This picture has been doing the round through email and I just had to share it. I LOVE that we have a president now who has brought back intelligence as a cool thing. How did we ever get through eight years with a guy who was proud of being a C student? And who would tell others that they too could be a C student and become president of the USA. What he forgot to add was that you need a rich family and lots of connects to acomplish this. But we’re on to greener pastures!

I shared this image with a friend who commented that it didn’t look like a real library because “all the books look the same.” They do, and that’s what legal collections tend to look like. I’m assuming this is the Harvard Law School Library and Obama is probably standing in front of books of code for a particular state, or maybe a specific field of commerce. Which makes me wonder how anything gets done with it takes this many books to hold the rules to play by.

This photo was originally used when Obama became the first black editor to the Harvard Law Review back in 1990, but I don’t know who was the clever person who added the text.

Me encanta que ahora tenemos un presidente que nos ha regresado a la idea de que ser inteligente cosa de admirar. ¿Cómo fue que sobrevivimos ocho anos con un tipo orgulloso de su propia mediocridad? Además de eso, uno que le gustaba decirle a los demás que también podrían ser mediocres y aspirar a algún día ser presidentes de USA. Lo que siempre se le olvidaba agregar es que también hace falta tener una familia rica y muchas conexiones. Pero bueno, ¡ya estamos en mejores tiempos!

Le mostré esta foto a un amigo que comento que la foto no parecía en una biblioteca de verdad porque todos los libros se ven iguales. Si, son iguales, pero así son las colecciones de material legal. Asumo que la foto es en la biblioteca de derecho de Harvard, y que Obama está parado frente a libros de códigos de algún estado en particular, o alguna industria. Lo cual me lleva a preguntar ¿cómo es que logramos funcionar cuando se requieren tantos libros para guardar las reglas del juego?

Esta foto originalmente fue usada cuando Obama se convirtió en la primera persona negra en ser el editor del Harvard Law Review, en 1990, pero no sé quien fue el astuto que agrego el texto.

The Chicano Studies Center at UCLA has uploaded over 41,000 songs to an online repository titled Musica de la Frontera. A number of these songs date back as early as 1900, and cover a wide range of musical genres, including Tejano, Chicano and Mexican American. Full access to the archive is only available to UCLA patrons; the rest of us can listen to 50 seconds of each song, look at the record labels, and read background information on the song.

This project received generous help from the Arhoolie Foundation, and Los Tigres del Norte.

El Chicano Studies Center en UCLA ha digitizado mas de 41.00 canciones a una base de datos titulada Música de la Frontera. Algunas de las canciones incluidas datan de 1900, y cubren un gran rango de estilos de música, incluyendo Tejano, Chicano, y música Mexicoamericana. Acceso completo a esta colección se reserva para aquellos afiliados con UCLA; el resto de nosotros podemos escuchar 50 segundos de cada canción, además de ver las caratulas de los discos, y leer información sobre cada canción.

I just read about a call for help to assist in the saving of hundreds of years worth of information on birds’ migrating patters. The North American Bird Phenology Program has 6 million note cards, dating back to the 1880s sitting in a Basement in Virginia, which they need help converting into digital files. There’s a call for volunteers to help transcribe this information, which they explain can help scientists trace bird patters, which in turn can help explore patters in climate change. Volunteers are asked to take a 15 minute online tutorial, and are then given access to hundreds of these cards to be manually transcribed into a database. Volunteers can work from the comfort of their home while helping preserve this information. If you wish to help, here’s the contact link.

Las Comadres & Friends National Latino Book Club is a partnership between Las Comadres, Association of American Publishers (AAP) and Borders to promote the reading of Latino writers.

The group meets once a month in a selected venue (usually a Borders book store) to discuss the previously selected book. Discussions are conducted in English as are the selected books, although many are available in Spanish as well. I assume this is done to make the group accesible to more people. The other neat thing is that whenever possible the author participates in these events as well, via teleconference.

Membership is open to everyone, and if you wish to join them for the next session the book currently being read is “Notorious“, by Michele Martinez; the meeting is March 30th. Here’s a list of all the venues nationwide.

Las Comadres & Friends National Latino Book Club es una asociación entre Las Comadres, Association of American Publisher (AAP) y la tienda de libros Borders para promover la lectura de autores Latinos.

El grupo se reúne una vez al mes en un sitio designado (usualmente una tienda de Borders) para discutir el libro previamente seleccionado. Las discusiones son en ingles, así como los libros seleccionados, aunque usualmente los libros también se encuentran en traducciones al español. Otra cosa interesante de este proyecto es que cuando es posible el autor participa en los eventos, usualmente vía teleconferencia.

Membresía al grupo esta abierto a todos, y si desea atender la próxima reunión el libro a leer es “Notorious” de Michele Martínez. El grupo se reunirá el 30 de Marzo. Aquí encontrara la lista de todos los sitios de reunión alrededor del país.

Financial advice at the public library? Apparently so. As unstable and scary as the financial landscape appears these days all of us seem to be looking for advice where we can find it. Smart investing@your library® initiative, a partnership between FINRA (Financial Industry Regulatory Authority) Investor Education Foundation and ALA (American Library Association) has established a number of grants to help libraries establish programs that will help the community learn about the economy. And let’s be clear, the librarians establishing these programs are not going to tell you what stock to buy, but they will help you learn about the larger system at play, how to keep track of new developments, and other general trends.

FINRA believes public libraries are an obvious place for these programs because they can reach so many people in the community, and so far the programs are getting good reviews. Newton Public Library, in Newton, MA used their grant money to set up a retirement planning club for women, back in 2008. The group initially provided a space for women of all ages to get together and discuss the larger economic situation, talk about the options they had, and serve as a support group to each other. Over time, the group has continued to grow, now including a number of men as well.

Interestingly these grant were started over two years ago, appearing to have been ahead of the curve which brought us this crisis. During 2009 this partnership has invested $882,000 in grants which were be offered to 12 recipients, who in turn have established different programs, some geared towards women, immigrant families, youth, seniors, or low-income families;

¿Asesoramiento financiero en la biblioteca pública? Parece que sí. Como lo inestable y aterrador del panorama financiero en estos días todos parecen estar buscando consejos donde quiera que los podemos encontrar. La inversión Smart investing@your library®, una asociación entre FINRA (Financial Industry Regulatory Authority) Investor Education Foundation y ALA (American Library Association) ha establecido una serie de subvenciones para ayudar a las bibliotecas de establecer programas que ayuden a la comunidad a aprender acerca de la economía. Y seamos claros, los bibliotecarios que crearon estos programas no van a decirle como jugar la bolsa de valores, pero le ayudaran a aprender sobre el sistema financiero en general, cómo realizar un seguimiento de nuevos desarrollos, y otras tendencias generales.

FINRA cree que las bibliotecas públicas son un lugar obvio para estos programas, ya que pueden llegar a gran parte de la comunidad y hasta ahora los programas que están recibiendo buena críticas. En el 2008 la Biblioteca Pública de Newton en Newton MA utilizo su dinero de la subvención para crear un club de la planificación para mujeres jubiladas. Al principio el grupo era un espacio donde mujeres de todas las edades se podían reunir y hablar sobre economía y finanzas, además de servir como espacio de apoyo entre ellas. Con el tiempo, el grupo ha seguido creciendo, y ahora incluyen un número de hombres.

Es interesante que estas subvenciones se iniciaran hace dos años, al parecen anticipando esta crisis. En el 2009 esta asociación ha invertido 882.000 dólares en donaciones que fueron a ofrecer a 12 beneficiarios, que a su vez han creado diferentes programas algunos orientados hacia las mujeres, las familias de inmigrantes, jóvenes, personas mayores, o familias de bajos ingresos;

March is Women’s History Month in the USA and a number of universities, libraries, and other educational institutions are preparing events to celebrate. This month long celebration started with events for International Women’s Day, which falls every year on March 8th.

Many of the celebrations around this date wish to write women back into history and to make sure we remain part of the narrative for the future. The National Women’s History Project is an organization that works year around towards this end. This year their theme is “Women Taking the Lead to Save our Planet“, an event which will honor women engaged in various effort to keep this planet green.

The USA Library of Congress (LOC) is celebrating by creating a website which highlights many of the treasures they hold related to women’s history. The site currently focuses on women’s contribution to the arts, offering us highlights to musicians, painters, photographer and writers; each with direct links to specific collections with in the library. There is also a section with resources to help teachers and students highlight women in the classroom.

Two more great resources for women’s history from the LOC include the America Women, and  Women at War. The Schlesinger Library is also another excellent collection on women in American history.

En EEUU Marzo es el Mes de la Mujer y universidades, bibliotecas y otras instituciones de educación están haciendo preparativos para celebrar. Este mes de celebración tiene origen con el Día Internacional de la Mujer, el cual se celebra cada 8 de Marzo.

Muchas de las celebraciones en esta fecha quieren recordar a las mujeres a lo largo de la historia, y asegurarse de que continuemos siendo parte de esta narrativa en el futuro. El proyecto Nacional de Historia de la Mujer (National Women’s History Project) es una organización que trabaja a lo largo del año hacia este fin. Este año están organizado eventos bajo el titulo de “Mujeres Tomando la Iniciativa para Salvar el Planeta,” el cual hará honor a mujeres comprometidas en la labor de mantener este planeta verde.

La Biblioteca del Congreso en EEUU esta celebrando con la creación de varios sitios web dedicados a resaltar algunos de los tesoros que tiene relacionados a la historia de las mujeres. Actualmente el sitio hace énfasis en las contribuciones que han hecho las mujeres en el campo del arte, ofreciéndonos muestras de mujeres en el campo de la música, pintura, fotografía, y escritura; cada entrada con enlaces directos a las colecciones correspondientes en la biblioteca. También hay una sección con recursos para maestros y estudiantes que deseen resaltar a las mujeres en el salón.

Dos recursos más de interés en la Biblioteca del Congreso con la colección Mujeres Americana (American Women), y Mujeres en la Guerra (Women at War). La biblioteca Schlesinger también es un recurso excelente en este campo.

GlobaLex is a site maintained by the Hauser Global Law School Program, of New York University’s School of Law, which gathers a large amount of useful information on foreign law. Information is broken down into four main categories, International Law Research, Comparative Law Research, Foreign Law Research, and Tools for Building Foreign Comparative and International Law Collections.

International Law Research gathers information on different topics relating to international law, such as human trafficking, international commerce, international refugees, and the UN, among many other topics.

Comparative Law Research has information on comparative civil procedure, criminal procedure, and immigration law, among other topics.

Under Foreign Law Research you will find an extensive list of countries followed by a compilation of legal resources related to it. Each collection was put together by someone who has knowledge on the subject.

Finally the last category has a few links on topics such as collection development policies for international law, and the Legal Information Institute, and the Free Access to Law Movement.

This is an excellent site to beging any kind of research that has a legal component to it. It will also be very helpful to complement any type of research on one of the topics covered here.

GlobaLex es un sitio mantenido por el Hauser Global Law School Program, del departamento de Derecho de la New York University, que reúne una gran cantidad de información útil sobre la ley internacional. I just ran into the site Academic Earth and was fascinated to find entire academic lectures available for free! The site is a collaboration between a number of prestigious American universities, each one sharing one or more videos of a lecture taught on their campus. Lectures can be search by subject, university, and instructor.

Looking though the site you will notice that some subject are more heavily loaded than others. There are quite a few lectures in the field of astronomy, but only three lectures under history.

The project reminds me of the OpenCourseWare project, a consortium that provides lectures and other educational material absolutely for free from universities around the world.

Acabo de tropezarme con el sitio Academic Earth, y quede fascinada al encontrar una cantidad de charlas académicas a disposición de todos y ¡gratis! El sitio es una colaboración entre un número de instituciones académicas bastante prestigiosas en EEUU, cada una compartiendo uno o mas videos de charlas ofrecidas en su institución. Las charlas se pueden buscar por medio de búsquedas de tema, universidad y profesor.

Mirando el sitio me doy cuenta de que algunos temas tienen una cantidad de videos, y otros muy pocos. Hay una cantidad de charlas sobre astronomía, pero solo tres sobre historia.

Este proyecto me recuerda al proyecto de OpenCourseWare, un consorcio de charlas y material educativo completamente originando de universidades alrededor del mundo, todo completamente gratis y al alcance de quien tenga acceso al Internet.

I grew up listening to Rubén Blades, -by far one of my favorite musicians-, and I just found out that he has agreed to donate his personal papers to the Eda Kuhn Loed Music Library at Harvard! It will take a few years for the complete transition and cataloging of the material, but in the end the collection should include his personal documents (excluding those directly related to his work as Panama’s Minister of Tourism), rare recordings of rehearsals, concerts, films, and books. And given the man’s long and interesting life, I suspect the collection will be fascinating.

Blades was born in 1948 in Panama, and although he is best known as a salsa singer, he is also a songwriter, actor, Latin Jazz musician, lawyer (Harvard Law ’85) and most recently Panama’s Minister for Tourism. Blades even ran for president in Panama in 1994.

This collection will be arriving at Harvard thanks to the efforts of José Massó, presenter for ¡Con Salsa!, and Alison Weinstock, a Blades fan who created maestravida.com.

I think what I like best of Blades is not only that his music is great to dance to, but that so much of it takes a deeper look into Latin America’s reality. One of my favorite song is “El Padre Antonio y su Monaguillo Andres” which tells the story of a Vatican priest who arrives in the developing world wishing to help out, but half way through a sermon, both the priest and the altar boy are killed. No one ever finds the attackers. (The song alludes to the killing of Monsignor Romero in El Salvador.) When performed live Blades comments that in Latin American people get killed, but ideas will not die.

Y dado la larga e interesante carrera del hombre estoy segura de que la colección será fascinante.

Blades nación el Panamá en 1948, y aunque es mejor conocido como cantante de salsa, también es cantautor, actor, músico del genero Latín Jazz, abogado (Harvard Law ’85), y recientemente ejerció como ministro de turismo en Panamá. Blades incluso se lanzó a la presidencia de Panamá en 1994.

I recently ran across this online radio station that offers news in a completely bilingual format. The appropriately named station, Radio Bilingüe, is based in California, with offices in San Francisco, and Salinas, and has been serving the USA based Latino community for 15 years.

Radio Bilingüe has three mayor programs Línea Abierta, Noticiero Latino and Rocking Da House. All offer a variety of news and music of interest to the Latino community. There are also longer series covering special topics, the current one discusses educational needs for Latinos is this time of economic crisis. All of the programs offer audio, and some have full transcriptions as well.

Hace poco encontré esta emisora radial en línea que ofrece noticias en un formato completamente bilingüe. La emisora, apropiadamente llamada Radio Bilingüe está basada en California, y tiene oficinas en San Francisco y Salinas, y ha estado trabajando para la comunidad Latina en EEUU por 15 años.

Radio Bilingüe tiene tres programas principales, Línea Abierta, Noticiero Latino and Rocking Da House. Todos ofrecen una variedad de música y noticias de interés a la comunidad Latina. También tienen programas de análisis más largos; el tema actual analiza las necesidades educacionales de los Latinos durante esta crisis económica. Todos los programas ofrecen audio y algunos tienen transcripciones completas.
