la biblioteca. Y cuando traté de hacer una pregunta en la mitad de su discurso, ¡con vehemencia me hizo saber que no iba a responder preguntas sino hasta el final! Al final logre enterarme que el niño usa la biblioteca regularmente para completar las tareas escolares.

Paradero Para Libros Para Parques

Monday morning I was out walking around downtown Bogota when I happened upon this lovely little library in the park. This stand makes part of the Paradero Para Libros Para Parques (PPP), a program created about 10 years ago to help promote literacy across the country. The program is part of Fundalectura in association with city parks.

Currently there are 47 PPP in various neighborhoods of Bogota, and a total of 100 across the country. Each stand is staffed for about 12 hours a week by volunteer (they do receive a small stipend, but apparently it isn’t much).

The PPP are often open during the weekend and while in service they offer regular library services. Patrons can check books out, and the person staffing the PPP organizes activities (mainly for children), is available to answer questions, and often help children with their homework.

El lunes por la mañana estaba caminando por el centro de Bogotá cuando me encontré con esta pequeña y encantadora biblioteca en el parque. Este puesto hace que parte del Paradero Para Libros Para Parques (PPP), un programa creado hace como 10 años para ayudar a promover la alfabetización en todo el país. El programa es parte de Fundalectura en asociación con los parques de la ciudad.

Actualmente hay 47 PPP en varios barrios de Bogotá, y un total de 100 en todo el país. Cada puesto presta servicios a la comunidad más o menos por 12 horas a la semana y funcionan con la labor de voluntarios (entiendo que reciben algún pago, pero aparentemente no es mucho).

Usualmente los PPP estan abiertos durante el fin de semana y ofrecen servicios de biblioteca. Los usuarios pueden sacar libros, y el personal de la PPP organiza actividades (principalmente para los niños), está disponible para responder preguntas, y muchas veces ayudan a los niños con sus tareas.

Today I went to visit a couple of the libraries that make up the BiblioRed in Bogota. BiblioRed is Bogota’s public library systems, and it’s composed of a number of large, and small libraries, as well as a bibliobus. Today I went to visit the Biblioteca Pública Parque El Tunal, and the Biblioteca Pública Virgilio Barco, both of which are considered “bibliotecas mayores” within the systems (here is a organization map of the library systems).

As any other public library system BiblioRed offeres library services to the general public, but they also have specialized programs to reach hospitals, prisons, evacuation centers, and health centers. BiblioRed as an idea was conceived back in 1998, opening the doors to three mayor libraries in 2001; In 2008 they implemented the bibliobus (mobile library). Since the city implemented these public libraries they have been gathering awards and positive recognition, both locally and from abroad.

While I visited La biblioteca Parque El Tunal, I saw a number of facilities to help bring the community into the library; there is state of the art computer lad designed to assist patrons who deaf and/or blind; the library has a large auditorium that seats 230, and several training rooms which can be reserved by patrons; and there is a large children room with a collection that holds material in Spanish, English, and Braille. This room was full of kids when I was there. At the Virgilio Barco I ran into an awesome Salsa concert in full swing, a very moving photograph exhibit showing the effects of land mines in Colombia, and I happened upon the screening of short films about Bogota. Although I wasn’t able to visit the other major libraries in the system, it seems like they all have wonderful events going on all the time.

As a network, the library systems offers a number of online resources, including access to several mayor databases, recommendations for useful websites, and virtual reference services. All of these services are free, but to check items out, patrons must become “members” of the library, but at 5,000 Colombian pesos (about $2.50 dollars) I say it’s a great deal!

Hoy fui a visitar algunas de las bibliotecas que conforman la Bibliored en Bogotá. Bibliored es el sistemas de bibliotecas públicas de Bogotá, que están adscritas a la secretaria  de educación y está compuesto de una serie de bibliotecas mayores, otras pequeñas, así como un bibliobús. Hoy visite la Biblioteca Pública Parque El Tunal y la Biblioteca Pública Virgilio Barco, las cuales son considerados como “bibliotecas mayores” dentro del sistemas (aqui hay un mapa de la organización del sistemas bibliotecario).

Como cualquier otro sistema de bibliotecas públicas Bibliored ofrece servicios de biblioteca para el público en general pero también tienen programas especializados para llegar a hospitales, cárceles, centros de evacuación y centros de salud. BiblioRed como idea fue concebida en 1998, abriendo las puertas de tres bibliotecas mayores en 2001; En 2008 se implementó el bibliobús (biblioteca móvil). Desde que empezó a funcionar este sistema de bibliotecas públicas estas han ido acumulando premios y reconocimiento a nivel nacional e internacional.

Mientras estuve en La biblioteca Parque El Tunal vi una serie de instalaciones para ayudar a atraer a la comunidad a la biblioteca. Tienen un salón con la ultima tecnología diseñado para ayudar a usuarios sordos y ciegos, la biblioteca cuenta con un gran auditorio para 230 personas, varios cubiculos de estudio que pueden ser reservados por los usuarios, y hay una sala grande para niños con una colección que contiene materiales en Español, inglés, y braille. Esta habitación estaba llena de niños, cuando mientras visitaba la biblioteca. En la Virgilio Barco me encontré con un impresionante concierto de salsa en pleno apogeo, una exposición de fotografía muy conmovedora que muestra los efectos de las minas terrestres en Colombia, y me encontré con la proyección de cortometrajes sobre Bogotá. Aunque no pude visitar las demás bibliotecas del sistema parece que todas tienen eventos maravillosos para todo el mundo.

Como red, le sistemas de biblioteca ofrece una serie de recursos en línea, incluyendo el acceso a bases de datos, varias recomendaciones para los sitios web útiles, y servicios de referencia virtual. Todos estos servicios son gratuitos, pero para retirar material para llevarlo a casa los usuarios deben convertirse en “miembros” de la biblioteca, adquiriendo un carné de afiliado ¡pero por un costo de 5.000 pesos colombianos (alrededor de $ 2.50 dólares) esto es una ganga!

While I was growing up in Colombia libraries were very scarce, the only library one ever heard mentioned was the Biblioteca Luis Ángel Arango (BLAA), which I finally got to visit.

Mientras vivía en Colombia las biblioteca publicas siempre fueron muy escasas, y la única que uno oía nombre alguna vez era la Biblioteca Luis Ángel Arango (BLAA); solo hasta ahora logro visitarla.

While the Biblioteca Luis Ángel Arango is owned by the Banco de la República de Colombia, it is very much a public library, and open to everyone. The library’s collection is available to anyone who walks in the front door. All visitors can consult books while in the library and access a number of online databases that library subscribed to, but to check a book out, or to use the databases remotely, patrons must become members of the library. And while the BLAA is based in Bogota, the Banco de la República has smaller libraries and research centers across the country, which regularly exchange material through ILL.

Aunque la Biblioteca Luis Ángel Arango es propiedad del Banco de la República de Colombia, esta es totalmente una biblioteca pública, y está abierta a todos. La colección de la biblioteca está disponible para cualquier persona que entre por la puerta. Todos los visitantes pueden consultar libros y acceder a un número de bases de datos en línea a las que la biblioteca está suscrita, pero si quiere llevarse un libro a la casa, o utilizar las bases de datos de forma remota, deberán hacerse miembros de la biblioteca. Y mientras la BLAA tiene su sede principal en Bogotá, el Banco de la República tiene bibliotecas más pequeñas y centros de investigación por todo el país, y estas regularmente hacen intercambio a través de préstamos interbibliotecario.

The BLAA’s collection includes about 2 million items; most of the library’s collection is housed in Bogota, although they to have a remote storage facility in Ipiales where they keep material that doesn’t circulate very often. And while the library is technically not a legal deposit for the country, they have huge holdings of all the major newspapers, and many of the books published in the country. The library also has 11 reading rooms, each one specialized. There are reading rooms for maps, audio-visual material, periodicals, language learning, a children’s section, the Sciences, and Arts and Humanities. Each room has a reference librarian as well as a number of library assistants to help patrons.

La colección de la BLAA incluye cerca de 2 millones de artículos; la mayoría de la colección se encuentra en Bogotá, pero también tienen una instalación de almacenamiento remoto en Ipiales, donde se guarda el material que no circula con mucha frecuencia. Y mientras que la biblioteca no es técnicamente un depósito legal para el país, esta tiene enormes cantidades de todos los periódicos más importantes en Colombia, y muchos de los libros publicados en el país. La biblioteca también cuenta con 11 salas de lectura, cada uno especializada. Hay salas de lectura de mapas, material audiovisual, publicaciones periódicas, para aprendizaje de idiomas, una sección para niños, las Ciencias, y las Artes y las Humanidades. Cada salón de lectura tiene un bibliotecario de referencia, así como un número de auxiliares de biblioteca para ayudar a los usuarios.

One of the reading rooms that caught my attention was the music room. This room not only holds music related material, but has 3 rooms with pianos patrons can use for free, and 2 other rooms where users can borrow and practice with brass instruments. The music room also has 2 small auditoriums which can be check out by users to screen movies, or hold events, and where the library regularly schedules events that are open to the public. The library also includes a gorgeous auditorium said to have the best acoustics in all of South America.

Una de las salas de lectura que más me llamó la atención fue la sala de música. Esta sala no sólo tiene material relacionado con la música, pero tiene 3 habitaciones con pianos que se pueden utilizar de forma gratuita, y otras 2 habitaciones donde se pueden tomar prestado y practicar con instrumentos de viento. La sala de música también cuenta con 2 auditorios pequeños que se pueden usar para ver películas, u organizar otros eventos, y donde la biblioteca regularmente programas eventos que están abiertos al público. La biblioteca también incluye un auditorio magnífico, del cual dicen que tiene la mejor acústica en toda América del Sur.

Up until a few years ago when more public libraries open up in Bogota, the BLAA would see an average of 9 thousand visitors a day, 12 thousand on weekend days! I was there on a Friday afternoon, and I saw plenty of people there. Traffic in the BLAA is probably this high because many local universities don’t have large collections, and many send their students to the BLAA to do research. Because of this the BLAA collection includes a lot of university texts, but they also make a conscious effort to cater to users with little or no formal education.

Hasta hace unos años, cuando aún no habían otras bibliotecas públicas en Bogotá, la BLAA vería un promedio de 9 mil visitantes al día, ¡12 mil en los días de fin de semana! Yo estuve allí un viernes por la tarde, y vi un montón de gente allí. El tráfico en la BLAA es probablemente tan alto debido a que muchas universidades locales no tienen grandes colecciones, y muchos envían a sus estudiantes a la BLAA para hacer investigación. Debido a esto la colección de la BLAA incluye una gran cantidad de textos universitarios, pero también hacen un esfuerzo para atender a los usuarios con poca o ninguna educación formal.

Over the years the library has also begun creating a number of online collections, some of which highlight other holdings of the bank, including the Museo Botero, and La Casa de la Moneda. There is also an online library for childrenwhich offer full access to a number of Colombian children’s books. They also have an online version of a number of interesting exhibits. The library (through the bank) also has a Flickr account which includes some really fascinating images.

Con los años la biblioteca también ha comenzado a crear una serie de colecciones en línea, algunos de los que ponen en relieve otras explotaciones del banco, incluyendo el Museo Botero y La Casa de la Moneda. También hay una biblioteca en línea para niños que ofrecen acceso completo a una serie de libros colombianos para niños. También tienen una versión en línea de una serie de interesantes exposiciones. La biblioteca (a través del banco) también tiene una cuenta de Flickr, que incluye algunas imágenes realmente fascinantes.

Right now the BLAA has two temprary exhibits. The first one is about Colombia’s independence and includes pieces about Simon Bolivar, and Policarpa Salavarrieta. The other exhibit is about the history of cartoons in Colombia since independence. Both are very much worth seeing. The whole library is very much worth seeing; you can easily spend the entire day there and still have plenty to do.

Ahora mismo la BLAA tiene dos exposiciones temporales. La primera es sobre la independencia de Colombia, e incluye obras sobre Simón Bolívar y Policarpa Salavarrieta. La otra exposición es sobre la historia de las caricaturas en Colombia desde la independencia. Realmente vale la pena ver ambas. Enserio, vale la pena ver toda la biblioteca, fácilmente puede pasar el día entero allí y todavía tendría mucho que hacer.

I arrived in Bogota last night and today I’m off to visit a few libraries, my first stop is the Biblioteca Nacional de Colombia. As Colombia’s national library, one of their main responsibilities is serving as the country’s legal deposit.

The collection includes monographs, journals, and a large music collection. The library’s music collection includes both written music and recordings, a number of which were recoded in the library, back when they had a complete recording studio on the top floor. You can access all the digitized music scores here. They have also created a musical map of the country which will guide you through the various musical genres.

The library has also created a digital library where it is uploading and making freely available much of its collection.

Right now there is also a very complete exhibit about “La Voragine” (The Vortex) by José Eustacio Rivera, on the first floor of the library.

Anoche llegué a Bogotá y hoy me voy a visitar algunas bibliotecas, mi primera parada es la Biblioteca Nacional de Colombia. Como biblioteca nacional una de sus principales responsabilidades es servir como depósito legal del país.

La colección incluye monografías, publicaciones periódicas, y una gran colección musical. Colección de música de la biblioteca incluye tanto partituras como grabaciones, muchas de las cuales se grabaron en la biblioteca, cuando esta tenía un estudio de grabación completo en la planta superior. Puede acceder a toda la partituras digitalizadas aquí. También han creado un mapa musical del país que le guiará a través de los distintos géneros musicales.

La biblioteca también ha creado una biblioteca digital donde se carga y hacer libremente disponibles gran parte de su colección.

Ahora también hay una exposición muy completa sobre “La Vorágine” de José Eustasio Rivera, en el primer piso de la biblioteca.

Today I spent the day at the Library of Congress and loved it. I was there with my mother and brother and we took one of the guided tours of the building. This tour starts off with a short movie including a number of brief interviews with some of the librarians who highlight many of the treasures in the collection. The tour focuses more of the history of the library, and explain a good amount of the art found on the walls of the building, but doesn’t say much about the library’s holdings.

As a very brief recap; the library was established in 1800 by an act of Congress and was originally housed inside the Capitol building. In August of 1814 British troops set fire to the building, destroying the entire collection. Shortly thereafter, former president Thomas Jefferson offered to sell his entire collection to rebuild the library. Congress decides to buy his collection and begin to redevelop the library. This original collection is on display, and still in use.

In case you haven’t heard, the USA doesn’t technically have a national library, instead the Library of Congress (LOC) fills this role. And while the library works for the needs of Congress, they work to collect on all things USA related and their collections include millions of items from around the world. As the country’s legal deposit the LOC holds of copy of every single book published in the USA, and any book published abroad that has been translated for the USA market.

From the millions of items the LOC holds they have some of the most amazing collections in the country. The American Folklife Center gathers audio recordings on pretty much every posible topic, they collect and produce reading material for the blind and physically handicapped, American Memory provides access to many of their holdings related to American history in a variety of formats, THOMAS was launched in 1995 to make available legislation information, they also participate in the World Digital Library.

The LOC also has a lot of free resources for librarians. You can browse through their OPAC, search through their Authorities files, look through their Print & Photographs, and listen through their Sound Inventory. There is also the handy Z39.50 which allows you to run simultaneous searches through their catalogs and several other libraries around the globe.

All in all it was a great visit, even through it including a minor scare due to a suspected gunman in the area. The library was briefly locked down, but 30 minutes later we were on our way again. Before leaving the library we did see the oldest known map where the American continent is named as such, and a draft to the Declaration of Independence!

Hoy me pasé el día en la Biblioteca del Congreso y me encantó. Fui de visita con mi madre y mi hermano y tomamos una de las visitas guiadas del edificio. Este tur comienza con una breve película incluyendo una serie de breves entrevistas con algunos de los bibliotecarios que ponen de relieve muchos de los tesoros de la colección. La gira se centra más de la historia de la biblioteca, y explicar una buena cantidad del arte encontradas en las paredes del edificio pero no dice mucho acerca de los colección de la biblioteca.

Como un resumen muy breve, la biblioteca fue creada en 1800 por una ley del Congreso y fue alojado en el interior del edificio del Capitolio. En agosto de 1814 las tropas británicas prendieron fuego al edificio destruyendo toda la colección. Poco después el eh presidente Thomas Jefferson ofreció a vender toda su colección para reconstruir la biblioteca. El Congreso decide comprar su colección y empezar a rehabilitar la biblioteca. Esta colección original está en exhibición, y todavía en uso.

En caso de que no han oído, los EE.UU. técnicamente no tiene una biblioteca nacional, en su lugar la Biblioteca del Congreso (LOC) cumple este papel. Y mientras que la biblioteca trabaja para abastecer las necesidades del Congreso, también recoger material relacionado con EE.UU., además sus colecciones incluyen millones de artículos de todo el mundo. Como el depósito legal del país, el a LOC guarda copia de cada libro publicado en los EE.UU., y cualquier libro publicado en el extranjero que se ha traducido para el mercado de EE.UU..

Entre los millones de artículos de la LOC esta tiene algunos de los coleccione más sorprendentes en el país. El American Folklife Center reúne grabaciones de audio de prácticamente cualquier tema, recogen y producen material de lectura para ciegos y disminuidos físicos, el American Memory proporciona acceso a muchas de sus propiedades relacionadas con la historia de Estados Unidos en una variedad de formatos, THOMAS fue puesto en marcha en 1995 para que información sobre legislación fuese disponible de manera gratuita, y también participan en la Biblioteca Digital Mundial.

La LOC también tiene una gran cantidad de recursos gratis para los bibliotecarios. Usted puede navegar a través de su catálogo en línea, buscar a través de sus archivos de autoridades, mirar a través de sus láminas y fotografías, y escuchar a través de su inventario de sonido. En total fue una visita estupenda, incluso incluyendo un pequeño susto debido a un supuesto agresor armado en la zona. Boston’s Chinatown used to have a public library, but this library has had its ups and downs. It opened in 1896, closed in 1936, reopened in 1951, and closed again in 1956. After this there was a bookmobile that attempted to fill the void, but this didn’t last too long.

For several years now there has been a local campaign to once again have a local library, and while there is still work to be done on this front, there is a temporary relief. Given the economic climate and the high level of empty stores, some local activist came up with a clever idea, a Chinatown Storefront Library! This makeshift library opened to the public today and will offer library services for the next three months. The rent-free space was donated by Archstone, and the community worked to collect book, find consultants, and invite local librarians to help with the project.

For a temporary project, they are mightily well organized. Right now they are running an OPAC using LibraryThing, with a collection including a good amount of material in Chinese, much of it geared towards a younger users. They will also be running a number community events, such as story time, drawing labs, an urban wildlife program in collaboration with the Audubon Society, movie nights, and zine workshops.

Leading up to opening day, there has a lot of community outreach, some of it in the form of a bookmobile visiting a number of locations in the neighborhood simultaneously offering library services, and encouraging locals to help out with this project. This is a great project, and I wish them much success!

El bario chino de Boston solía tener una biblioteca pública pero esta biblioteca ha tenido sus altibajos. Se inauguró en 1896, cerró en 1936, reabierto en 1951, y volvió a cerrarse en 1956. Después hubo una biblioteca móvil que intentó llenar el vacío pero esto no duró mucho tiempo.

Desde hace varios años ha habido una campaña para volver a tener una biblioteca publica en el barrio y aunque aún queda trabajo por hacer en este frente, hay un alivio temporal. Dado el clima económico y el alto nivel de tiendas vacías algunos activistas locales llegaron a una solución muy creativa, la ¡Chinatown Storefront Library! Esta biblioteca improvisada abrió hoy al público y ofrecerá servicios de biblioteca durante los próximos tres meses. El alquiler de espacio fue donado por Archstone, y la comunidad comenzó a reunir libro, encontró consultores, e invito a los bibliotecarios locales para ayudar con el proyecto.

Para un proyecto temporal este están muy bien organizado. Ahora mismo están usando un catálogo en línea usando LibraryThing, y tienen una colección que incluye una buena cantidad de material en chino, gran parte orientada a los usuarios más jóvenes. También se ejecuta un número de eventos de la comunidad tales como la hora del cuento, los laboratorios de dibujo, un programa de la fauna urbana en colaboración con la Sociedad Audubon, noches de cine, y talleres de zines.

Mientras se llegaba en día de apertura hubo mucho trabajo de alcance a la comunidad, aveces en forma de una biblioteca móvil que visitaba varios lugares del barrio. Este ofrecía servicios de biblioteca y animaba a la gente a colaborar con el proyecto. Este realmente es un gran proyecto, y les deseo mucho éxito!

Today I spent the morning at Trinity College. After a quick tour of the campus I headed towards the library where I wanted to see the Book of Kells, and the the Long Room.

The Book of Kells is another one of these really old bibles, this one dating back to ca. 800, and it is currently bound as multiple volumes. The books are illuminated manuscripts containing the four Gospels of the New Testament. What sets this manuscript apart, is both it’s age, as well as the detail of the illustrations included. It derives its names from the Kells Abby where it was housed for many centuries.

El Libro de Kells es otra de estas bíblias muy antiguas, y se remonta a ca. 800; actualmente está encuadernada en varios volúmenes. Los libros son manuscritos iluminados que contienen los cuatro Evangelios del Nuevo Testamento. Lo que diferencia a este manuscrito, es su edad, así como el detalle de las ilustraciones incluidas. El manuscrito deriva su nombre Monasterio Kells donde se alojo por muchos siglos.

The room where the Book of Kells is located also contains a detailed exhibit explaining its history, how it was transcribed, how different pigments were created, and how the manuscript itself was made. There I found out that the Book of Kells was created for use on special occasions, and that is is full of textual errors.

After seeing the Book of Kells, I continued on to the Long Room, which is the main chamber of the original library. The room was built in 1850, originally with a flat ceiling, but it was remodeled in 1865 to include the vault ceiling that it is famous for today.

The Long Room houses over 200,000 of the library’s oldest books, and despite the hundreds of tourist that go through everyday, it is actually a working library.

Today I got a “behind the scenes” tour of the National Library of Ireland! On my visit I found out that the library is quite a welcoming place to people from all around the world. Any local resident, or any person with a passport in hand can receive a library card, and use the library’s collection.

Hoy me dieron un tour “detrás de las escenas” de la Biblioteca Nacional de Irlanda! En mi visita me enteré que la biblioteca es un lugar acogedor para personas de todo el mundo. Cualquier residente local, o cualquier persona con pasaporte en mano pueden recibir una tarjeta de la biblioteca y utilizar la colección.

Being the National Library, the library is required to serve as a legal deposit for all the material published in Ireland. When I asked how these responsibilities worked in relation with the British Library’s duties as a national deposit for Ireland, I found out that Ireland has multiple legal deposits, several of them being college libraries. Since college libraries are not always open to the general public, the idea is that at least the copies held for deposit at the National Library will be available to everyone who wishes to use them.

The library is very popular during the summer months with American’s who come here to do genealogy work. For this type of research the library has holdings of parish records on microfilm with the original documents being held by individual parishes.

As would be expected the library also has the world’s largest collection on Irish writers, including a huge collection on W.B Yeats. It turns out that over the last several decades, the Yeats family has been gradually donating most of their material to the library, who in turn allows the world to access it.

Como era de esperar la biblioteca también tiene la colección más grande del mundo de escritores irlandeses, incluyendo una enorme colección de W.B. Yeats. Technological development is ongoing in the Library. They do have an online catalog, but this only holds records for material acquired since1990. Earlier holdings are in an actual card catalog, or in large books. The library also has a small, separate card catalog for bible material, and another for maps. The library is currently working on various digitization projects, including the recent launch of a new online site holding 20,000 photographs from the National Photographic Archives. Currently, there is no wi-fi in the building.

La tecnología en la biblioteca esta en proceso de desarollo. Si tienen un catálogo en línea, pero este sólo tiene registros de material adquiridos después de 1990. Los registros de fechas previas están en un catálogo de fichas, o en grandes tomos. La biblioteca también tiene un pequeño catálogo de fichas separado para material bíblico, y otro para  mapas. Tampoco hay wi-fi en el edificio.

For some years now, the library has been working on organizing a number of exhibits and special events to attract visitors to the library. Every summer they organize something special on W.B. Yeats to coincide with it is an ongoing multi award winning exhibit in the library, paired with an online version of it, and a series of lunch time plays based on Yeats’ work. There is a second exhibit titled “Strangers to Citizens: The Irish in Europe”, about early migration to the UK, and continental Europe, much of it propelled by men’s desired to obtain a religious education. At other times of the year they organize lecture series, poetry readings, and other smaller exhibits.

Desde hace algunos años, la biblioteca ha estado organizando una serie de exposiciones y eventos especiales para atraer visitantes. Cada verano se organizan algo especial sobre W.B. Yeats. Este año es una exposición en la biblioteca, la cual ha ganado varios premios, junto con una versión en línea de la misma, y una serie teatral basadas en su obra, presentada la hora del almuerzo. Hay una segunda exposición titulada “Extraños a Ciudadanos: El irlandés en Europa”, sobre la primera migración hacia el Reino Unido,y  Europa continental, migración que en gran parte fue impulsada por hombres que deseaban obtener una educación religiosa. En otros momentos del año organizar series de conferencias, lecturas de poesía, y otras exposiciones más pequeñas.

The library is physically located on Kildare St. right between the National Museum, and the National Gallery, this last one holding a sizable collection of Jack Yeats‘ paintings. When I asked if the building had always been the National library, I found out that the library, along with the museum made up one family’s home!

The library’s photograph archive it located in a different part of town, but I stopped by there as well, and got to see a great exhibit titled “If Ever you go to Dublin Town” which gathered black and white photography is Dublin in the 1950 and 1960.

The central reading room is a treat in itself, with a beautiful vault ceiling, so if you’re in the area, stop by and take a look!

This afternoon I had an appointment for a tour of The British Library. The library itself is huge, taking up the better part of a city block, and having so much storage it has 5 underground levels full of books, plus additional storage at a remote location. Being the national library, it is in charge of keeping a copy of every single book published in the UK and Ireland; but by now this means more than 15 millions books, and counting.

But impressive numbers aside, the library also holds some very impressive items and special collections. As you walk into the building you can’t help but notice a glass column, full of books, reaching as far as the ceiling. This is known as the Kings Library; it’s the collection of King George III, and was donated to the nation by his son George IV back in 1823. The collection includes 65,000 volumes, 20,000 pamphlets, and over 400 manuscripts. And this is a working library, consulted daily by researches from around the world.

The library also includes The Sir John Ritblat Gallery: Treasures of the British Library; here you’ll find manuscripts for Alice in Wonderland, The Hours, compositions by the Beatles, Leonardo da Vinci’s notebook, illuminated manuscripts from India, Shakespeare’s first folio, Sultan Baybar’s Qu’ran, two Gutenberg Bibles, and in a small side room, the Magna Carta! (And by the way, you can actually page through many of these treasure through the library’s Virtual Books collection.)

The treasure room also holds the library’s holdings of the Codex Sinaiticus. This codex, written well over 1600 years ago contains the Christina bible in Greek, including the oldest complete copy of the New Testament. The codex has been divided into four pieces, with the British Library holding 694 pages of it, the Leipzig University Library holds 86 pages, the St. Catherine’s Monastery in Sinai holds 36 pages, and the National Library of Russia in St. Petersburg holds 8 pages.

The British Library acquired its portion of the codex when it purchased it from the book dealer Ernest Maggs on December 27, 1933, The codex has been on public display at the library every since. Currently there is a project to digitally reunite the full codex, and the British Library has another display in one of the main corridors explaining the project.

Yes, the British Library was quite impressive, the only thing I regret was not being able to see that gorgeous round reading room I’ve seen in so many pictures. That reading room is in the British Museum, former home to the British Library, until the mid 90s when the outgrew the space, and moved to their current location. And I did go to the British Museum to see the famous reading room, but unfortunately it is closed to the public until 2012.

I went back to the library on Sunday to see the Henry VIII exhibit which was also very good. I spent close to 3 hours looking at the collection, which included old portraits, letters, diaries, legal documents, books, and even a knight’s helmet. The exhibit documented Henry VIII entire life, from a childhood reared by women, to being crowned as a teenager, along with lots of primary documentation on his many marriages, and as well as his political legacy.

Suffice to say that I’ve never before seen people line up, waiting for a library to open its doors on a Sunday morning.

La biblioteca es enorme, cubriendo la mayor parte de una manzana, y tiene tanta capacidad de almacenamiento que tiene 5 niveles subterráneos llenos de libros, además de almacenamiento en una ubicación remota. Siendo la biblioteca nacional, esta encargada de mantener una copia de cada libro publicado en el Reino Unido e Irlanda; por ahora esto significa más de 15 millones de libros, y creciendo cada día.

Impresionante, pero dejando los números de lado, la biblioteca también tiene algunas piezas muy impresionante en sus colecciones especiales. Entrando al edificio no se puede evitar notar una columna de vidrio, que llega hasta el techo, llena de libros. Esta se la Biblioteca del Rey; es la colección del rey George III, y fue donada a la nación por su hijo George IV en 1823. La colección incluye 65.000 volúmenes, 20.000 folletos, y más de 400 manuscritos. Es una biblioteca de trabajo, consultada a diario por investigadores de todo el mundo.

Fui hasta Museo Británico para ver la famosa sala de lectura, pero, desafortunadamente está cerrada al público hasta el 2012.

Volví a la biblioteca el domingo para ver la exposición de Henry VIII, también muy buena. Pasé cerca de 3 horas mirando la colección, que incluía retratos antiguos, cartas, diarios, documentos jurídicos, libros, e incluso un casco de caballero. La exposición documenta toda la vida, de Henry VIII, desde una infancia criados por mujeres, hasta ser coronado siendo todavía un adolescente, junto con un montón de documentación primaria en sus muchos matrimonios, así como su legado político.

Basta decir que nunca antes había visto a nadie haciendo fila, un domingo por la mañana, a la espera de que una biblioteca abra sus puertas.
