Jeff Howe has a large following on Twitter  – @crowdsourcing – and is trying to get as many people as possible to read the same book and discuss it. Sounds like a great social experiment. Right now the top choice for the book is Fahrenheit  451.

It’s been almost fifty years since the Peace Corps first started sending volunteers around the world to help in a variety of projects. To commemorate this history and anticipating many new adventures to come, the Peace Corps has created a digital library which encourages current and past volunteers to submit photographs and stories of their experiences abroad. At the very minimum the collection wishes to gather photographs and stories from every country they have sent volunteers to, and every decade.

Over the years I’ve met a lot of Peace Corps volunteers, all with amazing stories; I’ve even the child of a former volunteer, so  I’ll certainly be keeping an eye on this collection.

A Peace Corps Gringo in Colombia

Ya van casi cincuenta años desde que el Cuerpo de Paz comenzó a enviar voluntarios por todo el mundo para ayudar con una variedad de proyectos. Para conmemorar esta historia y proveyendo que habrán muchas aventuras por venir, el Cuerpo de Paz ha creado una biblioteca digital que alienta voluntarios actuales y pasados a presentar fotografías y relatos de sus experiencias en el extranjero. Como mínimo la colección desea recoger fotografías e historias de todos los países donde han enviado voluntarios, y de cada década.

A través de los años he conocido muchos voluntarios del Cuerpo de Paz, todos con increíbles historias, incluso soy hija de un ex-voluntario; sin duda estaré mirando el desarrollo de esta colección.

RedEsColombia is an online platform that offers a space where Colombians around the world, and everyone one else interested in the country can interact, and share ideas. Ultimately the network hopes that these interactions will help bring about new ideas, and development for the country.

You do have to register to get the full benefit of the site. But once you are in you will find dozens of smaller networks divided my topic. There are several regional networks, with Colombian in Canada being quite visible. There are also networks based on common interests, such as education, and business.

The site is a little cumbersome to navigate, but it seems like a good resource for Colombians abroad wanting to keep in touch, and network with other compatriots in the area. It also offers a space for business development both in Colombia as well as abroad.

If you just want to take a look at the types of networks available click on the links on the left hand margin, not the ones of the top because those will ask you to register.

RedEsColombia es una plataforma en línea que ofrece un espacio donde los colombianos alrededor del mundo, y todos los demás interesados en el país pueden interactuar y compartir ideas. En definitiva, la red espera que estas interacciones ayuden a traer nuevas ideas, y el desarrollo para el país.

Usted tiene que registrarse para obtener el beneficio completo del sitio, pero una vez aceda al sitio encontrará decenas de redes más pequeñas divididas por tema. Hay varias redes regionales, con los colombianos en Canadá estando muy visible. Hay también redes basadas en intereses comunes, tales como la educación, y los negocios.

El sitio es un poco difícil de navegar, pero parece un buen recurso para los colombianos en el exterior que desean mantenerse en contacto, y crear contactos otros compatriotas en el área. También hay espacios para el desarrollo de negocios tanto en Colombia como en el extranjero.

Yesterday I got an email announcing the beginning of La Cuña, an online forum dedicated to librarianship for and about Latin American and the Iberian Peninsula. The forum wants to gather Latinoamericanist who wish to exchange information on collection development, reference, instruction or any other issue that may come up.

I hope people from around the world join the forum, the more of us join, the livelier the conversation.

Radical Cataloging: Essays at the Front by K. R. Roberto

The collection of essays in Radical Cataloging cover a wide range of issue in the cataloging world, and it’s not the boring book most non-catalogers might assume it is – but be warned that unless you already understand LCSH, MARC, and the like you probably won’t understand much of what you’ll find here.

La colección de ensayos en “Radical Cataloging” cubren una amplia gama del mundo de la catalogación, y no es el libro aburrido que quienes no catalogan podría asumir que es – pero tenga en cuenta que a menos que ya sepa que es un LCSH, o un NAR, etc probablemente no entenderá mucho de lo que encontrara en este libro.

Here I read essays on Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) and the many ways in which the fall short in describing the collections we catalog. There are essays on LCSH falling short for LGBT issues, music, and art. There’s an essays on Name Authority Records for American Indians, including a comparison on how these names are handled in the USA, Canada, Australian, and New Zealand.

Aquí he leído ensayos sobre la clasificación de la Biblioteca del Congreso (LCSH) y las muchas maneras en que se quedan cortas al querer describir correctamente muchos de los libros en nuestras colecciones. Hay ensayos sobre como LCSH queda corto para los temas gays, lesbicos y de transgenero, la música y el arte. Hay un ensayos sobre registros de autoridad de nombre manejando nombres de los indios americanos, incluyendo una comparación de cómo estos nombres se manejan en los EE.UU., Canadá, Australia y Nueva Zelanda.

I read about UPenn’s project in which they are creating records that use both LCSH and user added tags, and a project at Barnard College which collects and catalogs Zines.

He leído sobre el proyecto UPENN donde se están creando registros que utilizan LCSH y se permite que los usuario añadan más etiquetas, y un proyecto de Barnard College que recoge y catáloga “zines”.

A number of essays criticize the Library of Congress, and OCLC, often with lots of concrete examples to support their case. There are also a few essays that comment on new trends that wish to automate and/or outsource much of the work currently done by technical services departments.

Un número de ensayos critican la Biblioteca del Congreso y a OCLC, a menudo con una gran cantidad de ejemplos concretos. También hay algunos ensayos que comentan sobre las nuevas tendencias que desean automatizar y/o subcontratar gran parte del trabajo que actualmente se realiza por los departamentos de servicios técnicos.

And if you want a good laugh, make sure to read Christopher H. Walker’s essay “Rearranging the Deck of Chairs on the Titanic: A Drowning Cataloger’s Call to Stop Churning the Subject Headings”

La Silla Vacía is an online forum for all things related to contemporary Colombian politics. The site offers qualified commentary on the country’s political activity, and it is updated multiple times throughout the day. The idea is to keep others informed, as well as offering an open space for debate. Under “La Movida del Día” notable people in the country will offer spontaneous reaction to a ongoing events, there are also a number of blogs by journalist from La Silla Vacía, each specializing in a different angle of Colombia’s political scene. The site also gathers reports from national and international news media reporting on the same stories La Silla Vacía is covering, all in aims at giving the reader a larger view of the issues. Users are invited to participate but do have to register with the site in order to do so. The section “La Butaca” focuses on national politics with but with a bit of humor, art, and local flavor; Here I found a great piece remembering Jaime Garzón, 10 years after his murder.

I’ve been “friends” with La Silla Vacía on Facebook since their debut, and it’s been a great way to keep up to date with Colombia’s political sphere.

La Silla Vacía es un foro en línea para todo lo relacionado con la política contemporánea de Colombia. El sitio ofrece comentarios cualificados sobre la actividad política del país que son actualizadas varias veces al día. La idea es mantener informados a los demás, así como ofrecer un espacio abierto para el debate. En “La Movida del Día” personas notables del país ofrecerán reacción espontánea a una serie de eventos en curso, también hay una serie de blogs por periodistas de La Silla Vacía, cada uno especializado en un ángulo diferente de la escena política en Colombia. El sitio también recoge los informes de los medios de comunicación nacionales e internacionales presentando informes sobre las mismas historias que La Silla Vacía está cubriendo, con lo cual quieren ofrecer al lector una visión más amplia de los temas. Los usuarios están invitados a participar, pero tienen que registrarse en el sitio para hacerlo. La sección “La Butaca” se centra en la política nacional pero con un poco de humor, arte, y sabor local, y aquí me encontré con un  estupendo articulo recordando a Jaime Garzón10 años después de su asesinato.

He sido “amiga” de La Silla Vacía en Facebook desde su debut, y ha sido una excelente manera de mantenerme al día con la esfera política de Colombia.

With some financial help from the National Endowment for the Humanities, digital-humanities professor Mary Flanagan is developing a game that will help add tags to some of Dartmouth College’s archival collections. Flanagan expects that students will be interested in the game which presents a player with an image for which they have to create “labels” for, and which will then be compared to the “labels” other players added (I presume in the hopes for increased accuracy). The game is expected to help reduce costs at the library.

The article in the Chronicle of Higher Education did not mention whether the collections involved in this project would only get student added labels or if these would be used alongside LCSH, nor did they mention any librarians, or more importantly, catalogers being involved with the development of this game. The project sounds a little like the PennTags system at UPenn, or the LOC Flickr account.

Flanagan eventually expects to release the game under an Open Source license so others may use it as well.

Con la ayuda financiera de la Fundación Nacional para las Humanidades, la profesora de humanidades digitales Mary Flanagan está desarrollando un juego que ayudará a añadir etiquetas a algunas de las colecciones de archivos de Dartmouth College. Flanagan supone que los estudiantes estarán interesados en el juego, el cual presenta al jugador una imagen para la cual tendrán que crear “etiquetas”, las cuales luego serán comparados con las “etiquetas” que otros jugadores han añadido (supongo que con la esperanza de aumentar su exactitud). Se espera que el juego ayude a reducir costos en la biblioteca.

El artículo del Chronicle of Higher Education no mencionó si las colecciones que participan en este proyecto sólo recibirán las etiquetas añadidas por estudiantes o si además utilizarán puntos de acceso de la Biblioteca del Congreso (LCSH), ni se menciona la participación de algún bibliotecarios, o más importante aún, la participación de catalogadores profesionales en el desarrollo del juego. El proyecto suena un poco como el sistema de PennTags en UPenn, o la cuenta de Flickr de la LOC.

Flanagan espera lanzar el juego bajo una licencia de código abierto para que otros también puedan usarlo.

Wiki Acceso Abierto is an initiative that was born out of the listserve Lista Latinoamericana sobre Acceso Abierto y Repositorios, and works with support from the Universidad Nacional de Rosario. The wiki’s aim is to bring together information on Open Access projects from the Spanish Speaking world.

Right now the wiki is very much in the development stage, but from the proposed categories it seems like they will eventually cover all the important topics.

Participation is encouraged, and will obviously make this a better resource for all of us. So if you have a project to add, please join the wiki.

Wiki Acceso Abierto es una iniciativa que nació de la Lista Latinoamericana sobre Acceso Abierto y Repositorios, y trabaja con el apoyo de la Universidad Nacional de Rosario. El objetivo del wiki es reunir información sobre proyectos de Acceso Abierto alrededor del mundo hispanohablante.

Ahora el wiki está en la etapa de desarrollo, pero según las categorías propuestas parece que eventualmente cubrirán todos los temas importantes.

Have a challenging question no one seems to have an answer for? Try Project Wombat, a discussion list for difficult reference questions.

The project has three different versions, with the only difference being the level of moderation. You can look though their archives to get a sense of what others ask, and how their questions were answered. Some of the questions are on the serious side, such as where to  find a congress person’s voting record. Others are on lighter topics, such as finding a specific M*A*S*H* episode online.

Just be aware that once you submit a question you have just agreed to make whatever information you provided public, and no one will go into the archived to edit anything out.

If you are an information professional you might want to sign up and contribute some of your knowledge and expertise. If you are looking for answers, look no more!
