The Colombian Biblioburro has gotten a lot of press over the last few years. I’ve read articles in the NYT, around the blogosphere, and writen one myself (here), but here’s a video that will give you a visual of the work of this tireless librarian. (And it looks like he could use the help of a good cataloger to organize all his collection.)

El Biblioburro colombiano ha recibido una gran cantidad de prensa durante los últimos años. He leído artículos sobre el proyecto en el New York Times, alrededor de la blogosfera, incluso escribí sobre el tema aquí también, pero aquí hay un video que le dará una imagen visual de la obra de este incansable bibliotecario. (Y parece que él podría utilizar la ayuda de un buen catalogador que le organize toda su colección.)

Una Botella de Ron pa’l Flaco: Crónicas Caleñas by Juan Manuel Caicedo

This is a collection of personal narratives by students affiliated with Universidad ICESI, which cover a wide range of Caleño society.

Here you’ll meet a young Goth woman, an old Japanese-Colombian woman, a street mime who sets up office at a city stoplight, a Cuban immigrant trying to adjust to her new life, and a local mortician who’s seen the effects of years of violence.

You’ll also find stories by several people who were kidnapped from the church La Maria, describing various aspects of the ordeal.

All in all it was a great trip down memory lane for me, and it will be a great introduction to the city for those who still haven’t visited.

Esta es una colección de relatos personales de estudiantes afiliados con la Universidad ICESI, que cubren una amplia gama de la sociedad Caleña.

Aquí conocerás a una joven mujer “momia”, una mujer mayor que descendencia japonesa y colombiana, un mimo de la calle que establece la oficina en un semáforo de la ciudad, una inmigrante cubana tratando de adaptarse a su nueva vida, y un mortuorio local que ha visto los efectos de años de violencia.

También encontrarás historias de varias personas que fueron secuestrados de la iglesia La María describiendo diversos aspectos de la experiencia.

En total, a mi me trajo memorias muy gratas de mi Cali Bella, y será una gran introducción a la ciudad para aquellos que todavía no ha visitado.

The Red de Bibliotecas will provide you with all the information you may need about the network of libraries in the Medellín area. The main page regularly posts related stories, news updates, and other relevant items.

Along the left hand side you can find links that will give you a better idea of the services offered by this library network. Under “Bibliotecas” you’ll find basic contact information and location to the participating libraries. The link for “Bibliotecólogos” provides a space for library professionals to share resources, tips, and other relevant information. They also have a brand new blog that serves the same purpose of sharing resources. “Cinéfilos” gather information about movies being screed around the city, either at libraries or as part of film festivals. There are also links for cultural events, and multimedia projects. These multimedia projects are really good, and most tell stories about the region. “Pinacoteca” share art created by Colombian artists.

Alongside the top of the page you can find links to the region’s shared OPAC, their Virtual Library which offers access to online encyclopedias, journals, and links to many other digital initiatives around the country and throughout the Spanish speaking world. There is also a map which plots out the location of all these libraries, and provides you with contact information.

This is a very well planed and organized site. I encourage you to spend some time exploring it because chances are you’ll find something of interest.

La Red de Bibliotecas le proporcionará toda la información que necesite sobre la red de bibliotecas en el área de Medellín. La página principal le ofrece actualizaciones de noticias y otros temas pertinentes.

A lo largo del lado izquierdo se pueden encontrar enlaces que le darán una mejor idea de los servicios ofrecidos por esta red de bibliotecas. En “Bibliotecas” usted encontrará información básica de contacto y la ubicación de las bibliotecas participantes. El enlace para “Bibliotecólogos” proporciona un espacio para profesionales del campo para compartir recursos, consejos y otra información pertinente. También tienen un blog nuevo que tiene el mismo propósito de compartir recursos. “Cinéfilos” reunir información sobre presentaciones de películas en la ciudad, ya sea en bibliotecas o en el marco de algún festivales de cine. También hay enlaces para eventos culturales, y proyectos multimedia. Estos proyectos multimedia son realmente buenos, y la mayoría cuentan historias acerca de la región. “Pinacoteca” compartir arte creado por artistas colombianos.

Junto a la parte superior de la página puede encontrar enlaces al catalogo en línea de la red, su Biblioteca Virtual ofrece acceso en línea a enciclopedias, revistas, y enlaces a otras muchas iniciativas digitales en todo el país y en todo el mundo de habla hispana. También hay un mapa que traza la ubicación de todas estas bibliotecas, y le proporciona información de contacto.

Este sitio está muy bien planeado y organizado. Los animo a pasar algún tiempo explorando porque lo más probable es que encontrará algo de interés.

The Fundación Empresas Públicas de Medellín (EPM) is a non-profit organization that works to promote a variety of projects that aim at raising awareness about the need to preserve the city’s public services and environmental resources.

Some of the programs they work on are an interactive museum focused on science and technology; a series of tours where elementary aged children can visit some of the city’s main attractions and learn about their history; and a network of public libraries.

All this hard work just won the foundation an Access to Learning Award from the Gates Foundation for their work with public libraries.   EPM has focus on promoting a sense of community through these libraries, making a special effort to reach out to traditionally marginalized groups, such as low-income people, housewives, and senior citizens.

So far the libraries have had a very positive impact on their communities, including the reduction of violence, as well as the narrowing of the digital divide.

Too bad the people at the Gates Foundation can’t consistently spell Colombia correctly on their website… Problem fixed, thank you (08/26/09).

La Fundación Empresas Públicas de Medellín (EPM) es una organización sin ánimo de lucro que promueve una variedad de proyectos que tienen como objetivo crear conciencia sobre la necesidad de preservar los servicios públicos de la ciudad y los recursos ambientales.

Algunos de los programas que promueven incluyen un museo interactivo de ciencia y tecnología; una serie de giras por la ciudad en donde los niños de primaria pueden visitar algunos de los principales atractivos de esta y conocer su historia; y una red de bibliotecas públicas.

Todo su esfuerzo y trabajo con las bibliotecas públicas les acaba de ganar el premio Access to Learning Award de la Fundación Gates. EPM tiene como énfasis promover el sentido de comunidad de los residentes de la ciudad a través de estas bibliotecas, haciendo un esfuerzo especial para llegar a los grupos tradicionalmente marginados, como las personas de bajos ingresos, las amas de casa y los jubilados.

Hasta ahora, las bibliotecas han tenido un impacto muy positivo en sus comunidades, incluida la reducción de la violencia, así como la reducción de la brecha digital.

Razones de vida by Vera Grabe

I looked up this book because I was curious to read the story of one of Colombia’s guerilla groups (The M-19) from their point of view. Vera Grabe‘s story is similar to that of many other guerrilla fighters, they want to believe that their actions will truly change the world, but unlike others, Grabe actually describes the contradictions between the rhetoric and the reality of things. This contradiction led her to eventually giving up the armed struggle and go into politics.

Empecé a leer libro porque tenía curiosidad de leer la historia de uno de los grupos guerrilleros Colombianos (el M-19) desde su punto de vista. La historia de Vera Grabe es parecida a la de muchos otros guerrilleros; muchos quieren creer que sus acciones realmente cambiaran el mundo, pero a diferencia de otros, Grabe en realidad describe las contradicciones entre la discurso político y la realidad de las cosas. Esta contradicción finalmente la llevó a renunciar a la lucha armada para luego meterse a la política.

The Biblioteca Digital Colombiana (Colombia’s Digital Library) is up and running (in beta). This service will allow you to search the OPACs of various educational institutions with one query. Work on this portal started back in 2002, with the collaboration of 13 local universities, with later help from Colciencias, the Ministry of Education, and RENATA.

When conducting a search you’ll find one search box, but you can narrow down results by type of material, or holding institution.

The site also offers links to similar projects in other Latin American countries, as well as documentation on digital libraries in general.

La Biblioteca Digital Colombiana ya funciona, aunque en versión beta. Este servicio le permitirá buscar simultáneamente en los catálogos en línea de una variedad de instituciones educativas. El trabajo hacia este portal se inició en el 2002 con la colaboración de 13 universidades, y más tarde con la ayuda de Colciencias, el Ministerio de Educación y RENATA.

Al realizar una búsqueda encontrará un cuadro de búsqueda, pero puede reducir los resultados por tipo de material, o por institución.

El sitio también ofrece enlaces a proyectos similares en otros países de América Latina, así como documentación sobre las bibliotecas digitales en general.

AMANDO A PABLO. ODIANDO A ESCOBAR by VALLEJO VIRGINIA

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
This is Virginia Vallejo’s version of her relationship with Pablo Escobar, and of Colombia’s history during the late 80′s and early 90′s. As Escobar’s lover she seems to have had a front row seat to some of the biggest events in Colombia’s recent history.

This is a fascinating book in terms of the history she recounts, and the multiple connections she makes between the various drug loads, and between them and many of the country’s most prominent politicians.

As for her relationship with Escobar, let’s just say she’s certainly not someone you want to listen to for relationship advice. She can also come across as being rather full of herself.

All in all, a very good read.

Esta es la versión de Virginia Vallejo, de su relación con Pablo Escobar, y la historia de Colombia durante los últimos años de los 80 y principios de los 90. Como la amante de Escobar, parece haber tenido asiento de primera fila a algunos de los eventos más importantes en la historia reciente de Colombia.

Este es un libro fascinante en términos de la historia que relata, y las múltiples conexiones que hace entre los capos de droga, y entre ellos y muchos de los políticos más eminentes.

En cuanto a su relación con Escobar, digamos que ciertamente no es alguien de quien desee escuchar consejos sobre relaciones personales. A ratos Vallejo también parece bastante engreída.

En general, una muy buena lectura.

Here’s a very interesting photo essay from Wired magazine about the impact of new technologies on a small onion growing town in Colombia. The author and photographer capture a town that still tends the land with the same techniques used for hundreds of years, while simultaneously becoming connected to the outside world through the use of cellphones, computers, video games and movies.

Aquí les comparto un foto-ensayo súper interesante de la revista Wired, sobre como un pequeño pueblo Colombiano se está conectando al mundo por medio de nuevas tecnologías. El autor y fotógrafo captura un pueblo que todavía ara la tierra de la misma manera que se ha hecho por siglos, mientras simultáneamente empieza a usar teléfonos celulares, computadores, juegos de video y películas.

ColombiaYa.com is a search engine for Colombians, by Colombians. The site will provide access to all things Colombian, starting with a crash course of the country’s government and history. You will also find news, culture, sports, government, entertainment, tourism, and so much more. The site also provides contact information for all the Colombian embassies around the world; useful information and documentation for Colombian living abroad; and direct links to all of the Colombian government’s websites, including the presidency, Colciencias, ICETEX, and ministry for education, among many others. The site allows for open discussion about Colombia, allowing users to share articles on any Colombian topic, and providing a space for chat. You’ll also find links to all the mayor radio stations. There is a calendar highlighting all the mayor holidays, including the many, many saints we honor. If you want to advertise an event that will interest the Colombian community, there is a page dedicated to this, although it is currently empty.

The OLPC has reinvented their signature laptop and come out with a new model that looks more like an e-books, is more energy efficient, and will cost only $75. This new model looses the keyboard, but but functions through two touch screens, one of which can function as a keyboard. Another development on this project has been the adoption of Microsoft’s Windows as the machines operating systems. The new laptop will have a dual booting system.

Colombia‘s Caldas region has signed up to offer OX laptops to about 65,000 children. Caldas’ governor Mario Aristizabal expressed the desire to offer children in this region the same advantages offered to children in developed countries around the world. There are plans for Manizales to join the OLPC project as well.
