The Stendhal University of Grenoble has joined forces with the city’s public library to create the digital collection Les Manuscrits de Stendhal. The site includes Stendhal‘s personal correspondence, as well as reflections on travels, literature and philosophy. And in case you are about to start looking for the manuscripts of  “The Red and the Black” and “The Charterhouse of Parma,” know that both were destroyed after publication, as was tradition back then. The website looks quite complete, and only functions in French.

I recently read an article in the Guardian where Google announced they plan to digitize 14,000 items from the National Museum of Iraq. Google explains that this project aims at introducing to the world many of the cultural artifact that shaped the beginning of civilization, many of which play a significant role in the three Abrahamic religions.

Given the tragic history of looting that the National Museum, National Library and many other cultural institutions in Iraq suffered after the USA invasion, Google’s desire to digitize these items may also serve as a way to preserve the the items left for generations to come. But it seems that they are not the first ones to have this idea.

The Baghdad Museum Project is a non-profit organization which is also working to preserve these treasures. Their approach is four-fold;

(1) establish a comprehensive online catalog of all cultural artifacts in the museum’s collection, (2) create a virtual Baghdad Museum that is accessible to the general public over the Internet, (3) build a 3D collaborative workspace within the virtual Baghdad Museum for design and fundraising purposes, and (4) establish a resource center within the virtual Baghdad Museum for community cultural development.

The Baghdad Museum Project already has a few items online that you can look through. They are also working towards the passing of legislation in the USA congress which can help the museum recover and can provide protection in the future. The name of the bill is The Iraq Cultural Heritage Protection Act, and is being sponsored by Phil English, and James A. Leach.

There is also a website for the Iraq Museum International, which looks like it’s part of The Baghdad Museum Project. This site offers more digital collections. There is also The Virtual Museum of Iraq, which offers a complete virtual tour, allowing you to click on many of the images to get a closer look and additional information. Yet another project is The Iraq Museum which works in English and Arabic, and offers digital images of some of the items in the museum.

And as I write this I’m starting to wonder if the leaders of these projects are in touch and collaborating.

Hace poco leí en un articulo del Guardian que Google ha anunciado su plan para digitalizar 14.000 artículos del Museo Nacional de Iraq. Google explica que este proyecto tiene por objeto introducir al mundo muchos de los artefactos culturales que dieron forma al comienzo de la civilización, muchos de los cuales desempeñan un papel significativo en las tres religiones abrahámicas.

Teniendo en cuenta la trágica historia de saqueo que el Museo Nacional, Biblioteca Nacional y muchas otras instituciones culturales de Iraq sufrieron después de la invasión de EE.UU., el deseo de Google de digitalizar estas piezas también puede servir como una forma de preservación para beneficio de futuras generaciones. Pero parece que no son los primeros en tener esta idea.

El Proyecto del Museo de Bagdad es una organización sin fines de lucro que trabaja también para preservar estos tesoros. Su enfoque tiene cuatro partes;

(1) establecer un amplio catálogo en línea de todos los artefactos culturales en la colección del museo, (2) crear un museo virtual de Bagdad de acceso público a través de Internet, (3) construir un espacio de trabajo colaborativo en 3D en el Museo Virtual de Bagdad para el diseño y la recaudación de fondos, y (4) establecer un centro de recursos en el Museo Virtual de Bagdad para el desarrollo cultural comunitario.

El Proyecto del Museo de Bagdad ya tiene algunos artículos en línea. This beautiful database set up by the Van Gogh Museum, gathers all of Vicent van Gogh’s letters, including facsimiles of the originals, transcriptions, translations, and the art work connected to each. The site allows you to browse by period, correspondent, and by place. You can also conduct basic and advance searches. The collection includes 902 letters, and 2,000 paintings (his own, and those of other artists) referenced in the letters. The site functions in English, French and Dutch.

The site will also give you some background information on van Gogh, his work, the time period, and the basics in his life. All this with the intention of drawing a more complex picture of the artist, something beyond the basic story that the man was plain old crazy.

Take a look, van Gogh was a fascinating man, and his letters reflect all his beauty.

Esta hermosas base de datos, creada por el Museo Van Gogh reúne todas las cartas de Vicent Van Gogh incluyendo las facsímiles de las cartas, sus transcripciones, traducciones, y la obra de arte conectado a cada una. El sitio le permite navegar por período, corresponsal, y por el lugar. También puede realizar búsquedas básicas y avanzadas. La colección incluye 902 cartas, y 2.000 pinturas (la suya, y las de otros artistas) a las que se hace referencia en las cartas. El sitio funciona en Inglés, francés y neerlandés.

The Red de Bibliotecas will provide you with all the information you may need about the network of libraries in the Medellín area. The main page regularly posts related stories, news updates, and other relevant items.

Along the left hand side you can find links that will give you a better idea of the services offered by this library network. Under “Bibliotecas” you’ll find basic contact information and location to the participating libraries. The link for “Bibliotecólogos” provides a space for library professionals to share resources, tips, and other relevant information. They also have a brand new blog that serves the same purpose of sharing resources. “Cinéfilos” gather information about movies being screed around the city, either at libraries or as part of film festivals. There are also links for cultural events, and multimedia projects. These multimedia projects are really good, and most tell stories about the region. “Pinacoteca” share art created by Colombian artists.

Alongside the top of the page you can find links to the region’s shared OPAC, their Virtual Library which offers access to online encyclopedias, journals, and links to many other digital initiatives around the country and throughout the Spanish speaking world. There is also a map which plots out the location of all these libraries, and provides you with contact information.

This is a very well planed and organized site. I encourage you to spend some time exploring it because chances are you’ll find something of interest.

La Red de Bibliotecas le proporcionará toda la información que necesite sobre la red de bibliotecas en el área de Medellín. La página principal le ofrece actualizaciones de noticias y otros temas pertinentes.

A lo largo del lado izquierdo se pueden encontrar enlaces que le darán una mejor idea de los servicios ofrecidos por esta red de bibliotecas. En “Bibliotecas” usted encontrará información básica de contacto y la ubicación de las bibliotecas participantes. El enlace para “Bibliotecólogos” proporciona un espacio para profesionales del campo para compartir recursos, consejos y otra información pertinente. También tienen un blog nuevo que tiene el mismo propósito de compartir recursos. “Cinéfilos” reunir información sobre presentaciones de películas en la ciudad, ya sea en bibliotecas o en el marco de algún festivales de cine. This afternoon I was roaming the streets of London, with no particular destination in mind, when I ran into one of the sites on my “to see” list; Blackwell Books. I had heard about their “Print on Demand” project a couple months ago on an NPR story and I wanted to see it for myself.

The books store owns an Espresso Book Machine which can print, bind, and trim a book in minutes. Currently there are over 500,000 books loaded on to the machine, from which you can choose the one you’d like to buy. All you have to do is look through their catalog, make a selection, and while the machine is working its magic, you walk over to the register and pay your bill.

Blackwell is really advertising this new approach to book vending, arguing that the print on demand system is a greener options because it reduces transportation costs, and eliminates the pulping of millions of books that are printed every year, but which fail to sell.

Blackwell is also advertising their Espresso Machine as a way for new authors to get their work printed, and ready for sale. All an author needs to do is bring into the store a PDF file with 2 cm margins on a flash drive. Or they can email the store with the file.

Maybe this is the future of books… in any case it really is a cool machine!

En la tarde andaba caminando por las calles de Londres, sin ningún destino en mente, cuando me encontré con uno de los sitios en mi lista de sitios para ver, la tienda de libros Blackwell. Había oído hablar de su proyecto “Print on Demand” hace un par de meses en una historia NPR y quería verlo por mí misma.

La tienda de libros tiena una “Máquina Espresso” que puede imprimir, se pegar, y recortar un libro en cuestión de minutos. Actualmente hay más de 500.000 libros cargados en la máquina, desde donde se puede elegir el que quieras comprar. Todo lo que tienes que hacer es mirar a través de su catálogo, hacer una selección, y mientras la máquina está funcionando su magia, usted va al registro y pagar la factura.

Blackwell realmente le esta haciendo publicidad a este nuevo metodo de venta de libros, argumentando que la impresión por demanda es un sistema más ecológico, ya que reduce los costos de transporte, y elimina el desperdicio de millones de libro que se imprimen cada año, pero que no se vende.

Blackwell es también anuncia que su máquina espresso le sirve a nuevos autores para que publiquen su trabajo y lo tengan listo para la venta. Todos lo que un autor tiene que hacer es llegar con tienda con un archivo PDF con márgenes de 2 cm en un flash. O pueden contactar a la tienda por correo electrónico con el archivo.

Depronto este es sl futuro del libro… en todo caso es realmente un aparato increible.

The Swedish Pirate Party captured a seat in the EU parliament today after running a campaign solely based on reforming copyright laws! The party believes that Europe no longer has a balance between respecting authorship and promoting cultural development.

Some of the party’s claims include claims that all non-commercial copyright and use should be completely free, and that file sharing and p2p networking should be encouraged rather than criminalized. They also want the “monopoly” for copyright holders to be limited to 5 years after publication, this would certainly be a drastic change to the almost century long copyrights that are currently in awarded in the USA. They also want DRM technologies banned. Their party platform extends into patents as well, charging that the patenting of pharmaceuticals contributed to preventable deaths around the Third World every year.

This is certainly a radical platform compared to the corporate world we live in, but as a librarian, I’d like to see more information being shared, so I’ve happy to see this new party’s win! I’ll be keeping an eye on their political activity from here on.

El Pirate Party (Partido Pirata) Sueco acaba de capturar un puesto en el parlamento Europeo, tras manejar una campaña basada exclusivamente en la reforma de las leyes del derecho de autor. El partido cree que Europa ya no tiene un balance entre el respeto del derecho del autor, y la promoción del desarrollo cultural.

El partido alega que todos los derechos de autor no-comercial, al igual que su uso deberían ser completamente gratuitos, y que se debería promover el uso de reds p2p, en vez de criminalizar estas prácticas. También quieren que el “monopolio” actual que ha creado las leyes de derecho del autor sean limitadas a 5 años después de su publicación. Esta ultima sí que sería un cambio drástico a las leyes actuales en los EEUU que guardan estos derechos casi un singlo. El grupo también quiere que sean prohibidas las tecnologías de DRM. Su plataforma política también se extiende a las patentes farmacéuticas, alegando que esta práctica contribuye a cantidades de muertes prevenibles cada año en el Tercer Mundo.

Ciertamente una plataforma política bastante radical a comparación con el clima de corporaciones en el que vivimos. Pero como bibliotecaria, quiero ver más información accesible a todos, así es que celebro este logro, y estaré pendiente a ver qué nuevos cambios nos trae este grupo.

Today the World Digital Library goes live! The project has been in the works for about 4 years now, and was initially conceived by James Billington of the USA Library of Congress (LOC), and developed by UNESCO and LOC. The site will function in seven languages and will showcase digital treasures from around the globe and throughout the ages. It is hoped that the site will help promote international understanding and expand non-English, non-Western content online.

¡Hoy la Biblioteca Digital Mundial se lanza en vivo! El proyecto ha estado en las planeación cerca de 4 años y fue inicialmente concebido por James Billington de la Biblioteca del Congreso de EE.UU. (LOC), y desarrollado por la UNESCO y la LOC. El sitio funcionará en siete idiomas y mostrará tesoros digitales de todo el mundo y a lo largo de los siglos. Se espera que el sitio ayudará a promover el entendimiento internacional y expandir el contenido de la web en idiomas diferentes al inglés, y de regiones no occidentales.

This really is a fascinating collection. You can search it by geographic region, time period, topic, holding institution, and type of item. While looking  you’ll find old photographs, curated videos, detailed explanations of the items, and links to share these treasures through some of the most commons web 2.0 venues, such as Facebook and Twitter.

Esta realmente es una colección fascinante. Se puede buscar por región geográfica, período de tiempo, tema, institución, y el tipo de elemento. I just read about a call for help to assist in the saving of hundreds of years worth of information on birds’ migrating patters. The North American Bird Phenology Program has 6 million note cards, dating back to the 1880s sitting in a Basement in Virginia, which they need help converting into digital files. There’s a call for volunteers to help transcribe this information, which they explain can help scientists trace bird patters, which in turn can help explore patters in climate change. Volunteers are asked to take a 15 minute online tutorial, and are then given access to hundreds of these cards to be manually transcribed into a database. Volunteers can work from the comfort of their home while helping preserve this information. If you wish to help, here’s the contact link.

Financial advice at the public library? Apparently so. As unstable and scary as the financial landscape appears these days all of us seem to be looking for advice where we can find it. Smart investing@your library® initiative, a partnership between FINRA (Financial Industry Regulatory Authority) Investor Education Foundation and ALA (American Library Association) has established a number of grants to help libraries establish programs that will help the community learn about the economy. And let’s be clear, the librarians establishing these programs are not going to tell you what stock to buy, but they will help you learn about the larger system at play, how to keep track of new developments, and other general trends.

FINRA believes public libraries are an obvious place for these programs because they can reach so many people in the community, and so far the programs are getting good reviews. Newton Public Library, in Newton, MA used their grant money to set up a retirement planning club for women, back in 2008. The group initially provided a space for women of all ages to get together and discuss the larger economic situation, talk about the options they had, and serve as a support group to each other. Over time, the group has continued to grow, now including a number of men as well.

Interestingly these grant were started over two years ago, appearing to have been ahead of the curve which brought us this crisis. During 2009 this partnership has invested $882,000 in grants which were be offered to 12 recipients, who in turn have established different programs, some geared towards women, immigrant families, youth, seniors, or low-income families;

Como lo inestable y aterrador del panorama financiero en estos días todos parecen estar buscando consejos donde quiera que los podemos encontrar.
