I just saw this on a friend’s Facebook page and it looks awesome! This new app will allow librarians to quickly and correctly shelf read entire shelves. The app uses the phone’s camera function to read call numbers and shows you which books are out of place, and can then tell you in what direction you need to move them. Additionally the app can help generate lists of the books that it was seen, thus doing your inventory!

Acabo de ver esto en la página de una amiga de Facebook y me parece genial! Esta nueva aplicación nos permitirá a los bibliotecarios leer rápidamente y de forma correcta estantes enteros de la biblioteca. La aplicación utiliza la función de la cámara del teléfono para leer los números en el dorso del libro y le muestra que libros están fuera de lugar. También le puede decir en qué dirección tiene que moverlos. Además la aplicación puede ayudarle a generar listas de los libros que vio y por tanto le ayudara a hacer inventario!

At the end of the month the Yale Law Library will run a three day pilot program allowing students to check out a therapy dog for 30 minutes at a time! The project is a creative way to try and address student stress while they are studying, and students seems excited about the project.

A finales del mes de la Biblioteca  Jurídica de Yale se ejecutará un programa piloto de tres días que le permite a los estudiantes a prestar por periodos de 30 minutos un perro de terapia!  El proyecto es una manera creativa para tratar de abordar el estrés de los estudiantes mientras estudian, y estos parecen entusiasmados con el proyecto.

If all goes well, and the dog is doing well, maybe they can get some cats for the library next!

Si todo va bien y al perro le va bien, ¡de pronto puedan conseguir un par de gatos para la biblioteca!

Navegador Jurídico Internacion (International Legal Browser) is a web site created by the Institute for Legal Researchof UNAM offering all sorts of legal resources on Mexico and the rest of the world. On the index page you will find links to Mexico’s current constitution, and previous versions. You’ll also find a brief description of how the governmental is organized and links to each agency. Some of the links you’ll find will refer you to informacion about the presidency, embassies and consulates, the senate, and the supreme court, among others.

El sitio igualmente ofrece un resume de  mas o menos la misma información de muchos otros paises, haciendo énfasis en los países del continente americano, el caribe, y Europa. También hay una pagina que ofrece legislacion de los paises en las americas y el caribe. The site also offers a summary of  more or less the same information for many other countries, focusing on countries in the Americas, the Caribbean, and Europe. There is also a page that offers legislation of the countries in the Americas and the Caribbean. In addition the site offers links to several international organizationsrelated to  the legal field, such as Amnesty International, the OAS and the International Committee of the Red Cross, among others.

The National Library of Portugal is currently offering a few research fellowships in collaboration with the Fundação Luso-Americana para o Desenvolvimento. The fellowships are expected to support short term research (one or two months) and will help cover expenses related to travel and living costs.

La Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal en colaboración con la Fundação Luso-Americana para o Desenvolvimento actualmente esta ofreciendo un par de becas de investigación. “The Language of Conservation” is a program that hopes to promote awareness of the environment through poetry installations in zoos, and participating public libraries (New Orleans, Milwaukee, Little Rock, Jacksonville, and Chicago). Each city will have a poet in residence who will get the chance to interact with the zoo animals, wildlife biologists and exhibit designers to create exhibits which will highlight poetry that celebrated nature and the connections between species.

“El lenguaje de la Conservación” es un programa que pretende promover el conocimiento del medio ambiente mediante instalaciones de poesía en parques zoológicos y varias bibliotecas públicas que participan en el proyecto (Nueva Orleans, Milwaukee, Little Rock, Jacksonville, y Chicago). Cada ciudad tendrá un poeta en residencia que tendrá la oportunidad de interactuar con los animales del zoológico, biólogos y diseñadores de las exhibiciones para crear exhibiciones que destacan poesía que celebra la naturaleza y las conexiones entre las especies.

The program is a collaboration between the ALA Public Program Office and Poets House, a national poetry library and literary center.

El programa es una colaboración entre la Public Program Office de la ALA y Casa de los Poetas, una biblioteca de poesía nacional y centro literario.

What a lovely idea, and lucky poets who get to hang out at the zoo!

The Foreign, Comparative and International Law Special Interest Section (FCIL-SIS) of the American Association of Law Libraries is now accepting applications for the 2011 FCIL Schaffer Grant for Foreign Law Librarians.

The FCIL Schaffer Grant for the AALL Annual Meeting in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (July 23-26, 2011), provides a waiver of the AALL Annual Meeting full registration fee and a grant of a minimum $2,000 to assist with accommodations and travel costs.

Applicants must be law librarians or other professionals working in the legal information field, currently employed in countries other than the United States, and with significant responsibility for the organization, preservation, or provision of legal information.  The application deadline is March 1, 2011.  The Grant Committee will not consider late or incomplete applications.

SALALM stands for the Seminar on the Acquisition of Latin American Library Materials and every year we gather for an amazing conference dealing with all things related to libraries and Latin America. During past conferences I’ve learned about digital collections dealing with the Cuban Rafters phenomenon and protest murals in Chile, and work to change Library of Congress Classification treating coca plants for traditional uses. I’ve also met some amazing librarians and book vendors from across the world.

El SALALM es el Seminario de Adquisiciones de Materiales Latinoamericanos para Bibliotecas y cada año nos reunimos para una conferencia increíble tratando todo lo relacionado con bibliotecas y América Latina. En conferencias anteriores he aprendido acerca de colecciones digitales que tratan con el fenómeno de los balseros cubanos y murales de protesta en Chile, y acerca del trabajo para cambiar la Clasificación de la Biblioteca del Congreso en cuanto al trato de planta de coca para usos tradicionales. También he conocido bibliotecarios y vendedores de libros increíble de todo el mundo.

Every year SALALM offers assistance for a few librarians in Latin American to assist the conference through a scholarship known as ENLACE. This years conference will be held in Philadelphia, May 28 – June 1, 2011. Last night I received an email from Julia Watson with the Online Education Database and she shared this list of the 10 Most Impressive Elementary School Libraries in the U.S. The list caught my attention because of the amazing stories included here. On this list you will find stories about school libraries involved in staging Shakespeare plays, and another that produces its own energy! In general they are encouraging stories of libraries who are embracing new technologies, and helping form young minds.

Anoche recibí un correo electrónico de Julia Watson quien trabaja con Online Education Database (la Base de Datos en Línea de Educación) y me mando esta lista de las 10 Bibliotecas de Escuela Primaria más Impresionantes en los EE.UU. La lista me llamó la atención por las increíbles historias que incluye. En esta lista encontrarás historias sobre bibliotecas escolares que organizan las obras de Shakespeare, ¡y otras que produce su propia energía! This afternoon I attended an ALA webinar about E-Government. The session offered some good sites where we can find government information (local, state, and federal), shared some information about patron use of these resources, and offered some statistical information on the subject.

Esta tarde asistí a un seminario web de ALA sobre E-Gobierno. La sesión ofreció información sobre algunos sitios buenos donde podemos encontrar información gubernamental (a nivel local, estatal y federal), algo de información sobre los usuarios de estos recursos, y algunas estadísticas sobre el tema.

The first panelist was Nancy Fedrericks, e-government librarian, Pasco County Public Library (Florida). Fedrericks shared some resources found at her local library, including a section on their website, a blog, and some online tools to help patrons use these resources. She talked about the use these resources get at her library, and mentioned that it is best to be very careful about privacy issues when helping patrons with these resources, and when at all possible ask them to get help from a friend or family member, instead of the librarian.

El primera presentadora fue Nancy Fedrericks, bibliotecaria de e-gobierno en la Biblioteca Pública del Condado de Pasco (Florida). Fedrericks compartio algunos recursos que se encuentran en su biblioteca local, incluyendo una sección en su página web, un blog, y algunas herramientas en línea para ayudar a los usuarios a utilizar estos recursos. También habló sobre el uso que estos recursos recibe en su biblioteca y mencionó que lo mejor es tener mucho cuidado en cuando a asuntos de privacidad al ayudar a los usuarios con estos recursos, y en cuanto sea posible pedirles que busquen ayuda de un amigo o familiar, en lugar del bibliotecario.

She also shared the website LawHelp.org which offers help finding local legal help and information. The site offers resources for every state. Fredericks also has older presentations on this topic on Webjunction. También compartió en enlace LawHelp.org sitio web que ofrece ayuda para encontrar assistencia legal e información jurídica. El sitio ofrece recursos para cada estado de EE.UU. Fredericks también tiene otras presentaciones sobre este tema en Webjunction. The next presenter was Bill Sudduth, Head, Government Information and Microforms, Newspapers and Maps, University of South Carolina. Sudduth shared a number of website that are great examples of how to best offer e-gov resources. His collection of site included e-gov at every level. At the federal level there is USA.gov, and GPO Access, which offered free electronic access to documents produced by the Federal Government. Virginia.gov was a good example of a state site, and on the local level, Boston’s website took the top prize!

El siguiente ponente fue Bill Sudduth, Jefe de Información Gubernamental, Microformas, Prensa y Mapas de la Universidad de Carolina del Sur. Sudduth compartió una serie de sitio web que son excelentes ejemplos de la mejor manera de ofrecer recursos de e-gov. Su colección de sitio incluye e-gobierno a todos los niveles. A nivel federal esta USA.gov, y GPO Access, que ofrece acceso electrónico gratuito a los documentos Gobierno Federal (EE.UU). Virginia.gov es un buen ejemplo de un sitio del estado, ¡y a nivel local el sitio web de Boston se gano el primer premio!

The third and last presenter was John Bertot, Director, Center for Library & Information Innovation, University of Maryland. Bertot talked about the intersection of public libraries and E-government. He began by sharing a map of all the public libraries in the USA commenting that they really cover the entire nation, and that now that governments at every level are cutting resources, the public library has often had to fill this gap.

El tercer y último presentador fue John Bertot, Director del Centro de Innovación de Bibliotecas e Información de la Universidad de Maryland. Bertot habló sobre la intersección de las bibliotecas públicas y el gobierno electrónico. Empezó por compartir un mapa de todas las bibliotecas públicas en los EE.UU. comentando que realmente cubren toda la nación, y que ahora que los gobiernos a todos los niveles están reduciendo servicios y recursos, la biblioteca pública a menudo ha tenido que llenar este vacío.

Bertot share some information from the Center for Library & Information Innovation (CLII) in the College of Information Studies at the University of Maryland illustrating this relationship between libraries and e-gov. This site includes a lot of statistical information on the subject, and these handy fliers (this is the e-gov one), that will give you a great starting point if you need to advocate for these services at your library.

Bertot compartió información del Centro de Innovación de Bibliotecas e Información (CLII) en el Colegio de Estudios de la Información en la Universidad de Maryland que ilustra esta relación entre las bibliotecas y el e-gov. Este sitio incluye una gran cantidad de información estadística sobre el tema y estos útiles folletos (este es el de e-gov) que le dará un gran punto de partida si necesita abogar por estos servicios en su biblioteca.

At the end Bertot talked a little about the increasing need for librarians to be able to fully understand how to work with e-gov material. Because of this need the University of Maryland has established a program for E-Government Librarianship!

Al final Bertot habló un poco acerca de que cada vez es mayor la necesidad de que como bibliotecarios podamos trabajar de manera competente con este material. Debido a esta necesidad la Universidad de Maryland ha establecido un programa de Bibliotecologia para E-Gobierno!

The whole program was good, and best of all it was free! I’m already looking forward to more interesting webinars!

Todo el programa estuvo bueno, y lo mejor de todo es que salio gratis! Ya estoy deseando más seminarios interesante!
