Bubisher is a really heart-warming project that started with a group of students at the Colegio San Marciso who wanted to help promote literacy among refugees in the Sahara. The children initially got involved to help promote literacy, but when the realized how difficult it was to access reading material in the area, they thought that a book mobile would be a good option. Money came in part from the children’s allowance, and the bus was donated by the Asociación de   Amigos del Pueblo Saharaui del País Vasco.

Bubisher es realmente un proyecto que alienta al corazón. Bubisher empezó con un grupo de estudiantes en el Colegio San Marciso quienes querían ayudar a promover la alfabetización entre los refugiados en el Sahara. Anne Boleyn: A New Life of England’s Tragic Queen by Joanna Denny

My rating: 3 of 5 stars
In this book Denny sets out to “correct” the negative impression history has left on Anne Boleyn, but unfortunatly she goes to the opposite extreme painting Boleyn as a passive victim to Henry VIII and history.

The book is an interesting read, but certainly not an unbiased review of Boleyn, or the time period.

If you are interested in other perspectives on Boleyn try the podcast that The British Library recently uploaded to their website. There is also the Tudor History website, and the EnglighHistory.net site.

En este libro Joanna Denny intenta “corregir” la impresión negativa de la historia ha dejado de Anne Bolena, pero desafortunadamente se va hasta el extremo opuesto, pintando a la Bolena como víctima pasiva de Henry VIII y de la historia.

El libro es una lectura interesante, pero ciertamente no es un examen imparcial de la Bolena, ni del período.

While I was in Berlin I learned about the two large Latin American research groups in Europe, REDIAL and CEISAL. REDIAL (Red Europea de Información y Documentación sobre América Latina) started in 1988 through the gathering of a number of research centers interested in Latin America. CEISAL (Consejo Europeo de Investigaciones Sociales de América Latina) dates back to 1971 starting with an initiative to build connections between Eastern and Western Europe in order to build an academic discourse on Latin America.

Currently these two organizations have a web portal where they display a lot of information relevant to anyone interested in the region. The site offers links to a number of libraries with Latin American collections, their publications, journals (including full-text articles),  newspapers from the region, and a directory of European based Latinoamericanist. They also link out to E-Samba which gathers related links from around the web.

Mientras andaba por Berlín me enteré de los dos grandes grupos de investigación sobre América Latina en Europa, REDIAL y CEISAL. REDIAL (Red Europea de Información y Documentación sobre América Latina) se inició en 1988 a través de la colaboración de varios centros de investigación interesados en América Latina. CEISAL (Consejo Europeo de Investigaciones Sociales de América Latina) se remonta a 1971 a partir de una iniciativa para crear conexiones entre Europa oriental y occidental a fin de construir un discurso académico sobre América Latina.

Actualmente, estas dos organizaciones tienen un portal web en el que reúnen una gran cantidad de información relevante para cualquier persona interesada en la región. Today I spent the morning at Trinity College. After a quick tour of the campus I headed towards the library where I wanted to see the Book of Kells, and the the Long Room.

Hoy pasé la mañana en Trinity College. Después de un recorrido rápido por el campus me dirigí hacia la biblioteca donde quería ver el Libro de Kells, y el Long Room.

The Book of Kells is another one of these really old bibles, this one dating back to ca. 800, and it is currently bound as multiple volumes. The books are illuminated manuscripts containing the four Gospels of the New Testament. What sets this manuscript apart, is both it’s age, as well as the detail of the illustrations included. It derives its names from the Kells Abby where it was housed for many centuries.

El Libro de Kells es otra de estas bíblias muy antiguas, y se remonta a ca. 800; actualmente está encuadernada en varios volúmenes. Los libros son manuscritos iluminados que contienen los cuatro Evangelios del Nuevo Testamento. Lo que diferencia a este manuscrito, es su edad, así como el detalle de las ilustraciones incluidas. El manuscrito deriva su nombre Monasterio Kells donde se alojo por muchos siglos.

The room where the Book of Kells is located also contains a detailed exhibit explaining its history, how it was transcribed, how different pigments were created, and how the manuscript itself was made. There I found out that the Book of Kells was created for use on special occasions, and that is is full of textual errors.

After seeing the Book of Kells, I continued on to the Long Room, which is the main chamber of the original library. The room was built in 1850, originally with a flat ceiling, but it was remodeled in 1865 to include the vault ceiling that it is famous for today.

Today I got a “behind the scenes” tour of the National Library of Ireland! On my visit I found out that the library is quite a welcoming place to people from all around the world. Any local resident, or any person with a passport in hand can receive a library card, and use the library’s collection.

Hoy me dieron un tour “detrás de las escenas” de la Biblioteca Nacional de Irlanda! En mi visita me enteré que la biblioteca es un lugar acogedor para personas de todo el mundo. Cualquier residente local, o cualquier persona con pasaporte en mano pueden recibir una tarjeta de la biblioteca y utilizar la colección.

Being the National Library, the library is required to serve as a legal deposit for all the material published in Ireland. When I asked how these responsibilities worked in relation with the British Library’s duties as a national deposit for Ireland, I found out that Ireland has multiple legal deposits, several of them being college libraries. Since college libraries are not always open to the general public, the idea is that at least the copies held for deposit at the National Library will be available to everyone who wishes to use them.

Por ser la biblioteca nacional, la biblioteca funciona como depósito legal de todo el material publicado en Irlanda. The library is very popular during the summer months with American’s who come here to do genealogy work. For this type of research the library has holdings of parish records on microfilm with the original documents being held by individual parishes.

Para este tipo de investigación la biblioteca tiene una vasta colección de registros parroquiales en microfilm, y aunque los documentos originales están en las parroquias, parece que es fácil visitar los documentos originales.

As would be expected the library also has the world’s largest collection on Irish writers, including a huge collection on W.B Yeats. It turns out that over the last several decades, the Yeats family has been gradually donating most of their material to the library, who in turn allows the world to access it.

Como era de esperar la biblioteca también tiene la colección más grande del mundo de escritores irlandeses, incluyendo una enorme colección de W.B. Yeats. Technological development is ongoing in the Library. They do have an online catalog, but this only holds records for material acquired since1990. The library is currently working on various digitization projects, including the recent launch of a new online site holding 20,000 photographs from the National Photographic Archives. Currently, there is no wi-fi in the building.

La tecnología en la biblioteca esta en proceso de desarollo. Si tienen un catálogo en línea, pero este sólo tiene registros de material adquiridos después de 1990. Los registros de fechas previas están en un catálogo de fichas, o en grandes tomos. La biblioteca también tiene un pequeño catálogo de fichas separado para material bíblico, y otro para  mapas. Tampoco hay wi-fi en el edificio.

For some years now, the library has been working on organizing a number of exhibits and special events to attract visitors to the library. Every summer they organize something special on W.B. Yeats to coincide with it is an ongoing multi award winning exhibit in the library, paired with an online version of it, and a series of lunch time plays based on Yeats’ work. There is a second exhibit titled “Strangers to Citizens: The Irish in Europe”, about early migration to the UK, and continental Europe, much of it propelled by men’s desired to obtain a religious education. At other times of the year they organize lecture series, poetry readings, and other smaller exhibits.

Desde hace algunos años, la biblioteca ha estado organizando una serie de exposiciones y eventos especiales para atraer visitantes. Cada verano se organizan algo especial sobre W.B. Yeats. Este año es una exposición en la biblioteca, la cual ha ganado varios premios, junto con una versión en línea de la misma, y una serie teatral basadas en su obra, presentada la hora del almuerzo. Hay una segunda exposición titulada “Extraños a Ciudadanos: El irlandés en Europa”, sobre la primera migración hacia el Reino Unido,y  Europa continental, migración que en gran parte fue impulsada por hombres que deseaban obtener una educación religiosa. En otros momentos del año organizar series de conferencias, lecturas de poesía, y otras exposiciones más pequeñas.

The library is physically located on Kildare St. right between the National Museum, and the National Gallery, this last one holding a sizable collection of Jack Yeats‘ paintings. When I asked if the building had always been the National library, I found out that the library, along with the museum made up one family’s home!

La biblioteca se encuentra físicamente en Kildare St. entre el Museo Nacional, y la Galería Nacional, este último tiene una importante colección de pinturas de Jack Yeats. The library’s photograph archive it located in a different part of town, but I stopped by there as well, and got to see a great exhibit titled “If Ever you go to Dublin Town” which gathered black and white photography is Dublin in the 1950 and 1960.

La biblioteca incluye un archivo fotografico que se encuentra en una parte diferente de la ciudad, pero pase por allí, a ver una exposición titulada “Si alguna vez vas a la ciudad de Dublín“, que reune fotografía en blanco y negro en el Dublín de 1950, y 1960.

The central reading room is a treat in itself, with a beautiful vault ceiling, so if you’re in the area, stop by and take a look!

This afternoon I had an appointment for a tour of The British Library. The library itself is huge, taking up the better part of a city block, and having so much storage it has 5 underground levels full of books, plus additional storage at a remote location. Being the national library, it is in charge of keeping a copy of every single book published in the UK and Ireland; but by now this means more than 15 millions books, and counting.

But impressive numbers aside, the library also holds some very impressive items and special collections. As you walk into the building you can’t help but notice a glass column, full of books, reaching as far as the ceiling. This is known as the Kings Library; it’s the collection of King George III, and was donated to the nation by his son George IV back in 1823. The collection includes 65,000 volumes, 20,000 pamphlets, and over 400 manuscripts. And this is a working library, consulted daily by researches from around the world.

The library also includes The Sir John Ritblat Gallery: Treasures of the British Library; here you’ll find manuscripts for Alice in Wonderland, The Hours, compositions by the Beatles, Leonardo da Vinci’s notebook, illuminated manuscripts from India, Shakespeare’s first folio, Sultan Baybar’s Qu’ran, two Gutenberg Bibles, and in a small side room, the Magna Carta! (And by the way, you can actually page through many of these treasure through the library’s Virtual Books collection.)

The treasure room also holds the library’s holdings of the Codex Sinaiticus. This codex, written well over 1600 years ago contains the Christina bible in Greek, including the oldest complete copy of the New Testament. The codex has been divided into four pieces, with the British Library holding 694 pages of it, the Leipzig University Library holds 86 pages, the St. Catherine’s Monastery in Sinai holds 36 pages, and the National Library of Russia in St. Petersburg holds 8 pages.

The British Library acquired its portion of the codex when it purchased it from the book dealer Ernest Maggs on December 27, 1933, The codex has been on public display at the library every since. Currently there is a project to digitally reunite the full codex, and the British Library has another display in one of the main corridors explaining the project.

Yes, the British Library was quite impressive, the only thing I regret was not being able to see that gorgeous round reading room I’ve seen in so many pictures. That reading room is in the British Museum, former home to the British Library, until the mid 90s when the outgrew the space, and moved to their current location. And I did go to the British Museum to see the famous reading room, but unfortunately it is closed to the public until 2012.

I went back to the library on Sunday to see the Henry VIII exhibit which was also very good. I spent close to 3 hours looking at the collection, which included old portraits, letters, diaries, legal documents, books, and even a knight’s helmet. The exhibit documented Henry VIII entire life, from a childhood reared by women, to being crowned as a teenager, along with lots of primary documentation on his many marriages, and as well as his political legacy.

Suffice to say that I’ve never before seen people line up, waiting for a library to open its doors on a Sunday morning.

La biblioteca es enorme, cubriendo la mayor parte de una manzana, y tiene tanta capacidad de almacenamiento que tiene 5 niveles subterráneos llenos de libros, además de almacenamiento en una ubicación remota. Siendo la biblioteca nacional, esta encargada de mantener una copia de cada libro publicado en el Reino Unido e Irlanda; por ahora esto significa más de 15 millones de libros, y creciendo cada día.

Impresionante, pero dejando los números de lado, la biblioteca también tiene algunas piezas muy impresionante en sus colecciones especiales. Entrando al edificio no se puede evitar notar una columna de vidrio, que llega hasta el techo, llena de libros. Esta se la Biblioteca del Rey; es la colección del rey George III, y fue donada a la nación por su hijo George IV en 1823. La colección incluye 65.000 volúmenes, 20.000 folletos, y más de 400 manuscritos. Es una biblioteca de trabajo, consultada a diario por investigadores de todo el mundo.

La sala de lectura se encuentra en el Museo Británico, que fue el antiguo hogar de la Biblioteca Británica, hasta mediados de los años 90 cuando les quedo chico el espacio, y se trasladó a su ubicación actual. Fui hasta Museo Británico para ver la famosa sala de lectura, pero, desafortunadamente está cerrada al público hasta el 2012.

Volví a la biblioteca el domingo para ver la exposición de Henry VIII, también muy buena. Pasé cerca de 3 horas mirando la colección, que incluía retratos antiguos, cartas, diarios, documentos jurídicos, libros, e incluso un casco de caballero. La exposición documenta toda la vida, de Henry VIII, desde una infancia criados por mujeres, hasta ser coronado siendo todavía un adolescente, junto con un montón de documentación primaria en sus muchos matrimonios, así como su legado político.

Basta decir que nunca antes había visto a nadie haciendo fila, un domingo por la mañana, a la espera de que una biblioteca abra sus puertas.

This afternoon I was roaming the streets of London, with no particular destination in mind, when I ran into one of the sites on my “to see” list; Blackwell Books. I had heard about their “Print on Demand” project a couple months ago on an NPR story and I wanted to see it for myself.

The books store owns an Espresso Book Machine which can print, bind, and trim a book in minutes. Currently there are over 500,000 books loaded on to the machine, from which you can choose the one you’d like to buy. All you have to do is look through their catalog, make a selection, and while the machine is working its magic, you walk over to the register and pay your bill.

Blackwell is really advertising this new approach to book vending, arguing that the print on demand system is a greener options because it reduces transportation costs, and eliminates the pulping of millions of books that are printed every year, but which fail to sell.

Blackwell is also advertising their Espresso Machine as a way for new authors to get their work printed, and ready for sale. All an author needs to do is bring into the store a PDF file with 2 cm margins on a flash drive. Or they can email the store with the file.

Maybe this is the future of books… in any case it really is a cool machine!

En la tarde andaba caminando por las calles de Londres, sin ningún destino en mente, cuando me encontré con uno de los sitios en mi lista de sitios para ver, la tienda de libros Blackwell. Había oído hablar de su proyecto “Print on Demand” hace un par de meses en una historia NPR y quería verlo por mí misma.

La tienda de libros tiena una “Máquina Espresso” que puede imprimir, se pegar, y recortar un libro en cuestión de minutos. Actualmente hay más de 500.000 libros cargados en la máquina, desde donde se puede elegir el que quieras comprar. Todo lo que tienes que hacer es mirar a través de su catálogo, hacer una selección, y mientras la máquina está funcionando su magia, usted va al registro y pagar la factura.

Blackwell realmente le esta haciendo publicidad a este nuevo metodo de venta de libros, argumentando que la impresión por demanda es un sistema más ecológico, ya que reduce los costos de transporte, y elimina el desperdicio de millones de libro que se imprimen cada año, pero que no se vende.

Blackwell es también anuncia que su máquina espresso le sirve a nuevos autores para que publiquen su trabajo y lo tengan listo para la venta. Todos lo que un autor tiene que hacer es llegar con tienda con un archivo PDF con márgenes de 2 cm en un flash. O pueden contactar a la tienda por correo electrónico con el archivo.

Depronto este es sl futuro del libro… en todo caso es realmente un aparato increible.

This year’s SALALM conference was hosted by the Ibero-Amerikanische Institut (IAI), and I had the opportunity to take a tour of the library. The IAI hosts the largest collection on Latin America, Spain, Portugal, and the Caribbean in Europe. The library’s holdings cover material about belles-lettres, humanities, social sciences, economics, as well as legal material.

Este año, la conferencia de SALALM fue organizada por la Ibero-Amerikanische Institut (IAI), y tuve la oportunidad de hacer una visita a la biblioteca. El IAI alberga la colección más grande de América Latina, España, Portugal, el Caribe y en Europa. La biblioteca contiene de material sobre bellas letras, humanidades, ciencias sociales, la economía, así como de derecho.

As an interesting bit of information; the winners of the 2009 Dakar race were using information from maps at the IAI.

There is a great collection on Flickr of photographs from the battle at Normandie. The collection includes close to 3,000 images documenting the event; information and tags for this collection are all in French.

This was a project led by Conseil Régional de Basse-Normandie (Regional Council of Basse-Normandie) in 2004, for the D-Day 60th anniversary. The photo source for the project is the Archives Normandie 1939-1945. You can access the Flickr collection here.

As the name implies, Latinas in History is about Latinas around the world, and throughout the ages (although with heavy emphasis on the USA); both the stories of individual women, as well as the groups they form. The site offers a few essays with a general overview of Latinas in the USA, which helps contextualize the large collection of biographies to follow. They include world reknown Latinas, including the likes of Gloria Anzaldua, Vicky Carr, “Lolita” Lebron, Dolores Huerta, Carolina Herrera, and many, many others. Each entry contains a small summary of the woman’s life, or main acomplishment, as well as links to outside sources. These are also organized by topics, such as Labor activism, law, journalism, music and dance, etc.

The site also contains resources to teach about Latina Women in the USA, including lesson plans, mostly geared towards highschool and undergraduate students.

All in all, a very interesting site. Just be warned that music will automatically stream when you load the site.

Como el nombre implica, Latinas in History es un sitio web sobre mujeres Latinas alrededor del mundo y a lo largo de los años (pero con énfasis en los EEUU). El sitio contiene historias de mujeres individuales, así mismo como mujeres y los diversos grupos que forman. También encontrara varios ensayos ofreciendo una visión general de las mujeres Latinas en EEUU que le ayudaran a contextualizar la gran colección de biografías a seguir.
