Late last month the Spanish Minister of Culture, Ángeles González-Sinde, announced the release of Hispana: colecciones digitales de archivos, bibliotecas y museos españoles. Hispana aggregates over one million digital items from 121 different Spanish institutions, including libraries, museums, archives, as well as private and public organizations. The site also includes a directory of ongoing digitization projects in Spain, currently totaling well over 400 entries. In essence it is the Spanish version of Europeana. The site functions in Spanish, English, Catalan, Basque, and Galician.

A fines del mes pasado la ministra española de cultura, Ángeles González-Sinde anunció el lanzamiento de Hispana: Colecciones Digitales de Archivos, Bibliotecas y Museos españoles. Hispana reúne más de un millón de artículos digitales originando de 121 instituciones españolas, incluyendo bibliotecas, museos, archivos, así como organizaciones privadas y públicas. El sitio también incluye un directorio de proyectos de digitalización en curso en España, en la actualidad incluye más de 400 entradas. En esencia, es la versión española de Europeana. El sitio funciona en Español, Inglés, Catalán, Vasco y Gallego.

The British Library is always up to something interesting; I just discovered their Database of Bookbindings. This is an entire online collection dedicated to the bindings of books held by the British Library, some of which date back to 1500! The collection also includes some items held by the National Library of Netherlands.

The collection includes a lot of images that will help you better understand who books have been put together over the years, and will likely be a great resource for anyone learning this beautiful craft.

La Biblioteca Británica está creando proyectos interesantes; acabo de descubrir su base de datos de encuadernaciones. Se trata de una colección en línea dedicada a la encuadernación de libros de la Biblioteca Británica, algunos de los cuales se remontan a 1500! La colección también incluye algunos elementos de la Biblioteca Nacional de Países Bajos.

La colección incluye una gran cantidad de imágenes que le ayudarán a comprender mejor como se han encuadernado los libros a travez de los años, y probablemente será un gran recurso para cualquier persona que aprenden este hermoso arte.

Take a look at the UK’s smallest library! The resourceful folks from Westbury-sub-Mendip in Somerset converted an old phone booth that was out of use into a small lending library after the town lost its library. People bring books they have read and exchange them for new reading material, CDs and DVDs.

The Stendhal University of Grenoble has joined forces with the city’s public library to create the digital collection Les Manuscrits de Stendhal. The site includes Stendhal‘s personal correspondence, as well as reflections on travels, literature and philosophy. And in case you are about to start looking for the manuscripts of  “The Red and the Black” and “The Charterhouse of Parma,” know that both were destroyed after publication, as was tradition back then. The website looks quite complete, and only functions in French.

La Universidad Stendhal de Grenoble se ha unido con la biblioteca pública de la ciudad para crear la colección digital Les Manuscrits de Stendhal. El sitio incluye la correspondencia personal de Stendhal así como reflexiones sobre viajes, literatura y filosofía. Y en caso de que este a punto de empezar a buscar los manuscritos de “Rojo y Negro” y “La cartuja de Parma,” sepa que ambos fueron destruidas después de su publicación, como era tradición en aquel entonces. El sitio web se ve bastante completo, y funciona sólo en francés.

The Spanish Ministry of Culture has created the Red de Bibliotecas de Museos (BIMUS) in order to make the holdings of a number of museum libraries available to the general public. The project wishes to promote collaboration through the use of a common online catalog, develop common policies such as cooperative acquisitions, and foment interlibrary exchanges.

El Ministerio español de Cultura ha creado la Red de Bibliotecas de Museos (BIMUS) a fin de hacer las colecciones de estas bibliotecas disponibles al público en general. El proyecto quiere fomentar la colaboración mediante la utilización de un catálogo en línea común, desarrollar políticas comunes, tales como las adquisiciones de cooperación, y fomentar el intercambio entre bibliotecas.

The European Library portal can help you search the online catalogs to all the major libraries in the European Union. The project originates from the TEL-project which was set up as a cooperative framework that would facilitate access to all the major national and deposit collection from Europe’s national libraries. The European Library is financed by the Conference of European National Librarians (CENL).

The site offers users a variety of options when searching material. You can search as you would in any other OPAC, you can browse by country, or by library. The site also functions in about two dozen languages, although this does not mean the results will be in the language of your choice. This is because The European Library only serves as en intermediate to the variety of libraries that compose it, so the results you see are in the catalog for the library which own is. This means that to get the full experience with all these wonderful collections you would have to read many of the major European languages. Still, there are plenty of collections in English, and even if you can’t read all the instructions, I’m sure you can click away and find some interesting material. You can also try asking for help to find a specific item.

Take a look, there is an amazing array of collections on almost every topic to enjoy, including posters, journals, music, poetry, photography, atlases, cartoons, portraits, and more.

RTVE.es is Spain’s Radio and Television Corporation, and between news reports and other stories they also include reviews of the world’s literary classics. Presenter Esther Lorenzo creates brief descriptions of the story, gives some historical background, gives a little description of the specific edition she read, and encourages the listener to read the classics. Currently the archives include classics originally written in all languages, although in the case of book written in languages other than Spanish,  Lorenzo is reviewing their Spanish translations.

La Presentadora Esther Lorenzo crea una breve descripción de la historia, da algunos antecedentes históricos, incluye una breve descripción de la edición específica que leyó, y anima al público a leer los clásicos. Actualmente, los archivos incluyen clásicos escrito en una cantidad de idiomas, aunque en el caso del libro escrito en idiomas distintos del español, Lorenzo la leído su traducción al español.

The Atlas database at the Louvre provides access to all the items exhibited at the museum, some 30,000 items. This database was first up and running in French, and currently functions in English thanks to financial help the American Friends of the Louvre. Each item can be magnified, and comes with a brief description.

You can search the site by running simple searched on a specific artist, work, or style. You can also browse by museum room, department, or recent acquisitions. Do take note that there is a much larger selection to browse through if you are using the French interface.

La base de datos Atlas en el Louvre ofrece acceso a todos los objetos expuestos en el museo, unos 30.000 artículos. Esta base de datos empezo funcionando en francés, y ahora también funciona en inglés, gracias a la ayuda financiera de los Amigos Americanos del Louvre. Cada elemento puede ser ampliada, y viene con una breve descripción.

Usted puede buscar en el sitio mediante la ejecución de simples búsquedas en un determinado artista, pedazo de arte, o estilo. También puede navegar por sala del museo, el departamento, o las adquisiciones recientes. Tome nota de que la selección a mirar es mucho mas grande si esta usando el interfaz en francés.

Today the Times Online has a interesting article about ImHalal, a new search engine designed to help Muslims navigate the web without running into potentially “sinful” material.

The service was developed by the Dutch company AZS Media Group, and was launched yesterday. Currently ImHalal functions in 15 different languages, and the developers expect it to really take off in the Middle East.

ImHalal works like any other search engine, you type in a keyword and hit enter, except, here if you enter a potentially risky word you will get a message telling you the level of risk you will be exposed to if you run the search. Results deemed to be level 3 out of 3 will not run at all.

In you find any inconsistencies or have questions there is a feedback bottom on the left-hand side.

Hoy el Times Online tiene un artículo interesante acerca de ImHalal, un nuevo motor de búsqueda diseñado para ayudar a los musulmanes a navegar la web sin tropezar con material que pueda interpretarse como “pecaminoso”.

El servicio fue desarrollado por la empresa neerlandesa AZS Media Group, y fue lanzado ayer. Actualmente ImHalal funciona en 15 idiomas, y los desarrolladores esperan que realmente tenga acogida en el Oriente Medio.

ImHalal funciona como cualquier otro motor de búsqueda, escriba una palabra clave y pulse “Enter”, excepto que si usted introduce una palabra potencialmente riesgosa le aparecerá un mensaje que indica el nivel de riesgo al que será expuestos si se ejecuta la búsqueda. Los resultados considerados de nivel 3 entre 3 no funcionará en absoluto.

Si encuentra cualquier inconsistencia o tiene alguna duda hay un botón de contacto al lado izquierdo.
