Today I went to visit a couple of the libraries that make up the BiblioRed in Bogota. BiblioRed is Bogota’s public library systems, and it’s composed of a number of large, and small libraries, as well as a bibliobus. Today I went to visit the Biblioteca Pública Parque El Tunal, and the Biblioteca Pública Virgilio Barco, both of which are considered “bibliotecas mayores” within the systems (here is a organization map of the library systems).

As any other public library system BiblioRed offeres library services to the general public, but they also have specialized programs to reach hospitals, prisons, evacuation centers, and health centers. BiblioRed as an idea was conceived back in 1998, opening the doors to three mayor libraries in 2001; In 2008 they implemented the bibliobus (mobile library). Since the city implemented these public libraries they have been gathering awards and positive recognition, both locally and from abroad.

While I visited La biblioteca Parque El Tunal, I saw a number of facilities to help bring the community into the library; there is state of the art computer lad designed to assist patrons who deaf and/or blind; the library has a large auditorium that seats 230, and several training rooms which can be reserved by patrons; and there is a large children room with a collection that holds material in Spanish, English, and Braille. This room was full of kids when I was there. At the Virgilio Barco I ran into an awesome Salsa concert in full swing, a very moving photograph exhibit showing the effects of land mines in Colombia, and I happened upon the screening of short films about Bogota. Although I wasn’t able to visit the other major libraries in the system, it seems like they all have wonderful events going on all the time.

As a network, the library systems offers a number of online resources, including access to several mayor databases, recommendations for useful websites, and virtual reference services. All of these services are free, but to check items out, patrons must become “members” of the library, but at 5,000 Colombian pesos (about $2.50 dollars) I say it’s a great deal!

Hoy fui a visitar algunas de las bibliotecas que conforman la Bibliored en Bogotá. Bibliored es el sistemas de bibliotecas públicas de Bogotá, que están adscritas a la secretaria  de educación y está compuesto de una serie de bibliotecas mayores, otras pequeñas, así como un bibliobús. Hoy visite la Biblioteca Pública Parque El Tunal y la Biblioteca Pública Virgilio Barco, las cuales son considerados como “bibliotecas mayores” dentro del sistemas (aqui hay un mapa de la organización del sistemas bibliotecario).

Como cualquier otro sistema de bibliotecas públicas Bibliored ofrece servicios de biblioteca para el público en general pero también tienen programas especializados para llegar a hospitales, cárceles, centros de evacuación y centros de salud. BiblioRed como idea fue concebida en 1998, abriendo las puertas de tres bibliotecas mayores en 2001; En 2008 se implementó el bibliobús (biblioteca móvil). Desde que empezó a funcionar este sistema de bibliotecas públicas estas han ido acumulando premios y reconocimiento a nivel nacional e internacional.

Mientras estuve en La biblioteca Parque El Tunal vi una serie de instalaciones para ayudar a atraer a la comunidad a la biblioteca. Tienen un salón con la ultima tecnología diseñado para ayudar a usuarios sordos y ciegos, la biblioteca cuenta con un gran auditorio para 230 personas, varios cubiculos de estudio que pueden ser reservados por los usuarios, y hay una sala grande para niños con una colección que contiene materiales en Español, inglés, y braille. Esta habitación estaba llena de niños, cuando mientras visitaba la biblioteca. En la Virgilio Barco me encontré con un impresionante concierto de salsa en pleno apogeo, una exposición de fotografía muy conmovedora que muestra los efectos de las minas terrestres en Colombia, y me encontré con la proyección de cortometrajes sobre Bogotá. Aunque no pude visitar las demás bibliotecas del sistema parece que todas tienen eventos maravillosos para todo el mundo.

Como red, le sistemas de biblioteca ofrece una serie de recursos en línea, incluyendo el acceso a bases de datos, varias recomendaciones para los sitios web útiles, y servicios de referencia virtual. Todos estos servicios son gratuitos, pero para retirar material para llevarlo a casa los usuarios deben convertirse en “miembros” de la biblioteca, adquiriendo un carné de afiliado ¡pero por un costo de 5.000 pesos colombianos (alrededor de $ 2.50 dólares) esto es una ganga!

Travesía is a website put together by Spain’s Ministry of Culture’s General Subcommittee on the Coordination of Libraries. Basically the sites aims at promoting collaboration among Spanish librarians, and offers them a space to work together.

Information on the site is divided into three main categories; 1) Documentation that will aid collaboration among Spanish Librarians; 2) Publications by the Spain’s Ministry of Culture’s General Subcommittee on the Coordination of Libraries; and 3) Offers access to other relevant publications.

The site functions in all the official languages used in Spanish, plus English.

Travesía es un sitio web elaborado por la Subdirección General de Coordinación Bibliotecaria del Ministerio de Cultura de España. Básicamente el sitios tiene como objetivo promover la colaboración entre bibliotecarios en españa y les ofrece un espacio para trabajar juntos.

Información en el sitio se divide en tres categorías principales: 1) Documentación que ayudará a la colaboración entre los bibliotecarios españoles, 2) Publicaciones de la Subdirección General de Coordinación Bibliotecaria del Ministerio de Cultura de España, y 3) Ofrece acceso a otras publicaciones pertinentes.

El sitio funciona en todos los idiomas oficiales que se usan en españa, y en inglés.

My friend Lena always says she wished she had taken advantage of my fluency in Spanish to learn the language while we were roommates, since as a doctor in the USA she is constantly running into patience who have a hard time explaining their medical needs in English. Well I may not be in the same city any longer, but I just found a great resource that can help her all the same.

Medical Spanish Podcasts offers a great selection of audio files covering a variety of medical topics, and general vocabulary that will be useful in the field. Each topic offers several sections for easy reviewing and which become increasingly more advanced. Some of the topics covered recently include intestinal worms, STDs, body parts, and Swine Flu.

You can find a list of recent podcasts here, and you can follow them through RSS. From the list you can either listed to the podcasts right away, or click on the title of the podcasts to get a list of vocabulary associated with the topic. Each entry offers several key phrases on the topic and then gives you a couple short skits illustrating how these phrases could come up.

The woman who does the Spanish version of these podcast has a weird accent; I presume she is not a native Spanish speaker, but none the less her Spanish grammar is correct. All in all a good resource, although I hope medical professionals will not assume that learning a few phrases of Spanish will replace a professional translator.

Mi amiga Lena siempre dice que ojala hubiese aprovechado mi dominio del español para aprender el idioma mientras fuimos compañeros de casa, ya que como doctora en los EEUU constantemente encuentra pacientes que tienen dificultad al explicar sus necesidades médicas en Inglés. Puede ser que ya no viva en la misma ciudad, pero he encontrado un gran recurso que de todos modos le puede ayudar.

Spanish Medical Podcasts ofrece una gran selección de archivos de audio que cubren una variedad de temas médicos, y el vocabulario general que será útil en el campo. Cada tema ofrece varias secciones para facilitar la revisión y que se vuelven cada vez más avanzados. Algunos de los temas abordados recientemente son los gusanos intestinales, enfermedades de transmisión sexual, partes del cuerpo, y la gripe porcina.

Usted puede encontrar una lista de podcasts reciente aquí, y los podrá seguir a través de un RSS. Desde la lista podrá escuchar los podcasts de inmediato, o hacer clic sobre el título para obtener una lista de vocabulario relacionado con el tema. Cada entrada ofrece varias frases clave sobre el tema y luego le da un par de escenarios cortos que ilustran cómo estas frases pueden surgir.

La mujer que narra la parte en español de estos podcast tiene un acento raro, supongo que no es alguien quien se haya criado hablando español, sin embargo, su gramática en español es correcta. En conjunto es un buen recurso, aunque espero que los profesionales médicos no asuman que el aprendizaje de algunas frases en español podrán sustituir a un traductor profesional.

Mi Vida Loca is a web based tutorial created by the BBC to help you learn Spanish. The lessons consist mainly of videos that will teach you key phrases for specific situations. The videos include a local host who takes the viewer out. During the duration of the video can turn the subtitles, in English and Spanish, on or off. At various points in the scene you are expected to make decisions, and say out loud the correct phrase. The video will wait until you make your choice.

Mi Vida Loca is great little tutorial, and while it won’t make you completely fluent in Spanish, it can teach you many key phrases you can use while traveling. Keep in mind that the scenes and expressions are very Spanish, as opposed to Latin American.

The BBC offers similar tutorials for French, German, Italian, Greek, Portuguese, Chinese, and many more languages.

Mi Vida Loca es un tutorial basado en la web creado por la BBC para ayudarle a aprender español. Las lecciones consisten principalmente en videos que te enseñará frases clave para situaciones específicas. Los videos incluyendo un anfitrión local que saca al espectador a conocer la ciudad. Durante la duración del vídeo se puede activar subtítulos en Inglés y Español. En varios puntos de la escena que se espera para tomar decisiones, y decir en voz alta la frase correcta. El vídeo se espere hasta que haga su elección.

El tutorial de Mi Vida Loca es realmente bueno y aunque no lo hará completamente fluido en español, si puede enseñar muchas frases clave que podrá utilizar mientras viaja. Tenga en cuenta que las escenas y expresiones son muy español, a diferencia de latinoamericanas.

La BBC ofrece tutoriales similares para aprender francés, alemán, italiano, griego, portugués, chino, y muchos idiomas más.

I just received an email with a call for simultaneous interpreters – English/Arabic to translate at IFLA‘s annual conference, which will take place in Gothenburg, Sweden, August 10 – 15, 2010. The title for the upcoming conference is “Open access to knowledge – promoting sustainable progress.”

Here is the description for the position.

As the IFLA Center for Arabic Speaking Libraries at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, we are seeking simultaneous interpreters from all over the Arab world to work together on enhancing the Arab intellectual community and serve our delegates at the IFLA Conference in Gothenburg. The work entails simultaneous translation of some of the conference sessions.

Accepted applicants will be granted the following:
- Free travel to and from Gothenburg (Economy class)
- Visa fees
- Free Accommodation in one of the best hotels at a walking distance area from the Conference Convention Center – Bed only
- 40.00 Euro daily per-diem
- Free registration for the conference

Please note that no other fees will be paid for doing the translation work.

The following qualifications are required for application:
- B.A. or B.S. degree
- No less than 5 year experience in the library and information science profession
- Excellent command of the English and the Arabic languages

IFLA has just launched “Sister Libraries for Children’s and Young Adult’s Reading,” a new project to bring together libraries and librarians focused on children and young adults in order to share ideas, experiences, collaborate and develop joint programs.

The project is open to a variety of participants, including public libraries, school libraries, and organizations working with libraries. There is no obligation to be a member of IFLA to participate.

These partnerships usually develop as each partnership wishes them to. There are no mandatory guidelines to follow, and no obligations to meet. Each library contributes and participates as they see best.

The European Library portal can help you search the online catalogs to all the major libraries in the European Union. The project originates from the TEL-project which was set up as a cooperative framework that would facilitate access to all the major national and deposit collection from Europe’s national libraries. The European Library is financed by the Conference of European National Librarians (CENL).

The site offers users a variety of options when searching material. You can search as you would in any other OPAC, you can browse by country, or by library. The site also functions in about two dozen languages, although this does not mean the results will be in the language of your choice. This is because The European Library only serves as en intermediate to the variety of libraries that compose it, so the results you see are in the catalog for the library which own is. This means that to get the full experience with all these wonderful collections you would have to read many of the major European languages. Still, there are plenty of collections in English, and even if you can’t read all the instructions, I’m sure you can click away and find some interesting material. You can also try asking for help to find a specific item.

Take a look, there is an amazing array of collections on almost every topic to enjoy, including posters, journals, music, poetry, photography, atlases, cartoons, portraits, and more.

The MLA created a database that maps out languages in the USA with information originating from the 2000 census. The site allows you to “build” maps according to language and which reflect information of the entire country, or each individual state. You can chart out information on these maps by percentages, counties, or zip code divisions. The site also allows you to compare the prominence of two languages to each other.

El MLA ha creado una base de datos que traza el uso de varios idiomas en los EE.UU. con la información proveniente del censo del 2000. El sitio le permite “construir” mapas de acuerdo al idioma y que reflejan la información de todo el país, o cada estado. Se puede trazar la información sobre estos mapas en porcentajes, condados o divisiones de código postal. El sitio también permite comparar la importancia entre lenguas.

On a separate part of this site you can also look up information by city, zip code, year. By looking here I can see that in Boston only 66.69% of the population are monolingual English speakers, while 33.30% speak a language other than English.

Here are a few free online services that can spell check your documents.

I tried a couple of these and I like Jspell spell checker, and Orangoo the best. Using it requires simple cutting and pasting of the text, and best of all, both can spell check in multiple languages! Orangoo has the added benefit of being able to translate entire web pages.

Aquí hay algunos servicios en línea gratuitos que puede corregir la ortografía de sus documentos.

He intentado un par de ellos y me parece que Jspell, y Orangoo son los mejores. Usar el corrector es bastante sencillo, es solo cuestión de cortar y pegar el texto, y lo mejor de todo, ambos pueden revisar la ortografía en varios idiomas! Orangoo  además tiene la ventaja añadida de ser capaz de corregir el texto de páginas web.
