The Spanish Ministry of Culture has created the Red de Bibliotecas de Museos (BIMUS) in order to make the holdings of a number of museum libraries available to the general public. The project wishes to promote collaboration through the use of a common online catalog, develop common policies such as cooperative acquisitions, and foment interlibrary exchanges.

El Ministerio español de Cultura ha creado la Red de Bibliotecas de Museos (BIMUS) a fin de hacer las colecciones de estas bibliotecas disponibles al público en general. El proyecto quiere fomentar la colaboración mediante la utilización de un catálogo en línea común, desarrollar políticas comunes, tales como las adquisiciones de cooperación, y fomentar el intercambio entre bibliotecas.

Bubisher is a really heart-warming project that started with a group of students at the Colegio San Marciso who wanted to help promote literacy among refugees in the Sahara. The children initially got involved to help promote literacy, but when the realized how difficult it was to access reading material in the area, they thought that a book mobile would be a good option. Money came in part from the children’s allowance, and the bus was donated by the Asociación de   Amigos del Pueblo Saharaui del País Vasco.

Bubisher es realmente un proyecto que alienta al corazón. Bubisher empezó con un grupo de estudiantes en el Colegio San Marciso quienes querían ayudar a promover la alfabetización entre los refugiados en el Sahara. Los niños querían ayudar a promover la alfabetización, pero se dieron cuenta de cuál difícil es llegar a todos los niños que necesitar de libros así es que se les ocurrió que una biblioteca móvil seria una buena solución al problema. El dinero vino de parte de la mesada de los niños, y el autobús fue donado por la Asociación de Amigos del Pueblo Saharaui del País Vasco.

I just found out that the Spanish Ministry of Culture is offering scholarships for library and archive professionals from a number of Spanish speaking countries. To apply you must be a citizen of one of the following countries: Andorra, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Portugal, the Dominican Republic, Uruguay, or Venezuela. Application will also be considered from Equatorial Guinea, the Philippines, and Puerto Rico, as will application from Spanish citizens residing in any of these countries. Applications are due on May 4th, so good luck!

Sometimes is seems like all my friends are trying to learn or improve their Spanish, which I love, and encourage as much as I can. So here’s a tool that might help you all!

El Castellano.org is a site that tries to gather web resources that will aid in learning Spanish, both the European and Latin American versions of it. The site offers various dictionaries, including one specialized in Argentine Spanish and another for botany. There are also a couple sections that explain certain parts of the language where new learners might easily be confused; for example the difference between “dentro” and “adentro”. It has a number of stories related to the language’s history, including information on Nebrija, author of the first text of Spanish language grammar (1492) and the first Spanish language dictionary (1495).

You’ll also find links to other websites this group recommends, and links to Spanish language radio stations around the world, so you can start educating your ears. There’s a page titled Spanishpoint where you’ll find links to (mostly) stories about the language around the world. Some of the current entries include a discussion about the use of a “neutral” version of the language that can be used across all of the Spanish speaking world, and an article on the Spanish spoken by Jews in Spain back in the 15th century. You’ll also find a lot of other random stories there.

Interestingly, the site was established by a group of Spanish speaking people from around the world, having members in Argentina, Spain, Uruguay, and Brazil.

And a few stats to encourage you to learn more Spanish;

• Spanish is the official language of 21 countries around the globe.
• It’s an oficial language to the UN, the EU, the OAS, and NAFTA.
• Spanish is the 4th language in the world in terms of number of speakers, with 330 million of us.

Spain’s National Library has recently set the Biblioteca Digital Hispánica to highlight some of its most valuable items, including paintings, photographs, maps, and written texts spanning several centuries. The collection can be browsed through its main categories, or can be searched by keywords. The site also connects you to a number of other digital collections related to Spanish history and culture, such as the Biblioteca Cataluña, the Digital Library of the Royal Gardens, the Biblioteca Digital Vasca, the Memorias Digitales de Canarias, and the Colección Digital Complutenseamong many others.

La Biblioteca Nacional de España esta resaltando algunas de sus más valiosas pertenencias, incluyendo pinturas, fotografías, mapas y textos que cubren varios siglos, en la Biblioteca Digital Hispánica. La colección puede ser ojeada atreves de búsquedas por varias categorías ya establecidas, o se pueden conducir búsquedas por medio de palabras claves. Radio Televisión Española has created a great radio series tracing the history of literature. Each session is about an hour long and covers a specific topic, such as knights in literature, places, couples, animals, seductresses, and war, among others. Each includes examples of specific texts, accompanying music, and sound effects.

The program was created as a summer reading activity. All audio files are in Spanish.

Radio Televisión Española ha creado una seria radial excelente, que traza la historia de la literatura. Cada sesión dura aproximadamente una hora y cubre un tema específico, como los caballeros en la literatura, lugares, parejas, animales, seductoras, y la guerra. Cada sesión incluye textos específicos, música acompañante, y efectos especiales.

El programa fue creado como una actividad de lectura para el verano.

World Book and Copyright Day (what a mouthful) is a yearly event to commemorate Miguel de Cervantes, William Shakespeare, and the Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, all major figures in world writing (and I wonder where the women are…). Legend says that all these great men died on April 23, 1616, although more accurate calculations reveal that Shakespeare’s death date was actually marked on a Julian calendar, and therefore should be May 3 rd. on the Gregorian calendar.

In any case, the date was proposed to the UNESCO’s International Union of Editor as a day to promote culture and raise awareness around intellectual property rights. Final approval came on November 15, 1995.

Current festivities include a rotating title of World Book Capital. This began in 2001 with Madrid, last year it was Bogotá, and this year the world’s book capital is Amsterdam, next year it will be Beirut.

El Día Internacional de Libro es un evento anual para conmemorar a Miguel de Cervantes, William Shakespeare, y el Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, todas grandes figuras en el mundo de la escritora (¿y donde estarán las mujeres…?). La leyenda dice que los tres hombres murieron el 23 de abril de 1616, aunque cálculos mas acertados revelan que Shakespeare realmente fue notada en un calendario Juliano, lo que traduce al 3 de mayo en el calendario gregoriano.

En todo casi, la fecha fue propuesta por la Unión Internacional de Editores de UNESCO para promover la cultura y crear consciencia sobre la propiedad intelectual. Aprobación del proyecto llego el 15 de noviembre de 1995.

Actualmente las celebraciones incluyen una Capital Mundial del Libro, la cual rota cada año. Esto empezó en el 2001 con Madrid, el año pasado le toco a Bogotá, y este año la capital mundial es Ámsterdam, en año entrante será Beirut.
