The National Library of Portugal is currently offering a few research fellowships in collaboration with the Fundação Luso-Americana para o Desenvolvimento. The fellowships are expected to support short term research (one or two months) and will help cover expenses related to travel and living costs.

The Foreign, Comparative and International Law Special Interest Section (FCIL-SIS) of the American Association of Law Libraries is now accepting applications for the 2011 FCIL Schaffer Grant for Foreign Law Librarians.

The FCIL Schaffer Grant for the AALL Annual Meeting in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (July 23-26, 2011), provides a waiver of the AALL Annual Meeting full registration fee and a grant of a minimum $2,000 to assist with accommodations and travel costs.

Applicants must be law librarians or other professionals working in the legal information field, currently employed in countries other than the United States, and with significant responsibility for the organization, preservation, or provision of legal information.  The application deadline is March 1, 2011.  The Grant Committee will not consider late or incomplete applications.

I just received an email from Thabo Jakavula who shared this great site called RueFind. The site is a Google map that gathers images and information about interesting sites around the world. The map is covered in small images which you can click on to see a little more information about the site.

El sitio es un mapa de Google que recoge imágenes e información sobre sitios de interés en todo el mundo. El mapa está cubierto de pequeñas imágenes sobre las que puedes hacer clic para ver un poco más de información sobre el sitio.

Starting from the homepage you can also browse through the more popular cities, and see what attractions each one offers. On the right hand side you will also find other categories to browse through such as museums, lighthouses, castles, etc. A search for libraries only yielded one result.

A partir de la página principal también se puede navegar a través de las ciudades más populares y ver lo que cada una ofrece en atracciones. Al lado derecho también encontrará otras categorías tales como museos, faros, castillos, etc. Una búsqueda de bibliotecas sólo se dio un resultado.

I really like how visual this site is and the photographs are beautiful, although I do think the descriptions of the places are a bit short. Maybe a link out to the wikipedia entry for each site would help. The coverage also heavily focuses on North American and Western Europe, with little information for the rest of the world. Still, it’s a great site, and worth visiting.

A mi me gusta que este sitio es tan visual y las fotos son hermosas, aunque yo creo que las descripciones de los lugares son un poco cortas. Tal vez un enlace a la entrada de Wikipedia para cada sitio ayudaría. La cobertura se enfoca en gran medida en América del Norte y Europa Occidental, con poca información sobre el resto del mundo. I just discovered this cool site that help you find newspapers across the globe! Newspaper Map is very easy to use, and color coordinated to make things easy to find. The different colors of the pins represent the language of the original newspaper, and the site allows you to navigate in English, German, or Japanese.

Acabo de descubrir este excelente sitio que le ayudará a encontrar periódicos de todo el mundo! Newspaper Map es muy fácil de usar y esta coordinado por para facilitar la búsqueda. Los diferentes colores de los alfileres representan el idioma original del diario y el sitio le permite navegar en Inglés, alemán o japonés.

You can begin looking for newspapers by clicking on the pins across the map. Each pin will give you the name of the newspaper, and will offer you the option of reading the site in multiple languages. And in order to get a closer look at the pins, you can zoom in on a specific region. You can also use the search box to look for specific titles, or search by address.

Puede comenzar a ojear los periódicos haciendo clic en los alfileres a través del mapa. Cada alfiler le dará el nombre del periódico y le ofrecerá la opción de leer el sitio en varios idiomas. As I browse the site I’m finding newspapers I’ve never heard of, but I also don’t see other newspapers I do know of. The site is still in beta, so hopefully more and more newspapers will be added over time.

SALALM stands for the Seminar on the Acquisition of Latin American Library Materials and every year we gather for an amazing conference dealing with all things related to libraries and Latin America. During past conferences I’ve learned about digital collections dealing with the Cuban Rafters phenomenon and protest murals in Chile, and work to change Library of Congress Classification treating coca plants for traditional uses. I’ve also met some amazing librarians and book vendors from across the world.

El SALALM es el Seminario de Adquisiciones de Materiales Latinoamericanos para Bibliotecas y cada año nos reunimos para una conferencia increíble tratando todo lo relacionado con bibliotecas y América Latina. En conferencias anteriores he aprendido acerca de colecciones digitales que tratan con el fenómeno de los balseros cubanos y murales de protesta en Chile, y acerca del trabajo para cambiar la Clasificación de la Biblioteca del Congreso en cuanto al trato de planta de coca para usos tradicionales. También he conocido bibliotecarios y vendedores de libros increíble de todo el mundo.

Every year SALALM offers assistance for a few librarians in Latin American to assist the conference through a scholarship known as ENLACE. This years conference will be held in Philadelphia, May 28 – June 1, 2011. The Satellite Sentinel Project hopes to deter the resumption of war between North and South Sudan. The project provides documentation with the hope that exposing the country’s situation will prevent further violence and human right abuse. The idea behind the project is to engage the rest of the world in Sudan’s situation, and to provide evidence so that no one will be able to plead ignorance to the country’s situation.

El proyecto Satellite Sentinel espera prevenir la reanudación de la guerra entre el norte y el sur de Sudán. El proyecto proporciona documentación con la esperanza de que la denuncia de la situación del país evite más violencia y el abuso de los derechos humanos. La idea detrás del proyecto es involucrar al resto del mundo en la situación de Sudán, y aportar pruebas para que nadie podrá alegar ignorancia sobre la situación del país.

The project works by using Google’s Map Maker technology in cooperation with commercial satellites to capture images of possible threats to civilians, track displaced communities, detect explosions, and other indicators of violence.

El proyecto funciona mediante el uso de la tecnología de Google Map Maker en cooperación con satélites comerciales para captar imágenes de posibles amenazas a civiles, seguir a las comunidades desplazadas, detectar explosiones, y otros indicadores de la violencia.

This Sunday, January 9th, 2011, Sudan will be voting on a referendum to decide on a secession referendum, and the Satellite Sentinel Projects will be watching closely to document the process. People working on this project will pair up satellite imagery with reports from people on the ground to contextually the images. Beyond this weekend, the project aims to be engaged in Sudan for the long run, and continue monitoring the situation.

Este Domingo, 09 de enero 2011, Sudán votara en un referéndum de secesión, y el proyectos de satélites Sentinel estará observando de cerca para documentar el proceso. Las personas que trabajan en este proyecto asociará las imágenes de los satélite con los informes de la gente reportando desde Sudan para darle contexto las imágenes. Más allá de este fin de semana, el proyecto aspira a seguir involucrado en Sudán a largo plazo, y así seguir de cerca la situación.

This project is a collaboration between Not On Our Watch, Google, the Enough Project, the United Nations UNITAR Operational Satellite Applications Programme (UNOSAT), the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative, and Trellon, LLC.

Este proyecto es una colaboración entre Not On Our Watch, Google, el Enough Project, las United Nations UNITAR Operational Satellite Applications Programme (UNOSAT), la Iniciativa de Humanitaria de Harvard y Trellon, LLC.

UNOSAT leads the collection and analysis of the images and collaborates with Google and Trellon to design the web platform for the public to easily access the images and reports. Harvard Humanitarian Initiative provides system-wide research and leads the collection, human rights analysis, and corroboration of on-the-ground reports that contextualizes the satellite imagery. The Enough Project contributes field reports, provides policy analysis, and, together with Not On Our Watch, puts pressure on policymakers by urging the public to act.

UNOSAT recoge y análisis las imágenes y colabora con Google yTrellon para diseñar la plataforma web para que el público pueda acceder fácilmente las imágenes e información. La Iniciativa Humanitaria Harvard proporciona la investigación de todo el sistema y lleva la recopilación de información, el análisis de la situación sobre derechos humanos, y la corroboración de los informes para así contextualiza las imágenes de satélite. El proyecto Enough contribuye informes de campo, proporciona el análisis político, y, junto con Not On Our Watch, ejerce presión sobre los políticos, instando al público a actuar.

Mexico has recently release the Biblioteca Digital Mexicana, a great digital collection giving us access to documents dating back to Mexico’s precolonial history, independence and revolutionary period. The site offers excellent digital scans of codices, including some information on the physical item, and some historical context.

México acaba de anunciar la Biblioteca Digital Mexicana, una gran colección digital que nos da acceso a documentos que datan de la historia pre-colonial de México, su independencia y el período revolucionario. El sitio ofrece un excelente imágenes digital de los códices incluyendo información sobre el articulo físico y un poco de contexto histórico.

This project was created through the work of four Mexican cultural institutions; Archivo General de la Nación, La Biblioteca Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH),  el Centro de Estudios de Historia de México CEHM- Carso, y el Consejo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes. These institutions have previously shared some of their holdings through the World Digital Library.

Este proyecto fue creado a través del trabajo de cuatro instituciones culturales de México; Archivo General de la Nación, la Biblioteca Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH), El Centro de Estudios de Historia de México CEHM-Carso, y El Consejo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes. Estas instituciones han compartido previamente algunos de sus documentos a través de la Biblioteca Digital Mundial.

This project takes off with a handful of items, but I assume more will be added over time.

The Biblioteca Jurídica Virtual is a project created by UNAM which aims to make legal material available to everyone. This virtual library of legal material began by uploading digital files of a number of items from the UNAM’s library collection, and other the years has grown to include the participation of many other legal collections, both in Mexico, as well as abroad. In the long run this project hopes to offer many of the services you could find at a regular library, including reference assistant from a librarian, and ILL. Currently the collection is growing at the rate of one book a day.

La Biblioteca Jurídica Virtual es un proyecto creado por la UNAM que tiene como objetivo poner al alcance de todos una cantidad de material legal. Esta biblioteca virtual se inició al empezar a subir archivos digitales de la colección de la biblioteca de la UNAM, y a través de los años ha crecido para incluir la participación de muchas otras colecciones legales, tanto en México como en el extranjero. A largo plazo este proyecto pretende ofrecer muchos de los servicios que usted podría encontrar en una biblioteca regular, incluyendo asistencia de referencia de un bibliotecario, y el préstamo interbibliotecario. Actualmente la colección está creciendo al agregar un libro por día.

Here are parts one, two, and three of a news report highlighting the impressive change the city of Medellín, Colombia has had in the last decade or so, and how Juárez, Mexico is trying to model itself after it.

Aquí están capítulos uno, dos y tres de un informe de noticias destacado el impresionante cambio que la ciudad de Medellín, Colombia ha tenido en la última década y como Juárez, México está tratando de modelar estos cambios.

During the 90s Medellín has known the world over for its violence, but today it’s an entirely different place, and much of this new-found peace and prosperity can be linked to the massive investment the city made in public libraries, and other social programs. Medellín created a system of public libraries and strategically located them in some of the poorest, and most violent neighborhoods. One of these new libraries, the Parque Biblioteca León de Greiff, lives in a building which used to he a jail. What beautiful symbolism, from prison to place of learning. In each neighborhood these libraries have become places to learn, build community, and socialize.

Durante los años 90 Medellín era famosa alrededor del mundo mundo por su violencia, pero hoy es un lugar totalmente diferente y gran parte de esta nueva paz y prosperidad son resultados directos de la gran inversión que la ciudad hizo en bibliotecas públicas y otros programas sociales. Medellín creó un sistema de bibliotecas públicas ubicadas estratégicamente en algunos de los barrios más pobres y violentos. Una de estas nuevas bibliotecas es el Parque Biblioteca León de Greiff, ubicada en un edificio que antes que antes era cárcel. Que hermoso simbolismo, de cárcel a lugar de conocimiento. En cada barrio de estas bibliotecas se han convertido en lugares para aprender, construir comunidad, y socializar.

A few months ago a library student in Colombian asked me about exchange programs in the field, so I’m sharing some of the resources I found while helping him out. And obviously “abroad” is defined by where we start out, so I’ve gathered resources both for coming to the USA as well as for going to other countries around the world.

Hace unos meses un estudiante de bibliotecologia en Colombia me preguntó sobre programas de intercambio en el campo de las bibliotecas así que estoy compartiendo algunos de los recursos que encontré mientras le ayudaba. Y obviamente “en el extranjero” se define en relación con donde estamos, así es que reúno recursos tanto para venir a los EE.UU., así como para ir a otros países alrededor del mundo.

If you are interesting in an exchange program to work or study abroad in the field of library sciences there are a number of options;

Si usted esta interesado en un programa de intercambio para trabajar o estudiar en el extranjero en el campo de las bibliotecas y la ciencias de la información hay un número de opciones;

Fulbright: This is one of the more prestigious awards anyone can get, and a great opportunity to explore another country first hand. From the Fulbright website it seems their library program is quite vibrant, and some of their more recent participants have worked in countries such as Taiwan, Germany, China, Egypt, and Honduras. And remember that the Fulbright also offers people the opportunity to study in the USA. And just for a taste of what you might do with a Fulbright scholarship in the library field, read the story of Heather Lea Moulaison who used her scholarship to work in Morocco. Librarian-in-Residence: Becoming a librarian-in-residence is a great way to acquire some extra experience in the field, live abroad, and enhance your resume. Each library will have different rules for these type of positions so make sure each party’s expectations are clear before taking this type of job. Below are a few libraries that have ongoing opportunities for a librarian-in-residence;

Book Fairs: There are book fairs all over the world and at different times of the year. These might be a good option for a short trip abroad, and to learn more about collection development and the book industry. Many of these book fairs also offer full or partial financial aid to people who qualify. Below are are a few book fairs that offer financial aid.

Ferias del Libro: Hay ferias del libro en todo el mundo y en diferentes épocas del año. Estas pueden ser una buena opción para un corto viaje al extranjero y para aprender más sobre el desarrollo de colecciones y la industria del libro. Muchas de estas ferias del libro también ofrece ayuda económica (total o parcial) a las personas reúnen los requisitos necesarios. • WESS Coutts Nijhoff International West European Specialist Study Grant; This supports research pertaining to Western European studies, librarianship, or the book trade. / Esta beca apoya la investigación en estudios europeos occidentales, bibliotecología, o el comercio de libros.

And while going abroad on a pre-established program might be more convenient, you can also set up your own exchange program, just make sure you are given full authorization from your local university or workplace, and you leave everything clearly outlined in writing. It would be best to write up a contract explaining what you will be doing abroad, at which institution, what you plan to get out of the program, how this will benefit your local institution, and when you plan to be back.

Y mientras ir al extranjero con un programa pre-establecido puede ser más conveniente, también puede armar su propio programa de intercambio, sólo asegúrese obtener plena autorización de su universidad o lugar de trabajo, y deje todo explicado claramente y por escrito. Lo mejor sería redactar un contrato que explique a que va a ir al extranjero, en que institución estará, lo que va a sacar del intercambio, cómo esta experiencia va a beneficiar a su institución local, y cuando espera estar de regreso.

If you choose this route, you will have to do your own research and find out what educational institutions offer the courses or experience you are looking for, if they welcome international students, and how much this will cost. If you want to work abroad you will need to reach out to your professional network and explore options this way. You may also want to check the ALA / IRRT Sister Library Initiative wiki. This wiki is designed to facilitate relationships between libraries, but you can use it to learn more about libraries who are already open to the idea of sharing resources and knowledge across borders.
