March is Women’s History Month in the USA and a number of universities, libraries, and other educational institutions are preparing events to celebrate. This month long celebration started with events for International Women’s Day, which falls every year on March 8th.

Many of the celebrations around this date wish to write women back into history and to make sure we remain part of the narrative for the future. The National Women’s History Project is an organization that works year around towards this end. This year their theme is “Women Taking the Lead to Save our Planet“, an event which will honor women engaged in various effort to keep this planet green.

The USA Library of Congress (LOC) is celebrating by creating a website which highlights many of the treasures they hold related to women’s history. The site currently focuses on women’s contribution to the arts, offering us highlights to musicians, painters, photographer and writers; each with direct links to specific collections with in the library. There is also a section with resources to help teachers and students highlight women in the classroom.

Two more great resources for women’s history from the LOC include the America Women, and  Women at War. The Schlesinger Library is also another excellent collection on women in American history.

En EEUU Marzo es el Mes de la Mujer y universidades, bibliotecas y otras instituciones de educación están haciendo preparativos para celebrar. Este mes de celebración tiene origen con el Día Internacional de la Mujer, el cual se celebra cada 8 de Marzo.

Muchas de las celebraciones en esta fecha quieren recordar a las mujeres a lo largo de la historia, y asegurarse de que continuemos siendo parte de esta narrativa en el futuro. El proyecto Nacional de Historia de la Mujer (National Women’s History Project) es una organización que trabaja a lo largo del año hacia este fin. Este año están organizado eventos bajo el titulo de “Mujeres Tomando la Iniciativa para Salvar el Planeta,” el cual hará honor a mujeres comprometidas en la labor de mantener este planeta verde.

La Biblioteca del Congreso en EEUU esta celebrando con la creación de varios sitios web dedicados a resaltar algunos de los tesoros que tiene relacionados a la historia de las mujeres. Actualmente el sitio hace énfasis en las contribuciones que han hecho las mujeres en el campo del arte, ofreciéndonos muestras de mujeres en el campo de la música, pintura, fotografía, y escritura; cada entrada con enlaces directos a las colecciones correspondientes en la biblioteca. También hay una sección con recursos para maestros y estudiantes que deseen resaltar a las mujeres en el salón.

Dos recursos más de interés en la Biblioteca del Congreso con la colección Mujeres Americana (American Women), y Mujeres en la Guerra (Women at War). La biblioteca Schlesinger también es un recurso excelente en este campo.

Spain’s National Library has recently set the Biblioteca Digital Hispánica to highlight some of its most valuable items, including paintings, photographs, maps, and written texts spanning several centuries. The collection can be browsed through its main categories, or can be searched by keywords. The site also connects you to a number of other digital collections related to Spanish history and culture, such as the Biblioteca Cataluña, the Digital Library of the Royal Gardens, the Biblioteca Digital Vasca, the Memorias Digitales de Canarias, and the Colección Digital Complutenseamong many others.

La Biblioteca Nacional de España esta resaltando algunas de sus más valiosas pertenencias, incluyendo pinturas, fotografías, mapas y textos que cubren varios siglos, en la Biblioteca Digital Hispánica. La colección puede ser ojeada atreves de búsquedas por varias categorías ya establecidas, o se pueden conducir búsquedas por medio de palabras claves. El sitio también lo conectada a otra cantidad de colecciones digitales relacionadas con la historia y cultura Española. Estas incluyen la Biblioteca Cataluña, la Biblioteca Digital del Real Jardín Botánico, la Biblioteca Digital Vasca, las Memorias Digitales de Canarias, y la Colección Digital Complutense, entre muchas otras.

Turning the Pages is a great collection digitized books, at the British Library, that allow you to turn the pages and almost experience the real thing. The works included in this project include some very old books, such as the first atlas of Europe, Blake’s notebooks, sketches by Leonardo DaVinci, and the original Alice in Wonderland, among others. To actually see the books you will need Shockwave, but the site also has static, annotated, images of the same works that include audio.

Based on the belief that American popular culture is shaping a new global environment which each day looks more hegemonic, the National Library of Venezuela has decided to fight back. Under the direction of Fernando Báez, the National Library of Venezuela will now try to fight what they believe is a global commercialization of world libraries, an effort, they believe is spearheaded by the Library of Congress in the USA. This project wishes to expand the country’s network of public libraries, promoting nation-wide reading, and build a National Digital Library.

Fernando Báez is the author of the world wide best seller “Historia universal de la destrucción de libros,” (Universal History of the Destruction of Books) and “La destrucción cultural de Iraq” (The cultural Destruction of Iraq) which made him a persona non grata in the USA.

Granted that this program could just as well limit local diversity, it is interesting to see a formal attempt at preserving local flavor. We’ll have to keep an eye on this one to see how it unfolds.

Con base en la creencia de que la cultura popular estadounidense está dando forma a un nuevo entorno mundial que cada día se vuelve más hegemónica, la Biblioteca Nacional de Venezuela ha decidido crear oposición. Bajo la dirección de Fernando Báez, la Biblioteca Nacional de Venezuela ahora tratará de luchar contra lo que creen que es una comercialización global de las bibliotecas del mundo, un esfuerzo que creen que está encabezado por la Biblioteca del Congreso de los EE.UU. Este proyecto quiere ampliar la red de bibliotecas públicas del país, la promover la lectura a lo largo de la nación, y construir una Biblioteca Digital Nacional.

Fernando Báez es el autor del “best-seller” mundial “Historia Universal de la Destrucción de Libros y “La Destrucción Cultural de Iraq,” cosa que lo convirtió en personaje non grata en los EE.UU.

Concedido que este programa bien podría limitar la diversidad local, es interesante ver un intento formal de preservar el sabor local. Vamos a tener que mantener un ojo sobre éste proceso para ver cómo se desarrolla.

In a gesture of good faith, the Chilean government has returned close to 4,000 books that were plundered from the Peruvian National library back in 1881 during the War of the Pacific. Some of these books were written in French, Spanish, Greek and Latin, and date as far back as the 16th century. Some of the treasures returned include a hand written copy of “The History of Peru” by the Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, in 1617.

The return of these books is part of ongoing negotiations between the two countries which have had a number of problems over border disputes.

A World Digital Library is coming together after an agreement signed yesterday between Abdul Waheed Khan, UNESCO’s Assistant Director-General for Communications and Information, and James H. Billington, Librarian of Congress in the USA’s Library of Congress. The project was started in 2005 by a $3 million grant from Google.

Una biblioteca digital mundial se está creando después de un acuerdo firmado ayer entre Abdul Waheed Khan, Subdirector de la UNESCO Director General Adjunto de Comunicaciones e Información, y James H. Billington, Bibliotecario del Congreso de los EE.UU. Biblioteca del Congreso. El proyecto fue iniciado en 2005 con una donación de $ 3 millones de Google.

The project aims is to create digital copies of unique material from libraries around the world and make them available over the internet for free. Some of the libraries participating include the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the National Library of Egypt, the National Library of Brazil, the National Library of Russia and the Russian State Library.

El objetivo del proyecto es crear copias digitales de material único de bibliotecas de todo el mundo y ponerlas a disposición del mundo y de forma gratuita a través de la web. Algunas de las bibliotecas participantes incluyen la Biblioteca de Alejandría, la Biblioteca Nacional de Egipto, la Biblioteca Nacional de Brasil, la Biblioteca Nacional de Rusia y la Biblioteca Estatal de Rusia.

The prototype for this digital collection is still being worked on, but it is expected to function in all six official UN languages; Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish, and Portuguese.

El prototipo de esta colección digital se sigue trabajando, pero se espera que funcione en los seis idiomas oficiales de las Naciones Unidas; árabe, chino, francés, ruso y español, y el portugués.

This project also aims at helping develop the capabilities of developing countries to create and promote digital libraries. This way the collection can reflect more of the world’s culture, and hopefully will help promote cross-cultural learning and understanding, while simultaneously preserving some rare objects from these collections.

Este proyecto también pretende ayudar a desarrollar las capacidades de los países en desarrollo para crear y promover las bibliotecas digitales. De esta forma la colección puede reflejar más de la cultura del mundo y se espera ayude a promover el aprendizaje intercultural y el entendimiento, y al mismo tiempo la preservación de algunos objetos raros de estas colecciones.

Library work is usually perceived as being practiced only indoors, but in developing countries the promotion of education, reading and books needs to happen wherever people are. This has lead to creative approaches to the old model of book mobiles.

Some of my favorite examples include a mobile library in Kenya which aims at providing library services to some of the nomadic tribes in the country. This seems like the perfect approach given limited resources, and the communities needs. IFLA (International Federation of Library Associations) has also written about the subject. Their article is here.

Colombia has a “biblioburro” in the state of Magdalena. A local professor saw the need children had to access books, so he created his own mobile library, traveling the area with donkeys. Only in the land of García Márquez do donkeys and books come together so gracefully. There is actually an entire blog dedicated to a similar project in the Sierra Nevada; accesses the blog here.

Usualmente percibimos el trabajo de bibliotecas como una profesión que solo se practica dentro de edificios de una clase u otra, pero en algunos países en desarrollo la promoción de la educación, la lectura, y los libros debe tomar lugar donde quiera que hayan personas que necesitan los servicios. Esto a creado nuevas y creativas opciones del viejo concepto de bibliotecas móvil.

Algunos de mis ejemplos favoritos incluyen una biblioteca móvil en Kenia que presta servicios de biblioteca a varias tribus nómadas a través del país. Esta parece una solución perfecta dado el limite de recursos y las necesidades de la comunidad. IFLA (Federacion Internacional de Asociación de Bibliotecas) también ha escrito sobre el tema; el articulo lo puede encontrar aquí.

En el estado Colombiano de Magdalena puede encontrar al “biblioburro”. Un profesor de la región vio que los niños del área necesitaban acceso a libros así es que decidió crear una biblioteca móvil que se desplaza en el área a lomo de burro. Solo en la tierra de Gracia Marque se unen los burros y los libros con tanta gracias. Y es mas, hay un blog entero dedicado a un proyecto similar en la Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. 08.05.07 – Hace poco la BBC saco otro articulo sobre otro biblioburro, esta vez basado en Venezuela. El programa empezo en la Universidad de Momboy repartiendo libros, pero ha crecido y ahora también reparten computadores portátiles, y proyectores que toda la comunidad puede usar.
