Yesterday the Guardian posted an article about a new database the BBC put together called Wildlife Finder. The site gathers hundreds of video footage, from over 30 BBC programs,of wild animals the world over. Videos are organized by type of animal, habitat, adaptation features, or ecozone.

Each entry also includes the animal’s scientific classification, adaptation information which comes from the Animal Diversity Web, habitat, and a couple paragraphs providing some basic information, the content of which comes from Wikipedia. You’ll also find information on the animal’s conservation status, and outside links for further information. There is also a short clip of the sounds each animal makes. Sir David Attenborough is featured in a number of the videos.

The site seems like a great resource, but I’ve been trying to access it for two days now, but instead of videos all I get is a notice saying “This content doesn’t seem to be working. Try again later.” I’ll keep trying, but hopefully the folks at the BBC will fix this soon.

10/01/09 – I heard that the videos are only available to viewers in the UK. Even without the video portion this is still a great site.

Ayer The Guardian publicó un artículo sobre una nueva base de datos de la BBC llamado Wildlife Finder. El sitio reúne cientos de vídeo de más de 30 programas de la BBC, de animales salvajes en todo el mundo. Los vídeos están organizados por tipo de animal, hábitat, características de adaptación, o ecozona.

Cada entrada incluye también la clasificación científica de los animales, la información que proviene Animal Diversity Web, su hábitat y un par de párrafos proporcionar cierta información básica, cuyo contenido proviene de Wikipedia. Usted también encontrará información sobre el estado de conservación de los animales, y enlaces externos para más información. También hay un  clip breve de los sonidos de cada animal. Sir David Attenborough aparece en varios de los videos.

El sitio parece un gran recurso pero he estado tratando de acceder desde hace dos días y en vez de vídeos lo único que consigo es un aviso que dice “Este contenido no parece estar funcionando. Inténtelo de nuevo más tarde.” Voy a seguir intentando, pero espero que la gente de la BBC arregle esto pronto.

10/01/09 – Escuche decir que los videos sólo están disponibles para los usuarios en el Reino Unido. Incluso sin la parte de vídeo esto sigue siendo un gran sitio.

Steven McCurry

National Geographic has been around for well over a century and have managed to gather a very impressive photography collection over the years. The magazine specializes on photojournalism, pairing powerful images to written articles, and over time had left us with images that have been seen the world over; after all who hasn’t seen Steven McCurry‘s photograph of the Afghan Girl?

National Geographic has made many of these images available on their website, and currently the Steven Kasher Gallery in Chelsea is hosting an exhibit of some of this work. The gallery exhibit opened on Thursday, September 17, and will be showing 150 photographs, many of which were never published in the magazine. The exhibit closes on October 17, 2009.

La revista se especializa en fotoperiodismo, vinculando poderosas imágenes a los artículos escritos, y atravez de los años nos han dejado con imágenes que han dado la vuelta al mundo- después de todo ¿quien no ha visto la fotografía de la niña Afgana tomada por Steve McCurry?

National Geographic ha hecho disponibles muchas de estas imágenes en su página web, y actualmente la galería Steven Kasher en Chelsea está organizando una exposición de algunos de estos trabajos. La exhibición de la galería fue inaugurada el jueves, 17 de septiembre, y reune 150 fotografías, muchas de las cuales nunca fueron publicados en la revista. La exposición cierra el 17 de octubre de 2009.

Today I got a “behind the scenes” tour of the National Library of Ireland! On my visit I found out that the library is quite a welcoming place to people from all around the world. Any local resident, or any person with a passport in hand can receive a library card, and use the library’s collection.

Hoy me dieron un tour “detrás de las escenas” de la Biblioteca Nacional de Irlanda! En mi visita me enteré que la biblioteca es un lugar acogedor para personas de todo el mundo. Cualquier residente local, o cualquier persona con pasaporte en mano pueden recibir una tarjeta de la biblioteca y utilizar la colección.

Being the National Library, the library is required to serve as a legal deposit for all the material published in Ireland. When I asked how these responsibilities worked in relation with the British Library’s duties as a national deposit for Ireland, I found out that Ireland has multiple legal deposits, several of them being college libraries. Since college libraries are not always open to the general public, the idea is that at least the copies held for deposit at the National Library will be available to everyone who wishes to use them.

Por ser la biblioteca nacional, la biblioteca funciona como depósito legal de todo el material publicado en Irlanda. Cuando pregunté cómo estas responsabilidades se relacionan con las de la Biblioteca Británica, que también tiene obligaciones como depósito nacional de Irlanda, me enteré de que Irlanda cuenta con varios depósitos legales, muchos de los cuales están en bibliotecas universitarias. The library is very popular during the summer months with American’s who come here to do genealogy work. For this type of research the library has holdings of parish records on microfilm with the original documents being held by individual parishes.

Al parecer, la biblioteca es muy popular durante los meses de verano con Estadounidenses que vienen a hacer trabajo de genealogía . Para este tipo de investigación la biblioteca tiene una vasta colección de registros parroquiales en microfilm, y aunque los documentos originales están en las parroquias, parece que es fácil visitar los documentos originales.

As would be expected the library also has the world’s largest collection on Irish writers, including a huge collection on W.B Yeats. It turns out that over the last several decades, the Yeats family has been gradually donating most of their material to the library, who in turn allows the world to access it.

Como era de esperar la biblioteca también tiene la colección más grande del mundo de escritores irlandeses, incluyendo una enorme colección de W.B. Yeats. Resulta que en las últimas décadas, la familia Yeats ha ido donando la mayor parte de su material a la biblioteca, que a su vez permite que el mundo pueda acceder este material.

Technological development is ongoing in the Library. They do have an online catalog, but this only holds records for material acquired since1990. Earlier holdings are in an actual card catalog, or in large books. The library also has a small, separate card catalog for bible material, and another for maps. The library is currently working on various digitization projects, including the recent launch of a new online site holding 20,000 photographs from the National Photographic Archives. Currently, there is no wi-fi in the building.

La tecnología en la biblioteca esta en proceso de desarollo. Si tienen un catálogo en línea, pero este sólo tiene registros de material adquiridos después de 1990. Los registros de fechas previas están en un catálogo de fichas, o en grandes tomos. La biblioteca también tiene un pequeño catálogo de fichas separado para material bíblico, y otro para  mapas. Tampoco hay wi-fi en el edificio.

For some years now, the library has been working on organizing a number of exhibits and special events to attract visitors to the library. Every summer they organize something special on W.B. Yeats to coincide with it is an ongoing multi award winning exhibit in the library, paired with an online version of it, and a series of lunch time plays based on Yeats’ work. There is a second exhibit titled “Strangers to Citizens: The Irish in Europe”, about early migration to the UK, and continental Europe, much of it propelled by men’s desired to obtain a religious education. At other times of the year they organize lecture series, poetry readings, and other smaller exhibits.

Desde hace algunos años, la biblioteca ha estado organizando una serie de exposiciones y eventos especiales para atraer visitantes. Cada verano se organizan algo especial sobre W.B. Yeats. Este año es una exposición en la biblioteca, la cual ha ganado varios premios, junto con una versión en línea de la misma, y una serie teatral basadas en su obra, presentada la hora del almuerzo. Hay una segunda exposición titulada “Extraños a Ciudadanos: El irlandés en Europa”, sobre la primera migración hacia el Reino Unido,y  Europa continental, migración que en gran parte fue impulsada por hombres que deseaban obtener una educación religiosa. En otros momentos del año organizar series de conferencias, lecturas de poesía, y otras exposiciones más pequeñas.

The library is physically located on Kildare St. right between the National Museum, and the National Gallery, this last one holding a sizable collection of Jack Yeats‘ paintings. When I asked if the building had always been the National library, I found out that the library, along with the museum made up one family’s home!

La biblioteca se encuentra físicamente en Kildare St. entre el Museo Nacional, y la Galería Nacional, este último tiene una importante colección de pinturas de Jack Yeats. Cuando pregunté si el edificio siempre había sido la Biblioteca Nacional, me enteré que la biblioteca, junto con el museo y la galería eran una sola casa familiar!

The library’s photograph archive it located in a different part of town, but I stopped by there as well, and got to see a great exhibit titled “If Ever you go to Dublin Town” which gathered black and white photography is Dublin in the 1950 and 1960.

La biblioteca incluye un archivo fotografico que se encuentra en una parte diferente de la ciudad, pero pase por allí, a ver una exposición titulada “Si alguna vez vas a la ciudad de Dublín“, que reune fotografía en blanco y negro en el Dublín de 1950, y 1960.

The central reading room is a treat in itself, with a beautiful vault ceiling, so if you’re in the area, stop by and take a look!

La sala de lectura es un placer en sí mismo, con techo de bóveda hermoso, así que si usted está en la zona, pase a echar un vistazo!

This morning I started exploring Berlin, and one of the sites I wanted to make sure I visited was the memorial for the book burning event that took place on May 10, 1933, when students burned over 25,000 books considered “un-German”. It took me a while to find it, and it was only after I asked around that I figured out why I couln’t find it; a large tent for Berlin’s Fashion Week is sitting right over the memorial (yes, lovely contrast there). Still, I kept asking around and found out that the memorial is still open to the public, through a small side entrance.

Here are a couple of pictures I took there.

Esta mañana he comenzado a explorar Berlín, y uno de los sitios que quería asegurarse de visitar es el monumento a la quema de libros que tuvo lugar el 10 de mayo de 1933, cuando los estudiantes quemaron más de 25.000 libros considerados “anti-alemanes”. Me tomó un tiempo encontrarlo, y fue sólo después de preguntar que me di cuenta por que no lo veia, encima hay una tienda grandisima donde se esta organizando la Semana de la Moda de Berlín (sí, lindo el contraste). Igual segui preguntando y descubri que el lugar todavia sigue abierta al público, a través de una pequeña entrada lateral.

There is a great collection on Flickr of photographs from the battle at Normandie. The collection includes close to 3,000 images documenting the event; information and tags for this collection are all in French.

This was a project led by Conseil Régional de Basse-Normandie (Regional Council of Basse-Normandie) in 2004, for the D-Day 60th anniversary. The photo source for the project is the Archives Normandie 1939-1945. You can access the Flickr collection here.

As the name implies, Latinas in History is about Latinas around the world, and throughout the ages (although with heavy emphasis on the USA); both the stories of individual women, as well as the groups they form. The site offers a few essays with a general overview of Latinas in the USA, which helps contextualize the large collection of biographies to follow. They include world reknown Latinas, including the likes of Gloria Anzaldua, Vicky Carr, “Lolita” Lebron, Dolores Huerta, Carolina Herrera, and many, many others. Each entry contains a small summary of the woman’s life, or main acomplishment, as well as links to outside sources. These are also organized by topics, such as Labor activism, law, journalism, music and dance, etc.

The site also contains resources to teach about Latina Women in the USA, including lesson plans, mostly geared towards highschool and undergraduate students.

All in all, a very interesting site. Just be warned that music will automatically stream when you load the site.

Como el nombre implica, Latinas in History es un sitio web sobre mujeres Latinas alrededor del mundo y a lo largo de los años (pero con énfasis en los EEUU). El sitio contiene historias de mujeres individuales, así mismo como mujeres y los diversos grupos que forman. También encontrara varios ensayos ofreciendo una visión general de las mujeres Latinas en EEUU que le ayudaran a contextualizar la gran colección de biografías a seguir. La sección de biografías incluye muchas mujeres renombradas, como lo son Gloria Anzaldua, Vicky Carr, “Lolita” Lebron, Dolores Huerta, Carolina Herrara, y muchas otras. Cada entrada contiene una breve explicación de su vida, y logras así como varios enlaces a otros recursos en la web. Las biografías también están organizadas por temas, tales como activismo, derecho, periodismo, música y dance, etc.

Para aquellos interesados en ensenar el tema, el sitio ofrece recursos para usar en el salón, para estudiantes de bachiderato y pregrado.
En sí, un sitio muy interesante. Pero tenga pendiente que la pagina tiene música.

Today the World Digital Library goes live! The project has been in the works for about 4 years now, and was initially conceived by James Billington of the USA Library of Congress (LOC), and developed by UNESCO and LOC. The site will function in seven languages and will showcase digital treasures from around the globe and throughout the ages. It is hoped that the site will help promote international understanding and expand non-English, non-Western content online.

¡Hoy la Biblioteca Digital Mundial se lanza en vivo! El proyecto ha estado en las planeación cerca de 4 años y fue inicialmente concebido por James Billington de la Biblioteca del Congreso de EE.UU. (LOC), y desarrollado por la UNESCO y la LOC. El sitio funcionará en siete idiomas y mostrará tesoros digitales de todo el mundo y a lo largo de los siglos. Se espera que el sitio ayudará a promover el entendimiento internacional y expandir el contenido de la web en idiomas diferentes al inglés, y de regiones no occidentales.

This really is a fascinating collection. You can search it by geographic region, time period, topic, holding institution, and type of item. While looking  you’ll find old photographs, curated videos, detailed explanations of the items, and links to share these treasures through some of the most commons web 2.0 venues, such as Facebook and Twitter.

Esta realmente es una colección fascinante. Se puede buscar por región geográfica, período de tiempo, tema, institución, y el tipo de elemento. Mientras ojea la colección encontrará fotografías viejas, videos, explicaciones detalladas de los artículos, y enlaces pare compartir estos tesoros a través de algunos de los más comunes sitios web 2.0, tales como Facebook y Twitter.

Here’s a very interesting photo essay from Wired magazine about the impact of new technologies on a small onion growing town in Colombia. The author and photographer capture a town that still tends the land with the same techniques used for hundreds of years, while simultaneously becoming connected to the outside world through the use of cellphones, computers, video games and movies.

Aquí les comparto un foto-ensayo súper interesante de la revista Wired, sobre como un pequeño pueblo Colombiano se está conectando al mundo por medio de nuevas tecnologías. El autor y fotógrafo captura un pueblo que todavía ara la tierra de la misma manera que se ha hecho por siglos, mientras simultáneamente empieza a usar teléfonos celulares, computadores, juegos de video y películas.

The Library of Congress (LOC) just set up a YouTube account where they will be sharing a number of the treasured they hold. They currently have over 70 videos uploaded, but they promise to regularly continue adding more material. Right now they have their videos organized in a number of playlists; author presentations, industrial films, and the earliest films made, among others. Some of the videos were initially created as motion films, while others are a collection of images on the specific topic. Every videos comes with a brief summary description, publisher’s information, performer, and LOC subject headings.

Many of the videos shared on YouTube can also be found on the LOC.gov website and at American Memory site.

La Biblioteca del Congreso (LOC) en USA acaba de crear una cuenta en YouTube donde estará compartiendo algunos de los tesoros que guardan. En este momento tiene poco más de 70 videos, pero prometen agregar más material. Ahora su colección esta organizada en varias categorías; presentaciones de autores, películas industriales, y las primeras películas, entre otros. Algunos de los videos fueron creados originalmente como películas, mientras otros son una colección de imágenes estáticas sobre determinado tema. Cada video trae una descripción breve, información sobre quien publico el material originalmente, los actores, y las categorías de clasificación que la biblioteca a agregado.

Muchos de los videos compartidos en YouTube también pueden encontrarse en LOC.gov y en el sitio de American Memory.
